PlayStation Community Update: The Amazing Community of Gran Turismo 5

Welcome to this week’s PlayStation Community Update, where we shine the light on some of the most interesting content that is inherently owned and provided by you, the gamers. Last week, you may have checked out the Battle Bowl, a massive Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 tournament between 2 competitive communities: FraggedNation and Urgent Fury. This tournament is going on all month so you can still sign up today!

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on the legendary Gran Turismo series and some marquee community events that any racer might want to get involved in. We reached out to Gran Turismo 5 fanatic MasterGT to give us a breakdown of Gran Turismo 5 community events. If you love the series as much as millions of other gamers do, read on. Whether you’re a newcomer to Gran Turismo 5, or a racing vet, don’t hesitate to jump into some of these fantastic community races.

Visit the Gran Turismo Events space in the PlayStation Community forums to join in the events, find new friends, and compete in an incredibly welcoming community.

Hey everyone, MastrGT here from the Gran Turismo PlayStation Community. The PlayStation Community forums are home to a lot of different things, but within the Gran Turismo 5 community, we’ve made a nice little home here by being able to meet racers new and old through a multitude of different events. So to start with, make sure you book mark it!

So that’s step 1; swing in and get to know the Gran Turismo community, filled with amazing players (some of which have been finalists in the GT Academy reality series), great Photo Mode artists, or racers who are generally knowledgeable of GT or cars and racing. In fact, for the past two years, this community has been using Gran Turismo to bring players of all abilities together on-line, no matter what type of racing interests them. Rally racing, NASCAR, F1, drifting, pick-up type racing, GT, Touring Car and just about any other type of high speed fun has been available here. Gran Turismo has the variety of cars, and the millions of drivers, to make this possible. Because of the depth of the GT community the GT Events forum always has something new going on, including the fresh Sunday Cup series of races!

And that brings us to Step 2; the races! Here’s how you can get in on the action with us. Two weekly events are specifically designed to attract racing fans from the broader forum membership and have had support from the PlayStation Community Management team, dedicated PlayStation Community forum members, and other special guests.

The Saturday Afternoon Events are run by GT community member, cr0wlft0fdmurder. Click here to visit the event page.

The Saturday afternoon races normally are longer races, taking up to about one hour to finish. That gives everyone a chance to settle in for a more measured and natural race, and we feel it captures the essence of racing cars. You can join in as soon as tomorrow, 2/9! Click here to check out the events page on the Saturday Afternoon Events.

PlayStation Community Update

The Monday Night Events are run by me, MastrGT. Click here to visit the event page.

The shorter Monday Night races have also been quite popular because they allow many players to race whenever they can during a weekday evening. The race program allows using virtually any and all of the 1,100 cars in GT, depending on each night’s race details: small street cars, then small race cars; bigger street cars, then bigger race cars. Anything is possible, no matter which car or track we use. The cars are usually very easy to find and down time between races is meant to be short, so the tempo is kept high. The open lobby can be very popular, but we can race over two, sometimes three, hours, making it very easy for you to join in on the fun.

Thanks MastrGT, representing the Gran Turismo community! There are a lot more racing events to be found, and you can find out about all of them by visiting the Events page in the PlayStation Community forums. If you’re a racing fan who’s looking for a great community with some heated competition, hop in to these areas and feel the GT Community love.

  • Love GT5, its beyond any driving experience you can find out there!!

  • I havent played the game and Motorstorm Apocalypse lately because i need to set up my driving wheel again, dont like to play them with my Dualshock3

  • Dude, I put so many hours into Gran Turismo 1 and 2 on the first Playstation back in the day. Epic game, I remember being stoked on a supped-up Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Played GT Prolouge when it came out but I have moved on. Glad to see a new generation of gamers getting into this Playstation experience.

  • Never played GT5, but they look like they have a pretty lively community.

@remanutd5 Are you talking about the move racing wheel? Did they ever add move support to Motorstorm Apocalypse? I haven’t played mine in a while.

By the way Morgan, were these Community Spotlights always on Fridays? For some reason I remember seeing these posts on weekends.

    • The older version, called Community Spotlights, used to be on Sundays. The new series here, called Community Updates, are a bit wider in scope and focus more on things that the PlayStation community does that the broader audience can get in to, or may want to know about. Whereas the series before was more about individual stories from the PlayStation Community.

    • oh and these are every Friday morning =)

  • GT Vita ? ;)

  • I have a love/hate relationship with GT5, love the “feel” of the driving engine. When you’re going around the track and you get into the groove of how the car handles it’s magic. But the silly standard/premium car difference still irritates me and the limited customization of the cars really holds it back. Please no more “paint chips”!! Also a much better selection of tracks is needed if we ever see GT6!

  • I would love to play this game, but sadly the last update broke the game. Now it just loops on the load screen. Here is hoping PD fixes the mess they made.

  • I still play GT5 pretty much daily. I’m kinda down about the Feb 20th announcement, because I am comvinced it’s PS4, and I feel PS3 has so much life left in it for it’s exclusive franchises…..it’s just the 3rd party devs who are demanding console hardware move on. (though I do understand the PS3 does have some hardware drawbacks, so new hardware will be good for Sony and fans as well in terms of features).

I’m down about it because I had my fingers crossed for a late gen PS3 GT6 so Yamauchi-san can show what he could really do with the PS3 hardware taking advantage of the programming advancements made by Insomniac, Guerilla, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and others with the PS3. A benefit Kaz and PD didn’t have with GT5 as it was one of the very first PS3 games in development, and it’s graphics angine was finalized long before those advancements were made. You can’t patch that kinda stuff in later, the engine has to be opened up for a new game.

It would seem lightyears beyond GT5, and have the sales advantage of the PS3’s 70plus million install base. How many sales can you get as a PS4 launch game? And it’s new hardware again. It’s a shame GT6 won’t be on PS3.

  • @BlueBl1zzard no im talking about my GT driving wheel(works with GT5 and MSA)

  • 1) Where is GT-Vita?

    2) If 1 isn’t happening maybe develop an app for the vita that can be used with some cross play functionality (like LBP)

    3) I expect to see a trailer for GT6 on February 20 running realtime on the PlayStation 4 ;)

  • I really like the new direction the community update has taken. Its cool what what else is out there to expand the gaming experience.

  • Being one of only a small number of people to have actually Platinumed GT5, (out of an even smaller minority to have done so only using a Logitech Driving Force GT steering wheel) I can attest to the fact that GT5 is currently the best racing simulator on the market… for ANY console.

  • When is Gran Turismo coming to the VITA? :)

  • Hey Morgan how about we get the older Gran Turismo games on the store? I’d love to play the older games again, especially GT2 and GT4!

  • @6 jimmyfoxhound – Yeah i hate the paint chips too, but i don’t really mind the “standard” cars to be honnest, im happy with the 1000+ cars, premium or not!

On a side note, i think PD should re-release GT5 with ALL DLC’s on disc… Maybe make a cool new cover art featuring the new 14′ Vette too!

  • i love GT5, its all i play and i have mad games lol.

i play PSP GT on my Vita everyday also. you can use AdHoc Party to connect to online within AdHoc Party so its still fun too and MORE Tracks then GT5.

i will try to check out these events.

  • Small question, why does it say that I don’t have my year and 3 months more of plus then my current subscription? ^^;;;

  • Cool! I don’t play the game online enough to justify joining & commenting on the major GT related forums, but I still surf ’em from time to time, and its great to see moderator MastrGT gettin’ some recognition on the Playstation Blog. :)

These days, I only play the game in an attempt to get at least one of every single available car in my garage (after owning several of my top favorites, I’m at over 1,300 now) as well as to help out my PSN friends (who have waited so long before buying the game) out with cars they need to progress. Pre-ordered the Collectors Edition through Amazon (hence, I have the Chrome and/or Stealth cars rewarded for doing this) along with every single DLC available and own at least one of every new dealership car (including several models of the 3 different versions of the crazy Red Bull F1 racecar). I seriously doubt I’ll ever do the 24 hour races on A-Spec or get that “Gold in every single event” trophy. Got 40 level B-Spec a very long time ago, though. :) 79% trophies earned, all with Dualshock 3, since I currently don’t have any type of desk to mount my Driving Force Pro wheel on.
