New Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Gameplay Video, Treasure Design Contest Winners

Happy New Year from the Sly gang! 2012 was full of fantastic gaming goodness. Hopefully you’ve found some favorites (I know I have – Persona 4 Golden, anyone?) that you’re still playing, but we’re sure you’re already looking ahead to what’s landing in 2013.

By the looks of it, 2013 is looking just as good with the upcoming release of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time! Sly and the gang are back on February 5th for $39.99 on PlayStation 3 and $29.99 on PS Vita. If you buy the PS3 copy, you’ll receive the digital PS Vita version from PSN at no additional cost.

Today we’re here to give you a taste of some of the new gameplay you’ll get to experience. In case you missed it, we had an IGN Live session right before the holidays, with Glen Egan and Mat Kraemer from Sanzaru Games showing off the first few hours of the game. In that preview you got a glimpse of some of the gameplay mechanics, Sly’s samurai costume, his Japanese ancestor Rioichi Cooper, and a look at one of the vibrant lush environments Sly will be visiting as he travels through time. In this new gameplay video below, you’ll get to see how the team works together to pull a heist on El Jefe, the epic boss you’ll meet during your travels to Feudal Japan.

This is just a slice of how the game is going to break down but there will be plenty to do aside from that, including earning all of the costumes — which you’ll be able to replay the game with to find new collectables and hidden treasures. Speaking of collectables, we’d like to take a minute to announce the winners of our Sly Cooper Treasure Design Contest! It’s been quite a while, but we finally got a hold of the winners and are happy to reveal the two winning designs. Both the items below and their descriptions will be included as collectable treasures in Thieves in Time:

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - Cane Polish

–By Case M.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - Cookie Jar

–By Jaime P.

We had tons of entries and the team had a tough time choosing these winners, but we want to make sure everyone got to see their designs! Big congrats as well to our runner-up winners, who were also notified. We hope you’ve been enjoying the fantastic prizes!

Bet you can’t wait to start playing, right? Well good news — we’ll be releasing a new downloadable demo, so you can get some hands-on time with Sly before the game hits store shelves. Starting January 22nd, the new demo will be available exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Then, on January 29th, it will be available publicly to all PSN users. For those of who got early access to the first Sly demo from the Ratchet & Clank Collection, this demo is brand new — so be sure to check this one out as well! Stay tuned for lots more on Sly as we head toward launch, and don’t forget to pre-order your copy today.

  • Nice price point…$39.99 with cross buy ….definitely will pick this up. Didn’t play the previous ones, looking forward to this one.

  • Wow. $39.99? I’m surprised! That’s a great price!

Also, sucks that I didn’t win (of course I wasn’t going to) but I like the relics. Also, loving the Daxter relic there too. ;)

I can’t wait for this game! C’mon February!

  • $39.99 both versions? oh my god, 2 copies sold!!!!! anyways where is our psvita demo?

  • Yo my threads on the ign Vesti get to two pages like it’s nothing.
Are there two trophy lists, aka two platinums?

Do they unlock for each system on one playthrough?

    pls respond.

  • 40 bucks?! YES! I’ll be pre-ordering next week since I could totally afford this now. Good price to set the game at since it’s not getting much attention. I just hope it sells enough copies to be a profit. Can’t wait to try it out on the Vita also. I’m excited for that demo on the 22nd!

  • Thieves in Time looks good, Now with that price for two copies, it sure makes it marvelous!
Sly Cooper series are so fun to play. Good job to the Team at Sanzaru Games.

  • Very good. I’m hoping the game for a long time. And it is very good to know that I can have both to version PSVita + PS3 for a single price. Thanks Sony.

  • Platted/loved first 3–so psyched!

    Couple of questions:

    A) Is the PS3 and Vita versions 2 separate Platinums?

    B) Since you can use the Vita somewhat (to find treasures), does this mean Sly 4 uses Cross Controller capability–like I can use my Vita as a complete replacement for a DualShock?

  • Can you say about how much memory card space the Vita version will require?

  • woah! 39.99! Is that so? Awesome!

  • can we pre order the game on psn? and is the demo coming out on the 22nd a vita one or just for the ps3?

  • @Cristian Cardona
Question. Is it $40 only on PSN or will it be $40 in stores too?

  • What is the reason for the pricecut? Great news!

  • Why is it now only $40? I’m super happy about it, but is the price drop because of the length of the game or is it to get as many new Sly fans as possible?

  • My God a demo…can’t wait for January 22nd….I’m so excited I can’t wait to have this game on my hands…and damn $40.00 is too cheap…even more considering that we get the Vita version together….Thieves in Time is one of my most anticipated games of 2013….I’m really counting on Sanzaru in this one….Sly is one of the best video game series ever created.

  • I’m just waiting for them to come back and correct the price. :/

    Hopefully it stays $39.99.

  • Sweet! I have Sly PS3 reserved but with this pricing I might buy a Vita copy too since we have 3 Vitas in our house and can only do the free Vita copy on 1 or 2 of the 3 Vitas due to account limits. Now I can get both PS3 and Vita versions for $70. Thanks!

  • @4
    @8

    only 1 platinum

  • This $40 price tag for the game makes me nervous. $50 is seen as a budget title, and $40 is usually reserved for re-released HD collections. Is this game going to have the same depth and polish as the Sucker Punch titles?

It may turn out being great, Wipeout HD/Fury could have easily gone as two separate full-price retail games without me feeling ripped off, but all I’m saying is that the deeply discounted price on Thieves in Time does not exude confidence in the finished product.

    • That’s not always the case. The real question is, do you want to have an awesome game for $40, or have an awesome game for $60? We’ll take the extra 20 if you want to give it to us =)

  • @Remmulak

Do yourself a favor, and buy the Sly Collection. The originals were made by Sucker Punch, the guys behind inFamous 1 and 2. They are great, and the humor and gameplay are incredible. If you like stealth gameplay, you’ll like them.

  • I am very excited for this game, and the $39.99 price point is a great bonus! Good work Sanzaru, and thanks for the great news!

  • no special edition ? :(

  • @iZalman007 @pscoolman @G-Force08 @TubaDude49

The reason it’s $40 is because it likely won’t sell well due to the game not getting much attention and the fact that Sly Cooper doesn’t have that big of a fan base. So lowering the price will get more people to buy the game. People will probably buy it new instead of used also since it’s launching at such a low price.

  • @ anti-altair16
Right on the dot dude. To everyone out there over-thinking the game will suck or have poor graphics only because it will cost $39.99 +Tax, shame on you. Sly and the gang are an especial piece to the PlayStation franchise since it debuted on PS2. The games are humorous and addictive.

  • it is nice for the ps3 version of the game is only 40 bucks, but it is too bad that my treasure didn’t made it into the game. this game will be the one of the greatest game of 2013. Good job sanzaru and i will get the new demo on jan 29.

  • Will this be available on PSN day one?

  • Awesome price point! Can’t wait to play!

  • Daxter easter egg = WIN!!!, Sanzaru please make a Jak and Daxter game

  • Sold!

  • Having cross-buy just makes this perfect. I’m so excited!

  • Thanks for the new video!

Is there any chance of getting an unlockable “classic” Sly skin (PS2-era look)? I’m sure I’ll get used to the new Sly look, but I’d love a PS2-era skin.

  • Carmelita!!!!!

  • Boy announcing the winners took you guys forever…I think a lot of people don’t care anymore. And to be honest, those winning designs are IMO quite underwhelming. Two boring looking bottles? I thought this was a ‘design’ contest? Cane polish and a cookie jar don’t strike me as very creative. I have to think you must have passed on some truly great entries that people sent in. The EU version of this contest awarded prizes to Oh well, thanks anyways for running the comp.

The winners of the EU Sly Cooper contest had much more interesting treasures (Egyptian Vase, Spyglass):

I guess it’s not just Plus that has discrepencies.

    • Bottom line is that it worked for us and the team and we’re happy with the choices. The thing with ‘design’ is that, like art, it’s largely a matter of opinion and preference.

These designs *and* descriptions were our favorites and in the end, that’s all that mattered.

  • >$39.99 on PlayStation 3

Well played, Sony. Now I think I can get this game closer to its release date, which is great for me and my wallet. At $60 I would have had to wait a few months for a price drop.

You see? Not every single game has to be $60. Since you guys are trying to target the family/casual crowd a bit more in the coming years, keep that in mind because people LOVE IT when games aren’t $60. That price point brings negative connotations.

Anyways, February is going to be awesome. I actually hope Luigi’s Mansion doesn’t come out in the same month so I can fully enjoy Sly 4.

  • THAT’S AN INSANE PRICE. Seriously. I can’t believe it.

NOW. Is that demo going to be on Vita as well!?

  • Okay, too many awesome things just happened.

$39.99 price point? The fact that they haven’t corrected it yet leads me to believe it’s not a mistake.

    A brand-new demo on the 22nd.

DAXTER is a collectible treasure! Way to tease Sanzaru, I really hope you are working on Jak 4. My mind would be blown. I think you would be the only other developer than Naughty Dog that I would trust Jak and Daxter with.

This game looks awesome, extremely hyped for February 5th!

  • Will the demo be for PS3, Vita, or both?

  • only $40 and cross buy? Awesome! Thats how you sell a game appropriately. :)

  • Only $39.99 probably means it doesn’t have that much content to cost $59.99. At least tehy are being honest unlike other people. :P

    • Nope. That’s your assumption – truth is, there’s PLENTY PLENTY. Price doesn’t always equal quality or content.

  • Is it true that the game releases in March 27th for the UK?

  • I’ve never played a Sly Cooper game before but I am looking forward to picking this up for my PS Vita.

  • $40 for both? sold for sure. is the crossbuy deal available for both physical disc and digital versions for PS3, or just when bought via PS Store? or is it just a voucher inside the case for physical copies only?

    • Cross-buy works for both digital and physical copies of the PS3 version of the game. JimmyHack below explained how the physical redemption works, on digital versions you’ll get the entitlement for both games on the Store.

    • Kristine. Droppin’ knowledge.

  • Is this price correct? None of the retailers I checked have that price point.

  • So how were those two selected winners (with no names mind you, like were given on the UK winners) and the runners up (also with no names given) able to list more than 250 characters? I was only able to input 250 characters, instead of words…..Just feel like this whole contest got screwed up, and rather than coming clean about it, shady stuff went down, and Yes, I feel raw about it. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth about making the game purchase now too.

    • They submitted their idea and it fit the rules (character limits).
The team went ahead and fleshed it out to make it work for them. Hence, the longer copy.

  • I was not expecting that price as most $40-on-release games are either HD Collections or Bundles, so I’m glad to hear!

Can’t wait to pick it up in February.

  • And I thought I was getting a deal preordering it for $44.99 back during Futureshop’s E3 sale.

  • Will this also be available as a Day 1 download?

  • I was going to buy it at $60. So this price point is definitely welcomed

  • @43 Crossbuy games on retail disc, the disc has a section you launch from the XMB called disc benefits.. this will launch from the disc to allow you do download the vita digital from store.. Think of cross buy ps3 disc as the gateway to vita version, its not a redeem code etc.
