PS3 Action RPG Of Orcs and Men Hits PSN Tuesday

Hi PlayStation players, this is Sylvain from Cyanide. I’m here to give you an introduction to the world of Greenskins and humans.

Of Orcs and Men is an action RPG, taking place in a dark and mature universe where Greenskins (orcs and goblins) have finally been defeated after a long war against the human kingdom. The emperor has decided that, in order to prevent any further war against the Greenskins, it’s best to just commit full-on genocide — unfortunately for you, you’ll be controlling an orc and a goblin.

As the game starts, Arkail (the massive orc) and Styx (the stealthy goblin) are among the last of their race still alive. They are sent on a suicide mission – to reach the land of the humans and assassinate the Emperor, thus stopping the massacre and enslavement of greenskins.

Originally, while playing with the prototype, we enjoyed controlling Styx and Arkail individually, but even more, we liked the combinations they could have. We kept improving features to make them as unique as possible, but we also worked on tandem attacks for use in combat (like throwing the goblin with the orc, boosting one another up, etc.).

We also improved the role playing aspect of the game by giving each of them different abilities, characteristics and inventory. This one came rather easily, as we can’t imagine Arkail wearing Styx armor… unless you want him wearing very tight armor.

A funny note about this game – as we finished the prototype and began pre-production, lots of publishers told us that our game would never perform because players only wanted to play the good guys. “No one will want to be an orc or a goblin!” they said, and of course, we knew things were not black and white in this game.

We spent lots of time creating a mature universe, rethinking standards of the fantasy genre. Even very early on, we strongly believed this game had potential, and that players wanted something a bit more original than playing yet another human paladin, in shiny armor, killing stupid goblins, while saving swords and looting the princess (or is it the other way around?). Now when I see the feedback we’ve gotten for Of Orcs and Men around the world, I’m glad we listened to our gut and made this game for you, the players.

Well, I hope you’ll have as much fun with the game as we did while developing it. You’ll be able to download the game straight to your PS3 when PSN updates on Tuesday. Oh and one last thing, good luck with the Trophies… some of our internal testers are still having a hard time beating the extreme difficulty!

  • The cries for multiplayer are pretty pathetic btw. Not every single game of every single genre needs it. It’s gotten so bad this last decade with this nonsense and most of the time developers force it in so y’all will shut up about it. Pretty soon even TV Dinners will have to come with multiple forks for that multiplayer madness.

  • No Demo, $40 for a digital only game, easy pass for me but to those asking for some gameplay here ya go

  • This is an RPG like Skyrim… it doesn’t need multiplayer, better yet it wouldn’t make sense.

The trailer seemed to have short bits of in game material, also tge cutscenes are all in game/engine as well. I will probably buy this, peeked my interest a long while back when it was on this blog.

  • not every game needs to find its way onto the Vita. lets just get that straight.

  • I want to play it!

  • I wouldn’t mind this game being the free Plus game for this week. God Knows it’ll be better than anything Sony America chooses for us.

  • When is this going to hit the European segment? There have been news about it, but it is still not downloadable from PSN. Some sites have already suggested that it should already be available.

  • Oh never mind. Too tiresome to find a reliable source of information. I just ordered the green f***er. I will be notified by a local shopkeeper when they dispatch the shipment and then fetch it from a nearby post office, unless it finds its way directly to me that is.

Not sure about which way this concludes, but anyway I just had to buy the game because of the videos around Youtube. The game interests me in many ways, but the last push to buy the game came from Youtube. The playstyles (…tactics?) of those few people (love you anyway) who are seen to play the game are so… unique. These videos ignited a furious tickling near-masochismic agony one video after another. Every single time they just rush in and wonder why they die so many times in one single video. Great videos though, don’t get me wrong here. Without the actual game, videos make great entertainment. They just missed the tactics so I got tired and thought “I will definitely correct this no matter what”. Seems that one player got pulled some sort of tactics to go with however.

  • Good way to make people buy games is to buy a game, record a gameplay video and upload it to Youtube. Either way it works. Whenever you play a game, it does entertain spectators in a way or another and that sells. Whenever you play a game without any ideas how to act in certain situations and just go with the flow, people like me go thru such emotions that almost makes us learn each phrase and each line in that game, each character names, each tactic possible, everything! …and we also buy the game to show how to play the game for real. Damn it is hard to be a sanguine-melancholic. xD LOL

  • Wow I feel so betrayed, the rep said Of Orcs and Men would be $40 but it is $50!!

  • Can’t believe you guys are charging $50 for this without a demo or actual gameplay footage. I hope the game flops just to show you the idiocy of your marketing.

  • I have to say a number of people on here are silly. I believe the reason that it is a PSN release is because it originally only was released in Europe and this was a way for a full title to be released digitally. I can understand somewhat about the lack of a demo but there are a lot of RPGs that do not have demos. There are screenshots in the preview and if any of you would be a bit more ambitious you could find videos of actual gameplay from the developers there plus from others.

That said I personally enjoy the battle system which is a bit like the first Dragon Age where you quickly pause action and select your moves. It is much better looking and has a better combat system than Game of Thrones. It could have probably have been made to support co op but really part of the strategy is switching between Orc and Goblin on the fly to queue up commands.

It definitely is a full game with stat building, inventory, etc. I am glad I picked it up and hope this will benefit some of you.

  • Oh also it may seem pretty tough on normal at first but make sure that in tougher battles that you lead off with assassinating as many enemies as you can before moving in to full battle and also be sure to look for items. For example, after your 3rd or 4th battle there is a glowing bag on a cart with Gauntlets I think.

  • This title surprised me when I learned there wouldn’t be a retail version of it. It looks like there should be. I’m a little disappointed to say the least.
