PlayStation Evolution: The Beginning

PlayStation’s arrival to the world of gaming signaled a change in the status quo and a sign of things to come. The original PlayStation system emerged in 1994 in Japan as a dark horse challenger, a seemingly outgunned newcomer entering a crowded field dominated by legends of the 16-bit era. PlayStation’s advanced technology and innovative controller design won raves with critics and gamers, and in 1995, the system expanded to North America, Europe, and Australia. Accompanied by a powerful salvo of titles including WipEout, Crash Bandicoot, and Gran Turismo, PlayStation’s rapid rise marked the end of one era of videogames and the dawn of another. The world was never the same.

but if i dont do good in my exams my mum wont buy it and i wont have it

  • Aw, man, I thought today was the 20th. The holiday threw me off. Whatever it is, I’ll immediately pre-order because every Sony product I’ve ever had has been great.

  • R.I.P, Dr. Buss. Condolences to all of my fellow Laker fans.

  • ONE. MORE. DAY.

  • @ omega_alpha-619

So, the way you refute my points is to call me a troll and run away? Good job. Automatic fail.

Yeah, you just go ahead and keep gobbling up all the pseudo-intellectual nonsense out there that parades itself as real knowledge, while ignoring the wisdom that comes from actual experience.

Don’t worry, I’ll surely remember that you’re not capable of having an intelligent debate in the future.

  • I’ve had a Playstation X, Playstation 2, (good memories) and I currently own a Playstation3. Apart of me isn’t ready for a new console iteration in the Sony line but the other side of me is so thrilled!! Can you believe it guys?! A Playstation 4!! EEE!!
Please Sony. did what you did all of those years ago with the Playstation X and the PS2.

  • @ omega_alpha-619

The PS3 is Sony’s current flagship gaming device. It’s active, popular, widespread, and plans to further develop it’s influence on the entertainment industry stretch far into the future. To call it “obsolete” is absurd.

It’s a FACT that the evolution of technology is, as I already stated, fueled by discovery (research and experimentation), and imagination (creativity). These are the truly indisputable facts, not that pseudo-intellectual nonsense you spouted. It would be the shock of the century if you could prove this wrong. Do you think technology just falls out of the sky? It’s entirely in the hands of people. The advancement of technology is always limited by the potential of it’s handlers. It is also propelled by the potential of it’s handlers. It goes where those involved say it goes. It doesn’t rely upon some magical theory that came from someone’s rectum. Get an education, son. A real world education. Not that phony pseudo stuff.

  • @omega_alpha-619

You must be misunderstanding “Moore’s law” completely. Like anything else, the point behind what Moore was saying has been clouded by wanna-be geniuses who jump on the bandwagon of pseudo-intellect to appear smarter than they are in an attempt to gain leverage in their particular field of study. Just like anything else that is handed down through generations, the original message becomes murky, and eventually, impossible to detect. Religious and cultural customs are a perfect example of this, but it happens in realms such as academia as well. The ego is mankind’s Achilles’ heel; our own worst enemy.

If it was possible to extend the advancement of technology at a rate faster than Moore’s projections, he would have been proven wrong. He appears to be correct simply because his theory is based upon his inside knowledge of the industry’s plans (which came from eye-witness experience) for the release of technology for general consumption, which has forever been moderated by the all-encompassing “hidden hand” that has guided society since the Babylonian empire.

  • @ IceStar10

But how long will the PS4 last? Hmm? Just think about that for a while…

And like I said, games (software) always run best on the original hardware they were designed for.

I guess only the most financially well-off among us can afford to do this, but the best thing to do if you care so much about preserving the classics in their original form would be to just buy multiple units of every console at various points of it’s life cycle, and store them away, only using one at a time and only replacing them when the one in use eventually reaches a state of “broken beyond repair”. Also, of course, just taking good care of your stuff (like I do) will greatly extend the life of your devices. Don’t forget to do that… and you’ll be enjoying your favorite games for a long time to come.

  • @ 209 (PrimeroIncognito)

What I meant was “how long would my PS3 last?”.

I am on my second PS3 because my first PS3 got the YLOD (yellow light of death) I have already spent $750 dollars plus tax for 2 PS3’s this generation and I am not so sure if I want to buy a third PS3 as back up. Plus, I want fewer systems hooked up to my TV because there are multiple devices already hooked up. Having fewer devices is better than having 2.

The reason why I suggest an optional add-on for backwards compatibility is because it keeps the cost of the PS4 low and those who want it can pay extra for it. Having the add-on with the necessary chips can enable most PS3 games to run with out problem. I don’t think asking for an optional add-on is too much to ask. Sony did patent it so why can’t they release it?

  • I can’t to see what they have to show us !!!

  • I wonder what games they will show with the PS4.

  • Sony have mercy on us! our hype meter gonna explode!

  • Suddenly it’s feeling so painful to wait on Wed. x.x

  • @ Icestar10

Don’t worry… those new slim PS3s will be around for a while, and eventually the price will drop to at or around $99 just like all the previous consoles. It’s inevitable.

As far as the patented accessories are concerned, you must realize that just because something is patented, it doesn’t also mean that is has been manufactured, or will be in the future. It is a common practice among many companies, especially tech companies, to patent any and all versions of ideas of potential optional add-ons or improvements to their products as a way of discouraging other companies from piggy-backing on their success and making profits for themselves from products that they had no original involvement with. And they have every right to block that from happening too. Imagine yourself in the shoes of an inventor, who suddenly draws the attention of a slew of greedy opportunists who want to profit from your work, without giving you a cut. You probably wouldn’t like it, right?

  • If they were going to announce a Playstation 4, I think instead of calling it Playstation 4, they should name it Playstation Legend.

Maybe they could call it Playstation Nexus?

Have BC and more than two usb slots, Have a choice of a top loader. Have more than 256 MB of RAM, a better internet browser. Also STOP ASKING ME TO USE THE PLUG-IN TO WATCH A VIDEO!

I don’t want to spend 600 bucks like I did on the first PS3. I hope they make it available on release day. I had to wait until December to get my first, which was a month later. I think they need to keep the price at the 300 dollar range. It is pointless to have the price so bloody high, just to later reduce the price!

  • I cant be excited until I know more about the PS4. Sorry to say it, but I am a older gamer who has been playing games over 25 years. The market has turned for the worse over the years.

It will be interesting to see if it features backward compatibility, better vita support (remote play) (still waiting for the vita to get moving, been very slow)

If used games are somehow blocked……. not sure yet but probably wont bother.

Don’t get me wrong, I always buy new unless it was a older game that is no longer released. (Heavenly Sword, etc…) But If I buy something, I can sell it to. Free Market….

I just wished you fixed the PS3? Backwards compatibility should have been included for PS2. I had a old 80 gig and the emulator on that PS3 is the same as the newer PS3’s. Instead of letting the end user have the PS2 function, they bundle it in the game you download off the PSN (money grab)

  • So all those PS2 games they sell just come packaged with the emulator built into the download.

Sony will fail if they expect people to keep buying the same game over and over. Might be time to upgrade to PC Gaming

  • now if only you guys could evolve in to updating the psn before 9pm on a weekly basis that would be great.

  • if it doesnt play ps3 games i wont be bothering with it for a long time

  • @captainradical ikr, im sick of waiting all damn day for one thing i want, it needs to drop at midnight

  • @ bakerarmy

“all those PS2 games they sell just come packaged with the emulator built into the download.”

Are you sure this is true? I’ve heard this rumor before, but from what I’ve gleaned from tech-savvy individuals, as well as the “official” word, they claim that the code is being re-structured to work on a PS3. Even Morgan posted here once that the PS2 Classics have their code re-worked to run on a PS3. They are recognized by the PS3 as a PS3 game, and that they are NOT being emulated.

If you have any proof of what you claim, I’d love to see it.

  • @ TWODEEEE

Then just keep your PS3. Problem solved.

  • Funny thing about the PS2 Classics though…

A lot of you guys claim Sony is being greedy by removing BC from the PS3, and selling PS2 Classics through the store to get more money, but so far, I’d estimate that 90% of all PS2 Classics released in the store have been extremely obscure titles that most people probably never had on disc during the last gen. In fact, you probably HADN’T EVEN HEARD OF some of those games before! Right?

The rest of them are extremely popular games that most people don’t mind paying $10 for again (such as Rockstar’s library). So, what’s the problem?

  • A little over two hours till Wednesday and still no PSN update.

  • I think the big 2/20 6PM (EST) surprise is going to be the Tuesday PSN Store update.

  • kinda lame for you to invite all those people to new york just to show them your late psn update

  • Screw the 2/20 event just give me the freaking store update please. I have stuff I need to buy.

  • IS THIS ARTICLE FROM KATOKU & OTHER SITES LEGIT?? http://kotaku.com/5985356/source-the-ps4-will-be-out-this-november-and-youll-be-able-to-control-it-with-your-phone?tag=ps4

•The PlayStation 4 will be out this November in the US
Here’s what the source suggests that, on top of all that, you’ll also be able to:
    – control the PS4 remotely from your tablet or smartphone.
    – You’ll be able to use a mobile device to chat with your PS4 friends or buy games which are then automatically downloaded to your machine.
•Pricing won’t be announced until later this year, but the current plan is to release two versions at $429 and $529. This may change. No details on what is different, but presumably it’s the HDD size.
•You will be able to control the PS4 remotely from your tablet or smartphone, this includes using the mobile to chat with your PS4 buddies or buy games which are then automatically downloaded to your PS4

•“Most” of the PS4′s online features will require a premium subscription to use, and this new premium online service will be called PlayStation World. It will replace PlayStation Plus.
•Every PS4 will come with a PlayStation Eye. No word on how much better this camera will be to the current one.
•A new spectating feature will let you watch other friends play games from your PS4′s dashboard. You don’t have to own their games to watch.
•The PS4 will support local network play via Vita. – Rumored next-gen controller:

According to Edge Mag, the PS4 will inherently record and save “the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action,” which you can then edit and share using the console’s sharing function.
