God of War: Ascension Multiplayer Beta

Friends of PlayStation.Blog,

You’ve likely read or seen the many posts over the past month regarding the God of War: Ascension Multiplayer Beta. At first it was available only to participants of the “Rise of the Warrior” experience on the God of War website (which is now relaunched, new and improved, and ready to dole out even more extras for series fans). Then it was only accessible to PlayStation Plus members (as if they needed any more exclusive content, what with their free Instant Game Collection and countless discounts).

Now, we’re excited to announce that we’re opening up the Ascension MP Beta to all PlayStation Network users for a very limited time. Starting now and lasting through the holiday weekend—provided you’ve got a PlayStation 3 and a valid North American PlayStation Network account—you’re in!

Think of it as a sampling—nay, a slice—of the benefits and rewards showered upon PlayStation Plus members month after month. Wish you could have played the Beta for longer than a few days? Wish you could get more first looks and early access opportunities for amazing PlayStation content? Join PlayStation Plus!

As we said, we’re going to sneak you in to check out the PlayStation Plus God of War: Ascension Multiplayer Beta. Simply redeem the universal voucher below and join the action!

F2TA – HMNB – 762G

We want to get as many people as possible into the MP Beta, not only to really give those servers a good beating (it’s nothing personal; they just have that kind of face you want to punch/stress load), but also because we want everyone to discover the exciting, frantic multiplayer experience that gamers are raving about. So please, spread the word (and the code) and let’s see how many people we can thrust into the frenzy!

As we’ve shared before, here’s what you can expect when you jump—nay, LEAP—into the fray:

God Allegiances

  • Zeus and Ares (2 of 4)

Modes

  • 8-player – Team Favor of the Gods or Capture The Flag
  • 4-player – Free For All
  • Favor of the Gods (Deathmatch)

Maps

  • Desert of Lost Souls (large map) & Forum of Hercules (arena)
  • Vast amount of weapons, armors, magic, relics, and God items to customize and earn
  • Level 30 cap
  • VoIP (bust out those headphones and mics; team strategies are crucial, especially in CTF)

Here’s the wealth of additional content not in the Beta that will be in the final game March 12th:

  • God Allegiances – Hades and Poseidon
  • A third, to-be-determined In-Game Weapon Class
  • More Large and Small maps created from signature God of War locations
  • The ability to customize your Warrior as you unlock all the weapons, magics, armors, relics, and God items from the four allegiances — and level them up!
  • An unannounced fourth multiplayer mode

Need help achieving godly multiplayer skills? Check out the Book of Divine Wisdom, a multiplayer strategy booklet created in partnership with the fine folks at Penny Arcade. Want to learn even more about the Beta? Click here.

See you online!

Also I don’t mind multiplayer trophies if they are done RIGHT.

A great example would be Uncharted 2. All you needed to do was play one match of competitive multiplayer, and one co-op match, and bingo, trophies unlocked.

It would be interesting to see them do a play one match, level up your character once, and maybe kill an opponent online? I would rather have those I just listed than these trophies: Reach the level cap, unlocked all items, play on every map. Those types of trophies although helpful to try and get trophy hunters to play the multiplayer, isn’t wise though, I know a lot of friends who would drop this game from a possible purchase because of tedious multiplayer trophies.

I was really worried about how you guys announced the multiplayer in God of war. It didn’t seem like a good idea. I would love a Co-op campaign and I hope you guys did not rush the story mode in this game I loved God of War 3, and the other games, just please don’t focus all attention on the multiplayer thanks!

Well for people getting jumped getting killed by two or three people in team deathmatch need better teammates to help you, follow them around or stick together like the 3 people that jump you are doing. Anyway I can take out two people on me just got to learn to block and evade, cant just recklessly attack all 3 of them and expect to win. I really enjoy capture the flag, and I can’t wait to buy this game and enjoy both the single and the multiplayer.

I never in a million years thought that this multiplayer would work, but SSM, you guys have changed a skeptic to a believer. When I first heard that multiplayer was going to be in GoW,

I was annoyed because multiplayer nowadays seems like its added solely to make more money via DLC and for the bullet-point on the back of the game box. I downloaded the beta yesterday via the universal code, and I was thoroughly impressed with how fluid the gameplay was, and just how much fun it could be kicking ass online with the GoW gameplay.

There are some balancing issues that should be worked on, because low level players will have no chance against higher level players because of the unlocked weapons and armor etc. The lag at times also makes the game unplayable because none of my attacks register and it seems like the other players attacks never miss. Other than that though IMO, this multiplayer is a lot of fun and a very welcomed addition to the GoW franchise.

Alright I been playing this since yesterday, LOTS of fun, I never though this would be fun to play with, but a few mechanics need to be modify at the the very least. Here a few suggestion that should be made in my opinion: ( I only play FFA because its so chaotic :p )

1. When you block ( L1 ) its need to be fix because u can be blocking the entire and you can still use the evade button ( R3 ) when your opponent is about to use a Heavy Attack to break through. To fix this in my opinion, while your are blocking, you can’t use the evade button. Every time I encounter someone I go for the block and depends what attack he uses on me I keep blocking ( and parry ) or dodge it ( if its a heavy attack ) and every time I happen to be winning my fights.

2. Pick up weapons are awesome but they need to fix it has well. Every time I get the two mini swords ( forgot the name in GoW xD ) in FFA I destroy everyone with barely no efforts what so ever. A guy use it on me, I couldn’t find a way to fight back, I even try to evade but the range of that is ridiculous. Try to block nop its unless….. While you have that u are pretty much invisible. IDK is there a way to defeat people with pick up weapons. There should be a option that if you get cut off guard ( since pick up weapons are indeed deadly ) you should be able to either ( break it or steal from them while they have it in their hands ). I was so piss last match when the dude pick this up and in full health I was defeated in 7-14 seconds without me even be able to touch him >_<

3. Add a option to invite your friends to make parties, playing with friends would had been more fun :3 . I pretty sure something like this will be added to the final product :p

+ XPhoenixJonanX on January 20th, 2013 at 1:26 pm said:

4. Add more weapons like spear, bow, axe weapons etc. You can make option like wielding two swords but less speed etc. really there bunch of ways you can play around in this category.

5. Pick up that helps you speed up, more attack power, defense etc . I believe stuff like these would make the game more interesting.

6. Description of what every special those for each weapon, for example:( I only going to be taking about the sword category since I only been using sword xD. )

62

+ XPhoenixJonanX on January 20th, 2013 at 1:26 pm said:

*1. The Gladiator Sword have a different special ( L1 + Triangle ) than the Blade of Ares ( L1 + Triangle ). I had to experiment with each sword to see what their specials was, what would be the benefits of using them etc. I would like a description saying what each special combination does to every weapon so I don’t have to experiment online gameplay. At least give me an idea of what it does would be fine. I though every sword had the same special ( but different in stats boost ) but I was wrong. Although it did surprise me that each weapon have different abilities :)

7. Every time you are hitting someone I want the blue bar ( I guess the magic bar ) to go up little bit. Its very annoy that the only way to get that bar up is using the blue light torch or what ever you call it xD. There this dude just running around getting all this bonuses and just fighting using the Magic stuff, I was getting annoy how he was getting rewarded by just running around that’s so unfair man :p ( this happens in FFA all the time ). There should be a limited time for how long you can run or something. There always one guy in each match doing this crap.

63

+ XPhoenixJonanX on January 20th, 2013 at 1:26 pm said:

8. Have a least: 10 Relic, 10 Item and 5 Magic for each god in the final product, if there going to be more them, the more hours I going to be putting on the multiplayer. There bunch of ideas I have on putting more content for this part. If you need ideas them put a post about this, I would be glad to help :)

9. Don’t do maps more bigger than they already are and if you do, make a mini map somewhere on the screen that shows the location of your teammates. Every time the enemies attack a red dot should show up to know were they are. Its not fun running around not been able to known where the action is happening xD.

64

+ XPhoenixJonanX on January 20th, 2013 at 1:27 pm said:

10. Enhanced the fighting mechanic. Maybe it’s just me but sometimes I can’t get out of the combo unless I use L2 :( . Maybe it’s me who knows lol

I level 27 ( Ares ), the game is fun, addictive, and looking forward for this. Haven’t play GoW in a while, I believe I will like the multiplayer more than the SP xD.

Anyway that’s all I have tell to make this game more interesting. Sorry for the long list, and comments itself xd. I hope someone takes their time reading this and make judgement what it should be done to modify the multiplayer into a better game :D

I forgot to mention in my last comment, but there needs to also be a party system in this game. Not being able to play with friends in the beta is a huge dissapointment, and it needs to be in the final game.

It’s not bad but needs some tweaks. I’m mostly waiting for single player. One thing I find interesting is that instead of opening the item boxes like Kratos the characters destroy them.

Okay, here’s my take on it.

1) My biggest problem is the problem I have with most multiplayer modes outside of Resistance 2 and Dead Space 2: why exactly are we doing any of this? God of War is known for being a story-based game, so what is the story behind the multiplayer mode? Does Kratos fight our character as a boss at one point in Ascension? Without some connection to the main story or maybe a storyline for the multiplayer itself, I find myself trying to figure out why I’m even bothering.

2) I really liked the arena mode. I liked the various hazards around the stage and the fact that it’s within an enclosed space. More of this sort of thing, please.

3) Do not like that we start off as a generic bald dude and that we do not have the option of creating a female character.

4) That level in the desert with the giant Cyclops (I used to actually know his name when I was in high school and studied Greek myths more) is fairly boring and if you are on a team that doesn’t know what they’re doing as much as some of the others, you will get ganged up on and destroy quickly. This level, more than any other, had me wondering why we’re doing any of this.

+ clupula668 on January 20th, 2013 at 5:44 pm said:

5) Am I nuts for noticing a fifth staircase that did not have a god at the end of it? Athena, maybe?

6) Some of the pickup weapons are ridiculously overpowered. The javelin thing in the arena got me three kills from across the screen with very little effort.

7) Love the cinematic kills when your opponent is very low on life

8) If I were voting on the fourth mode, I’d like a co-op campaign of some sort. Not Kratos in a buddy-movie way, because I can’t imagine Kratos not killing anyone who tried to tag along, but maybe something running parallel to the main story or something.

Personally, I think it’s a lot of fun. I was sold on this since they showed footage at E3. It’s nothing spectacular, but it gets the job done.

I love how people jump to the ridiculous conclusion that my skills in multiplayer dictate my opinion of this trash. I’m sorry, but when a developer clearly states when a game will be the FINAL in the series (GOD OF WAR 3), then proceed to make another one, WITH MULTIPLAYER? Lose your jobs. God of War has and always will be SINGLEPLAYER. It’s completely laughable how this generation has turned into tacked on multiplayer trash. Apparently devs these days have zero hope in a Single-Player only game that they turn to this MP GARBAGE.

I laughed at Halo when “Finish the Fight” has turned into a whole new series of games. I seriously hope this game makes negative sales and another God of War is never made. This is a complete joke. Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls are excellent examples of Single-player only games and they (and will be) amazing. This whole trend of adding multiplayer to games is disgusting and only pleases the short-attention span masses. Enjoy your tacked on MP trash, and joke of a SP. I am done with anything regarding GOW.

@67 – Would you be so kind as to provide a link to an interview where the developers said it was absolutely, positively going to be the final God of War game ever. I don’t recall them ever saying anything other than it would be the game where Kratos finally got his revenge on the gods of Olympus, which is exactly what it was. That doesn’t mean it was the end. In fact, most people I know were disappointed that Ascension is a prequel instead of a sequel to GOW 3.

Super don’t care about this. There’s so many God of War games, and they do very little different game-to-game. The addition of multiplayer isn’t attractive to me in the least; just like adding it to Uncharted. It’s just pointless multiplayer match after multiplayer match. A co-op mode would be more exciting in my opinion, but then you wouldn’t attract the “Call of Duty crowd”, I’m sure.

But I came here to ask, is the game cel shaded? The screenshot at the top there looks like it might be. THAT would be surprising if it was. In the shot up there, it looks almost like a PS3 entry in the Mark of Kri/Rise of the Kasai series. Which would be AMAZING. If it evokes any of that, I guess I should at least give this a look-see…

+ clupula668 on January 21st, 2013 at 5:48 am said:

Not cell-shaded at all, but I can definitely see why’d think that from that picture.

I got a few questions.

1. Do all the things and my level carry over to the real game?

2. Do we get anything special for doing the beta and if so when will that be available to us?

3. Can you either take out or power down the throwing spears?

Just want to ask some questions:

I have another North American PS PLUS account. I downloaded the demo but didn’t play it until yesterday only to find the demo period had been ended. So is there any chance that I can still get the exclusive DLC for people who play the demo?

And what is the difference between there DLCs with the rise of warrior DLCs?

I didnt get the chance to play this multiplayer beta but I agree with some comments here on the multiplayer trophies. I am probably one of the people @51 (Go-buddie-Go) was referring to. Tedious MP trophies will turn me away asap. After all this last installment wouldn’t change the outcome of the story. so please include very simple MP trophies, nothing that requires a grind like level caps and numerous kills or whatnots. Just my two cents. I am turned of off Assassin’s creed because of ridiculous MP trophy system.
