Final Fantasy XIV on PS3Final Fantasy XIV on PS3

The loyal PlayStation.Blog readers amongst you might have noticed that we’ve been unusually quiet in recent times, but no longer, today we come bearing gifts! For all our RPG-loving fans, we’re excited to bring you the world’s first screenshots of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on PS3 (Chocobos included)!

In our first PlayStation 3 reveal, we wanted to give you a guided tour around the game’s interface and menus. With a wealth of different options and commands at your fingertips at any time, it was important for us to create an elegant UI that is easy to read and navigate. Taking inspiration from previous games, the look and feel of the new Final Fantasy will be instantly familiar to long-time fans of the series.

The accompanying screenshots show an action bar with 16 total slots; of which, the left eight can be accessed by pressing the L2 button, and the right eight with the R2. The corresponding eight slots are mapped to the controller’s directional pad, along with the Circle, x, Triangle, and Square buttons. Players can set up to eight action bars, and cycle through them by pressing both the L2 and R2 buttons.

In Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, we’ve put an emphasis on customisation. Knowing that everyone has their own personal tastes, not to mention the need to have a load-out that compliments the character and role you’re playing in-game, all of the UI elements that you see in the screenshots can be enabled, disabled, and repositioned to suit your preferences. Menus are also simple to navigate, with the command you’re looking for only a few button presses away.

The UI, like the rest of the game, is built to offer the high-quality experience that you would expect from its PC counterpart. With Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn supporting cross-platform play, it was important that the features and gameplay align across both platforms. The graphical quality is no exception to this, and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn takes full advantage of PlayStation 3’s resources to bring you the amazing visuals you’ve come to expect from Final Fantasy.

  • Final Fantasy is a done franchise. Time to reboot it. FFIX remake please.

    Yes guys, FFIX >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>FFVII

  • 1) Nobody cares about XIV

    2) “Lightning Saga Rehash” sucks balls

    3) There is only one FF game PS3 owners want to play and that is FF Verses XIII

    4) Screw you

    • 1) …I do. In all seriousness we have a really great active XI and XIV community. We’ve worked hard to rebuild it with the community’s feedback in mind and we’re really excited to show it to the world.

      2) Sorry you feel that way. I’m only talking about XIV today but you can be sure we’ll be revealing more about Lightning Returns in the future.

      3) No news on it yet but it’s still in development. I’ll be back on the blog as soon as we have anything to reveal

      4) :(

  • If this game was free-to-play then I’d probably be interested but then again, I don’t know why FF14 have to be an MMO. It should have been another installment, another story. Final Fantasy Versus XIII is where it’s at.

  • With the servers coming down next month in preparation for the 2.0 update, i am really torn if I want to continue playing on the PC or move to the PS3. PC version currently has 30 slots for abilities, as well as 100 slots for macros… things the PS3 version will never have. But, sitting on my couch to play on the big screen is equally tempting….

    • A tough choice but we really want to level the playing field when it comes to the experience you have between the platforms.

  • Wow, the negativity.

While I too am looking forward to Versus XIII, credit where it’s due: FF XIV: A Realm Reborn looks good and I’m sure quite a few people are waiting on this MMO to hit the PS3.

Glad that the development is making progress and I’m looking forward to seeing that gameplay soon! Keep it up!

    • Thanks G-Force08! We know that people are eager for more news on Versus (and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to come back to the blog to deliver it). In the meantime we have also been spending a lot of time building XIV:ARR and we’re sure that you’re going to love it when you get your hands on it.

  • cant wait FFXI had an epic story (well epic storIES).. especially CoP and was the main reason I stuck around 8 years… I hope FFXIV can pull that off too. I couldnt care less about the other stuff

  • I have waited for this version. I’m glad it was delayed because, this game has one shot to win me over. Let’s do it.

  • Really looking forward to this!! Any beta info to share or an estimate on when it will start?

  • I really want to try this out. I was suckered into buying Final Fantasy XIII and was given a voucher code for something Final Fantasy XIV related. I want to redeem that code already!

  • Great news for people that have been waiting for this. Not really my cup of tea anymore but might give it a shot. Having said that I do have to bring up. Would it really have killed it to include the PC UI and a option for keyboard and mouse on the PS3. I have to commend titles like Counter Strike and Dust514 for including the option, and this option should be on all PS3 titles that would benefit.

    Cheers.

  • Damn its cold in here

  • Wow, that looks impressive. I played XIV for a year on and off after launch but stopped when my twins were born. Now that they’re older I’m really looking forward to getting back into Eorzea on the PS3. So a few questions:

    1) Will we have the option on PS3 to use the mouse and keyboard?

    2) If we have existing FFXIV characters can we use the same account that we used previously on PC?

    3) Will there be a beta? If so, when, and can I have access? ;)

    4) Is there a rough idea how much HDD space the game will take up? FFXIV on PC was about 18GB if I remember correctly, but much has changed since then.

    5) Are there any plans for a Vita style app to track your character and auctions? If not, there should be!

Thanks, I’m really looking forward to hearing more!

  • Sweeet!!! Cant wait for this as i played FFxi and loved it!!!! any word if you can use keyboard and mouse?and BETA?!!!!!

  • Really needs to be free

  • When in 2013?

  • “Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s development is well underway (currently entering an alpha test phase) and the PS3 version is still on track for simultaneous release with its PC counterpart in 2013”
Wasn’t this suppose to be release next year?

Don’t see this game doing well with the PS3 base subscription model…..go back to playing Guild Wars

  • Man I can’t wait for this thing to release. PS3 version while at home and laptop on the go, lol. HURRY UP AND GET THE BETA OUT!

    @#2
    1. I care about FFXIV
    2. What?
    3. Wrong, I wanna play both.
    4. Not sure who you talking to/about since your little rant is missing some important info, but I’ll go ahead and say same to you buddy.

So what I’m trying to say Chumps is stop putting words in to other PS3 gamers mouths and don’t pass your opinions off as facts everyone agrees with. Because I don’t.

  • This had better be Free to play similiar to DC Universe, because i can’t imagine you guys expecting us to pay full price for the disk then pay a subscription on top of that. Considering how terribly received the PC version of FF14 was.

Though to be honest, i’m really sick of Square making real numbered FF games (11 and 14) online only. It messes up my need to try all of the numbered main line FF games, because i have little interest in the online versions (unless they are free).

Calling them Final Fantasy Online 1 and 2 would have made more since, but i guess you guys didn’t have enough confidence in the games selling without numbering them. :(

  • And why in the world is the localization editor of the mediocre Record of Agarest War series giving us the info on this game?

  • @12 There will be a PS3 beta, starting in a few months. You can use your account from the PC version, though obviously you will probably have to buy the PS3 version first. Squeenix is save character data on November 10th to import into the new version. So you have until then if you want to play some more until then. I really need to finish off my black mage and botanist before then….

  • These aren’t the real screens to FF 14. This is just what the government WANTS you to think are screens to the game! The game will never come out! FF 14 and Verses 13 are lies!! Don’t trust the government!!!

  • Next year? I’m beginning to see a trend here. But I’d rather see it come out working and have to wait.
I’ve lost interest in this game a long time ago. Hope you can do something to revive it, or otherwise there’s no way I’m paying a subscription fee.
Go free to play like DC Universe.

And since everyone else is doing it:
Where’s the news on Versus? Or Type 0?!!

  • @19 (myself) looks like he changed the info to something that makes more sense.

  • @18: They done tons of updates to the game since ot launched. The PS3 version only benefits from the PC versions flop launch.

  • To reiterate what everyone is saying.

1)WHERE THE HELL IS VERSUS XIII
2)XIV will only matter if its F2P with Microtransactions that r’nt pay to win
3)So hows that nonexistent FFX HD coming along?

I do not know if u can tell SQUARE, but the world kinda hates ur internal studios right now. Time to do something about it.

  • WOW………I completely forgot about this game, to me the FF Series is dead I rater play a TALES MMO from Namco than play this crap!

  • Looks great! I’ve been waiting for this! Can’t wait to play it! :D

  • @makoSOLDER

Well said. Versus 13 and ffx HD are the only 2 things everyone really cares about. I don’t think a time machine would even get us to play either of them.

I got a feeling they could be keeping those games until near the end of the ps3 to show everyone what the ps3 can really do. Maybe it could buy a few more years onto the ps3 so there would be no need for the next gen just yet. Surely with versus on ps3 around that time, it could still surely kick next gen xbox ass

  • I look forward to seeing this drop on my PS3, this is my kinda experience…free to play? Monthly fee? Sorry if i missed it I was blinded by my rage for the haters:D

@ 1&2 If this dont look good for you maybe its time you “reboot” your game selection process…-_-

I dont understand why ANYONE personally thinks THEY can say what the path of this series should be…its up to the creators…im pretty sure all you picky nay sayers need to get over that feeling and move on. Preferably to another series at that…

Im am personally jsut so sick of people venting hatred on FF because it dosnt fit their personal preferance like glove. I think the problem might be that they are too dumb to realize maybe they just dont like FF anymore…because dispite what it WAS or what it is supposed to be, it IS what it IS.

    Its as simple as that.

    (Blahhh, end anti hate rant)

  • I really have high hope for this yeah final fantasy has gone to pieces since the end of FFX but there are still things that I liked about the newer ones and this looks way better then what we got along time ago.

  • I will so that I am excited about FF Lightning Returns but I want it out AFTER Versus XIII not before. Also forgot to mention. Where is Type-0? I thought it was being localized. For PSP or Vita? Or is one of those SQUARE announcements that mean nothing like FFX HD?

  • I would also like to say…I too would love some type of Vita App that would tie into the game, i like apps that tie into games :D

  • Ben, how about brining some of those iOS (Chaos Rings 1/2/ Omega) , Vita (Lord of A) or PSP (FF Type-0) games stateside.

Honestly you’ll have better success with this market than $30 games on Apples platform. And you don’t have to compete with $0.99 games and a casual gamer’s palette.

  • @1
You can’t reboot a franchise that doesn’t have a history to reboot. Every FF is a self contained title, every game is a reboot. There for I reject your sentiment and your preposition.

    @2
I can agree on one account, I really want FFversusXIII. FFXIII has been a waste of time since they started working on sequels. As much as I liked FFXIII-2, the ending left a sour taste in my mouth and then bringing back Lightning (and possibly snow from what I hear) was a horrible idea. The entire case of FFXIII was just unlikable to one degree or another. Lightning being a top offender in the group. Blows my mind that they would bring her back for one more game, this maybe the first one I skip. However FF14 is another story unto itself, Square is genuinely trying to make it work and I’m curious to see how they went about fixing it.

  • So… does it have HD Towns?

  • Quick question….is their a membership fee you have to pay every month?…

  • @36 of course… this isnt one of those crap MMOs that let you play for free but you get bored within 2 months because you’re stuck doing the same 3 things everyday (dc universe online) or you can play for free but the item mall has much better stuff so the people who are willing to pay money FAR outclass the people who play free… you get what you pay for and in this case you get PLENTY.. I would know.. I played FFXI for 8 years.. DC universe only held my attention for 2 months.. the fact that a game could keep you interested for 1 year let alone 8 shows it must give you PLENTY to do

  • Played the PC Beta then the real game at launch (so basically an extended Beta).

Had great visuals, good potential and I enjoyed the combat.

As long as they haven’t changed combat/swap weapons to change jobs/all that fun, kept the graphics and improved the other areas it could be really good.

Plus a PS3 MMO is nice to have as an option.

  • @37 Square Enix has enough money that they could give us a high quality Free to play game if they really wnated to. But they are pretty greedy, considering the overpriced games they port to ios, so i expect them to charge a subscription plus make us pay just to download or buy the disk for the initial game.

  • Looks awesome..! I’ve been waiting forever for this game to come to PS3!

I bought XIII day one and entered the code for the FFXIV PS3 beta on the SE website.

Unfortunately, I do not use/remember that email accounts address or password… (it has been a few years).

Will PS+ get early access to the ARR beta? Or access at all?

I need to get in this beta!

    • Speak to the Square Enix Customer Support and they might be able to help you recover your account details.

We’re not talking about BETA plans in depth right now but you can expect to hear more about it in the near future.

  • I’ve played FFXI for years and I am still playing it…

I also played DCUO for a short time, and i can tell you right now FTP is not the way to go.

There’s a vast difference in quality between a FTP and PTP MMO.

Even 10 year old PTP FFXI destroys DCUO.

You get what you pay for.

  • Versus XIII or get out. I’m not even gonna show any sympathy for Square Enix at this point of the generation because they’re making games that people don’t want and not making the games that people DO want.

And we’re all waiting for Cloud Strife to be in the roster of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

  • Not to insult anyones opinion. But No ff14 will not be free to play. And no as a business model it don;t suck. FF11 still retains a healthy sub base and still charges. ($13 a mnth for a character) and honestly do your homework on the difference between free to play and pay to play. Free to play pretty much is ur can play it “free” BUT if u want to “win” u need to pay money, and you end up actually paying MORE per mouth. the sub fees for ffxiv are “entry- 12.99 for 8 characters 1 per server. and full- 14.99 you get up to 40 characters 8 per server.” with free to play like DCUO people are known to pay upward of $50+ per month. (ps dcuo isn;t the best example of an mmo it actually is a poor mmo) I played several pay to play mmo. and free to play mmo. And most of the time with f2p u pay more money due to they nickle and dime everything. I go on playstation home and my friends pay a good $60+ a mnth if not a week on their avatar.

one f2p game i played “Mabinogi” i payed $60 for 2 mnths just on BASIC mmo stuff.

  • and please if you guys are not interested in ffxiv… don;t bother reading the artical if you just gonna comment on ff vs 13. which btw you guys may not like cuz it will be more kindom hearts then classic FF. (and i’m far from a final fantasy fan i just enjoy their mmo)

  • Many many many people (including me) NEED news on final fantasy versus xiii. But seeing no-one can tell us anything about it, it would be nice to at least know if it is still a ps3 exclusive?

  • Wow, still looks even impressive on the PS3 that is 6 years old! :D

I hope to be part of the beta on PS3. :)

  • Played this game on and off since alpha testing on PC. Its much improved over its pc release. for those asking it will have a monthly charge of around $13 unless you are a previous player aka “legacy” …and that is $10 ( if i remember right)

My question is …will the PS3 beta code i received about 3 years ago with FF XIII be valid still. Or will i be able to test on PS3 because i played on PC for over a year?

Also will i have to pay full retail for this game as i have it on PC too?

  • I love how the haters keep saying “No one cares about this” and yet theres alot of posts from people who clearly do still care about it… please don’t lump us in with you haters…

  • Cross-platform play? Can’t wait for the PC vs Console rage sessions that are sure to come…

“YOU CAN’T JOIN OUR GUILD BECAUSE YOU PLAY ON A CONSOLE, NOOB!”

-sincerely, every prick that plays on PC

tell me I’m wrong, if you can………

    • I think playing any online game is about choosing good people to play with. A good guild won’t hold having a different platform against you, especially the experience is very similar.

Best advice we can give (and this goes for any online/multiplayer game) is to play with friends or join the community websites. It’s easy to find likeminded gamers to play with on the official forums.
