The PS2 was doing well long after the PS3 was released. Comparing a sales performance of a handheld to a console is not very logical.
I will use my PS3 even if a I own the next console. It is not that big of a deal. Also consider that a next gen release is only speculation which makes the “fear of change” pointless.
Nice move, Sony. I didn’t think that you had the gumption to announce your product first. Now get it to market and promote the you-know-what out of it before MS’s machine comes out and you have this gen in the bag. The Wii U is already bleeding, go for the jugular.

A PS4 would definitely be awesome, I just don’t feel completely ready for it yet. Also with them just releasing a new PS3 slim I just don’t see it happening. I may be wrong though, who knows! We shall see! :)
Balls are officially blued. However you have my attention. Just spent $299 to upgrade my graphics card so I can run current games on max. Even if it’s $599, I’m not a kid, i can afford it.
I just hoped the leaked news about its AMD processor bizness is just fo fo.. i pray this new console has backwards compatibility i have way too many ps3 titles on disc now and to have to re-purchase via store download them all again is unfeasible (and very expensive even at discount level). So Sony what your fans want to make sure. that you annouce your PS4 is compatible with PS3 games!.. a perfect world would be hey you can buy a PS4 and not have to worry about all the games you already own becoming dust keepers it shall be backwards compatible! for the love of the gaming gods make this happen.
I highly doubt this is the PS4 everyone. Microsoft has a 99 percent chance to release in Fall of 2013 a new console. Why would Sony now announce a new console next month to release also at the same time? Yes it could happen but The PS3 still has a lot of power to it it can easily last another year and a half. If anything most likely this is a slim Vita release. I wouldn’t really understand a new console this Fall when games like The last of Us releasing and were still waiting on the game The Last Guardian if that ever comes out.
Advancements in technology and broad consumer-end affordability will indeed bring BIG upgrades to console gaming.
RAM prices have dropped through the floor (comparatively), GPU performance has skyrocketed and if the leaks are to believed, a hyper-threaded quad-core would bring greater uniformity to industry, degrading exclusive content and performance restrictions for developers.
Not to mention 4k resolution, which is quite a leap in and of itself. Both OPPO and Marantz are now including 4k technology in their products which means the future of double-resolution is as a standard is likely. The downside of that being media file size, pushing media into a digital only format, which is a downgrade for consumer-end options, specifically the secondary resale market.
The outlook for next gen performance looks like a comparable leap to that of the PS2 to PS3 transition.
Besides, the last game for the PS2 has not even been released yet. It is slated for release in Japan as of March, 2013. The games title is Seekers of Adoulin

PS2 to PS3 for example added Blu-ray, the Playstation Network, PS Store (not sure if that was a launch feature), Sixaxis, and was supposed to pretty much be the new entertainment center also playing music and movies, supporting an internet browser, etc.

i just buy a 640 GB hard drive for my 120GB ps3 last night. hope i fill it up before ps4 is here.

Its all about the wow factor. PS2 vs PS3 was a BIG upgrade in features, resolution and graphics.
PS4 to PS3 will not be as impressive. – especially when PS3 still has games like GoW Ascension unreleased
