New Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Gameplay Video, Treasure Design Contest Winners

Happy New Year from the Sly gang! 2012 was full of fantastic gaming goodness. Hopefully you’ve found some favorites (I know I have – Persona 4 Golden, anyone?) that you’re still playing, but we’re sure you’re already looking ahead to what’s landing in 2013.

By the looks of it, 2013 is looking just as good with the upcoming release of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time! Sly and the gang are back on February 5th for $39.99 on PlayStation 3 and $29.99 on PS Vita. If you buy the PS3 copy, you’ll receive the digital PS Vita version from PSN at no additional cost.

Today we’re here to give you a taste of some of the new gameplay you’ll get to experience. In case you missed it, we had an IGN Live session right before the holidays, with Glen Egan and Mat Kraemer from Sanzaru Games showing off the first few hours of the game. In that preview you got a glimpse of some of the gameplay mechanics, Sly’s samurai costume, his Japanese ancestor Rioichi Cooper, and a look at one of the vibrant lush environments Sly will be visiting as he travels through time. In this new gameplay video below, you’ll get to see how the team works together to pull a heist on El Jefe, the epic boss you’ll meet during your travels to Feudal Japan.

This is just a slice of how the game is going to break down but there will be plenty to do aside from that, including earning all of the costumes — which you’ll be able to replay the game with to find new collectables and hidden treasures. Speaking of collectables, we’d like to take a minute to announce the winners of our Sly Cooper Treasure Design Contest! It’s been quite a while, but we finally got a hold of the winners and are happy to reveal the two winning designs. Both the items below and their descriptions will be included as collectable treasures in Thieves in Time:

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - Cane Polish

–By Case M.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - Cookie Jar

–By Jaime P.

We had tons of entries and the team had a tough time choosing these winners, but we want to make sure everyone got to see their designs! Big congrats as well to our runner-up winners, who were also notified. We hope you’ve been enjoying the fantastic prizes!

Bet you can’t wait to start playing, right? Well good news — we’ll be releasing a new downloadable demo, so you can get some hands-on time with Sly before the game hits store shelves. Starting January 22nd, the new demo will be available exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Then, on January 29th, it will be available publicly to all PSN users. For those of who got early access to the first Sly demo from the Ratchet & Clank Collection, this demo is brand new — so be sure to check this one out as well! Stay tuned for lots more on Sly as we head toward launch, and don’t forget to pre-order your copy today.

Thanks for the answer regarding physical disc copies. still doesn’t answer if its physical or digital only though. I want to do the crossbuy digitally, but if its physical only, I would like to know prior to purchase.

  • I love all the chunky modelled details in the environments and how animated so many things are in the outside Japanese hub environment. I love it when you can see the breeze. :)

  • Murray in geisha garb? Can’t unsee that. But awesome looking game none the less. I am going to really have to start putting aside game money for this year

  • I knew about the crossbuy deal, but it’s also going to be sold for $40 bucks? Awesome! Feb can’t come soon enough.

  • @41 Go get The Sly Collection so you can catch up.

  • Dead Space 3 demo gets an early release for 360 starting Jan 15th, provided you signed up for a limited access code. The demo later gets released to all for 360 & PS3 starting Jan 22nd.

    Details: https://demo.deadspace.com/index_faq.php

  • @50 sorry, buy the PS3 version digital or physical. Both have crossbuy. Remember to buy PS3 version though. You buy vita version you only get vita.. Crossbuy only works one way.

As far as trophy list question someone else had. It shares 1 list between the PS3 and Vita games so no double trophies.

  • @33

Now, you’re just trying to hard.

  • Look at the bottom of the treasure pictures. Last row treasure in the middle. DAXTER!!! Sanzaru maybe working on the next Jak & Daxter.

P.S. is the prices PSN only or retail, too?

  • Is there a reason why it’s releasing very long from the US release date?

  • $39.99? I don’t want to sound negative but does that mean there isn’t much confidence in its sales? Or does it mean it’s not really the full game they wanted it to be? Either way I’ll still be getting it, just need to beat Sly 2 and 3 first!

    • It’s a competitive market right now! We want to make sure this is a purchase you don’t have to think twice about. It’s gonna be a great game and we want to make sure as many people as possible can enjoy it =)

  • For real? I might have to buy 2 copy’s at that price

  • Any word on the size of the vita version?

  • Sweet, finally a date for the demo and those treasures just looked amazing! I’m getting more excited about this game every minute! :)

  • @62 EU vita versions is approx 3.2 gigs.

  • 39,99$ ? Oh God awesome…. i was rly expecting 60 godamit now i dont need to choose about sly or GTA V :D
    I can buy both =P
Anyway Sly was always my prioriy and this game everytime its shown gives us surprises.
Any date for the Demo ? i hope they dont plan to launch it on the same day as the full game lol

  • @65, read the post again, it gives demo dates

  • The demo is downloadable 22nd january for playstation plus members, and 29th january for everyone else. Is this only in the american psn? Can i get it on my European psn account?

  • I’m Sold, day one buy for me.

  • Oh MY God! $40?? i was going to buy it day 1 no matter what anyways.. cant wait for this game to play on both PS3 and Vita

  • just wanted to chime in & say thanks Sony … really appreciate the price drop. the demo is fantastic – got it w/ R & C collection …. it has been replayed multiple times … I see this as Sony really wanting to provide consumers with a quality title at a fantastic Day 1 price …. it will encourage anyone on the fence to jump in Day 1 … as is so often the case, Day 1 purchasers & loyal fans sort of get dinged – I had LBP Karting & PS All Stars preordered & paid full fare Day 1 … then within 3 weeks, both titles had sales seeing a 50% price drop …. so this is a way to prevent that & I am thrilled …. this game looks & plays beautifully … anyone out there who has missed out, buy the Sly collection – 3 games, full HD & good value … well worth a purchase. counting the days till my preorder is available !

  • How big is the Vita version, roughly?

  • Yes perfect price for a awesome game like Sly Cooper 4 Thieves in Time and also wondering if Sony going to put a demo of Sly 4 on playstation store this month?

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH. DAY 1 CROSSBUY.

About how many hours is this game?

  • awww, sad face. when will the names be announced? also to anyone who finds these items weren’t good or creative. I think they are. The cane cleaner is pretty neat, plus its not just another pricey item with jewels and magic all over it, its something that the cooper clan could have used over the years. something every cooper used is pretty epic if you ask me :D. and as for the cookie jar its the first item sly ever stole if you read the comics. idk, to me both these items are rather nice to see that sly isnt only interested in gold and money but enjoys the little things in life :3 Anyway, thanks for the contest, it was fun and amazing^^ and even if it took forever to find out who won I’m still glad to have finally got to see it announced!

    • Yeah….took us a bit unfortunately. We’ll be fixing the post in a bit to show the names!
      Thanks for your patience =)

  • The game looks great and at a reasonable price… really no reason not to get the PS3 copy. Will we be able to preorder it on the PS Store before it releases?

  • $40?? Omg if you guys don’t buy this, you deserve to be kicked in the nuts! :D

  • Thank you so much for all of these news, Cristian! You’re always keeping us on top of the latest Sly 4 happenings. :D Very happy to see a $20 price drop, as if I wasn’t buying it on day one anyway xD Can’t wait to play that demo on the 29th!

  • Just remembered to ask. How large will the PS Vita version be? I gotta make sure I have room. :P

  • This is too cheap, let me give money to sucker punch. They want my money!

  • No double trophy is a bit of a bummer though and how big will the game be? PS Vita bundles should pack in far bigger memory cards if the PS Vita copy will always be downloadable and if you want PS Plus to do well. I have a 32GB that is almost all filled up…. hoping a 64GB version comes out soon.

  • Hopefully at $40 it will fly of the shelves, justifying the release of further installments and more games like it. I was perfectly content paying $60 for my most anticipated game of the year.

It is a bit confounding since the game seems to have a lot of content, and everything I’ve seen has been nothing short of stellar. As seen here, there are negative implications on launching at a lower price point. I’m confident it’s not a testament to the quality of the game, but rather to the fact that selling a cartoony action platformer isn’t the most sane choice these days.

  • Only 39.99 AND with Cross Buy? Wow you guys at Sanzaru are the best! I would’ve bought it even if it was $60 because you guys are making a great game while staying faithful to the series. You guys without a doubt will have a buy from me.

  • $39.99? Unified trophy list? Cross buy?

This is absolute perfection. Not to mention how amazing the game itself looks. Needless to say this has become a day one purchase.

  • Also, to clarify, I am actually thrilled that more games are adopting unified trophy lists across PS3/Vita. As a pretty avid trophy hunter (3200 trophies) I feel like it’s cheating when I get free platinums, so I refuse to play motorstorm RC or sound shapes on PS3. I’m glad this is becoming a trend.

  • at 82 yea we need more games like Ratchet and clank, Jack and Daxter and Sly Cooper, all of them are awesome!!!!

  • What were the runner-up treasures?

  • Day 1 for sure!

  • I am very excite.

  • Excellent decision on the price!

  • Yeah more games coming out for PS VIta keep them coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Vice solution. I’m sure you’ll make huge benefits from this deal. Especially when it comes to price and the copies sold. Can’t wait for this game!

  • a price cut before release? either sony smartened up and realized that their games don’t sell or sly 4 is a dud.

  • what’s the file size for the Vita version?

now that it is 30 for it everywhere I will buy it off the PSN so I can always have it on me.

  • Given the combined trophy list, I will probably just buy the Vita version. I play it more than anything else.

  • There are a lot of title I want to save up to, but this deal made me reconsider.

  • @53 One of the missions in game, according to the previews of it..

@85 One trophy list that’s shared.

  • Are the controls all the same? Is the HUD the same (Health bar and powerup bar)? Is there still a “Thiefnet” to purchase powerups from? And lastly, if you’re at liberty to reveal, what characters are we going to see? Will there still be Guru, Penelope, Panda King, and Dimitri?

I’m very excited for this game. I was a little upset when I heard Sucker Punch was dropping it, but I’m interested to see where Sanzaru goes with the Sly series.

    Thank you.

  • $40 means I’ll be buying on launch day. Which will be my second time ever buying a game without waiting for a price drop. $60 is just too steep. My most anticipated release of the year is one step closer…
