Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas PS2 Classic Hits PlayStation Store Today

We’d like to let all PlayStation fans know that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to PlayStation Store as a ‘PS2 Classic’ in today’s update. That means you can revisit the cities of Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, as well as the surrounding countryside and mountains, exactly as they appeared on the PlayStation 2 back in 2004, on your PS3.

To help you prepare we’ve raided our archives for a video called ‘The Introduction’. This 20-minute prologue video highlights the action in the days before the story in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas begins. The Introduction is told from various characters’ viewpoints, which are intertwined together to reveal the network of organized crime forces operating throughout the state of San Andreas. Tension builds as threats are carried out, stakes are raised and communication breaks down. In Los Santos, a drive-by shooting in Grove Street Family’s territory ignites a series of events to be further explored in the game.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas hits PlayStation Store today for $14.99 / €14.99 / £11.99.

  • This is good, but i would love to play Bully: Scholarship Edition on PS3 since it was released on X360 and Wii.

  • i agree with the price tag but this is GTA:SA and i know that the time im gonna spend playing it is worth more than full $60 games…

PS: btw, i bought the gta collection off steam a while ago and nothing beats the feeling of playing it on your PS console

    Groove Street fo life, yo!

  • 15 bucks for a PS2 classics?

    what?

Rockstar can make an enhanced version of GTA for iOS but why they have to put these cheap, lazy versions on PSN???

at least make it a port, not a PS2 classics that run on the emulator with terrible graphics.

  • awesome game, sure… but i still have both my PS2 game as well as the PC version… for the record, i actually had 2 copies of the PS2 game.. it’s too bad we can’t play this on the VIta… then it’d be more enticing…

    can’t wait for GTA5…

  • I have been playing GTA from the genre-introducing first on the PC in the 90’s. The concept of this game just blew my mind. Hooked ever since, San Andreas is arguably the best of the spread. It introduced various new elements and mini-games to expand upon an excellent foundation.

Unfortunately, I agree with the previous posts. I won’t “re-visit” Grove Street. However, I hope those who NEVER experienced San Andreas will check it out…. maybe, if they don’t like trophies and have Holiday cash perhaps?

  • I don’t think it would be a good idea to port a 40+ Gb game to PS Vita. I don’t know that much about the vita but I doubt it has that sort of storage unless it’s modded.

  • –> straight port, no remaster
    –> no trophies
–> they raised the price to $15 (is this a joke?)

    but most of all…

    –> they SKIPPED Vice City?

Can someone from Rockstar provide a simple clarification about why San Andreas is out and Vice City is not? And could you PLEASE provide some insight into WHEN we can expect Vice City?

    Thank you.

  • $15 is too much. you can play this on steam for $15 and play online

  • Oops, my bad, it’s only 4.2 Gb, but still, that’s pretty big for an old ps2 game.

  • Wow. Few comments about this:

    – I’m shocked that San Andreas is available on PSN in ANY form at all. I honestly didn’t believe I’d ever see San Andreas on any Playstation device other than PS2 when it seemed clear that Rockstar wasn’t going to bring this particular GTA game or the San Andreas map to the PSP devices. Bravo Rockstar!

    – Yes, $15 is too much for an unchanged PS2 classic, but obviously, Rockstar knows most of the die-hard GTA fans/suckers will buy it anyway (myself included). Several years of Dualshock 3 use leave my PS2 controllers too uncomfortable for me to use these days, so I don’t mind paying for the convenience of playing on the PS3.

    – Although I haven’t watched that intro yet, I’m willing to bet its the same intro that was sent on a DVD included with select copies of the GTA San Andreas PS2 game when it came out oh so long ago. It was a nice touch to the story, even though I don’t remember anything exciting.

Really looking forward to playing this with the comforts of my PS3.

  • If you guys feel ripped off how do you think we feel in New Zealand? Our currency is doing very well at the moment with $1NZ being worth 0.85cents yet we are being charged $27 for san andreas, an 8year old game lol yes it’s a goody but it’s 8years old and nothings been changed for the better! Converted, the $27 NZ is worth $23 US…….. $23US!!!!! How they justify that is beyond me. That comment posted by rockstar saying that the price is fair and compared to other pricings is complete and utter bull! I along with many others will definitley not be purchasing this again! Thanks alot Rockstar, after so many years of buying your games ( I own every title available to ps1, ps2, ps3 and psp) I feel like you have just taken advantage of the people that keep you afloat, time to consider pulling out of my GTAV pre order I think. You greedy pigs dont deserve any more of my hard earned money!!!

  • I understand that there’s opportunity here for people to speak their minds but after 20 or more people have complained about the price point of the game and Rockstar has personally responded, why continue complaining?

If you don’t like the price then don’t buy the game. Money talks and BS walks but the even as the BS is walking out the door, it complains the whole dang time around here.

  • WHEN WILL THIS BE RELEASED FOR PSN IN NZ !?!?!?

  • They should also add in Bully and The Warriors for sale !!!!! Yeeeah Buddy

  • $15 is not much indeed, but I skip this and playing a REAL game, called RED DEAD REDEMPTION… til I wait for the GTA 5. GTA 5 can be the next and second big thing after RDR. IMO. San Andreas was a great game a looooooooong time AGO. Cheers.

  • I was totally surprised when i saw this on my random search through the psn! £12 is a lot for an old ps2 game, but this is an exception! One of my favorite games ever!

  • I will 100% purchase this game if they somehow managed to integrate an online multiplayer free roam, but I highly doubt this would be the case. Maybe if it was a HD remastered version, but I don’t think 6 years was long enough for Rockstar to manage that

  • It should be No more than $10. The disc version for PC has a MSRP of $10. while the the downloadable version for PC is $15. PC versions have more value, but because all software made for PS3 has to be approved by Sony, the Software for it costs more because of all of the fees and licences associated with it. This is mostly how Sony makes revenue off of their playstation 3. Consoles are cash machines for it’s makers. The only reason I still play PS3 is because the developers F@#$ over the PC platform and only release and/or provide the most support for consoles. otherwise I’d might sell my ps3 for a good PC.

  • Where is CJ’s other leg he only has one leg? i wish it was in HD with Trophy support rather than a ps2 classic..

  • I find it amusing that RockStar has no comments towards the price complaints. I mean if they have the gall to over charge their fans, at least give us insight onto why it’s like that. But then again, why would they even bother?

Oh wait, we do know. All of you people at RockStar have dollar signs for eyes and can’t see you’re actually losing fans, not gaining

  • I can’t say I blame anyone for complaining about the price here… Sony has, through past action, created an expectation for the price of PS2 games on PSN. So, the unrest is understandable when expecting fans find that their highly anticipated PS2 title releases at 1.5X the price of others. However… Supply and Demand is one of the principals of retail, isn’t it? Can we really blame them for capitalizing on the game’s success?

(I don’t think they ever explicitly stated that all PS2 games would be $9.99 – if that were the case, this would be a little different.)

  • It isn’t even about $5 dollars, Its the disrespect to your loyal fans by showing your greed and laziness of not making this an hd remake. I thought you were a different game company rockstar. Shame on you.

  • Come on guys, we’re talking about the best game on the history of videogames!!
Those 15$ worths to me more than 60$ I just spend on Black Ops 2 that next year I won’t use anymore…
The graphic is still a little better on the PC version, but at least i can play it in the great room!!
Thanks PSN and Rockstar (i hope you’ll make another game with Carl Johnson)

  • @AreYouTheFaiman it’s already out on psn in New Zealand but it’s $28 which converted to US currency is $23.63.
Laker818 said “It isn’t even about $5 dollars, Its the disrespect to your loyal fans by showing your greed and laziness of not making this an hd remake. I thought you were a different game company rockstar. Shame on you.”

That is exactly how I feel.

All kiwis and auzzies should read this…..
$28 New Zealand dollars to buy this 8 year old game on psn in New Zealand/Aus. Converted it’s $23.63 american dollars. If that’s not a hard enough slap in the face, I just checked eb games in Nz and it’s $18 brand new on ps2 so you get map, poster etc!! WTF Rockstar?!!! Have you not made enough money off this one title alone? Drop the price or I refuse to buy it!!!

  • I don’t care if its 14.99 well at least it better then buying some piece of crap at the store for 59.99 and this game was my favorite when i first played and i remember playing it every days till the ps3 came out and rockstar you surprised me by putting this in psn i thought it would never come to ps3 or any other playstation consoles but hey you surprised me with the best game i ever played and i hope for future a vice city coming out and a hd of san andreas and why not free for the people who bought the 14.99$ san andreas lol…good job rockstar

  • I agree with some of the suggestions that this should have been ported to the PS Vita. There wasn’t any graphics upgrade or trophies. RS should brought the experience to the Vita instead of trying to revisit on the home console with no significant graphics improvement.

  • And why not free for the people that paid $15 for san andreas lol, your a dreamer venom? If they were to release it in a hd version (which I doubt) it would be double the price and by then your $15 digital version won’t be worth a cent.

  • Really REALLY wish this was available for the vita. I would probably pay $30 for Vita version.

  • Guys it is rockstar for you but it is the same price as it is on xbox live. People grow up please who cares it is 5 dollars more. If you love grand theft auto games then you will buy it.

  • Woah, i am a huge fan of RS when it comes to GTA, i’ve beat them all starting from GTAI of course, Oh how i loved to throw grenades at people just to see them blow up on the screen, but 15 extra for a PS2 classic when what PS2 games were retailed at $50 new, So basically paying (what I paid back then and to play it now combined) $75 just to play it on the ps3 pretty much, could of added trophies and in HD, The graphics weren’t so good and seeing how I have a 1080P it would look horrible, Um, I will definitely just hold off for GTA5, the interview after the guys watched the demo on gameinformer and the trailers, looks amazing!

  • Maybe if Sony would add it to the instant collection, I would play it again only now on the ps3

  • Yo, whoever said it about CJ’s leg hahahaha, I just seen it OMG the screenshot alone tells you that in needs to be tweaked!!!! hahaha, but yeah, def pass til GTA5

  • @JimCarreyForYou

    Grove*

    :D

  • Really excited that finally rockstar and sony put san andreas on the store. best game on ps2 hands down.. great price too.THANKS SONY,another reason why im a loyal fan..

  • @ all the people complaining about the price of san andreas, first of all san andreas is classic hands down.second of all i think san andreas’s price is very great, heck id pay 25 to 30 dollars for it,Quit Complaining

  • There are some games that you have to have it any way you can, I have two versions of GTA:SA for the PS2 (origanial and greatest hits) as well as the PC. I had to get this for the PS3 when it hit, I hate turning on the PS2 for disk read errors and its great to play again until GTA V comes out. If you are complaining about the cost, Sure $15 is more but i remember paying $50.00 for it the day it came out and another $30 or $40 for the Greatest hits three pack. Go play on your tiny iOS screens or on the PC if you want, I will play it the was it was best played, on a PlayStation Controller. It would of been nice for a HD upgrade becasue it does look like poop compaired to current games, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. Most of us have dumped hundreds of hours playing this game and i plan on playing hundreds more. Thanks Rockstar and PSN.

  • Is there anyway you can add a updated control style to this game and any other GTA game that would be awsome Thanks

  • Guys Rockstar is hard at work on GTA V, maybe after the release of GTA V they can compile some GTA Classics collection and people who are complaining about PS2 classics being $10 and this game being $15, please be quiet. $5 is not that much considering people dump around $20 for PlayStation Plus. Also, I dumped $50 for Premium on Battlefield 3. I already have this game on the PC, so I wouldn’t bother to buy it. And, HD textures are hard to make for such a big game. If they do make HD textures for San Andreas, expect GTA V to be delayed.

  • Is there online play? If so ill buy it.

  • Otherwise there is no point of buying it if i already play it on PS2 still.

  • Every other PS2 classic is $10. Even GTA3 is $10. Lower the price $5 and I’ll buy it. That’s a bit much for a PS2 game even if it is San Andreas.

  • Btw, just noticed R* “responses” to some of the feedback of a few posters, QUIT BEING SO DANGED GREEDY!!! It’s not that I can’t afford it, I could buy it right now if I wanted to. It’s the principal of the matter. This is just another way to get a quick cash grab and they know it.

  • Quite pathetic to me really, why pay 15 dollars for a game that’s so old, don’t get me wrong its an amazing classic but come on Sony, no more then 10 bucks… No for me. As well as looking at past comments EVERYONE is saying the same thing, why not lower the price by even 5 dollars and satisfy your customers..

  • Another thing is, there’s probably not even multiplayer there is literally no reason for this to be brought out in the PS Store and not even have an updated feature.

  • for those complaining about vice city, vice city stories is on psp so i think we can all wait a little longer. i for one think the price is ok, even for a ps2 game. its more expensive than my favorite game but i wont complain about it. i will just buy it when i can and enjoy it. its not the price, its the game.

  • Couldn’t agree with the other posters more, no trophies means no buy

  • Either $5 for just the way it is, or $15 with trophies and some kind of graphics upgrade.

  • Here’s the deal guys, remember when PS3’s were backwards compatible? And then remember when Sony stopped making them backwards compatible? Sony is a bunch of money hungry scammers, and they realized, nobody would pay even $10 for a PS2 game on PSN, because they could just play their old PS2 game on their PS3 no problem. Then Sony realized that they could make far more money by screwing over their customers, and making up some bullcrap about PS2 games damaging the laser or something. They stopped making PS3’s backwards compatible, and now look, $15 for a PS2 game you’ve most likely already paid for, and up until like 5 years ago, you could still use. This is a really good scam to get all of us suckers to buy the same game twice, and charge an exorbitant sum for both. You could play your old PS2 game on your PS3 if you’re lucky enough to still have a PS3 that is backwards compatible, unfortunately, for most of us, we will be buying the same game twice, like a bunch of cattle. We’re playing right into Sony’s hands guys. This is exactly what they wanted, to see if we’d pay again.

  • Also $15?! let me know when it’s $10. Its not a big deal, 5 bucks, but its the principle of the thing. $10 is reasonable, $15 is not.
