PS3 System Software Update (v4.30)

Next Tuesday, October 23rd, we will be releasing a new system software update for PlayStation 3 (version 4.30). With this update we have made several changes to how Trophies are displayed on your PlayStation 3. The Trophy Collection will now reside under PlayStation Network on the XMB. Trophies that you have earned playing PlayStation Vita games are now displayed on your PlayStation 3. You will also be able to see your Trophy level and progress towards the next level while viewing your trophy collection.

PS Vita Trophies on PS3

By the beginning of November 2012, we will retire the services available through the Life with PlayStation application. In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update. This includes the conclusion of our participation with Stanford University’s Folding@home, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.

We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding@home project to date, and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University’s Alzheimer ’s disease research. Considering the contribution PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University.
Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University, had this to say about your contributions:

“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”

Please note, the games shown in the picture above are examples, and do not represent existing PS3 or PS Vita games.

  • WE CAN SEE OUR VITA TROPHIES!!!!! Thank you so much. I hope in a future update we will be able to see friends playing Vita games through the PS3.

  • Vita trophies!!!!! Mine will show finally!!!

  • I approve !

  • Sad to see folding go. Hope that it has really helped in the research that it was a part of.

Glad to see that Vita trophies will be viewable on the PS3. Finally! : D

  • Please tell me you guys fixed the bug that prevented the system from auto-shutting down in the XMB when I have my auto-shutdown option enabled.

  • This was my only complaint with the Vita, and I am so happy. Thank you so much for your hard work, I am thoroughly excited.

  • Wow wasn’t expecting this, great job! But what we really want updated on PS3’s XMB more than anything is the ability to view PSVita user’s online. Thanks again!

  • I’m definitely in the minority here, but I’m sad to see Life w/ PlayStation go.

  • lol @ all the fake game names.

    also… awww… not Folding@Home… :(

  • Oh nice, Vita trophies on m… What what what!? “Travel the Solar System”?! Did you just leak something?! :D

Also, any chance this firmware update also allows us to arrange games by title? (sorry had to ask)

  • Is there anyway you can reconsider about Life with Playstation? I really love that, and I don’t see any point in taking it away :/

It’s always just been one of those features that is nice to have…

  • I use Folding@Home whenever I am away and want my PS3 ready for remote play. It’s a great standby app.

  • I’m still waiting for the update that will allow us to download in background while watching DVD’s/Blu-Rays.

Good update for PS Vita users I guess. But I’m sad to see Life with Playstation go.

  • Question!
I happen to notice a PSVita and PS3 marking under some of these games. So will games like Sound Shapes be categorized under one category although they have 2 separate lists or is this an indication of games like Sly Cooper Thieves in Time that only have one shared trophy set?

  • Since your improving things that have to do with trophies, could your also include 0% trophy deleting in 4.31 maybe?

  • Could you, not could your. Sorry about that.

  • Agreed with 15.. there are games where I have 0% or 1% trophies I have no intention of going back to finish those.

  • Love that Vita trophies will be visible but why must we loose Life w/ PlayStation? I love the music in it and made me feel pretty good that i could even in a small way help research treatments for diseases casued by protein misfolds. I used to get alot of interesting world news from it as well. I even got 2 of my friends into it. It will be sorely missed.

  • For a second I thought we were going to be able to delete trophy lists of those games we have never ever earned a single trophy in. Thanks!

  • Just wondering if you might be able to provide some insight into why Life with Playstation is being retired? I use this all the time and will really miss having it available.

  • I agree with 15, it would be awesome if we could delete games with 0% from our trophy list.

  • finally. Who even used that crappy Life with Playstation thing anyway?
Can’t wait for the software update for the trophy improvements though. Its a shame the store redesign is delayed.

  • Question… what the hell is “Travel the Solar System”??

  • Can your tech team please make the notification pop up more visually appealing, smaller, and an option to move it somewhere else? Its a huge block that always covers up the HUD in games at the worst times. Its been 6 years and its still a large gray random post it.

  • Whoops didn’t read the thing about that program helping raise funds for Alzheimer’s disease research. i don’t recall seeing anything about that last time i used that program.
Well you should continue supporting them but put the it to a better program than what life with playstation was.

  • I remember when Folding@Home first came out I left my PS3 running it all the time whenever I was away or wasn’t using the Internet. Then my original Phat PS3 got YLOD eventually and I never used it again lol.

  • I know, dear Eric Lempel, that you are not the one who decides what goes into each firmware update. However, in case there is anybody out there who reads this stuff who has any connection to those people, let me say two quick things:

1: In the history of owing a PS3, never once have we had the ability to sort games by Title when they’re in Folders. Folders can be sorted by a number of options that people use far less than sorting by Title, so, really, can we PLEASE have this?

2: Ever since that Firmware update that broke the old way that games were copies from a PS3 to a PSP, we’ve now had to keep all of our installer bubbles if we ever want to install the PSP/PS1/Minis game to a PSP. And, of course, those installer bubbles cannot be organized into folders. For those of us who own PSPs, who use our PS3 as our PSP-game-wrangler, and who have more than, say, three games total, this is absolute torture. Please give us the option to sort those installation files.

  • Will my September preorder of Need For Speed count toward my October $100 purchases.

  • pretty nice update

  • Probably won’t get an answer to this, as I never do, but I gotta ask anyway:

What are the chances of getting the ability to delete 0% games from out trophy list? There are some games I played that I never earned a trophy in, but the game is stuck on my list.
The “other console” let you delete games with 0% from cluttering the games list, and I would love to have that feature on the PS3 trophy list. Any chance?

  • Happy I contributed my tiny grain of sand for the Folding@home project :)

  • Now give us an option to remove games with trophies at 0% from our tophy list and ill be a very happy man :)

  • I glad they are remove life with playstation app. But what about the news and see what time it is on the other side? Will that stay and the Folding@home can freaking leave. I never used it since i was on pdc.com and got banned on it. Now the ps vita AWESOME. I just bought one a few days ago i have gotten the blod twice. So keep up the good work Kevin Butler and your HDMI controls

  • Ttavel the Solar System, eh? Sounds enticing!

  • Who was the genius who thought it made sense to move trophies from the game section to the PSN section?

    Seriously, get a clue.

  • So if anyone got a vita plz add me so i can try the party app. :-) :-) :-) :-)

  • Finally! i’ve been waiting for the update to see my trophies!!! we’ll be able to see the Vita trophies when we check out Profile too right? Also as someone else mentioned, it would be pretty fantastic if we could see when the Vita players are Online/what they are playing from the PS3. Thanks :D

  • Actually, looks like it’s a placeholder that’s been around a few years:

    http://www.ps3trophies.co.uk/threads/4189-Travel-the-Solar-System

  • I have a question since you guys are fixing things, since I had my day one PS3 I have noticed that the message icon on the top right corner never worked not one time in all these years, why haven’t you guys ever fix that? I would like to see a sort by format & title feature so I can finally sort out all my games correctly, on the vita now, can we have background downloading & bring back the t.v. screen opition to browse the vita instead of using the vita screen? Sometimes tranferring things to the vita takes long and having to sit up in front of my bravia instead of being able to lay in bed with my playstation 3 joystick controlling the tranfers is getting very annoying now.

  • This is exactly what I was waiting for this is amazing
One small step for PlayStation one huge step for PlayStation fans :-)

  • I agree with 15,17, 21 please i really dont feel like looking at those games i played before, i just want them GONE!!!!!!

  • Add me to the list of people that are disappointed that Folding @ Home is going away. I always have it turned on when I am not using my PS3. The only times I ever turn off my PS3 is when it gets really really hot in my house and I fear for my PS3, or I take it with me on vacation. Please reconsider getting rid of the Folding @ Home app. I really liked being part of the Folding @ Home collective and I would really hate to see it go. :(

  • Vita trophies! Finally!

  • @13, I dont know about you but, I can set my download game to background download/ Load up Netflix or watch BluRays, and during the movie, I see the Finished Downloading pop=up in the right hand corner of my screen.

  • @42, you can also run it on your PC.

  • I don’t understand the removal of Life with Playstation. It was nice to mess around with once in a while.

  • I loved the idea of Folding@Home, even though it was the reason my first PS3 died. Not due to the program itself, but due to me leaving my first PS3 on 24 hours a day for over a year and a half. If I wasn’t gaming, I was folding. Though I always wished Sony took the technical aspect of how Folding@Home worked, and allowed PS3 users to put their PS3’s number crunching prowess to work for SETI@Home. SETI@Home is literally like 40 years behind in analysing data they’ve collected. PS3’s could REALLY help with that workload. Oh, well.

  • Thank you for moving [Trophy Collection] from game section it got in the way while using in-game XMB trying to quit a game and being right next to the [Quit Game] and [PlayStation Store]

Would be nice to see less none used things while using in-game XMB to avoid less clutter like [PlayStation Store] in [Game], [Video] section while using In-game XMB along with all the none accessible things in [Settings] section there’s latterly only 3 things you can accessing the XMB while on the [Settings] section of the XMB menu which are the following: [Game Settings], [Accessory Settings], [Network Settings]

To be honest there’s only a few reasons why I use the In-Game XMB which are to see who’s Online in [Friends], check my [Inbox] for [Received] and [Sent] messages to [Reply to Messages], and a [Create Message] or join a [Game Invite], [Quite Game], [Controller Settings], [Turn Off Controller], [Turn Off System] or view upcoming trophies under [Trophy Collection]

Hope anyone reading find this useful.
