Morgan Haro's Avatar + Posted by Morgan Haro on Feb 11, 2013 // Community Manager, PlayStation Digital Platforms

Welcome to this week’s PlayStation Plus update, where we highlight the latest free games, discounts, and features that PS Plus members can expect in the coming week. Many have already jumped online to play Guardians of Middle Earth, which arrived free for PS Plus members last week, and this week we’re bringing you one of the bright indie stars in gaming with Closure; a PSN-exclusive that turned heads when it debuted last year. Read on and also check out some of the great discounts on amazing titles like Critter Crunch.

Don’t have PlayStation Plus? Go to the PlayStation Store on your PS3 or PS Vita or click here to get access via the Sony Entertainment Network online store.

February 12th PlayStation Plus Update

Closure (PS3)

Free for PS Plus members

Closure is a unique and stylistic puzzle platformer that takes the concept of light and shadow and twists it up into something never before seen. In Closure’s dark and foreboding universe, the only things that exist are what you can see. An object properly lit up is physically there, yet an object shrouded in darkness ceases to be. Experience this mind-bending puzzler free as a Plus member.

Critter Crunch

80% off for PS Plus members (Original price: $6.99; PS Plus Price: $1.40)

Developed by the geniuses at Capybara games, this award-winning, critically-acclaimed puzzle game asks players to take control of the cuddly Biggs, a loveable jungle creature with an iron-clad stomach. Biggs is in search of the jewel-rich critters that invade his habitat once a season, and using his tongue to pluck them from their vines, stuffs them into the waiting mouths of larger critters. This sets off chain reactions of bursting critters that drop the tasty jewels for Biggs to regurgitate for his hungry family. Sporting an 87 / 100 on Metacritic, with 1up.com giving it an A and praising it for its “”Beautiful visuals and inventive puzzles…worth sinking your teeth into.”, you owe it to yourself to hop on this gem for only $1.40. Plus, it has a ‘Barfing Tutorial’. I mean… c’mon, how can you pass that up?
Alien Breed (PS3 and PS Vita – Cross Buy Enabled)

20% off for PS Plus members (Original price: $9.99; PS Plus Price: $7.99)

This PSN re-release of the original run-and-gun shooter features cross-platform multiplayer between Vita and PS3, as well as ad-hoc/local and online co-op on respective platforms. With new content packing 30 levels of carnage, you’ll find much to love with options for original or enhanced visuals, and leaderboards for the more competitive among us. This launch week discount is exclusive for PS Plus members, so don’t miss out!

Derrick the Deathfin (PS3)

50% off for PS Plus members (Original price: $7.99; PS Plus Price: $4.00)

Another PSN gem hitting a great price for PS Plus members; Derrick the Deathfin is a fast-paced arcade action title set in a unique aquatic world made entirely out of paper & card. Rampage around the globe munching on paper creatures under the guise of avenging the death of his parents. With a unique art style that sets it apart from other games, and great gameplay to boot, check out Derrick the Deathfin for only $4.00 as a PS Plus member.
NHL 13 (PS3)

20% off for PS Plus members (Original price: $47.99; PS Plus Price: $38.39)

With the NHL season in full swing, hockey fans may want to take notice on this deal. NHL 13 accurately captures the speed, creativity, and strategy of today’s NHL with revolutionary True Performance Skating. Sync up with friends with the real-world of hockey in GM Connected, the first-ever online multiplayer dynasty mode with cooperative and Online Team Play, or relive the greatest moments from today’s NHL in NHL Moments Live. I became a plus member in December. So far I’ve downloaded over $150 in free games. So keep up the good work. I will be re-subbing next year. On a side note, I thought I read the 3 month bonus can be applied to existing accounts. True? Or am I dreaming?

Terrible terrible choice of game for the rental collection.

I wouldn’t play this game if you paid me.

And I’m the one paying you!

Either learn how to get good deals/games people actually want for a rental or go back to the old Plus format which was much much better.

So funny seeing the butt hurt gamers like yourself attack everyone because you are not happy with the free game that Sony has offered. It’s people like you that will close the door and grab their poodle and punch it and then open the door hoping no one heard the dogs scream. Get a life and give X360 a try! You will fit right in over there.

+ boomstickbhg on February 11th, 2013 at 10:01 am said:

Huh, the poll says it’s been up for 3 days. If you know that far ahead (you’ve claimed to know plus content weeks in advance) why do you always wait for the last possible day to let us know what is coming?

Since Morgan has repeatedly sold us on his lies of Great things coming and promises like the NA xmas sale would be equal quality to the EU one + all of his other fairly constant lies, is there someone at sony we an call to cancel our Plus and get our money back?

Normally I wouldn’t expect anything, but since Sony’s PR Plus rep has been lying about Plus content for months now, I’m pretty sure we have a case for getting money back.

We haven’t gotten what MH promised, not by a long long shot.

Is it just customer service to contact about this, or does Morgan have a boss we can/should be complaining to?

    I’m not sure where you’re getting the ‘lies’ part from dude =) Here’s what we’ve promised gamers in Plus: Free games for members, discounts on content in the PS Store, and exclusives like Cloud Storage and Auto Updates.

    Can Plus improve as a service? Of course, there’s always room for improvement, and we’re always striving for it with the resources that we have. But the content in these updates has always delivered on what was communicated in the posts.

I’ve been interested in Closure for a while so it’s nice to get it free.

I would get Derrick but I’ve too many games to play and won’t mind paying full price for it later since it doesn’t cost much to start with.

I’m also interested in Alien Breed but that’s not enough of a discount to make me bite right now.

+ DazeOfWar on February 11th, 2013 at 10:10 am said:

I don’t even care anymore. I have Closure and it’s a great game but once again nothing for me. I think the last time I got something I didn’t own or I wanted was maybe October or November.

I know there is still stuff left for the month but I’m not keeping my hopes up for anything good. What I really want is a monthly update. Quite screwing around and make it happen.

@boomstickbhg

Are you being serious? It’s hard to tell if you are being sarcastic or ……? You want your money back because of what? Sony isn’t giving you the free game or discounts that YOU want? Amazing! Over 70 million PS3/Vita owners and you think Sony is going release something that pleases ALL PS3/Vita owners? Come on, you need to walk over and look in the mirror and say “My expectations are ridiculous!” and then slap yourself HARD.

125

+ smoothboarder540 on February 11th, 2013 at 10:14 am said:

Closure looks okay, but I’d still prefer a full ps3 game. And I think that’s enough of the platformers for now. I’m also interested in seeing a quality game given to vita owners soon. I know nfs: most wanted or p4g would be too much to ask for but you wouldn’t have to try too hard to give a better game than chronovolt or foosball.

126

+ jamonit23 on February 11th, 2013 at 10:14 am said:

Vita is another soon to be dead hand held.

That’s months in a row for “nothing for me this week”.

I only do 3 months of US plus, and so far I should have spent that on pre-ordering a good title.

I would like to see better quality games offered.

I don’t care for lame minis, I don’t need cloud storage, or auto updating.

Most of your discounts aren’t worth it. Or for the lame game it’s for.

I will not buy a PS4 until it’s been released for a couple years.

EU’s store layout is better and their PR’s respond to questions.

Sony US plus users are jumping ship to different regions.

Sad that this is the only service that’s decent, wish Sony had another to compete with so maybe they would up their game.

Not bad. I will definitely download Closure. I’ll most likely pick up Derrick, too. I’ve had Critter Crunch for a long time. Anyone who doesn’t pick up Critter Crunch at this price is insane. It’s a great game – solo, cooperatively, or competitively.

@CrusaderForever

His expectations are based off of what is being released in EU for their PLUS, as such they are not ridiculous.

@KidCommand and @DaGimp

Regional differences will only explain why a specific game is not released and will never explain the gigantic discrepancy between the two regions in terms of value. Value is independant of regional laws. If they can’t get a 60$ value game for a particular week when EU is getting it, then find 6 $10 games to release so that the value discrepancy can be wiped away. Not difficult.

and Gimp, didn’t you just last week admit to being a troll anyway? Why should anyone care about your opinion?

    There’s not much I can do to help a gamer who isn’t excited by a game being added into Plus because they don’t like it. =| While Plus is it’s own program in EU, I’m aware of that feedback from the community, but I’m afraid there’s no real news to share with regards to sentiments there.

139

+ JoeGoodsnake on February 11th, 2013 at 10:29 am said:

@grbolivar

Most kids complaining on the board are actually at this point complaining about the value difference in what’s being offered in EU vs NA. There are a few kids here and there that are complaining specifically for Sleeping Dogs, but this is also motivated by the fact that the quality between what’s been released here is barely comparable to the quality that EU received in Sleeping Dogs.

Anyway, what’s it to you if a few kids want more value for the same service you’re paying for? If their complaints were heard, it’s you that benefits anyway, so I’m unsure as to why it bothers you.

Seriously guys who creates these posts not to be harsh but proofreading is something taught in elementary school In fact the first thing I do after creating a web page is proofreading it making sure its accurate i.e not embedding the wrong video in it.

Sadly this explains why Sony is having so much trouble toppling the 360 here in the U.S. if you guys can’t market advertise properly on your own blog how can I expect you not to screw up elsewhere. This is a weekly epidemic you guys needs to fix get some quality control or something geez.

Now about the update meh its ok I guess nothing for me but why discount a game that was discounted weeks ago. I like many others would prefer discounts on new drop items like Persona 4 Arena

@Morgan

Sorry for the offtopic but I would really like an answer here.
Little Deviants, I know BigBig studios closed but can Sony fix their own game? The online trophies are glitched and they need a fix. The Leaderboard is still running on SONY’s IP so if someone fixes their own launch title on their own handled console, that would be very nice.

Please take note of this to someone on the PlayStation office.

Thank you.

Getting Closure by the way.

Two weeks in a row without a Vita game? What’s up with that? I thought for sure it’d be a cross-platform game this week, but instead we get a PS3-only indie game that’s been discounted before and has been part of a indie bundle for the PC.

Lame week.

Good points about value if you can’t get a great $40 game say Sleeping dogs then go get me 4 $10 games heck I’d settle for 4 $5 games in a week just to make e feel appreciated, but hey we can’t even get these guys to proofread their own articles so why complain.

What I want is fairness if the EU gets $120 worth of games in a 3 month period for around $17 then guess what I want $120 worth of games for a 3 month period.

147

+ KidCommando on February 11th, 2013 at 10:40 am said:

@JoeGoodSnake

Value is represented by what YOU are getting NOT by what your neighbor is getting. You should be basing your value on the $50 you spent for your subscription and if you are getting your moneys worth with content.

If you can show me when SONY said EU and US subscriptions would have similar content or be similar in value, then I will shut up.

Do you also compare the amount of chocolate chips in US cookies to EU cookies? What about EVERY SINGLE OTHER THING you purchase in the US, do you also compare that to how they buy those products overseas?

What if SONY made everyones Plus subscription just like JAPAN? Does that mean just because we all get the same content that the value is justified? NO, value is what YOU get for YOUR money, not how it compares to other subscriptions across the world.
