Fuel Overdose on PSN: Giving Combat Racing an Infusion of Strategy

Hi, I’m Skander Djerbi executive producer of the half-Japanese, half-gaijin indie production Fuel Overdose on PSN (demo available now), and today I’m going to explain why and how we brought strategy to our combat racing experience.

When you think of combat racing games of the past 25 years, you realize that they more or less follow the same pattern: you collect an item and then you use it before collecting another one, and so on. These games ask you to focus on speed and targeting but they do not really challenge your mental skills. The only decisions you might have to take from time to time are “Should I use my missile now or later?” or “Should I take that risky shortcut?”

One of the ambitions of Fuel Overdose is to propose a more complex game experience by giving each player the possibility to build his own race strategy and to reward his decision-making skills.

With Fuel Overdose, the choices made before and during the race have a real impact on your chances of success. The game leaves no room for luck and the depth of the game mechanics will constantly challenge your capacity to make the right decisions at the right moments.

The first decisions must be taken before the race: choose your racer after carefully checking his skills, your vehicle and your weaponry to establish a race strategy. Will you try to lead the race from the beginning to the end or stay in ambush and wait for the very last moment before outrunning your opponents? Will you go to battle or bet on your driving skills? Ask yourself these questions, among others, before going further.

But because things don’t always go as planned, you’ll also have to adapt your race strategy and try to turn each duel on the race track to your advantage. Identify your opportunities and weigh the pros and cons of each option before making a move.

Fuel Overdose on PSN

Here’s an example: let’s say there is a vehicle ahead of you, right before the finish line. In most combat racing games you have very few options, and you’ll end up shooting him. Now you are in Fuel Overdose. Should you simply shoot him with your machine gun or launch a rocket? Or maybe unleash a super attack? If so, which one? But are you sure that attacking him is the right move? Don’t forget that hitting him will fill his Berserk gauge, and he might turn against you with a super attack. So maybe it’s wiser to grab him with your grappling hook and try to overtake him. But if you do so, you’d be an easy target for his mines. Another example: how do you intend to use your Berserk gauge? Will you play defense and use it to trigger your shield when you’re being attacked, or will you play offense and unleash as many special attacks as possible?

In the beginning of the game you’ll probably ignore all these questions and rely exclusively on your instincts to play Fuel Overdose like any other combat racer. But as the game becomes more and more challenging, you’ll realize that establishing strategies is the key to success (especially online). Whatever your plan is, keep in mind that each decision has consequences , that even the most obvious choices can be questioned , and that sometimes an opponent can be more useful alive than dead.

  • The Game looks really fun from what I saw in the trailer so when is the game coming out I am very interested hopefully it’s after Christmas so I can have some money to buy it and have a happy holidays :-)

  • The game is nowhere to be found on the EU PS Store so far.

I feel like Tommy Refenes in Indie Game:The Movie right now :)

In the meantime take a look at the reviews on our fb page: http://fr-fr.facebook.com/pages/Fuel-Overdose/137593856277495

  • Looks fun, will definitely be checking out the demo!

I just hope the online multiplayer is stable.

  • i tries the demo soon as the store updated. all i can say is…. GREATTT. i hade a blast with just the demo alone. the speed on the cars is just right. not to fast not thank goddd it wasnt to slow. i hate racing games that feel super sluggish but thankfuly overdose is NOT one of them. if only the full game is already out. that was a short tease. most likely going to buy it even though its 15$. seems like tons of content to justify the price, and thats rare for me. well done.

    • Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it. (and you could get it now on the EU store if you wish)

Also I would like to use this opportunity to share with you and all the members of the US blog what I posted on the European blog

Before jumping on the online modes please please please spend some serious time on the offline modes first. The game features A LOT of new game mechanics and you’ll have to practice before you can master all of them and get familiar with the tracks and camera system. Understanding how the weapons, the combo system, the shield, the berserk gauge, and the special attacks interact between each other is fundamental if you really want to enjoy the game.

    • As I said in the post, despite its arcade approach the game shows its true potential after several hours of practice. In the beginning you’ll play (and enjoy) Fuel Overdose like any other combat racing game. But you’ll have much more fun once you understand that building strategies is the key to success. Yesterday I read a review saying “The game defines the term ‘easy to pick up, hard to master”. That’s exactly what we wanted for the game.
And once you reach a certain level, you’ll enjoy the online modes even more because online is definitely where the tactical aspect of the game really shines.

  • oh and the Females are super sexyyyyy. just hade to put that in there. also sorry for so much mispelling in my post above. im still waking up. smhhh

  • Will you guys make a VITA version of it? i would really like to play this in my VITA/

    • I’m gonna give you the same answer I just gave on the EU blog:

Please please please get the PS3 version, continue requesting a Vita version, and Sony and I might work on it ;)

  • Man, I was tricked again. :P
(demo available now) posted in the US PSN Blog I figured you were saying it’s available now on the US Store.

Hoping to check it out soon.

  • so i can buy the full game from EU store and log back in my US account to play it ? please confirm. thanks

    • You simply have to create another account (so different ID) and mention a European country in the settings. I myself have both european and american accounts.

  • Skander Djerbi thanks, il have to test that out.

  • Definitely going to try this out. You had me at grappling around corners.

Some of you might have tried to purchase the game today from the European Playstation®Store and couldn’t find it after browsing the New games section. I couldn’t find it either. For some reasons that haven’t been explained to me so far, the game is currently not visible on the Playstation®Store. I’m sorry about that but that’s totally beyond my control. I don’t know when the game will end up appearing on the Playstation®Store.

However it seems that you can find the game and download it. 2 options:
1 – Use the search tool
    2 – Use the PC store https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-gb/games/fuel-overdose/cid=EP4349-NPEB00876_00-FUELOVERDOSE0001

Will keep you posted once I have some news

  • Felices Fiestas!

Gracias.

  • This game type has been long past do the game play music, the different enviroments,
and best the battle engine, the multitudes of different manuvers and combos. I cant wait.
Download the demo today. Youve got me hooked. Perfect fun for everyone ,Love the
cool anami characters.Thank you from your Customer Ambassador to the Playstation Network online id: bombbreath Happy Holidays Happy New Year And thanks for something to look forward to in January.2013.

    • @bombbreath > please give me your impressions after cheking the demo
Be careful, despite its arcade approach the game is pretty difficult (as Death Rally was) and when I read some comments on the game I realize that we may have implemented too many new features in the game :). So here are 2 tips:
      1. Stick to one vehicle in the beginning (the one I prefer in the demo is the muscle car, perfect for drifts, but might be difficult to handle for a start) to you can get used to the steering
      2. Purchase 1 or 2 weapons only (I’d say machine gun + mines) so you can easily understand how the shield, combo system and berserk gauge work. And then you’ll see whether it’s better to invest your money in extra ammos, extra weapons or in upgrades
