Hitman HD Trilogy on PS3

The release of Hitman: HD Trilogy today on PS3 and PlayStation Network brings Hitman: Blood Money onto the PlayStation format for the first time. With it come two additional classic Hitman games – Silent Assassin and Contracts.

More than anything else IO Interactive has created in the past decade and a half, Hitman has been the defining series for the studio. Five titles in the franchise have been released in the last 12 years, across most AAA platforms available within the same time period.

The combination of the assassin fantasy, game mechanics and freedom of choice makes the Hitman series the most original set of games we have made at IO. Nobody had ever really seen a game like Hitman before — not even the developers who were about to create it. It was a game about a stone-cold killer, but with tongue-in-cheek humor to balance the very mature themes in the game. As Tore Blystad, Game Director on Hitman: Absolution, says: “When dealing with such a dark topic … you need something in there to compensate, to make it less cynical. In the start of Absolution development we tried to say that we wanted to make a serious game rather than a funny one, but within days the humor started creeping back into what we did, and instead of getting rid of it we decided to really embrace it for Absolution.” In many ways, the inherent humor in the Hitman games has been there as a way to balance the very grim, mature themes in the games.

The Hitman games introduced a number of unique gameplay elements including a new type of artificial intelligence, the use of ragdoll physics and the disguise mechanism. Getting those things to work together in a complex system has always been a massive challenge. Crafting the open-ended missions of ‘Codename 47’ along with features such as sniping, disguises and hiding in plain sight took huge amounts of testing and risk-filled development. The result of this development was a game that was extremely difficult to master, which became a staple of the series. The difficulty was made even more dominant by the fact that the team somehow forgot to include a save game feature for the first game, which meant the experience was a lot more punishing (and, it turned out, a lot more exciting) than most other games at that time. With the games that followed, all of which are now part of the Hitman: HD Trilogy, those mechanics and features were further refined.

And then there are all the Easter Eggs. Across all the games there are probably too many to count, but we’re guessing on average it’s probably around 25 in each game. Nobody is really sure because before Absolution, the artists and designers would simply sneak in the Easter Eggs and nobody would really know where they were or who put them there. With Absolution, it all became a little more structured and so things like the Loch Ness Monster, the wearable Blood Money masks, the disco cops, Mini Ninjas references and the appearances of both Kane and Lynch have all been tracked a little better.

One thing that newcomers to the Hitman experience will learn when playing the HD Trilogy is how versatile the different hits really are in these games. There was always a wish to have Agent 47 travel the world, meet interesting people and execute hits on them. So from Silent Assassin to Blood Money you get to go on a variety of different journeys.

Travel to St. Petersburg, attend the German ambassador’s party and assassinate a Russian general. Visit the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and take out a Malaysian electronics tycoon in his Jacuzzi. Of course, there’s also the ‘Gator Gang’, a group of drug dealers moving their merchandise from a tourist riverboat on the Mississippi. And you can always finish off in style by saving the President of the United States, on 47’s hardest assignment yet!

Our hope with HD Trilogy is that fans will get to play their favorites over again, and those who just picked up Absolution and can’t get enough of Agent 47 can experience these classic moments for the first time.

  • How much cash have you put on the heads of each of these games?

(ie, what are the PSN prices?) thanks.

  • Would love to get this HD collection. Whats the price & would PS + members get a discount?

  • I’ll be sure to get this… Especially if the plus gets a discount, guess it would be fare since the update this week was only for the vita.

  • The first paragraph of this post isnt correct. Blood Money has ALWAYS been on the Playstation format, it just came out on PS2 when Xbox 360 got it.

    Hmmmmmm???

Also, couldve made it 3D compatible IO.

  • Is Hitman: HD Trilogy also available on European PSN Store ?

  • I’ve been looking forward to this. My first exposure to Hitman was the PC demo for Silent Assassin, long before I had my own money to buy games. I played that Anathema chapter for hours and hours, figuring out new ways to infiltrate the building and take out my target. It’ll be interesting to see how well I remember my playthrough of that level.

  • yes! im verry happy with this release. love the hitman series You’re given dozens of possible ways to kill your target and escape, theese games have alot of replay value. with this HD collection out all i m waiting for now is a Soul Reaver HD collection!

  • Something that is puzzling me… While all of these HD remakes are nice (seriously, they are, I like that kind of thng!) I still can’t stop thinking about how awesome those would be on the VITA.

Konami did it with the Metal Gear HD compilation, and I think the Zone of the Enders HD compilation will also get the same VITA treatment. I know the VITA is a completely different machine and you can’t just “port” it without doing any work, but to me, the VITA would be an AWESOME device to play all those games from the past in remastered versions. I know I would pay to get this on my VITA.

For instance, there was a rumour a while ago about the Jak and Daxter collection landing on the VITA. It’s quite obvious now the project has been scrapped, and I bought it on PS3. BUT I would have bought it on the VITA. As the Ratchet & Clank collection. Would also buy that on my VITA if it was available on that platform.

Most of my gaming is happenning on the go. And my VITA is awesome for that. But it seems to me that HD remakes of old games might be the perfect fit for such a platform. So many games I haven’t played back then, and lots I would love to play again….

Any chance of a VITA port for this? (probably not… oh well…)

    • We aren’t currently looking at developing these titles for the VITA but if you shout loud enough about it, I’ll be sure to let the fine gentlemen up high know that there are rumblings about this sort of thing. Never hurts to request things.

  • Hmm I was planning on getting this right away today.

But I had no idea that your team didn’t finish the first game right and left out a save option.

Has the option to save been added to the game for the remakes? I don’t have the ability to finish even a 2-3 hour game in one sitting, so not being able to save = not being able to play for me.

    • Codename 47 isn’t part of this deal so you needn’t worry about that. The games in the HD Trilogy are Blood Money, Contracts and Silent Assassin.

  • Interesting. but I’m pre-ordering The Last Of Us Survival Edition then putting the rest of my money away so I can get a PS4 and Xbox 720 + All launch games on day one.

@8, I’d drop the money if they were on Vita. Could use some more solid games on there.

  • @#10 hitman blood money didn’t have a save feature either. if you fail a mission you restart the mission. that’s how it should be. if you want a game to hold your hand and let you save every 5 min then look for something els care bear.

  • So, Hitman on PS Plus to confront the Europe sleeping dogs?

  • Hold my hand?

Unless the game is only 30-60 minutes long, if there’s no save feature I’ll never get far.

I can’t play a whole retail disc game in one sitting, which is the only option if there is no saves/saving.

Don’t care about difficulty/replaying parts of the game, but if I can’t stop and play again later from a checkpoint/save/etc… there’s not much point in playing the first mission(s) over and over.

    • The game saves between missions so we’re not forcing anyone to sit down and play 15 hours straight to get to the end. You can also, deepening on difficulty, choose to save in-mission but exiting a mission will mean you’ll need to start that particular mission over.

  • oh btw, thanks for being a jerk in your reply to me for no apparent reason.

  • If there’s a discount for Plus members, I’ll buy it today. Simple as that ;p

  • I love that I’ll get to play these again in HD, but what about Mini Ninjas 2!? It better exist! Please.. !

  • Can you detail more about the ‘remastering’ aspect for the texture, audio, and video assets?

Do the earlier games render in 1080p natively and/or use FXAA?

Is the audio 24-bit/lossless or at least 320kbit/sec Ogg/AAC?

The answers to these questions will determine if I and my friends buy this at retail today. After the awful-looking primary character models in Sly Cooper HD and terrible looking repeated environmental textures in Shadow of the Colossus, I have no interest in cheap cash-in upscales if they’re not bargain-bin priced.

So far, Just Add Water and their Oddworld re-releases has been the only purchases on this front that I didn’t regret.

Thanks in advance for answering our questions in detail! :)

  • I’m new to Hitman, dunno what a Code Name 47 is.

I just know that this is a post about the 3 games in the HD collection. If you say the ‘first’ can’t save, it sounds like you mean the first game of these three.

Thanks for some clarity, I’ve wanted to try Hitman for a long time but never had the extra money in the PS2 days. Was worried about no saving in the game, but if that’s not related to the HD remakes, then a) great and b) why mention it at all and confuse people.

  • I would love to see a new Hitman game for PS Vita! I really enjoyed Hitman Absolution :)

  • “The release of Hitman: HD Trilogy today on PS3 and PlayStation Network”

Just curious does the statement above mean that the video game is available on the playstation store. If yes please tell me what keywords to search so I can download it!

  • well since its not coming on Vita like nick said, i will wait to see if it gets patched for remote play. i was dying to get this till i read this news.

    God Of War can.

Mortal Kombat did it completely onto the Vita.

ICO & Shadows of the Colossis works remote play.

I will no longer any company not supporting PlayStation Vita.

  • When does the update step out of the shadows?

Am I the only one who would have spent a lot more money on PSN if their store updates came at the beginning of the day? I can count about $100 dollars that would have gone through PSN but instead went to a store retailer because of delayed store updates. Please update so I can give you my money…

  • Price(s)?

  • does the diital version come with Sniper challange mode like the disc version?

  • Is this going to become more widely available on disc? Looking on Amazon, it can only be purchased through 3rd-party sellers. Where is the stock at?

  • No, I think i just wasted 40 bucks, you better go for the disc version

  • i have to say it is pretty disapointing to buy the digital version and find out it does not bring the Sniper Challange mode. we pay the same amount of money as people that bought the disc yet they get it and we don’t. that’s messed up.

  • I have always thought the Hitman series has the best replay value of any game out there. However, after getting this for my PS3, and I tried to play my old favs (Contracts, Blood Money), I quickly realized how dated these games are to the point of frustrating controls, silly AI, etc.

Furthermore, the controls are a little different with each game. Having these 3 games in one nice neat package, one should be able to customize the controller to be the same for all, so your not holstering and unholstering the piano wire when you intend to fire the silverballers.
