December 18th PlayStation Plus Update

Anomaly: Warzone Earth

Anomaly Warzone Earth (PS3)

Free for Plus members

Anomaly Warzone Earth is an extraordinary mixture of action and strategy in a reversed tower defense formula. Call it tower offense, if that’s a bit easier. The game tasks you with saving a near-future Earth from an alien onslaught. The invaders have captured world’s major cities, building huge turrets that destroy everything in their path. It’s up to you to lead an armor squad through the streets of cities like Baghdad and Tokyo, planning the route and strategically choosing which units to deploy in order to crush the opposition. Download it today and experience this fantastic twist on strategy gaming.

I got a PS3 1 1/2 year ago. They were too expensive when they 1st came out & had no HD memory. I figured I’d try PS+ a month later & have been a member ever since then. Now I have a collection of over 250 games. Theres tons of stuff on PS+. Im sure some of the people who have had a PS3 for 6 years+ might have a hard time finding a game but Im loving every minute of it! I dont know if Ill like the game this week but I will atleast try it. As for the sales, I think I will get Rayman: Origins for Vita. I dont own one yet but if I dont get one from Santa I’ll get one from Gamestop cause I already have too many games NOT to get one if you include all the free PS1 games for Plus last year & some of the games compatible for both systems. The ‘statistics’ I’d like to see is how many people that said ‘Nothing for me this week” actually download something.

Keep up the good work, thanks for reading & Merry X-Mas!

We are on our 3rd PS3 system since release. Can hardly wait each week to what’s not only free, if any, but to see what new temptations are upcoming. I rarely post but I wanted to say a big thanks and a very Happy Holidays to everyone at Sony!

Just to clarify, the Sega Heritage Collection is a bundle that contains NiGHTs, Sonic Adventure 2 (both probably without their DLC packs), and Jet Set Radio (PS3).

Seeing as I already own 2 of those 3 games on different platforms (1 of them being the Vita – thank you Plus!), I won’t be buying it.

Morgan, you saying that the PS+ free games are planned weeks/months in advance (which they have to be) just underlines how shady it was this summer when PSN put out a bunch of Ultimates, and the very next week offered about 80% of those games as a part of the new free game lineup. Just Cause 2 & Infamous 2 were among them. I spent about $200 on games that I would have gotten for free if I’d waited a week. And of course, as you just admitted, you guys had to know you were doing this as it was happening– which means you were aggressively manipulating your customer base to get the last $ out of anyone you could before the games were then put up for free– the very next week. How is this not a horrible problem and an intentional buggering of your customer base? I can understand if an Ultimate deal goes up and then several months later it’s decided to make that game a free game. But the very next week? And a large handful of games that represents the majority of the initial free game offering? It definitely seems that there are reasons the PS+ Updates are not being published more than a day in advance, and they have to do with manipulating the customer base.

    I can see how you might have reached that conclusion, but its simply not true. There are a number of different teams that work with our publishing partners to get deals on the table. The instant game collection was a brand new thing then, so there was a bit of friction with regards to looking at the whole picture as we were on the fast and furious road to E3. It was certainly an oversight, but the notion of it being planned? Not true in the slightest. We heard the feedback, and I don’t think you’ve seen anything like that since. I also frankly, would never work for a spot that engaged in the practices you hypothesized, so take heart my friend; we’re not a bunch of evil dudes looking to scam you =). But just like anyone else, we might miss a thing or two. Thanks for your comment.

As for the difference between the EU and NA offerings, forget who has what game… we know that you can’t please everyone all the time. But the bottom line is that EU is getting a large percentage of AAA retail games, whereas NA is getting very old titles, third-tier releases, and PSN games. I think the main issue here would be resolved if NA would receive a similar offering of AAA retail titles, no matter what they are, with the understanding that some people will always already have some of the games, and no one is going to be catered too all of the time. There’s a huge divide when NA gets shitty games like Payday: The Heist and a handful of PSN fighters, and EU is getting stuff like Arkham Asylum. This shouldn’t take very long to communicate in meetings… the difference is clear as a cloudless sky on a crisp autumn morning. I think someone else’s comparison that EU is getting a gourmet meal while NA is getting airline food is entirely accurate, and again, this really shouldn’t be very difficult to explain to everyone else in meetings. It’s like that trailer for Movie 43 where Terrence Howard is saying to his black basketball team, “You’re black, they’re white; this ain’t hockey!”

Can i just ask why is the PSstore not unified… or at list games price wise… It is so frustrating to see how low are the psp games prices in europe, and comeback to the US psn….

I am still keeping it as my main store, because of localisation, and other little details, but when will the PSP games as cheap as european games… or at list as cheap as retail..

Come on, some of the games like ghost of sparta is a first party, and is 7 euros… why is it so expensive on the US store…

Why is there still some 39$ 3years old games… Totally out of place…

Dont you, or the editors, think it should be globally droped, as the PSP is in here last years, and Vita needs to get love… Digital games for PSP should cost 15$ max…

Glad to see the discount on LBP for Vita. I am definitely going to have to pick that up now.

I was wondering who can discount old DLC, because I was looking at the DLC for Burnout Paradise, which is a few years old. PSN should see about making a DLC bundle for games that are over 2 years old for a discounted price. Some of us who have held onto our games that long might be interested. Or it could be incentive for some people to purchase the digital titles.

Anomaly is not that great. Played it on the iPad. Typical tower defense game with a touch of C&C. I can see most vita fans are disappointed again and there’s a right to be.It’s christmas time and the obvious lack of content on the vita. Games aren’t churning out fast enough and have too many dry spells. Developers haven’t bothered porting over titles to the vita. Similarly,PSN games aren’t ported over to the vita.There’s only so many psp or ps one games we would want to play. In fact, I still own a psp so there’s no solid reason to back play games This is a real pity because as much as I want my vita to be the go-to device each time, I end up at times bringing my 3DS out to play New Super Mario Bros. Since Uncharted golden abyss, we’ve had old games ported to the vita, 2nd stringers or spin-offs which weren’t too great. The best were probably console ports of Need for speed most wanted, Virtual Tennis 4, the soon to be released sonic all stars transformed which then begs the question. Why are those the best games for the vita?
The vita is obviously missing many great games which should be on it but aren’t on it.

I do not know if this is some sick joke on Sony’s part or not, but this week and the few weeks before that have been god-awful. The sales are a joke compared to EU and just about every other PC digital retailer. The IGC is a joke compared to EU. Anomaly Warzone Earth? This game has been practically on sale for the whole year and you could get it for PC and Android on the cheap during the Humble Bundle.

Catherine a year old puzzle game for $20? Uh, no thank you. I think I’ll spend this week playing Hitman: Absolution on the PC. A one month old AAA game for $20, right now on Amazon PCDD. No joke. Dead Island GOTY for $6, Crysis 1 + Warhead + Crysis 2 for $15, Kingdoms of Amalur plus both DLCs at $12 (now selling for $50 on PSN without any DLC!). Coming soon Dark Souls PTD Edition for $15 (the same price for the DLC alone on PSN!). Darksiders II plus all DLCs for $20. That is how you run a sale. Not this joke on PSN. Skyrin is $20 on GMG now. Rage $5 and Assassin’s Creed Revelations $11 (recently on sale in PSN for the low, low price of $40!) at GamersGate. Are you even paying attention to what is happening elsewhere?

@354

I agree with you. Sony needs to do a better job managing consumer expectations. People expect big blockbuster releases every week because PS+ has kept them in the dark for the entire month which is why there is so much disappointment. I’ve been burned 3 times buying games that ended up going up free on PS+ that same month. As a result I’ve restrained from buying any PSN games, if what I am interested in pops up on PS+ (which it likely will eventually) I’ll take it and if not I’ll pass. It’s the mentality I imagine a lot of people have.

I don’t want to tell anyone how to do their job but I think it would be a much better structure to layout PS+ free content the first day of the month and then on the weekly updates they could remind people what the freebies are and list any discounts that come along with it. Consistency in a structured service goes a long way, and having a schedule which can manage expectations while still providing a factor of surprise to users would keep users happy. Getting burned for a $2-$5 dollars on a discount is not nearly as bad as getting burned on a $40 game that ends up being free a week later.

    The plan right now is that there’ll be a PS Vita game next week, and one thereafter. So we’ll announce 2 PS vita Games right before December is over. We’re aiming for about 2 PS Vita games per month, and they’ll likely usually drop at the last weeks of the month. This frequency, as outlined above, can change at anytime, but we don’t have any immediate plans to do so.

@382, I have to agree with you. It is a bit ridiculous that you can buy most Sony games from anyone other than Sony for considerably cheaper prices, both new and used. Sony needs to realistically take a look at it’s price structure for their digital downloads and how competitive they are with their brick and mortar, and online counter parts. Paying Sony $49.99 for a game you can purchase elsewhere for $17.99 is a bit absurd. I would be interested in hearing other peoples thoughts on that, as well. Thx

Did he say “match” the content of EU or that we would get exactly what EU got. So far 2 have two disc based games and 2 PSN games, SO the only content they received that we did not is a Vita game, which seems is next week, and another PSN title, which could also come next week. I don’t think they stated Batman and Vanquish are incoming in December, just that we would get games that are roughly equal to theirs disc=disc, psn=psn. I don’t think they had a formula to include age of game and AAA status.

@Major_Hoare

They will publish on Dec 24th and Dec 31st this year because of holidays on Tuesday. So there is 2 weeks of the store update left.

@ MyOpinion

People need to relax on the OhMerGahd Morgan said this weeks game was going to be “The best thing evar”. While I take that he likes to game and finds joy in most of the titles as do I, I don’t think he’s saying “Stop the presses this game of off the hook”.

So far I have liked all the games they have chosen. Would I rather have Rainbow moon or a different title rather then Anomoly, sure, but I’m not ready to grab a pitchfork and torch over it.

A lot of people complaining about not getting free game every week, and now that they do it…they want more…very sad.

@Nazotchi

The trailer for Big Sky also said the same thing. It is a EU trailer as they are getting the game for free not the US. Unless of course they leaked next weeks update, but I doubt it based solely on Big Sky not being US free.

Which is sad, those are two games I would really like to play on Vita, but I will just have to wait and see what next week brings us.

@ Morgan
Just to be clear, I’m not asking specifically for it to be free, just for it to be AVAILABLE to buy on Vita.
There are so many great PSP games that you still can’t get on vita. SW The force unleashed? Crash Bandicoot: Tag Team Racing?? I’m more than willing to pay for them, but for some reason, Sony doesn’t want my money.
Any thoughts?

Will they be fixing the playstation store? The old user interface was so much friendly and the one before that even more so. I basically have to go to other web sites to find out what he full update for the week is. That’s pretty frustrating actually. Maybe there is a setting to view it the old way that I just was not seeing. Any advice you have on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

That’s too bad about Knytt. Oh well, I would have paid for it anyway. It is kind of weird how Europe gets so much more free content than us, though.
