MLB 13 The Show’s Franchise Mode Gets Personal

Luis Martinez's Avatar + Posted by Luis Martinez on Feb 07, 2013 // Associate Designer, MLB 13 The Show

Franchise Mode has been a big part of MLB The Show ever since its induction, and we’re confident that this iteration is our best yet. We redid most of our core systems, such as Scouting, Training and Player Progression, shifting the mode’s main focus back to player development. We also improved our menu and added a ticker bar so that you feel more connected to what’s happening in your league. Go ahead and watch our video to see all of this in action.

Training is now done on an individual player basis, and it can be as simple or as complex as you want. You can go in and custom set training drills for every one of your players, or have the auto-trainer handle this for you. If you only want to set drills for a couple of your players and the rest set to auto, you can do that too.

Scouting has received a major overhaul. The main goal was to give it a “human element,” to mimic the fact that there are “busts” and “diamonds in the rough” in every draft class. The scouting system itself boils down to first discovering players, and then scouting them individually to get a more accurate report of their attributes and MLB ETA.

In an effort to add personality to each club, we’ve incorporated Team-Specific Player Valuations. These numbers are based on each team’s historical tendencies, their stadium and league. For example, teams from the AL will not value bunting as highly as teams from the NL, while certain teams like the Yankees will value on-base-percentage much more so than the average team. Teams with home stadiums that suppress power will tend to value speedy contact hitters over slower power hitters. These changes affect every facet of a team’s decision making process, from drafting, to promotions and demotions, to trade decisions and free agent acquisitions.

You’ll get to experience all of this, and more, when MLB 13 The Show is released on March 5th for both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

Will this have cross-play and cross-buy?

Amazon is running the same deal as last year where you get $20 off the Vita version for buying the PS3 one and it together. Therefore, there’s no cross buy. Bad move, bad move!!! Swing and miss

It looks like you hit it out of the park(pun intended against my better judgement) with this years entry, but sadly I will not be purchasing. With God of War, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, and Bioshock coming next month, I will not have money left for this. However, if there was an announcement about Cross Buy, I would get it instead of Metal Gear, but I don’t see that happening (whether it be a money issue with MLB, or Sony just deciding not too). Good luck in the new year, and go Rays and Cubs!

Good Stuff, loving the Franchise improvements very informative. I have one quick question for PS3/Vita Cloud save. Has the save feature improved to save to the cloud at any point in the game i.e. after batter or is it the same as last year?

Anyone know how many retailers are doing the buy both version for 80$ like last year?

So far the few ads I’ve seen from local stores are selling a ‘combo’ of both for 100$ lol

Is it the exact same game on both PS3 and Vita? Or is Vita a bit stripped down?

Will this MLB13 have a transactions section in Franchise and RTTS? Last MLB 12 was missing this feature. I like being updated on news of what other teams are doing with their rosters. Doesn’t make sense not to have this. I always look forward to each iteration of this franchise. But at some point would like to see this game come once every 2-3 years, with paid patches(5.99-7.99?) containing updates to the game (graphical, game additions). I pay every year for one or two of those.

Will MLB 13 The Show support 3D? It was one of my favorite features in MLB 12!

All of the news about franchise mode that I’ve heard is about the scouting and management side of things. Will the owner’s side of franchise see a similar overhaul? It’s been frustrating having the same options for ballpark upgrades and the like for the last few years. A Create-a-Stadium mode would also be a welcome addition!

MLB: The Show should be a cross-buy game, just like Sly Cooper. The fact that it isn’t is ridiculous.

Well done “The Show” staff.

I’ve been buying 2K MLB games for years because Franchise type modes are my favourite in any sports game and for baseball I’ve always liked theirs much better.

But from the look of what you’ve shown here, I expect this will be the first year I buy The Show instead of the other game. (bought both last year (wanted to try the 3D), but traded in The Show fairly quickly).

Thanks for adding a bunch to my favourite game mode, looking forward to trying this out.

Hello, I do not expect a response, but that would be sweet…

How do you address platoon situations? Does the depth chart address that? Or if I place player A in the lineup vs. RHP and player B in the lineup vs. LHP will it remain like that?

Will the player have an opportunity to decrease the number of games per year in franchise mode to say around 80-90 games instead of 162? It can be difficult to make it a whole season, and I would really like to enjoy the fun of the off season. Franchise mode is way more entertaining than regular season mode, and the choice to lower the amount of games in Franchise mode would be a great add for this game!!

+ BENJAM1N_LINUS on February 24th, 2013 at 12:23 pm said:

Yes I also need to know if we can choose the number of games per season in franchise mode.

You allow it in the the stripped down season mode, and it’s just not good enough. Listen, I can’t play a multiple year franchise at 162 games per, and simming defeats the purpose of the game.

Is the pitch-out game freeze fixed? How about baserunners being hit with a batted ball and having it count as an error on the defense? Also, when, if ever, are you planning to introduce an option to create a team and stadiums? Seems simple enough in Madden….
