New Features Invade Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable on PS Vita

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable for PS Vita

The Earth Defense Force is back, and I’m here to tell you what to expect when it lands on PS Vita this winter! Earth Defense Force 2017 (“EDF3” in Japan) launched in 2007 as a third-person shooter developed by Sandlot and published by D3Publisher.

In Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable for PS Vita, the core of the game (the 3D arcade action and the system features) remain the same as in EDF2017, but by adding many additional features the game feels completely transformed and remastered. These additions include an online co-op mode, new missions, enemies and weapons, and a new playable character in Pale Wing.

The story is set in the year 2017. The Ravagers — a vile alien race — are coming to Earth, and they have one thing on their minds: the complete destruction of mankind! In Earth Defense Force 2017, you are Earth’s last line of defense. You’ll be dropped into the shoes of a member of the Earth Defense Force. Your mission: stop the Ravagers from conquering Earth.

With the added online play, you can now play a co-op game with up to four players on your PS Vita, without giving up three quarters of your screen. New tactics and strategy are required when playing with friends, bringing a whole new experience to EDF2017 that I think players will love.

Every player can select their weapons, so the key to effective teamwork is to take advantage of each soldier’s attributes. There are also many new weapons that specialize in cooperative gameplay, including tools that assist and revive your fallen allies. You can chat with your friends in multiplayer, so it’s key to keep in contact and make a tactical battle plan. There is also a PvP multiplayer mode where you track your opponent on radar, then make the most of your weapons to go for the win.

You can also unlock Pale Wing, the flying female playable character, after certain conditions are met. Pale Wing did not exist in the world of EDF2017, but she came flying from EDF2 into EDF3 Portable to help the troops out against the new threat. This character requires you to play the game differently, with her flying ability and new gear, so be prepared! Pale Wing has her own set of gear, such as the rapier and laser rifle, adding even more variation to the game’s 150+ weapons. You can even have all four players play as Pale Wing in multiplayer to create a complete Pale Wing Unit.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable is packed with new features. I think fans will be most excited about being able to play online with their friends, as EDF has always been a game that players have enjoyed sharing with others. For those new to the EDF world, welcome! I think you will find an over-the-top action arcade experience that will keep you coming back to your PS Vita for more. We look forward to sharing more of the game with you in the future, as we prepare for a PS Vita-exclusive winter launch. Let us know if you’ve played EDF, and which new features you’re most looking forward to!

  • I have never played an EDF game before. But this does look worth picking up.

  • So, the original VA work from 2017 USA will be in, eh? Are the actors returning to record any new material, for referring to Palewing, rather than Storm 1?

Love the 360 release of this game, was a reason for buying the system. Will love to get to play it, with all these enhancements, on Vita! Thanks for bringing it to the US in a timely manner, too!

Thanks for bringing the series outside of Asia, onto Vita :)

  • Dear D3,

The only way that you will get me to buy another product of yours after the mishandling of WKC 2 and its DLC would possibly be to bring over some of those Tales Vita games that your parent company (Namco B.) are holding onto for dear life for no apparent reason other than to deprive themselves of sales.

If Japanese publishers actually catered certain, DESIRABLE products to their fan-bases, they would have the success of XSEED, Atlus and NISA only larger, on account of the strength of these IPs. But instead we get Earth Defence Force and a bunch of other “B” list crap that won’t sell and that the dolts in the Japanese offices will use to justify their “North Americans don’t buy Japanese games” shtick.

They don’t buy “crappy” games. That’s the distinction that needs to be made.

  • amazing!!!!!

this will satisfy us until Earth Defense Force 4!!!

by the way Miki Takahashi, can we get Onechanbara Kagura for PS3!!!!

i have been dying to play that game!!

at least take it into consideration :)

  • Will it just be Trooper and Pale Wing or will there being any returning classes from Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon.

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring the original PS2/Xbox 360 version of EDF to PS3, I’m BEGGING you! The latest version, EDF 2017 is complete and utter **** compared to the original. Seriously, how could you dumb down and ruin such an epic game? I’m serious when I say the PS2 version was graphically better and more fun in terms of gameplay compared to the PS3 version, does that not sound alarm bells to you? EDF was one of the best games of last gen but 2017 is actually one of the worst this gen, it’s the COMPLETE opposite!

Seriously, this is an insult, bring back the original, I don’t care if it’s a complete port, it doesn’t need a “2017” sequel because it’s already so damn good as it is. Just port the original and I’ll still pay double instead of this piece of..

  • Don’t expect those classes to return. IA is a completly different game, developed by foreign devs.

This game here is already out in JP, and just has the main class (Storm 1) and Flight here (Palewing). So no armor explosions and energy shields! (Zera gunpods still remain, though)

  • You do not know how (bleeping) happy it makes me to see this releases in NA! I have been a HUGE fan of EDF since the original! My most anticipated Vita game and one of my most anticipated overall! Cannot Wait!

  • Now this looks like something that is worth checking out, even though this is a port. Ps Vita owners want that third party support that’s killing the Ps Vita. The system won’t be able to compete with the 3DS if this keeps up.

  • I think some people are confused. This is not the latest version that was released on PS3 last year, that was Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. The is the version that was released exclusively on the 360 back in 2007, but it has been updated for online play and now includes Pale Wing with other new features. Honestly, (and I think most EDF fans will agree) 2017 is much better than Insect Armageddon.

  • How much this gonna cost..i hope about $20.

  • Insta-buy!!! I just saw what the game looks like… My type of game!!! Please market this, I can see this selling.

  • To illustrate my previous point, please watch as Persona 4: Golden and to a lesser extent Ragnarok Odyssey, obliterate this and any other game you publish in quality, user satisfaction and sales.

Strong IPs + quality = success.

Stop sloughing off Sally Anne ports and your Namco overlords wouldn’t find NA so inhospitable.

  • hoping this will be a freebie for next month :D might still get it if its not that much

  • how do u make the vita street fighter cross tekken unlock the 12 people for the ps3 version?

  • Will this be getting a UK release? If it is it will be a definite day 1 purchase, EDF 2017 is/was such a fantastic game.

  • To any member of the blog team here at playstation, i would like to know why my avatar is not showing when i leave a message here on playstation blog site? If someone can please let me know asap on how to resolve this it be great,i already spoke to someone at the playstation customer support and they said to leave a message here and a moderator would get in contact with me,so thanks and looking forward to you reply.

  • I am not happy that you have damaged Level-5. Some people refuse to support them because you failed to support WKC2. Never get anywhere any Level-5 games again if you won’t support them.

Anyhoo, I may get this. We shall see.

  • As long as it’s Co-op, shooting tons of aliens with heavy weapons, I’m IN! Seen EDF around for quite sometime but never get the chance to play it. Think I’m loving Vita more and more XD

    • There is definitely co-op and versus mode and TONS of aliens and insects with over 150 weapons at your disposal. Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable will be an AWESOME experience for your PlayStation Vita!

  • Nice. I was just wondering today if this game would come here and then I see this. That’s great. I need this kind of fun.

  • So I’m looking around and there’s no one here to take my money. That’s strange. Waiting then?

Also is that this holiday season winter?

  • Man, the Vita games are starting to be layed on thick for the holiday season. First it’s no games and now it’s too many for my wallet to handle. That said, I’m still totally snatching this one up this winter. Love EDF!

  • Can you please be gental with the trophies. EDF 2 is just so much work for me and my friend and we are still working on it. Please make the trophies basicly the same as the achivments from the first game. Also will be getting this.

  • I can’t wait to get this! Please D3 bring God Eater 2 over too please!

  • Go to Google

Search: Let’s get Patapon 3 psvita- compatible

    Click on the second result

    Sign the petition

    Thank you

  • Will you ever see the girl’s face?

  • @ Miki Takahashi – can you please assist me with my question on #67 please. or any moderator reading this.

  • why is my avatar not showing up???

  • This is a place for comments about EDF, not ridiculously off topic questions about profile pics not showing up, nor whining abour WKC. On that note, EDF looks like a perfect fit fo the Vita and i cant wait to play this game! i hope it does extremely well in sales for that matter, because we need more awesome titles like this.

  • Don’t let the screenshots and the console versions fool you! I played the japanese version of this game, and it was a mess!

It plays NOTHING like the console versions NOTHING. The graphics are down right budget graphics and the insect animation is robotic and just awkward. Not only that but after you kill the insect their bodies stick around and you have the fun of using your gun as a leaf blower!

STAY AWAY, THERE A PLENTY OF BETTER GAMES COMING OUT FOR THE VITA, SAVE YOUR 40$!

I guarantee you 3/10-5/10s for this game when it comes out!

ONCE AGAIN don’t let screenshots and the fact that the console version fool you! This has budget written all over it!

  • Without a doubt in my mind, I will be getting this. The only downside is I won’t have anyone to play co-op with :C Wish I could read Japanese or else I would import more of my games and just connect with them. I want somehow for the Vita to be pushed further. America, I am disgusted. Rednecks and politicians…

  • if they fix all the things wrong with the last title
i won’t be buying this travesty of a game

  • Yes!!!!! exactly what the Vita needs. Looks amazing

  • Sounds great. Something for my Christmas lists!

  • @ MoshuaDeath

Awesome comment on America… completely pointless and has nothing to do with post. Also America is one of the best off Continent. You wish you had what we do, don’t be jealous:)

DON’T BUY THIS GAME! It’s NOTHING LIKE THE CONSOLE VERSIONS! NOTHING!

  • Re: 60, are you sure this is the Xbox 360 version? If so, this game will be MUCH, much better than Insect Armageddon! now tell me it’s coming to PS3 because I’m not buying a Vita, ever.

  • @ supvic (#86)

Yes I am positive this is the same game that was released on 360, it’s just been updated to include Pale Wing and online play for the Vita. Trust me, I know EDF (and all Sandlot games), I’ve been a huge fan of this studio since Robot Alchemic Drive on PS2 over 10 years ago. Miki Takahashi has already confirmed it is the same game if you read some of the replies. Insect Armageddon was made by a different studio, which is why it wasn’t nearly as good as the other EDF games from the past. It looks like D3 learned their lesson, as this game and the next one (Earth Defense Forces 4) are being developed by Sandlot again.

You won’t be able to play this game without a Vita, but EDF 4 was shown off at Tokyo Game Show a few months back. It will be on PS3. Now we just have to wait to see if D3 will release it outside of Japan. I suggest you look up some Youtube videos on it, just search for this: 地球防衛軍4

  • @80

Welcome to the world of EDF. It has always been a low budget franchise with B-movie dialogue and cheesy scenarios reminiscent of the monster movies from the 50s and 60s. It sounds like you have only played Insect Armageddon, which was very different from the previous games. The “low-budget” feel is precisely why this franchise has a cult following. It is not trying to compete with the big AAA franchises (and in my opinion, that’s a good thing). Some of us don’t care about realistic animations and flashy graphics all the time. EDF caters to a niche crowd of the gaming market. I admit, it’s not for everyone, but if you only care about animations and graphics, then you should stick to mainstream games. EDF sacrifices the “realistic and serious” trends the industry seems to be so in love with these days for good old fashioned, arcade-like gameplay that many other developers have forgot about this generation.

  • @ 88

It’s forgotten for a reason. Yes I’ve played EDF Armageddon, and that is exactly what I’m comparing it too. So we have to pay 40$ for a full retail but budget game? That doesn’t seem fair, the asking price should be 20$ or 30$ then.

Anyways I haven’t played any of the previous games but at least in comparison to EDF Armageddon, this was a total waste of money and I sold it on kijiji the very next day.

  • First off… This is with out a doubt one of my favorite games of all time. Loved it on 360, can’t wait for the Vita version. I’m just wondering… Winter is a big window. Are we looking before 2013 winter or after?
    Thanks!

  • Oh what a joyous day! I can not wait for this to come out! EDF! EDF! EDF!

PS. Please bring over EDF4 as well kthx :)

  • @89

Forgotten for a reason? I can respect that you didn’t like the game, but your opinion doesn’t reflect everyone. It sounds like the game just wasn’t for you. EDF has never been a mainstream franchise, so it wasn’t “forgotten for a reason” as you put it. Again, it’s not for everyone, but that doesn’t make it a bad game. If I went around telling everyone not to buy a game I didn’t particularly like, I would be telling them not to buy games like Uncharted or Call of Duty. Just because those aren’t my types of games doesn’t make them bad games.

  • @92

If we start dissecting everything like that, then no game should ever be reviewed.

Also I love arcade shooters, been playing them since genesis and on my fav console of all time Sega Dreamcast. Virtual on, Zone of the enders, slave zero I played them all including countless arcade shooters, and your right, at least for me I was completely disappointed since I was spoiled with EDF: Armageddon which i literally put in 100+ hours into it.

It’s too bad their not bringing that one over.

  • @93

Well, we’ll just have to agree to disagree on EDF. Still though, I wouldn’t go around telling people not to buy a game just because you didn’t like it yourself. Just like I wouldn’t go on a blog post about Uncharted and tell people not to buy it because I thought it was boring. A lot of people on here played 2017 and loved it. From what I’ve seen on various message boards, 2017 is usually favored over Insect Armageddon.

Anyway, I’ll end the discussion here and just tell you that you that outside of EDF, you have great taste in games :) The Dreamcast is probably my favorite console of all time. I really miss SEGA consoles. Part of the reason I love EDF so much is because it reminds me of the classic arcade games similar to many of the games SEGA used to make (even though EDF isn’t developed or published by them).

  • I’ve NEVER heard of this game! But this game seems cool!

  • @94

That’s exactly why I loved Armageddon, it had such tight and responsive feel mixed with random and weird stuff.

I guess going from this one to that one is definitely a change, it prob made it worse that I went into the game thinking it was more like Armageddon.

Yes I miss the Dreamcast and sega console as well, I actually have 12 Dreamcasts (10 of which I bought whole sale for 20$ because the owner thought they were broken, although 3 were) and bought a Vga adapter and a monitor just for my dreamcast gaming:)

I also have a Dreamcast Emulator so I can play in on the go on my laptop lol I”m fully set!

This is why I was super excited to get Sonic adventure 2 and NIghts on psn, it completed my collection. All I need now is Shenmue 1, 2, virtual on and Sonic Shuffle and I’ll be happy.

Now that I’m reading those games it seem like a a lot, but apparently shenmue 1 and 2 are around the corner :P

  • re: 87, YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just youtubed what you told me and I JIZZED MY PANTS! finally! I’ve been waiting since the PS2 days (5+ years) for a real EDF sequel (never had a 360) so thanks for pointing that out for me. I can be patient now that I know a true sequel with the same engine by Sandlot is being developed.

I also LOVED Robot Alchemic Drive, good to see I’m not the only one. I’m absolutely BEGGING for a sequel of that on PS3, it was such an epic game and there’s nothing that comes anywhere NEAR it today, it’s completely unique.

Re: 96. EDF Armageddon was absolute **** so if you enjoyed that POS because it was on a new engine, you’ll go insane when you play the next EDF sequel.

  • @97

I guess I’ll be avoiding the new one then thank you:).

Also EDF: Armageddon took ppl by surprise and it was actually widely accepted! But like xKOROSHIYAx said, to each his own.

I was a little insensitive to speak out so offensively because I too am completely down when I see a cult classic and following of my own being rejected:).

    Float your boats!

  • Now owning little big planet, after owning this too my vita will be forever complete. Two of my favorite games anywhere, looking beautiful. That’s why I love the vita. :)

  • I’m looking forward to it, looks awesome!
