The Music of Soul Sacrifice: Recorded at Skywalker Sound

If asked, most of us can recall a favorite scene or two from a movie, a shot or sequence that lingered with us long after the lights came on and we left the theater. We retain the visual, but often it isn’t until we see that same scene muted that we discover that the music, the aural accompaniment, was a far greater part of our experience than we realized.

Just as in cinema, music is a huge part of what makes many gaming memories so rich. It’s a significant ingredient in creating a sense of grandeur and making something feel epic.

Soul Sacrifice, the next title from legendary developer Keiji Inafune, has such aspirations.

It may be a handheld action title, but there is nothing portable or small about the game’s scope or presentation. Case in point: the game’s soundtrack is composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Wataru Hokoyama, two of the most recognized composers in the industry. Moreover, their soaring, charged score was recorded using full orchestras and choruses on the Scoring Stage at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, CA, a world-renowned studio with some of the best acoustic technology and audio engineers in the world.

Soul Sacrifice’s satisfying action and adventure may conveniently fit in the palms of your hands, but expect its sights and sounds to feel much bigger!

Watch the music of Soul Sacrifice come to life in this special abridged cut of our “Behind the Scenes” video at the top of this post. There’s much more news to come regarding the music of Soul Sacrifice, not to mention the game itself, so please stay tuned!

  • One moment for me was the Aeris death scene. The music really helped

  • Definitely my most anticipated game for the VITA. Hope they set a firm release date for NA.

  • Will our Vita music be disabled while we’re in-game?

  • Full orchestration! Impressive.
    Release date please.

    • thrillwell,

Please note: that is the official release date for Japan, but that there is as of yet no officially announced/confirmed release date for North America. Stay tuned!

  • Sounds and looks great! So can we assume the soundtrack will be available for purchase? Or perhaps included with a special edition like Ragnarok Odyssey offered?

Most anticipated Vita game, well tied with Killzone :)

    • spaceboy21,

There is no information regarding the separate availability of the soundtrack in North America at this time.

Glad to hear the title is on your wishlist!

  • The soundtrack can make and certainly break a cinematic experience. So, wow, Skywalker Sound? This shows that Sony is really supporting this game and expects great sales. I was going to wait and see on this game because it sounded a little too creepy violent for me, but the hype is starting to work on me, so good job, Aram.

  • Good headphones are a MUST for the PS Vita.
You won’t be able to enjoy this soundtrack with the built-in speakers.

  • Please, Please ,Please
Bring the Limited edition Vita Bundle to US
    that Red/Black Vita Looks Gorgeous.
    import is too expensive
    i don’t mind pay 350$ to 400$
But Please give it a chance in the US.

  • Japan Studio… you’re the guys that helped From Soft with Demon’s Souls…

Please… talk to them about doing a Souls game (or even Demon’s Souls 2) for the PS Vita. I assure that game could be a console-seller, and considering Dark Souls II has been announced and it’s probably going to be launched at the end of 2013, a lot of audience will be paying attention to a portable Souls game.

  • omg, Yasunori Mitsuda, the guy behind Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross soundtracks, I’m sold!

  • Sounds like generic fantasy music to me. But then again, i’ve never cared much for videogame music since i usually play them muted while listening to podcasts. Unless it has a compelling story, which is sadly rare in japanese games these days.

  • @ Ryumoau

And here we go again, don’t you get tired of the same ….. ?
What’s wrong with you, really ?! You can find the bad about X thing ( even if there’s not ) but can never find the good thing about that same X thing ?

    Want to do something good?
    – stay away from the blog you’ll do a favor to countless of people, believe me!

  • Very cool.. hoping that more PS Vita games get marketing support and that they begin to do well in North America.

  • Aram Jabbari is notorious for his great taste in music, film and games. He is truly at his best however when applying that Persona 4 Golden sticker to the face of the Vita. That was a hilarious little promotional vid.

Needless to say I’m super excited for Soul Sacrifice. Every bit of news just shows how much love went into this game and all of the attention paid to quality. The pedigree of people involved with this game are second to none, you are fooling yourself if you don’t believe this game will be anything but exceptional.

Everyone, do yourselves a favor and look forward to this, it is a classic in the making.

Thanks for sharing this with everyone Aram, I think you might be the first PR guy to actually have a small fan base, hah!

    • Yourfacedotcom,

You’re too kind (and likely overstate the matter). Now excuse me while I try to fit my newly oversized ego back into my chassis.

  • THAT’S why I bought a PS Vita! Can’t wait to play it!

  • I want to play. Like NOW!! ♥♥♥

March, 2013 is the target Japan release date.
There has not been a set release date for the U.S.

  • Addition: U.S. vendors such as Gamestop list dates, that other information sources use as standard, even though those vendor dates are just placeholders.

It is to my understanding that the date is still TBA. Hence the request for an announcement.

  • Will we get the demo?

  • Sounds fantastic. I’m not into games of this type, but a lot of people are really excited for it. Hopefully Sony can pull it of with the Marketing and all will be well.

  • This and Sly Cooper are the next Vita games I will consume.

  • I really hope it sells well, It seems that the Soul Sacrifice team is giving it all they got. Can’t wait to get it!
