PlayStation Plus Update: NFL Blitz Joins the Plus Roster

Morgan Haro's Avatar + Posted by Morgan Haro on Oct 01, 2012 // Community Manager, PlayStation Digital Platforms

Last week you welcomed Starhawk’s single-player campaign into your gaming collection for free as a PlayStation Plus member. This week we continue to roll out even more content with NFL Blitz, coming free to Plus! Please note that Borderlands will be leaving Plus with this week’s PlayStation Store update, so make sure you grab it while you can.

Don’t have PlayStation Plus? Go to the PlayStation Store on your PS3 or click here to get access.

October 2nd PlayStation Plus Update

NFL Blitz — Free for PlayStation Plus Members
With football (of the American variety) in full effect, we and our pals at EA thought it right to help you gather some friends and play one of the best arcade sports titles in recent memory, all for free with your Plus membership. NFL Blitz features a combination of the arcade-style gameplay that made the original a hit and the deep, immersive game modes of today; recharged with an energetic, football gaming experience. Pick it up today, free with a Plus membership.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World — 80% discount for PlayStation Plus Members (Regular Price: $4.99, PS Plus Price: $1.00)
You’ll also see an amazing deal on SEGA’s classic Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Remastered for PSN, this is your chance to meet one of gaming’s original heroes, and get a great deal and a dose of nostalgia in the process. Journey to Miracle World in a search for your long lost brother Prince Egle, and get some Trophies while you’re at it. You can also challenge yourself with all new trial modes.
Spelunker HD — 50% discount (Regular Price: $9.99, PS Plus Price: $5.00) All DLC 50% Off (Regular Price: $1.99, PS Plus Price: $1.00)
Spelunker HD is no stranger to Plus members, as earlier last month we had a similar deal for the game. Fans (and to-be-fans) of the game will be excited to note that the new DLC releasing with the October 2nd Store Update (Area EX9 and Area EX10) will be joining the rest of the DLC with a 50% off discount — about $1 per Add-On. The game itself is going back on the 50% off deal as well, so get on it!

Lastly, I wanted to leave you guys with a Plus tip to help manage your benefits as a Plus member. If you’re low on HDD space but don’t want to miss out on any of the content in Plus, you can still click download, but then cancel the download. As long as you’re a Plus member you’ll be entitled to download it in the future, even if it’s not in Plus at that time.

That’s it for this week. Make sure you check out tomorrow’s PlayStation Store update post to see all the details for this week’s Plus update, and come back next week when we’ll have more great Plus news to share.

Also, we’d love to know your thoughts as to what you enjoyed most about Plus in the month of September. Feel free to explain your vote in the comments, or in the Plus section in the PlayStation Community forums.

What was the most important Plus content update to you in September?

Why aren’t we getting a free ps1 game each month anymore? I really liked that. Also, why no support for castlevania symphony of the night on the vita? That’s crazy to me you wouldn’t support one of the top 5 psx games of all time straight out of the bat.

I voted for Borderlands! I already own the game, but I hopeful that more games of that quality comes to PS +.

On another note, I don’t like the new format of giving bits of information each week instead of all at once. I know you probably don’t have much say in the matter. I enjoy how people get mad at you when you are just giving the info out. I could be wrong; Do you make all the decisions at PS?

A weak week for Plus imho. I say “week” because we can’t say month anymore ;)

Nonetheless, keep up the good work. It’ll take more than a couple of bad months (my opinion obviously) in one year to make me give up plus. Overall a fantastic value for a years worth of gaming.

Nice update. But it is nicer if we got something like free Resident Evil 4 HD or Resident Evil 5 considered Resident Evil 6 being released now; just like we got Borederlands for free when Borderlands 2 coming out :)

Hey Morgan! Thank you a lot for taking my opinion into account and telling which game will be out from the IGC, that will help a lot!

Please do more polls, they may be really important for you guys to have a glimpse of what we like or dislike.

Interested in NFL Blitz but Madden woulda been great. But the main reason in me posting a comment is I LOVE that you gave us a vote so we could provide you a quick, efficient way to give you feedback besides just combing through all our comments. Brilliant addition guys. I hope to see the votes far more often!

I love the variety that Playstation Plus provides. One week, I get Borderlands, a FPS/RPG hybrid; another week I get Double Dragon Neon, a remade, old-school beat-em-up; another week I get Starhawk, a third-person action shooter; then this week I get NFL Blitz, an arcade football classic (not to mention a very good game — 80 Metacritic score).

I understand why people complain — the games they’d like to see in the IGC don’t end up there (i.e., Red Dead, Dead Space 2, etc.). However, just because the games YOU want to be in the IGC don’t land there doesn’t mean that the PS+ updates are crappy. In fact, many of the games that have been placed in IGC are critically-acclaimed titles. There are very few, if any, “bad games” in the IGC. If you are a person that buys nearly every big titles like Borderlands, Infamous 2, and LBP2 when they are released, but are in PS Plus mostly for the IGC…what the heck are you doing?! Of course it’s not worth it for you…BECAUSE YOU BUY EVERYTHING THE DAY IT’S RELEASED! Heck, most of the people calling for Red Dead and Dead Space 2 probably have already played it and returned it to Gamestop (very few hardcore gamers have not played these highly-regarded titles).

214

+ GStylez1980 on October 1st, 2012 at 6:50 pm said:

For me, a person who does not frequent Gamestop every Tuesday to buy new releases, the IGC is extremely worthwhile, as it enables me to play games that I would’ve never dared try because I didn’t want to waste the money. Borderlands is a great example. Thanks to the IGC, I tried and loved that game, and will be buying BL2 soon.

In closing, I don’t expect the world for the $50 I pay to Sony for PS+ and the IGC. I just want diverse experiences…and for me, Sony delivers in spades. Keep up the good work, Morgan and Co!

A bit disappointed but this is the first time we see a sports game (since I’ve joined a year ago, PSOne games don’t count in my book), so I guess I really can’t complain.

Still, there’s this little hole in my chest that feels empty reading this update. I still like everything I am getting from PS+, and true to your reply Morgan, Sony has thus far kept all of their promises, and then some.

Still, there is this little hole in my chest that feels empty reading this update. There’s one thing you can do to fill that hole up and it doesn’t cost a lot. Wild A.R.M.S. please. You know I’ve been asking for that since forever!

PS: Uncle Morgan is very affectionate. I think it should stick.

Hey, what happened to free PSOne Classics being offered every month? Will there be no more free PSOne games, or does it just vary every month like any other kind of game? I’m not upset or anything, but I always like revisiting the classics. Especially if its something I haven’t already bought. XD

Personally I got ps+ for the IGC…

As I already said, I’m low on money this year, and my PS3 is new. ‘Cause of that I haven’t played many of the classic games that were and will be in the IGC.

I say for sure, the only dissapointment I had was with Sideway game… sorry if someone liked it, but… ~mehhh!

So there was a $20 bundle for borderlands + DLCs? Crazy!

I will be enjoying the games already on the IGC and GTA IV + Dragons Dogma for some while, so I dont care if it takes almost all my yearly subscription for PS+ to get better than it already is, and will for sure renew, if not for higher force.

Would love to play Dead Space, Red Dead Redemption, but, I dont care at all, as long as we’re getting something.

Thaaaaanks.

Blitz is a great choice. I’m not much of a football fan, but I’ve always liked Blitz. It’s just a lot of fun, and really easy to get into.

September was a pretty good month. I wasn’t interested at all in the second and third games for the month, but the Starhawk bonuses, especially the DLC, and the upgrade to 1GB were great.

Nothing I am too excited for. I’ll give Blitz a play though. I am pretty stoked that a sports game made it into the IGC. I don’t know how this genre has been absent for so long. Anyway, I already ran through Starhawk. That was a short, but very solid, campaign.

+ Beckanno on October 1st, 2012 at 9:32 pm said:

@215

Quite a few of the games released for the IGC are at least a year old, & most of which I personally did not buy day one. It only takes a few months for a game to decrease in value. ratchet warhammer & LBP2 are all $20 or under on amazon.

The IGC was announced in June when I was already subscribed for the long haul. What am I supposed to do? You cant get your money back for the subscription. What makes it even worse is that this change in program happened w/ no notification, Sony just assumed this is what we wanted whether we agreed to it or not. Everything after June has disappointed me & all I get is the fleeting hope that it will be getting better next month; I cant escape the feeling that the games I buy in the future will become a part of the IGC’s “rented” game program either.(Got screwed over w/ the ultimate editions they introduced a week before the IGC)

Its also disheartening to read Morgan agrees w/ your post because it confirms the suspicion that Sony values the people that might not buy from the store as often as opposed to those who do. I understand they have to bring in new people but a whole year is overkill. If I had the choice at the least… to agree to this new system I would just not have Plus.

227

+ Beckanno on October 1st, 2012 at 9:35 pm said:

Or if Plus was a one month event that would demand better games & Id be able to buy w/o worry. All I can do is hope for change or wait until the IGC ends.

Surprise another terrible month for PS+ subscribers. Borderlands is still the only quality game we’ve received since the IGC collection debuted, while EU PS+ has received Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Dead Space 2, and Deus Ex Human Revolution. Wow.

Why does Sony hate North America?

And to chime in for this push, I’ll definitely be putting NFL Blitz onto the living room PS3, see if I can get my dad into it (I know nearly zilch about sports), but Alex Kidd is going on mine (assuming my to-be- bro-in-law takes pity and doesn’t want to reclaim his TV). Spelunker, though, much as I’d like to, I’ll keep holding off.

And regarding Blitz itself, from that trailer, it makes me think it’s the NBA JAM of gridiron football. I might would give it a spin, myself, drawn in by the sillier aspects (beyond just men in tights and giant shoulders tossing a leather egg).

@199 Normalcy1 – *grumbletriplepostgrumble* I’m alright with week-by-week updates, since it keeps things fresh in my mind (especially Home’s updates, since content can be scattered about in there); just wish the regular Store updates would note the end dates for non-Plus sales (such as the FFXIII-2 DLC).

However, getting an end-of-the-month recap (as this post sort of did) can really help us take in just what all got pushed to us in that chunk of the calendar.

Too cheap to give us the FULL game of SH…we are supposed to be happy with half a game. A lot of people already have it so who cares? Especially # 51 he’s always whining about the old stuff EU gets. When I saw we were getting Borderlands for free I was stoked and immediately downloaded it. Shortly after starting it up I told my friend, who also is a PS+ member, to download it. I enjoyed it so immensely, not only did I buy a new copy of the GOTY Edition, but my friend and I also bought Borderlands 2 and the season passes.

This is the perfect example of why PlayStation Plus is such an amazing deal. Thank you!
