December 31st PlayStation Plus Update

NBA JAM On Fire Edition (PS3)

Free for Plus members

You don’t have to be a basketball nut to have a blast with this one. If you’ve played NBA JAM before, you know it’s all about fast-paced arcade-style basketball action. Of course it features all your favorite NBA players and legends, but with all the fun and irreverence that has hooked countless gamers and tons of trash-talking multiplayer sessions. Crazy modes, secret teams, and rock-solid online play make this a great addition to your collection. Take a look at the video above to check out a match up in the game in the classic ‘big head’ mode, and play it yourself to see why IGN.com gave it a 9 out 10.

Chronovolt (PS Vita)

Free for Plus members

Chronovolt is a puzzle-platformer with steampunk influences where players control the Chronosphere, a discovery that contains the energy that powers time. You’ll guide it through levels using all of the PS Vita’s controls including tilt, the analog sticks, and rear-touch to have a completely unique experience. Not to mention that by collecting power-ups known as Chronovolts, players are able to manipulate time, such as rewinding the game to save yourself from a fall that would have otherwise resulted in death. Set in three distinct worlds including a lush Mayan world, a snow-covered Chinese landscape, and a futuristic setting; PS Vita gamers will find plenty to love with Chronovolt.

I think the only reports I had seen on that were for the retail edition for NBA Jam, not NBA Jam On Fire edition; however, I’ll look into this further.

NBA Jam is a great title. I was expecting it to go free once NFL Blitz went free. Shame I’ve had it on the XBOX since release. I don’t know anything about Chronovolt but I’m happy for anything on the Vita. I haven’t checked but is it related to Cuboid? Looks sort of like a steampunk version of that from the screenshot. Cool.

What a crappy New Years gift. EU got Arkham City, we get a game nobody cares about. Good job SCEA I won’t be renewing!

Another great PS+ update!! Oh.. not really.

Nice move giving us a name that’s being taken offline on the next couple weeks, I seriously don’t know why SCEA hates us so much.

Didnt expect much for the Vita game. But I thought something substantial would be replacing Bioshock 2.

I assume Vita won’t get any retail games until Uncharted or Gravity Rush is taken down?

NBA Jam is good. Chronovolt has got nothing but TERRIBLE impressions from everyone I know in EU region, so I don’t know why you think we’d like that.

LOOL, i was already disappointed when the store exploit was discovered.. anyway…. it sucks…. chronovolt is such a bad game. played a little on my EU account and gave up. was expecting something better.. but i know i wont after so many weeks of disappointing… for ps plus users like me who owns only a vita and no ps3… having a US account at this moment really is not worth…. anyway…..

+ j-scro on December 31st, 2012 at 9:11 am said:

I haven’t played Chronovolt but it’s never a good sign when the first Google link that pops up when searching for reviews features the words “buggy”and “ünpolished.” Still, I’ll give it a whirl.

+ castonph on December 31st, 2012 at 9:11 am said:

Hope you all had a merry Christmas, wishing everyone a happy new year, even you Morgan! Thanks for the update, don’t think I’ll bother with NBA Jam but Chronovolt looks interesting. Still backlogged with Rochard and Anomaly, had a BLAST playing Journey all the way through. No buys for me this time around, though Assassin’s Creed is starting to look like something I’ll get into.

+ Tw1zTiD-MaFiA21 on December 31st, 2012 at 9:11 am said:

For the past 3 weeks the poll winner has been “Nothing for me this week” but yet every week US gets games that nobody wants. Who has to get fired so we can get some decent “rented games?” Glad I got my 1yr ps+ for free lol.

22

+ SpiteU on December 31st, 2012 at 9:12 am said:

Anytime I get a free game on my vita I’m happy, seeing Arkham City so cheap means I at last have a digital copy.

No complaints. I understand capitalism.

23

+ N7Recon on December 31st, 2012 at 9:12 am said:

I have been waiting for Chronovolt to drop on US Plus since the devs mentioned they were working on that. Happy to see it available so soon.

I know a lot of people are upset with NA Plus, but I cannot complain. A lot of great games were included in 2012 and none of them were games I owned. Came close a few times (Rochard, SSFIV:AE, RE5:Gold), but the year will close with the perfect run intact!

Hopefully you folks can bolster the discounts in 2013 (Unfinished Swan? EU had a TUS+Journey bundle…).

All in all thanks for the great 2012, and I’m looking forward to what Plus has to offer in 2013.
Have a Happy (and safe) New Year!

+ Ryumoau on December 31st, 2012 at 9:13 am said:

NBA Jam? is this another NFL Blitz again? that was a boring sports game. I’m not too excited for Chronovolt either, since it currently has a 40 on Metacritic. Its apparently very buggy.

Good to see Sony cares about offering quality games to us. :/

@17 Sad but so. I thought of renewing when my ps+ expires in January but the games we are getting free are starting to get worse each time. If Sony makes Sound Shapes,Journey, or Tokyo Jungle free anywhere in January, I will definitely subscribe again.

I actually love NBA JAM and will play the heck out of it but to offer it free two weeks before the servers are taken offline is pretty brutal. I would hope the PLUS team had no knowledge of this when they were able to solidify it as an IGC game.

@1 ^ I totally agree. This is becoming really bad. Next they will be giving us strangle hold or something else really old that we could pick up for $3 and GameStop. And saying its free so deal. But it’s not free we already paid for it. Come on SOA pick it up otherwise this will be the last time I will be paying for this crap.

Can’t wait to play NBA Jam. I loved the retail release, and apparently the downloadable version is even better. Thanks, PSPlus. Keep up the awesome work – despite what idiots and haters say, you’ve done wonderfully with the free games the last few months. Can’t wait to see what’s happening in January!

Also, if I hear one more person complain about us not getting Mortal Kombat after doing nothing but complaining about how Plus keeps getting fighting games, I’m going to scream.

38

+ Zifiden on December 31st, 2012 at 9:17 am said:

Yeah I have to admit. I am weighing the cost of purchasing the games that I do play from my plus subscription versus actually renewing my sub. The last couple of months have been way below par on what I expect.. I don’t expect great releases that are right up my preference alley.. but for the last couple months there hasn’t been one single title that I have really enjoyed immensely. I mean hell I still play games that I have kept on my console since I became a plus member and yet I have deleted or never bothered to download 3/4 of the content in the last 6 months because its old crap that I didn’t want in the first place. Very disappointing. I have to admit that I doubt I will be re-subscribing to + unless it begins to get better over the final 2 months of my current sub.

I’m not even going to get into what EU gets for plus and sales like 50 % off NFSMW and Farcry 3. It’s really starting to get me mad. Kind of taking it personal when I really shouldn’t.. Lol
