Kat and Emmett In PS All-Stars Details (And New Level Revealed)

It’s been a couple of weeks since Seth let the Kat (and the Emmett!) out of the bag, so I thought I’d stop in and give you guys some insight into the philosophy behind putting these two great characters into PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The team and I attended an event at the Santa Monica Studios last night where we gave media attendees the first hands-on look at our new DLC, including the unveil of a brand new level, so I wanted to give you all a sneak peek at some of their moves and show off our newest level, Fearless! It’s all exciting stuff that I’m eager to tell you all about, so let’s get started.

PlayStation All-Stars: Gravity DashPlayStation All-Stars: Gravity Attraction

Gravity Rush landed on PlayStation Vita earlier this year, introducing us to Kat. Her tremendous gravity powers, combined with a really charming personality made her an instant fan favorite, and thus an obvious candidate for PlayStation All-Stars. When looking at Kat’s play style in Gravity Rush two things immediately stood out to us: her reliance on aerial mobility and her arsenal of powerful kick-based attacks. We felt it was important to use these two elements as the cornerstone of Kat’s play style, and as such, her move set in PlayStation All-Stars makes liberal use of both.

For example, Kat doesn’t have a double jump! Instead, she relies on her Gravity Dash, an eight-direction mini-flight mode to move through the air. This cancellable move affords Kat an unprecedented degree of air mobility and attack potential.

PlayStation All-Stars: Kat Level 1

Another example sees Kat using her powers of gravity manipulation directly against her rivals. Kat creates gravity wells, which draw in nearby players via her Gravity Attraction attack. Kat’s playstyle is such that she’s most effective when close to her opponents, and while her air mobility and varying kicks allow her to get in close pretty well, Gravity Attraction lets her pull her opponents directly to her. Success with Kat will require players to use all of Kat’s abilities in harmony, and Gravity Attraction plays a key role in accomplishing that.

I also want to give you guys a look at one of Kat’s Supers. Kat’s Level 1 Super, Gravity Squeeze, is based on her finishing attack so often used to dispatch the bosses in Gravity Rush. Kat leaps at her foe, stealing a giant orb of energy. As she destroys the orb, her victim explodes. If anyone is caught within the resulting blast of energy, they explode too! This is a very powerful Super, but one that will require Kat players to be clever in order to score maximum points.

This year also saw the release of Starhawk, a game set in the wild galactic frontier where the quest for Rift Energy comes with a terrible human cost. Starhawk’s main protagonist, Emmett Graves, is a man all too familiar with that cost, his body forever transformed by exposure to the toxic Rift Energy. Emmett makes wide use of varying weapons based on advanced technology, most notably through Starhawk’s Build & Battle system. It’s this particular mechanic that made Emmett such a compelling character to the PlayStation All-Stars Team.

PlayStation All-Stars: Shotgun Mine

The first of Emmett’s two most important Build & Battle moves is his Aerial M.A.W Rocket Launcher and Tetranite Grenade Bunker move. This allows Emmett to call down a bunker that when used, completely changes his weapon loadout. The Rocket Launcher gives Emmett access to a long range, powerful, aimable projectile. The grenade launcher provides an equally devastating attack, both in terms of AP generation and versatility, and is used primarily to stop the advancement of opponents in front of Emmett. Both weapons are somewhat slow moving, but more than make up for it in terms of sheer firepower.

The second, but equally important Build & Battle move that I want to tell you about is the Union Shotgun and R-Secs Proximity Mine Bunker move. Like the previous Build & Battle move, a separate bunker is brought in from low orbit, this time with ample shotgun and mine ammunition. Choosing this loadout supplies Emmett with devastatingly quick-hitting, short-range firepower via the shotgun as well as excellent space control through persistent mines. Neither weapon offers the range of the rocket launcher or grenade, so good Emmett players will need to be able to master alternating between both loadouts depending on the situation.

PlayStation All-Stars: Rocket GrenadePlayStation All-Stars: Hawk

What better piece of anti-personnel weaponry is there in the Starhawk universe than the amazingly versatile Hawk? As the ultimate Level 3 Super, Emmett takes control of a Hawk in mech configuration, and is able to chase down his opponents with terrifying machine gun fire and tricky floating mines. And when all else fails, Emmett can transform the Hawk into flight mode and rain down a final hail of bullets that’s tough to survive. It’s an impressive Super, befitting of a universe filled with amazing technology.

Before I go, I want to give you all a look at what we have planned for our newest level, which during development has earned the codename Fearless. Fearless is a mash-up level that sees the fantasy world of Heavenly Sword meet the futuristic race tracks of Wipeout. In the short time we’ve been working on it, Fearless has become one of the team’s favorite levels, and we think you’ll see why.

PlayStation All-Stars: Fearless Top

The action in Fearless starts out atop a high column supported by gigantic ropes, creating a scene pulled straight from the world of Heavenly Sword. Our players will battle it out on this high column under the watchful eye of the forces of Bohan. It’s a medium-sized space, free of any platforms, and offers some of the most uninterrupted calm you can find in PlayStation All-Stars.

PlayStation All-Stars: Fearless Bottom

In the distance though, the hum of anti-gravity racing can be heard, and over the course of the match, a familiar floating race materializes. Soon, the battle is interrupted as stray fire from the famous racing ships of Wipeout hits the fighting column, and our fighters come crashing down into a new, more vertical part of the level, the race track cutting straight through the fight space! Any fighter unlucky enough to get knocked into the track or in the way of one of these terrific ships will pay the cost – literally – by receiving a hefty AP penalty. Knowing how to best leverage your character’s moves while avoiding the dangers of the race track are key tools to mastering your fear, and mastering Fearless.

We’ve still got a long way to go to complete Kat, Emmett, and our new level Fearless, but I hope you enjoyed this early look into where things are going. We think these new characters and level fit well into the gameplay already established in PlayStation All-Stars, while at the same time expanding the notions of what’s possible within our fight system. We can’t wait for you guys to get your hands on this stuff early next year, but there’s still quite a bit of work left to do before we can call anything finished. With that said, I’ll get back to work.

  • This is excellent news, I can’t wait to get my hands on it!! :D
Any chance of Ellen from Folklore? Her move-set potential is huge! Or at least a stage – that game had some really awesome environments. Keep up the good work guys :)

  • Everyone who is still on the fence of purchasing PSASBR should ignore all of the critics and purchase it not only for future DLC, but for its deep and simple combat system, Its many satisfying unlockables, the near perfect online system, satisfying and hilarious rival cutscenes, flawless balancing of the current 20 characters, and, most importantly, for all of the great folks over at SuperBot Entertainment!

  • Man this is good news i can’t wait i actually enjoy this game mostly on my vita but i also have a couple of questions i hope you guys will answer.

    1) i read that there will be a patch soon (which is good news it needs it…mostly for the online character problem…) but from what i read only sackboy will receive a debuff… so in the first patch only sack boy?

    2) i pre-ordered the game and got the pre-order costumes but they don’t show up on my vita anyway to fix this?

    3) in the future when you guys release more stages and updates will you guys put a feature were you play with people with the DLC also? EX: uncharted multiplayer has a DLC setting.

    4) will you guys add more variety in the rival thing EX: Drake vs sweet tooth XD he hates clowns

    5) any word on Isaac Clarke…(dead space) the dead space series has supported PS like bioshock

    6) can you guys make a post were people can write what characters they’ll like in the game :)

    Thanks

  • @ 5 and anyone else asking about Crash and Spyro

Crash and Spyro are owned by Activision so its on them to want them in game.

  • Can’t wait! I love Gravity Rush and Starhawk, so I’m stoked to see Kat and Emmett in this game. That stage looks amazing as well! It’s going to be a long wait for release for me!

Loving the game so far, guys!

  • Will there be new trophies to earn with this DLC?

  • I think everyone here will agree that we would gladly pay for Crash, and Sypro DLC. I know you guys have tried really hard to get them, and it is in Activision’s hands now. I hope we get more DLC to add to the replay value of this game. Speaking of which:

    1. Will these new characters have their own story?
    2. Will the new characters have their own trophies
    3. Will the new stage have a trophy associated with Nariko’s Level 3?

Please add more DLC to keep this game fresh!!

  • I also wonder how it will work as more DLC is available …. can you play online against folks who didn’t purchase new levels etc., or will the new levels only work for folks who bought them ? I’m in for all DLC & will pay for it …. I’m giving PS ASBR for Christmas gifts …. great game with hours of fun.

  • I hope this game is a huge success. I’m telling as many people about it as possible, I even bought the shirts and I plan on buying the physical disc copy even though I have the digital copy. Heck, I even bought a Vita to let my brother play this game (he lives in another continent).

The reason I love this game is FFA, usually in 1v1 fighting games a majority of the casual audience lose interest because they just keep getting wiped with the floor online in this game FFA makes things more chaotic and random (and sure it is not a true representation of skill) but it DOES give the underdogs a chance to win more games than tight 1v1 and they get a chance to do well and keep loving the game as well. The pros can always still play 1v1. This way both casual and pro audiences are covered.

I cannot wish SuperBot enough success, they sure made my gaming experience SO much more enjoyable, even my Dad knows some of the characters (I play this game so much!) and has a chuckle when he sees Sackboy take on Kratos!

  • I am really hating the DLC concept, Gravity Rush had like 4 DLC (us $4.00 each) 450kb each? That doesn’t sound like DLC it should be called Unlock Content, since it is already at the game. I hope this game doesn’t turn a bunch of Unlock Contents every week..

    • Heys smyque, Kat, Emmett, and the Fearless level are all “Download Content,” in that they do not appear on disk, and you must download them to gain access. And remember, Kat and Emmett are free for two weeks!

  • no nippon ichi characters on this game?blasphemy! :P

  • @24
    WHAT?
    Heavenly Sword 2 by SuperBot?

Anna Torv (Nariko mocap) has a Heavenly Sword 2 animation in her IMDB page.

Omar, can it happen? Can you say just a “maybe”?

  • i really must know why wasnt there any RPG/JRPG representation in the main game its one of the biggest genres

  • as @45, just logged to post my congrats, awesome job guys! This DLC looks awesome too. :)

  • Cool stuff, I got the game with my Vita and the gameplay is growing on me. I’m glad to see Stage DLC too. Though you guys continue picking weird characters like the Starhawk guy. But I’m glad it’s gonna be free.

  • I agree a MK rep would be awesome! (sub zero or scorpion)

  • @11 Blkant I main Sir Dan. I can tell you he feels pretty balanced. I wouldn’t mind a slight speed increase. The lvl one is not as spamable as other lvl ones in the game but you can hit/stun confirm it. Even after you cast it you can direct it to go straight up or even behind you. Its even easier to confirm on larger characters like other Sir Dans, Sweet Tooth, and Big Daddy for example.
As for Kratos I feel he gains AP really easily maybe that could be adjusted it wouldn’t take too much to fix that. I mean do to much and he would suck. My main problem with fighting him is that grapple chain it does. People abuse the heck out of it!! The worst part about getting it is that it knocks you back so much. Every time I fall for it I’m always like “GLAHHH!! Get over here! I’m gonna do Zeus a huge solid… get in good on Olympus.”

  • I am holding out on buying this game unil the true PLAYSTAION ALL-STARS are added.
    CRASH BANDICOOT characters
    And Robbit from Jumping Flash
These are what I think of when I think classic PlayStation.
I’m glad to see Parappa, but don’t forget about your classic legacy here!!

  • Never been a huge fan of Heavenly Sword, but the new stage is looking awesome, as are Kat and Emmett… and what the hey, might as well throw in my character request too. Robbit for PS All-Stars!

  • I saw one of the comments saying that SuperBot should add a MK rep, but I think that if they are to add Sub-Zero, they will feel obligated to add Scorpion in it as well. After all, one cannot go without the other.

Anyway, is it only the new characters that are free for 2 weeks? Or the stage is too, as well? Also, is the DLC truly Cross-Buy? I’m asking it mostly because PS All-Stars is the only ”true” game I have on my Vita (MLB 12 The Show doesn’t count).

    • Heys AfroGamerNinja, while Kat and Emmett have indeed been announced as free for two weeks, we’re still figuring out how we’re going to handle Fearless. And if I understand your second question correctly, yes, the DLC is for both PS Vita and PS3.

  • hey super bot im glad to see kat and emmet in action and i look forward to playing as them now to the point:

1- will these two be rivals and will they be treated the same as the original 20?

2- since you brought back some old school classics have you considered a rep from blood omen oddworld and mortal kombat?

3- if your adding new characters and psp chars why not the travler from journey and fred from dead head fred?

4- will we expect more DLC in 2013?

5- can you please fix dante’s guns?

6- will future DLC include something for the original 20?

7- lastly i would like to thank the superbot member for making this fun and competitive game me and my friends enjoy every second of it

THANK YOU SUPERBOT FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND I HOPE YOU HAVE ALLOT OF SUCCESS FOR YOUR OTHER GAMES AND HOPE THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL

    PSASBR ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

    • Heys XxKumaHoshiroxX,

      1. Yes and yes!
      2. Yes!
      3. Great suggestions!
      4. Yes!
      5. We think Dante’s guns work pretty well, but if there’s a particular issue that you’d like us to take a look at, we’re listening!
      6. Possibly!
      7. You’re welcome and thank you very much!

  • Love the game! Also got six of my friends to buy it! lol Hope to see more PS one characters like Brave Fencer Musashi, Dart, Chrono, Tomba! keep up the great work!

  • Omar I hope your still F5’ing this comments section. I wanted to ask about the problems people are having with titles not showing up after the season was over. As in whats up with that? Is this issue being worked on or is it just a matter of the servers taking a long time to reward those individuals? I haven’t seen any official response to this.

  • Thanks for adding Kat.
    My sister will be thrilled!

  • Will there be new trophies for the two new fighters and stage?

  • HEY OMAR!!!!! (hope he isn’t gone)

Really enjoying the game, but is it possible for you guys to patch custom soundtracks into the game…..the PS3 version at least?

    P.S.
    FOLKLORE’s Ellen for DLC

  • The game is great and looking forward to more. Just a suggestion…the guy from Yakuza and the girl from Valkyria Chronicles. Make it happen. Thanks

  • Hello Omar , first of all I want to excuse any grammar errors in this comment , my English is definitly not perfect seeing as I’m just 14 years old and I’m learning it in school! :)

So , my question , don’t you guys think you nerfed Sackboy a little too hard?
I mean , yeah he does gain AP quite fast , I do still feel like it’s a little too much of a nerf seeing as other characters like Raiden or Kratos gain AP extremly fast too!

And I don’t think Dante’s gun’s need a buff , they are mainly used to extend combo’s anyways , so yeah I think they work great :)

Thanks for reading Omar , and thanks for making such an amazing game Superbot!

    Greetings from Germany. :)

    • Heys Abbi200xHi, I was just in Germany this summer, attending gamescom in Cologne. It was a great experience!

Regarding Sackboy, it’s hard to say whether or not these changes were too severe. We’ll monitor the effects of the changes to see if we’ve gone too far (or not far enough). Of course, we look at the performance of all characters, and we agree, Kratos does indeed generate a tremendous amount of AP. We’re looking into ways to address this.

  • Thanks for answering the titles question. I’m loving this game you guys did a great job. Another thing… Have/can you put I higher difficulty in arcade mode then All-Star? (no I have no idea what you would call it since the top is all ready All-Star.) Also can you guys add a mercy rule to the 3 minute matches in arcade.11 points maybe? Yah I realize how this comment sounds… I’m not trying to sound like some ultra bada$$.

  • Hello, future customer here. I will eventually buy All Stars. I was on the fence and the pre-order bonus basically had me. But the roster size…… I’m sure you understand in a game like this content is King and there just wasn’t enought characters for me. That said, hopefully enough people have bought the game to warrant ALOT of character and level DLC (and maybe another mode with health bars, the other thing that made me not buy btw, it even could have made me look past the roster size.). Once the rosters at 30 or so, I’ll be buying the game.

And to the person who brought up Mortal Kombat character being added, I would have bet all my $ one would’ve been in All-Stars’ launch roster. Kratos was in MK-Sony fighting game-it just makes sense. I hope it happens, and if it does, as a die-hard MK fan, I would hope it’s not the obvious Sub-Zero or Scorpion even though they are the faces of MK. I think Raiden and Shao Kahn would be absolute perfect fits for All-Stars play style. Electricity, teleport, superman, elecric-grab and Hammer, ground and air charges, Kahn’s projectiles, grab and punch. Perfect AND different.

  • @60: You realize the DLC came out in Japan ages before we even got the game right? Why make DLC bigger than need be after localizing the game after DLC is already done? Shove the data on the cart to save space and just use unlock keys for those versions. Japanese version of the game didn’t have the DLC on the cart, since the DLC wasn’t done when the game came out there.

    It’s called efficiency.

  • Great game i love it!
im with others who allways wanted a team ICO into the game but i feel like a stage is more fitting then a character.

so how about ICO mixed with Escape plan? both have very high contrast with Black and white and both have to do with escaping.

  • Sorry, but I’m confused on how this DLC will work. If you download the DLC within the two weeks, will it be free the third week or will you have to pay? Also, is there a way we can test play the DLC before it comes out, like a beta test? Thanks SuperBot for making an awesome game, I play this everyday and I love it! You guys are my second favorite development team, number one is NaughtyDog.

    • Heys ThePolice_24_7, Naughty Dog is a pretty great developer! If you download the DLC within the first two weeks, it will be free for you to use forever! Regarding DLC test play, Santa Monica Studios Lead Designer Seth Killian has suggested a sort of test server that would allow exactly that. I think that sounds very interesting!

  • @83: It isn’t hard.

You get it free TO KEEP if you download within the first two weeks. If you miss that window you have to buy it. smh

  • First of all really nice work on the game, this will be one of those games which i will look after 10 years and remember how fun it was. few questions though?

    1) Will the Pre-order costumes be on the store at some point? Will they be sold on package or can u buy them individually?

    2) This is really important question regarding “Esports” will you implant spectator system? So people will be able to spectate games and do Casting via Stream (Twitch, Own3d etc.) Would help a lot the active Community hosted tournaments.

    3) Lot of people have asked this, so i ask it too i guess. The Ability to change Controller 2, 3 and 4 names? instead of my name and adding number end of it, it kinda looks silly and stupid.

    4) Will there be Trophies added via DLC? Such as Emmett Storyline or Using Nariko’s Super 3 at Fearless?

    5) User Interface looks kinda old, i’m not sure did u want to go retro with it, but i would like to atleast change the color of it and character on background through options, rather than restarting game 19 times. :/

Thats what i have pretty much now, keep up the good work, i’m hoping to see some good balance patches too.

  • I also have a question about the DLC characters, these and future additions. I read in your last Blog post that the DLC characters will have an alternate to unlock. I’m curious if DLC characters will also all have a 3rd costume in the vein of the pre-order bonus costumes all the other characters have.

Also, will the pre-order costume pack ever become available to purchase at some point in the future for future customers like myself. Just curious about that, because that was a REALLY good pack.

  • Yes, please consider giving the option to choose the number and which backgrounds we want to randomize. For instance, I can choose my 5 favourite character backgrounds to randomize. That would be cool :)

  • Oh and Custom Soundtracks??? :) I love the music in game but I want to play this game for years to come… so having our own music play via XMB would be cool too.

  • The new stage looks great, although I do have to admit I am still waiting on seeing some JRPG characters as DLC before I take the plunge into the game. That particular genre is one of the bigger ones for the PS3. In fact, if you look at the monthly sales of PS1 classics, usually the top list is made of Final Fantasy.

I would pick up this game in a heartbeat if you were to announce Selvaria from Valkyria Chronicles or Etna from Disgaea or Cloud/Lightning/Sephiroth from the Final Fantasy series. I know the emphasis obviously has to be on Western titles, but you can’t say you’re celebrating the history of the Playstation brand without celebrating a genre that many people, myself included, bought our systems for.

Many of us are just waiting for those characters (as well as maybe Goro from Yakuza or Abe from the Oddworld games). I really do hope we’ll be hearing some good news on representatives like that in the future.

  • And do keep in mind, the creators of the Disgaea series and the creators of Oddworld have both said they’d love to have DLC representatives in this game, so you should be on the phone to them if you aren’t already (Etna from Disgaea and Abe would be awesome, or even The Stranger, if you’re looking for a more recent Oddworld title).

  • i kinda regret buying this game. I thought for sure there would be more to do in this game if you were playing buy yourself. but there isn’t.

The story/arcade mode is so lazy, even worse than the first Smash Bros for N64. The menu design and presentation are so basic and some of the characters feel worthless (despite there only being 20).

i wish i had just rented this instead. I at least was fortuante enough to get the disk version so i can trade it back and get something.

I really hope you guys put more effort into the single player content and add more unlockable stuff than just pointless background images for the online profile. Brawl had unlockable music, items, characters, and stages.

  • Also, last comment (I actually had all of this in one comment, but they told me it was too big)…

Have you guys considered a traditional 1 vs 1 fighting game mode? Where instead of whoever gets the most kills, it comes down to lifebars, like in most fighting games? I mean, you ARE all fighting game people, so I’m rather surprised it didn’t get considered.

    • Heys again clupula688, the game was really designed with the Super mechanic (and AP accrual as the heart of that mechanic) in mind. I know it seems like throwing a health bar into the mix would be an easy thing, but really it is not!

  • @Omar thanks for your reply and congratulations on the game, it’s really good for a new IP. I just wish Sony hadn’t included an online pass with this game, it won’t help the community at all, really foolish move on their part.

  • Just bought a PS Vita and plan on picking up PS All-Stars for the holidays, but I have a few questions:

    1. Since I just got the Vita (and don’t own a PS3), I didn’t get to try the game out in beta. Any plans on releasing the demo on PSN? I played it briefly at GameStop, but couldn’t stay there long enough to really get a feel for it.

    2. I know you said other characters will be released as DLC aside from Kat & Emmett – have you guys actually been in talks with other devs and greenlit certain characters, or is it still up in the air? I understand that you don’t want to announce names yet, but just wanted to know if you guys actually have exact characters planned and aren’t simply “hoping”. (eg. Saying you’d love to add an MK character isn’t the same thing as saying you’re actively discussing it with the MK devs).

    3. For future DLC characters, will they be offered free for two weeks (or some other time frame) like Kat & Emmett? I ask because this is a game that can obviously benefit from a lot of DLC characters, but I tend to steer clear of games that force you to constantly buy DLC to stay competitive and completely involved in the online community (eg. Dungeon Defenders).

    Thanks!

  • PS. I know you can’t answer this, but please, please, please add Crash! He’s such an iconic PS character, I’m shocked he wasn’t in the launch roster. He’s been around since the original PS and has had way more games than some of the other characters in the list. Similarly, I’m shocked Spyro isn’t there as well, though to a slightly lesser degree since I wasn’t as into that. Still, I can definitely see them being rivals since they’re both “animals”, so make it happen! I think if you add those two characters, a lot more people will be excited about the game – as of now, I still see too many friends mocking it as a poor SSB-clone with lame characters, which is not fair at all.

  • Omar!! My good man! Just a few easy questions, that I’m sure you can answer without giving away anything!

    1) Will Kat be cell-shaded in the final build of her character? (She is in her own game, and you got Sly’s art down!)

    2) Will Kat speak French? Aw, that’d be SO hot!

    3) (This is more of a suggestion!) Kat’s alternate should be Raven :) (The ‘evil’ Gravity Rush gal!)

    • Heys AnalBlitzkrieg,

      1. Kat will get the Sly Cooper treatment!
      2. In Gravity Rush, Kat speaks a pseudo French/Japanese and yes, she will speak the same way in All-Stars!
      3. Cool idea!

  • Are you guys aware that the Belt Titles didn’t work for many people after the first season? If so, can you fix it?

Thanks! Great work on the game thus far! :)

  • @94 yeah the dungeon defender dlc situation is ridiculous. I had that game from the beginning. They aren’t even that interested in patching the game at times.

  • Hey Omar,

This question was asked, and partial answered, but for real, what is up with the vita preorder costumes not working? I already inputted the code into the PSN Store, but it said its not downloadable on the vita.

1Are there 2 different codes, or is the same code suppose to work for both ps3 and vita?

I think this would solve a lot of issues if you could answer that for us. If there are two different codes then maybe I can press Gamestop for my vita code. But if its suppose to work for both systems, then maybe you guys can issue another code for vita, for those who did redeem their code for ps3. Thanks a lot for any response! Great game btw!

  • Awesome! Can’t wait the new map looks awesome and Emmet is BA.
In Sweet tooth’s map when it meshes with Jak 2, you can’t really see the background very well, could you guys please make it more visible? I love Jak 2 but you cant really see the back:(

Man I love this game, I’m hoping to see some Ratchet: Deadlocked Armor for Ratchet!
