Call of Duty: Black Ops II — Revolution DLC coming to PSN Feb 28

Dan Amrich's Avatar + Posted by Dan Amrich on Feb 12, 2013 // Community Manager, Ubisoft

Hydro - Damned Bridge

As the old saying goes, “the revolution will not be televised.” Nonsense – it’s not only on your TV screen, but it will be interactive, too. Revolution, the first DLC pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, arrives on PlayStation Network on February 28 – and there’s more inside this collection than you may be expecting.

Grind - Judges Table
Revolution offers a heck of a lot of content for both multiplayer and Zombies fans. First up are the four multiplayer maps:

  • Hydro: Located in Pakistan, this hydro-electric plant comes complete with a lethal spillway that floods with very little warning.
  • Grind: Set in a skate park in Venice Beach (the birthplace of skateboarding!), quarter-pipes and curved surfaces drive players away from easy cover and into intense firefights.
  • Downhill: A ski resort in the French Alps, this snowy map is complete with a moving gondola system that can both offer cover and crush you to death.
  • Mirage: Located in China’s Gobi Desert, this luxury resort has been ravaged by a sandstorm.

Mirage - Sandy Oasis

It’s worth noting that Mirage is also the first Black Ops II map where Domination takes place in a triangular flag pattern instead of a linear one – that is, you can run laps around the main hotel (or cut through it) as you try to capture the three flags at three different corners of the map. You may find this changes up your Domination strategies a bit.

As a bonus, Revolution also contains the first downloadable weapon in Call of Duty history. The Peacekeeper SMG has the small form factor of a compact submachine gun, but the range of an assault rifle. It’s actually rated two points higher in range than the longest-range SMG in the game, the MSMC. It’s not the overpowered monster that I think some gamers were afraid it might be, but it will likely become a very popular choice for the short-to-medium range specialists out there. And once you level it up along with the rest of your SMGs, it too can sport gold and diamond camos.

Downhill - Ski Lift
If you are a Zombies fan, Treyarch has some secrets and surprises in store for you, too. Die Rise is an all-new Zombies level that takes place in a shattered skyscraper; one false move might send you right over the edge in a very literal and non-metaphorical sense. The verticality of this level makes it feel unlike other Zombies experiences; you’re constantly finding new places above and below, exploring the rubble, locating parts for buildables, and even finding surprises in the very unsafe elevators. Some of those surprises are good, and some of them…well, just be prepared for anything, okay?

Turned

Last but definitely not least, Revolution offers a new way to play Zombies altogether, in the form of a new mode called Turned. Throw out your expectations for a strategic and calculating Zombies experience – this one’s all about adrenaline. Up to four players can join in; one is human, the other three are zombies. The winner of the match is the person who can survive as the human the longest. A Reverse Gun Game weapon loadout means that the human switches from powerful to weaker weapons as their turn continues; whichever zombie player can take out the human becomes the human themselves. It’s very fast, very frantic, and makes a great short experience for those times you want to play but can’t commit to a long gameplay session.

Prepare to have your high expectations met when Revolution arrives on PSN February 28. And look for me in the online lobbies — my PSN ID is OneOfSwords, and I’m the easy target!

I can’t come up with a reason that a game developer or publisher would want to ship a “broken” game on any platform — their goal is to make players happy.

Releasing dlc a month late for ps3 doesn’t make players happy so why do you do that? Because microsoft pays you to that’s why. I don’t see how this is any different.

Yes, it’s very different. If you do not see why, first, please read this:

    http://oneofswords.com/2012/06/e3-2012-call-of-duty-dlc-still-on-xbox-first/

While player happiness is the primary goal of a game being published, the disappointment of a delay is temporary, whereas the quality of a game is much more permanent, good or bad.

I’m sorry — I can accept that you are frustrated, but I simply do not follow your logic. Game quality is not the same thing as a release date.

Ultimately, you will play the games that will make you happy. (That’s what I do.) If that is not Black Ops II in this case, I’m sorry to hear it, but maybe another Activision game will make you happy at a later date.

Dan, I appreciate your reply (but I shouldn’t have to come to the US blog to make my complaints and I know other users have been complaining for months to no avail or reply).
Which part of that law makes it illegal for activision to set the price? Price-fixing is to stop 2 companies from making a deal where the both agree not to undercharge each other and overcharge the consumer. As Sony and Activision are not competing entities with the same/similar products – the customer has no choice in the first place.
In fact if anything they could be accused fo the following: Abusing a dominant market position
This includes anti-competitive practices, eg a business with a large market share imposing unfair prices on customers or suppliers.

I apologize if I am wrong on this, and If I am at least I will learn something

I’m sorry you thought the Elite pass covered more than MW3 DLC, because it was never advertised as anything else — they were very clear in the FAQs and in the official statements that your Elite Premium membership would cover all MW3 DLC. I’m afraid your assumption was incorrect — sorry

@ dan You should have made us pay 50 for elite dude to get the maps..Now people will play this core game and never buy the dlc…but the game was not even truly tied to the elite program as MW3 was…so you advertised elite free..This is one reason why people are saying your game is broke.. You really screwed your own self..lol

Elite was and remains free. Elite Premium had perks that benefited MW3 players; it was optional. I’m sorry if you are still upset about this, but it was all made very clear in the FAQs on Call of Duty’s Elite website. But since Elite Premium is no longer available, it’s in the past, and the Season Pass offers DLC at a discounted rate.

If you do not want to buy the SP, you certainly don’t have to; it’s optional, like any DLC purchase is. If you have the main game and you enjoy it, keep on enjoying it. If you aren’t enjoying it…play what makes you happy. :)

I could open a ticket with activsion support, which I have done with other issues, but it would be a waste of time. First of all they would pretend it isn’t an issue they’ve heard of and give me no helpful advice. But they would be complete idiots to have not heard of such widespread issues. They probably just decided that it would take too much money out of their Grand Canyon sized pockets or the code is so bad that it will just cause more problems. Either way I’m done hoping that this game gets fixed and I will not be buying any more Call of Duty games which is just sad as it was my favorite franchise. Thank you Activision for driving Call of Duty into the ground.

Just my opinion.

Exclusivity is a horrible reality. I do like that you only mentioned games not related to Activision that gave PS3 users exclusive content, you made a good point about other game companies balancing out Activision. All you people complaining, you’ll still buy the dlc, or download it since you already bought the season pass.

Dan, don’t take things so personally, you seem to be getting agitated in your responses, this is how the blog always is.

So why was the ps3 version of this game a blurry mess at launch that needed to be patched? Developer incompetence? How many cod games have there been for ps3 now? Was it a new engine? I don’t think so.

It’s ok, i understand you’re not privy to the backroom deals. I don’t play cod btw i just have an interest in the business side of this industry.

Most games launch and quickly get patched. I don’t think Black Ops II is unique for having the devs address issues ASAP. If you don’t play COD, that’s fine, but what you are asking about is not the business but the development side. Ask any developer — they are different! :)

@Dan amrich what you said to post 50 is somewhat false.. every product has a market price the publisher of the product sets it to the market value to sale.. thats the law. what you showed was anti consumer selling.. prices can be sold at any price. If I go kmart and buy a pair of shoes for 14.99 and walmart has them for 12.99. and maker of them says the shoes are worth 24.99.. No one has broken the law.

Theres is no law versus that here inth usa. maybe in uk.. You cant say for that but usa. you sell what ever you want.. and if an exclusive deal the other promotion will have sell it for more to ge the deal money back. mybe it intenatioanal value of the product is way it sold more/ but activision set the price to sell the product becuase it does have starting market price value by law. If not it doesnt get sold.

Inferior versions of games affect sales which is a business issue obviously.

The ps3 edges out the 360 in power. That is a fact. Of course it is harder to code for the ps3 and it takes more work to take advantage of that power but you guys sell 30+ million units of cod every year so i think you can afford it. What’s the problem then? There are only two conclusions you can come to. Either the devs are incompetent or activision is paid off.

Dan, appreciate your transparency and level-headed attitude as usual. I’m in no way thrilled about the exclusive deal, but I know there’s nothing we can do about it so I take it as it is. My only issue is I really wish there was more transparency in these deals. Not necessarily all the juicy details, but at least a basic date as to when it ended or if there was even a prayer’s chance of it changing.

Given the relationship of Activision and Microsoft, I think it’s pretty clear this is something that will likely never change. I’ve watched as these exclusivity deals have changed this entire generation, and I’m still in complete shock that they’ve spread to things such as themes, avatars, and even demos. I fear it will soon spread to retail purchases having timed-exclusives and i’ll have to buy my PS3 games in a brown paper bag out of shame.

I played the Zombie mode on BO2 for the first time ever last month. I seriously can’t see what is so enjoyable about it though. The experience was completely underwhelming. It was like a mod for a PS2 game that seemed rough and dated.

That experience only reinforced my view that CoD is most definitely not for me. It seems most people play it because everyone else does and not because it is a quality experience…kinda like the pet rock. If they are having fun with it, I guess thats all that matters though.

I easily had way more fun with Dead Nation as a zombie game.

Dan on number 56 the guy was saying it would be a waste of time to open a ticket and I can divulge some more insight: When I had my original launch 60GB console after playing an hour or so into the MP, Zombies or Single player the console would immediately shutdown on it’s own flashing red lights. i contacted sony and they gave me some trouble shooting which didn’t help. Then I went on Activision community forums and I found MULTIPLE(caps for emphasis) threads of people saying the same thing. The mod Foxhound-pro told people to set up activision tickets or get sony customer service. The main thing I’ve experienced is Neither are willing to admit to any fault: Activision will say it’s not there fault and to contact Sony and then when you do Sony turns around saying “sorry it’s nothing we can do, contact Activision as it’s their game” So it’s a continuous cycle of both Activision and Sony pointing fingers to the other and not getting things done. Some of us don’t really care who’s at fault we just want the problem to be isolated and fixed or at least made aware of what is causing it……To be continued

79

+ StealthBlade98 on February 12th, 2013 at 2:29 pm said:

……continued from 77:
After reading the community forums for quite awhile I’ve came to the conclusion the Original Launch PS3’s(20,60,80 and some first gen slims) consoles were prone to having freezes/lockups or even console shutdowns that actually bricks our consoles. Mine shut down 5 times playing blops 2 back in november 20-25th but didn’t brick until early January(6th to be precise got YLOD) playing Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning. So far I haven’t experienced anything yet on my new 160GB slim ps3 but it’s quite clear neither sony or activision wants to admit to playing some part of this widespread phenomena.
With that said while i enjoy black ops 2 i’m disappointed in Zombies: treyarch claimed to have some sort of campaign with that mode but it’s still the same thing: infinite waves of zombies with no clear end game. :(

Season pass for PS3 is £41.99 in U.K & €51.99 for the rest of Europe.

Convert that to dollars and U.K is paying $65.63 and the rest of Europe is paying $69.88 compared to the U.S PS3 price of $49.99.

So not only do us Euro thrash have to pay more than xbox users we also have to pay more than U.S PS3 users.

Activision say its Sonys fault, Sony say its Activisions fault.

Despite the fact that I often wish that I never bought game (I skipped MW3 altogether but got this game because I THOUGHT it would be as enjoyable as BO1. Instead I got an OK campaign with a fun zombie mode and the worst CoD MP game other than MW2), I would be willing to pay money simply for the zombie stuff BY ITSELF for a lower price. It’s not worth paying 50 dollars or 15 per DLC pack if I don’t want to play the MP anymore, so why can’t you guys at least make a separate pack that only has the zombie stuff? This is part of the reason why I never bought the BO1 DLC too. I don’t mind not giving you guys my money and all, but this could be a quick buck for you guys if done right, because I’m positive that there are other people who feel the same way as I do.

ok to Mr. Amrich,
thank you for taking the time to respond to some of these ridiculous questions. For anyone that has never worked in retail customer service is one of the most tiring jobs a person can have. Customers of any product will find any reason to complain for paying for a product that they could of course do so much better themselves. As for DLC, it is actually necessary to make sure the company that made the game can continue to provide income for its employees, because personally no matter the job I would wanna get paid as well.
PSN
you get a free service…. pretty much end of story. anyone with a xbox pays up to 60 bucks a year and thats why they get exclusive deals(Microsoft is willing to pay to keep people paying) and honestly if you were the CEO (now be honest no lies here) would you turn down that much money for your company that is getting hit just like any other in these hard times. I wouldn’t, that’s for sure. So technically xbox users pay 60$ for game 60$ for good servers(may not be great but better than PSN) and then the 50$ for the season pass or 60$ again if they buy it out right. Free service equals less money in PSN’s pockets which means that much less money brought to table for deals.

These “games” are mostly flash with no substance. You just aim crosshairs at things and shoot and use grenades. Hey Dan,

Firstly, I’d like to say Treyarch and Activision have done a great job this year with Call of Duty: Black Ops II. There is a ton of new content and innovation, from the great story, to the perfected pick 10 system of multiplayer. I don’t think enough credit has been given to the developers, and even the DLC pack Revolution looks “meatier” than ever, which is what fans have asked for.

However, Black Ops II doesn’t come without problems. The most notable game breaking problems that I have experienced is that the sound will cut out randomly, and make a “buzzing” sound of sorts, and that randomly the game will freeze, requiring a corrupted data check once rebooted. I notice these problems mostly happen when playing Zombies.

Does Treyarch actually have a PS3 debugging team? In all the developer videos, they are always using Xbox 360’s. It leaves me and probably many others wondering if Treyarch is aware of these PS3 specific problems, and is working on patching them.

Thanks
