PlayStation Plus Update: King of Fighters XIII Free For Members

Once again, we’re here to brighten your Monday with the weekly update on incoming Plus content this week. So far in October, NFL Blitz joined the Instant Game Collection and Plus members received some discounts on Alex Kidd and Spelunker. This week, please join us in thanking our friends at Atlus for delivering the legendary King of Fighters XIII, free for Plus members! These updates will take effect with the October 9th (that’s tomorrow!) PlayStation Store update.

Don’t have PlayStation Plus? Go to the PlayStation Store on your PS3 or click here to get access.

October 9th PlayStation Plus Update

King of Fighters XIII

Free for PlayStation Plus Members
Select Add-Ons (An additional 30% off the PSN Sale Price)

King of Fighters XIII captured the attention of the fighting game community at this year’s amazingly salty EVO 2012 fighting game tournament. That said, we’re happy to get this deep fighter in to the hands of Plus members everywhere! With tons of play modes, a refined, faster paced engine, over 30 beautifully rendered and animated characters, all with great online play; this is one fighter you won’t want to miss. You’ll also find select Add-ons, including extra characters Mr. Karate, on sale for 30% off the PSN sale price, which is 50% off the regular store price. If you want to see how crazy the game can get, check out the final match in this year’s tournament. Epic stuff.

The Revenge of Shinobi

80% Discount for PlayStation Plus Members (Regular Price: $4.99, PS Plus Price: $1.00)

SEGA’s got more gaming to deliver this week with The Revenge of Shinobi available to Plus members for just $1. The Genesis original holds up with the gameplay and music you remember (as well as the crazy difficulty). With save anywhere capabilities, Trophy support, and graphical touch ups for an HD close-up, it’s an accessible classic that everyone should play.

Derrick the Deathfin (New PSN Release)

30% Discount (Regular Price: $7.99, PS Plus Price: $5.59)

You may have seen the PlayStation.Blog post revealing this PSN exclusive, and Plus members will be able to jump on a release week discount for this unique underwater papercraft action game (yes, that’s accurate). Packing an amazing artistic design, 32 handcrafted levels, and diverse gameplay, it’s a steal at just over $5.

Finally, we’ve got another poll for you. This time, we’re curious to know what you would be most interested to see in PS Plus on PS Vita. The service is scheduled to arrive this November, and we’ll have more concrete information as we lead up to launch. And remember, it’s all one Plus subscription whether you get Plus now, or later. Don’t forget to also rank this post in the upper right corner too; we use all that data.

[poll id=”22″]

That’s it for this week. Make sure you check out tomorrow’s PlayStation Store update post to see all the details for this week’s Plus update, and come back next week when we’ll have more great Plus news to share (including another free game for October 16th). See you in the comments, where I’m sure you’ll let us know what you think!

  • You’re so beautiful!

  • NICE PS+ update keep em coming

  • KofF XIII!! Not bad at all Morgan!! Keep it up!! Anything new on the ps1 and ps2 classic front?

  • Mexican PS+ Membership numbers just sky rocketed.

  • AWESOME….Just bought this yesterday too, =_= Hopefully sony does refunds….

  • What I’d like for PlayStation Plus, but really should be for everyone, is sign in invisible capability, categorized download history, optional alphabetical games list on the XMB, and some other very basic feature I can’t think of right now.

  • Regarding PS Vita and PS+, a major game or two would be nice. I’d prefer to see Vita only games seeing as how I paid $300 for this thing and barely use it. If I wanted a PSP, I’d have paid $130 for that. So yeah, how abotu some Gravity Rush or FIFA Soccer (12) next month?

  • Not bad, but not the best choice in my personal opinion ! Thanks anyway !

  • soo cool ty ps +

  • Derrick the Death Fin discount thats it for me

  • Great Plus update.

  • Nice to see the discount for Derrick the Deathfin as I was thinking about buying it anyway. This will probably put me over the edge.

I feel like we’ve had an abundance of fighters/brawlers lately on PS Plus, or maybe they just stand out to me because I’m not the biggest fan of them. I have a few suggestions/requests. I know I’m only one person but if it gets someone thinking then that’s cool:

    – Red Dead Redemption
    – Goldeneye 007: Reloaded
    – GTA IV
    – Catherine
    – BioShock 1/2

I’m assuming that some of the full retail titles will be disappearing from Plus soon so those are a few of the ones I’d definitely be interested in.

Thanks again for keeping Plus interesting!

  • Revenge of Shinobi is an instant pick up. Actually forgot it was on PSN or would have bought it sooner. Derrick the Deathfin is such a unique concept and at that price I’m itching to give it a try.

  • Pretty solid update! Though I’d like to see more discounts on games! I think that’s the best thing that PS+ offers! I’d love to see some discounts on MOF Frontline or COD classic which are still $15 each! or on Monkey Island Games! I’m Not complaining about free games though! Another resquest, PS2 was the home of several of the greatest RPGs ever! Please try to bring them back as classics!! They are too many to name here but most Atlus, Square-Enix, Triace and Level 5 games are real Classics!

    Keep up the good work!

  • only one game?

  • Another great fighting game added to the mix but still its ANOTHER fighting game. What about some more variety please. Its a great addition but for those that are not fighting fans this will be a let down after blitz.

Still loving the discounts for the PSN games and please stick to PS plus discounts for just the vita first. Then move onto the PSP AAA titles later.

  • Great.

  • I voted for “Discounts on PS Vita Content” because I like choosing what I want to buy. Enough said. My second choice is “Free Games playable only on PS Vita” because I bought a PS Vita to play PS Vita games! I am not interested in PSP games, Minis, PSone Classics, or PS Mobile games in PS+ for Vita. Just give me discounts on Vita content and secondary, free PS Vita only games! Cut out the “filler” like you did when re-launching PS+ on PS3 a few months ago! I came back to Plus when you cut the filler.

  • @ 4 Jon Mclane whats that supposed to mean?

  • Derrick the Death Fin looks awesome!

  • Hi Morgan
Do you know why is One Piece Pirate Warriors absent from the mexican store? Will it ever appear on there?
    Thanks for reading

  • Great Update!!!

  • I wish we could have gotten retro city rampage on here now that would have been really cool!!

  • I voted for “Free Games compatible with both PS Vita and PSP (20%, 63 Votes)”, because lets be honest… Vitas library isn’t very good at this point. You’ll be limiting yourself to games you’ve already played and beaten or crappy games you wouldn’t of wanted to play in the first place with this option. But with any game on PSP, it opens up the doors for far many more options and better games.

  • I believe it’s still too early for people to be wanting retail VIta games for free (as shown in the poll). Personally throw me some free psp/ps1 games and I’ll be happy. Once again discounts on vita content would be my second choice if I had one.

  • I just found out I have pityriasis rosea, but knowing I’ll be getting King Of Fighters for free made it all better! :) I’m also really excited for Plus updates on Vita. My Vita needs more love and DJ Max isn’t coming to my door for quite a bit.

P.S. No, I’m not lying and it’s not lethal, just obnoxious.

  • I’d definitely want to see some full games for PS Plus on the Vita as well as discounts on Vita content…I don’t want old PSP games on my shiny new handheld, personally.

I’d love to see some of these:

    – wipEout 2048
    – New Little King’s Story (sorry, but $40 is too expensive for a digital only game)
    – Metal Gear HD (one or both would be sweet)

Whatever you guys end up doing, please consider not putting in games like Tales from Space, Stardust, and Escape Plan that are selling very well on their own into the program. Many Vita owners have taken advantage of titles like that as we’ve seen in the monthly sales recaps here on the blog so hopefully we get free games that are quality but might not have sold particularly well!

  • Though I’m not a huge sports game fan or fighting game fan I appreciate the last two updates for trying to appeal to a wider variety or users. I’ll get both Blitz and KoF to have some fun multi-player when friends are over.

If you can get a decent RPG into the Instant Game Collection, that would make me very happy.

  • Personally I’m not really interested in this game but I might as well check it out.

Anyway, this is more like it. Keep ’em coming!

  • Never played KOF series, not my preferred game type but when I do play them, I pretty much stick to tekken and soul caliber and VF. I appreciate the diversity, getting a fighter, personally would have preferred a different genre, but I’m sure there are plenty of thumbs up for this game by many. Looking forward to see what else we get this year.

  • Wait… according to last week’s PS store update, 2 games are leaving the IGC this week, and tomorrow only one is being added. What gives?!?

I hope that RE 5 Gold is added this month, it would really help Capcom promote RE6…

  • Let the PSP die already! The Vita needs your FULL attention right now. Why even include that PSP option?!

    • Because there are a ton of great PSP games that maybe folks didn’t play, but if they could get them as part of PS Plus on PS Vita, their gaming horizons might expand? I think it’s a fine, sensible option =)

  • Great! Thank you!

  • I just picked up a new superslim to replace my launch system. I bought a 1 terrabyte drive with it for all the PS Plus stuff. Keep up the good work!

  • @34

In japan PSP is still huge. Though Japan we are not who’s going to buy Vita games if in 3 months they become free on IGC? Hardware sales might go up (possibly) but software sales would die dragging the Vita with it.

  • KOF13 = Awesomeness!!! Now if only they’d improve the netcode a little more.

  • I for one would LOVE to receive some PSP games for my Vita as well, as long as they’re top quality.

But the focus should be on Vita games, of course.

  • @34

If Sony abandoned the PSP now, it would be a major gamble that could end up losing them lots of money if Vita doesn’t turn out well. PSP still outsells both Vita and PS3 on a weekly basis in Japan, and has 3 times as many games coming out the rest of the year in Japan as the Vita. They need to keep on supporting it since its what one of their most important markets want.

  • Some of the older PSP RPGs would be great as well, there’s tons of great RPGs on PSP.

  • I have been loving my PS+, and I will be renewing when my subscription ends, but I have been hoping for better games than what’s been available as of late. I like Blitz, and King of Fighters is all right, but I was really hoping that Resident Evil 5 could be there, as well as Bulletstorm (I know EU got both of these this month, so a US release shouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility, right?). I would also have loved a Joe Danger discount, but it looks like I’ll be waiting until it’s on sale or something until I pick it up.

  • It’s nice to finally get a game I don’t already have but it does suck that I don’t care for fighting games. I’ll at least try it out.

  • Oh come on, people would rather want psp games than discounted Vita games? You guys need to think ahead, they’re going to stop making psp games sooner or later.

    • To be clear, it’s not a one or the other thing. Discounts will be there throughout, it’s just a question of what’s most important to you.

  • @ 16 @ 32 IT’S ONE GAME PEER WEEK !! PAY ATTENTION !!! REAAAAAAAAD!!

  • Nice to see King of Fighters, that’s one fighting series I’ve never played. Looks like that’ll change. :)

As for the poll, Vita only games, by far. Thankfully most others seem to agree. I’ve owned a PSP since 2005 and own most of the content I’d want for it already (barring a few Atlus games), I want Vita specific content. Unless we’re going to see some of those PSP games be Gungnir, Disgaea 2, or Growlanser (which I doubt as they’re far too niche), I want Vita only games.

  • @44

It’s more referring to psp/ps1 classic both of which are (or soon will be) playable on both psp and vita.

  • nice ive been wanting to get back into the KOF games. ever since last years EVO tournament. i also like the polls u guys are doing now..hopefully u could do a poll for games we want on PS+ for free (both PS3 and PS life)

  • Great update for Plus!

As for the Vita, I wouldn’t mind if we got earlier titles for its Instant Collection, like Ninja Gaiden, Gravity Rush, or Mortal Kombat. What I didn’t like was that apparently we are either getting discounts or an Instant Collection, is that what’s happening? Is it even going to an “Instant Collection”, as mentioned in the past, or is it just going to be a single game?

Come on… we ALL want more info about Plus on the Vita!!! It’s less than 3 weeks to November, spill the beans already! :D

  • I chose “Free Games playable only on PS Vita”, but I’d like to add the caveat that they should be GOOD games. Sony shouldn’t be offering up Little Deviants for free and then calling it a day. Let’s see some titles like Rayman Origins for free.

If Sony isn’t ready to do that yet, then they should make some PSP collections free, like Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, or God of War.
