PlayStation Plus: Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Free for Members

Morgan Haro's Avatar + Posted by Morgan Haro on Dec 10, 2012 // Community Manager, PlayStation Digital Platforms

This week PlayStation Plus continues the piping hot delivery of updates to keep you warm this December. Last week, you took the plunge into the underwater world of Rapture with BioShock 2 joining the Instant Game Collection. This week, you’ll be busting out your shoryukens and controlling gravity with two great games: Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Rochard!

Don’t have PlayStation Plus? Go to the PlayStation Store on your PS3 or PS Vita or click here to get access.

December 11th PlayStation Plus Update

Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (PS3)

Free for Plus members

Street Fighter IV was already a bonafide hit when it ushered in a new era of 2D fighters. Take that winning formula, refine and balance one of the best fighting game engines, add four new characters (Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu, and Oni), take part in new online modes and you’ve got one of the most complete fighting game packages ever. See you online; I’ll be the guy using this handy guide to my all time favorite fighting game character.
Rochard (PS3)

Free for Plus members

A PSN gem, Rochard brings fantastic puzzle-platforming in the form of taking control of astro-miner John Rochard. Though a humble premise it may be, you’ll be addicted to the gravity control mechanics of Rochard as you solve environmental puzzles and explore new ways to navigate the wonderful trappings of this galactic platformer. It’s a PSN exclusive that, if you missed, you should definitely make the time to play. You can read more on the game from the PlayStation Blog’s coverage. Please note, this title will only be available free in Plus for one week.

That’s it for this week’s update, and remember that the above updates will be in effect once the PlayStation Store updates on December 11th; usually between the times of 2:00pm – 5:00pm PST. Also, for those wondering, we do have PS Vita games on the way in December that will add to the already great library of content on PS Vita Plus. Watch for those to be announced in this space later this month.

What content do you find most compelling for this update?

Why the hell are we getting our 5th fighting game? This is just dumb, Street fighter might be a good game, but there is no reason to have 5 fighting games in less than 6 months, and on top of that we still don’t have any racing games, RPG’s, and the only sports game we have is BLITZ. Why would you give another fighting game? I understand that some people like fighting games, but there are also some people that don’t like them, and adding a fifth fighting game just doesn’t make any sense.

Rochard is a really well made game. The demo sold me on it and I bought it the day it was released.

@99 Journey is going to be riding GOTY buzz for a few months and Unfinished Swan seems way too new to offer free. I’ve been holding off on it assuming a Plus discount in the near future.

I’ve always had my eye Rochard, but thought the ship had sailed on it every being offered free for Plus subs given its age. A nice bonus this week!

Ain’t too shabby. Always been a fence-sitter with Street Fighter 4 (I generally am terrible at fighting games) and Rochard will be another game that I’ve always wanted to play but just never had the extra cash. Great work folks!

I *REALLY* hope that the PLUS customer research doesn’t indicate that we want a lot of fighting games because that is NOT TRUE for me at all and will make me quite disappointed. Enough fighting games already please, more action, action/adventure, third person shooters please. But no more fighters (ONE exception: Soul Calibur).

Nice! I already own Rochard, but I’m glad others will get to play it now. I haven’t owned any version of SFIV, so I’m happy to be able to give that a shot. Now if only I could pull myself away from Dark Souls and Gravity Rush.

Nothing for me this week. Or the last couple of weeks. I’m getting a bit tired of being jealous of EU Plus, especially this month. I don’t think it’s reasonable to create a dummy EU account and subscribe to Plus again to get access to their better tier of games — not while I have an active NA subscription, anyway.

I can’t fault the service — Plus is the best deal in gaming, well worth the subscription for most people. I’m just starting to wonder if I might not be most people.

@111 Morgan answered that in an earlier comment. He said it’s only slated for Plus in Europe.

Unfinished Swan, Journey, Rainbow Moon, and Tokyo Jungle are all excellent suggestions of PSN games that would make for “amazing” selections in PlayStation Plus.

I know it’s a court of opinions, but I don’t play fighters, nor did I care for that batman games. I like that PS+ is trying to find that rare gem to put on plus.

I even bought the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Box Set got an extra copy of the Disc game. It would of been so much better if they had Gave Digital Versions also in that set. But they didn’t! :(

Great update as always! I love it, but does Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition have any sort of story mode or anything to it that I can really get into and play for hours? Or will it be like Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown and only have tournament ladders or something. It was still a great title, but I would have liked to have something with a little more to it like an actual story mode. Either way great update! Looking forward to playing Rochard and also looking forward to more Vita titles! #NeverStopPlaying

And are you really not going to have any PS Plus discounts? If you aren’t giving us Black Knight Sword, you could have at least offered us a discount on it and the Detective Dee game.

I’m starting to believe you guys won’t even have a Christmas psn deal either. You didn’t have one during the for black friday/cyber monday period. :(

Still enjoying Bioshock 2, (my first bioshock) so thanks again PS Plus. I may try out SSFIV, I heard good things about it.
@Morgan hoping for some more discounts- PS3, PSN, Vita, something!

@People (still) complaining about plus, if you really want “this game” or “that game” sooo badly just buy it. The only thing I can sympathize for is the games that either are extremely hard to find a disc copy of, or the ones that are ridiculously expensive on the PS store. Other than that instead of spending your money on a service you don’t like go buy something you’ll actually enjoy.

Ok I know I was one of the bigger whistleblowers last week with bioshock 2 but ease up people….we’ve gotten 2 retail games and 1 decent psn title…they’re listening to us and giving us better content with ssf4ae…milked franchise or not they very easily could’ve just given us ssf4 with no arcade edition or even just street fighter 4…and if its really so bad then go sign up for XBL gold….where you pay more and get nothing but the ability to play online and to be inundated by advertisements

@118 Jet Set Radio is so freaking dated. Sega couldn’t be bothered to improve the camera issues, much like their HD remakes of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. So i wouldn’t consider that game a plus over EU.

Nice update. Well, it’s just a personal taste. For casual fighting gamer like me, it is difficult to follow updates or special editions of each major franchise. How many FFIV editions are there, actually?
I really don’t need main stream block buster games on PS+, because I buy them on first day.
Please keep focusing on great niche games for PS+. It would help me to break the boundary of gaming experience.

@101 Assuming you meant 92 instead of 94, i wasn’t comparing the benefits of both services. I was only using my XBL experience to explain why I might be more foregiving of PS+’s shortcomings than others. I was pointing out that Gold was a service I had subscribed to for a long time before understanding it didn’t really offer anything to me personally that I wasn’t already receiving on PSN. For people who are hardcore about their online experiences, friends lists, and leaderbards, the Gold is a great option. PS+ has proven itself in the last year to be a much more compatible subscription service for me and my gaming tastes.

Wasn’t there a voting poll within last few months with the option of viewing the whole month’s plus offerings at once taking the win? Sorry to say, and I rarely comment here, but with the big difference between the quality of games compared to EU, I’d rather be disappointed once a month than four.

Unrelated, but you guys may want to take a look at Tekken Tag Tournament 2′s DLC and Update and bring it to namco’s attention. I have gotten a response from either sony or namco on this when contacted. I was forced to restore my PS3 recently due to a hard drive swap I was doing and found an issue where the game will crash the PS3 if you do the following in order.

Install DLC
Install Update
Start Game

It never fails 100% crash on 3 separate PlayStation 3′s that I own and on a friends PS3. Model seems to make no difference either, tried it on my 60 gig and my slim 120. I think I had to delete the games DLC and the update to get it working. I think I eventually had to first time boot the game wtih no DLC and no Update, do the install and thats what got it working again. This is not really a good think to have considering it takes 45 minutes or more to get all of that content installed on a PS3.
