DUALSHOCK 4 Revealed: Pushing the Boundaries of Play

Hi Everyone! It’s a special day at PlayStation, and I hope all of you had a chance to watch the livestream of PlayStation Meeting 2013 in New York, where we just unveiled PlayStation 4. One of the most exciting components of our next-generation platform is DUALSHOCK 4, the new wireless controller that combines with PlayStation 4 to deliver new gameplay experiences that have never been possible before.

DUALSHOCK 4

I’d like to give you a tour of DUALSHOCK 4 and the features that will provide game developers the freedom to create brand new experiences that previously were limited to their imaginations.

Design

DUALSHOCK 4 adopts the familiar form factor of the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller with some key enhancements:

  • Motion control is enabled by a new highly sensitive six-axis sensor
  • Dual analog sticks fine-tuned for better precision plus improved surface materials and shape for more delicate manipulation
  • L2/R2 buttons on the top of the controller employ a curved design for easier, smoother interaction
  • A new “Options” button combines the functions of the DUALSHOCK 3’s “Select” and “Start” buttons for operating in-game menus

New Ways to Play, Share and Connect

In addition to these features that build on the controls that you already know, DUALSHOCK 4 offers new features that enable new ways to play, a key part of the PS4 experience. One of the biggest innovations we’ve designed centers on the deep social interactions that will surround all games on PS4.

DUALSHOCK 4

The “Share” button allows you to easily broadcast your gameplay in real-time through streaming sites such as Ustream, where fellow gamers can comment and even join your game in new ways. For example, if you’re stuck in a difficult level, your friends can offer health potions or special weapons that you can use during gameplay. You can also instantly upload images or video to Facebook by pressing the “Share” button. As both a developer and a gamer, I’m personally excited about the opportunity to get help from friends when facing a challenge, and I can’t wait to see what my friends are playing in real time along with videos of their favorite in-game moments.

On the front side of DUALSHOCK 4 is a light bar with LED that illuminate in various colors to match the color of the character in a game as a simple way to identify players. The colors can also provide useful information to players, such as when their character has taken damage during a game. DUALSHOCK 4 was developed alongside a second peripheral, a dual camera which can sense the depth of the environment in front of it and also track the 3D location of the controller via its light bar. The new camera incorporates four microphones capable of accurate sound detection and source origination, and it will support the PlayStation Move motion controller with more precision than ever before.

DUALSHOCK 4 also has a touchpad at the front of the controller as a new input method, offering more ways to interact with games. Additionally there’s a built-in speaker and headset jack to deliver high-fidelity sound effects from the games. A headset will be bundled with PS4, enabling gamers to chat with friends during online gaming and to hear sound effects from the controller.

There’s a lot built into DUALSHOCK 4, and the features were all thoughtfully designed with input from the development community (both our internal studios and third parties) and PlayStation gamers. Our goal was to give game creators an open canvas to express their ideas, and DUALSHOCK 4 combined with DUALSHOCK 4 will help us achieve the future of gaming that we at PlayStation see ahead of us.

What do you think? What’s your favorite new feature for DUALSHOCK 4?

  • I didnt like this controller because its the same .. and why not to add an LCD screen on the middle instead of a PAD its useless cause a console controller has buttons. I wish the first prototype for the PS3 instead

  • Love it ;-)

  • When I first saw one of the leaked images, I didn’t know what to think. It looked chunky and hard to hold. Now I’m looking at it a little more closely here and it seems really good. Like they took everything that was good about the classic Dualshock and added some slight yet major updates to it that are very much welcome.

  • What can I say, I really like the new design of the dualshock. Thanks for not making too much drastic changes.
    – the placement of the share/ pause buttons look great. not in the way and looks easy to access.
    – I have a Vita and the touch pad look exacty as the rear touchpad. I think I already know how it will be used. LBP/ Uncharted/ Jetpack Joyride/ Ninja Gaiden Sigma have already put it to use.
    – The social media interaction looks interesting also, I like that sony is creating a system with games+developers+sharing+power+future all wrappen into one.
And naming the console Playstation 4 is also genius. everyone will know that this a new console and this should creat a huge buzz at launch……As always, Keep on Gaming.

  • the design is great but WHY didn’t show Sony the most important thing of PS4 – it’s the console himself that you should show at a press conference ????

  • I think that this controller looks awesome, I can’t wait what you can do with the new features in game play.
I don’t understand why very few people don’t like the new design.

  • Will the dualshock 4 work on ps3?
And will the new Camera accessory work on the ps3?
I can’t wait for all of this to come out!

  • SOUNDS GOOD…But to be honest with Sony I think its bad timing because there still people who just now settling with a new ps3 they just came out with the 500gb slimmer ps3..And I was woundering will the PS4 be able to play ps3 games because if not im scared Sony is going to lose alot of customers…IM A BIG FAN OF SONY ENTERTAINMENT.. and I would hate to see that happen. and the last thing I would love to know is the price range so I could try and put money to the side.

  • I like the redesign of the dual analog sticks and trigger buttons. I wasn’t expecting to see the actual console or price since that seems like more of an E3 announcement especially if Microsoft introduces the new XBOX at the same time.

As for the Vita…I knew that device was going to used with the PS4 so now I’m just waiting for my $100 gift card for GameStop and I will buy one.

  • Me Gusta

  • IS IT WIRELESS? If it is, I sure hope the battery life is improved because the PS3 wireless Duel Shock battery life SUCKS.

  • SONY please come up with a very reasonable price…because your doing good with ps3 and people are still buying them and if you come out with the ps4 now while people is still enjoying there ps3 then there will be no reason to get the ps4 unless you have a reasonable price…AND Please allow the ps4 to play ps3 games and use ps3 controllers

  • I wonder what colors will be available for the systems and controllers on launch day? Hopefully, there will be more than one.

  • do away with the move motion controller … why can’t it be like 360’s kinect,, hands free.

  • can’t wait to play DriveClub that game looks insane.

the controller is an interesting device all its own touchpad microphone jack its wireless and a share and options button including rumble function but that’s not all the interesting bit is the PSmove globe light on the top of the controller so everything is pretty much in your hand without all different types of controllers and PSmove devices lying around i totally love the idea.

Playstation 4 coming Christmas 2013 OMG!! really.
there’s so many possibility for games on PS4.
can we break down a few.
    Minecraft
LittleBigPlanet in 3D or in real world
diablo 3 cross play with PC
Gran Turismo 6 broadcast your race from anywhere pick the car and if you have a co-driver let him race while your out at the park playing baseball with the kids.
    Project CARS
Driveclub send a post to all your friends on Facebook on what times and days you have races available or challenges they can compete in.

    so many ideas is (ENDLESS)

  • PlayStation 4 & PlayStation VITA Launch Bundle!!

  • I love it it’s so creative and i like how you all put the share button on the remote. I’ma have fun with this when December comes. Thanks Sony and Playstation.

  • I see people saying that they can’t think of ways to use the touch pad. Here a couple things just off the top of my head. slide to unlock, pinch zoom, volume control, maybe fluid crouch/prone instead of 3 point stand crouch prone, spell casting? IDK i don’t really play those types of games, but maybe have symbols you draw on the pad to do certain actions. It seems like the possibilities are pretty endless.

  • The Playstation Logo IS on the DUALSHOCK 4. It’s on the Home Button (Is that what It’s called?). There’s no need to have 2 PS Logos now is there?

  • Controller is awesome all around. But I think what would make it stellar, and I know this is wishful thinking, is if the touch pad was also a screen that could project dynamic buttons to use in games. Boom!

  • IS THIS CONTROLLER SUPPORT HOT/COLD HANDLES?????

  • Look really amazing, looking forward to, would like to see how the console look like now.

  • i love this controller looks fantastic i hope the smooth and comfort and battery life of this new version of dualshock have been really improved congratulations sony thanks for this top of the class gaming experience

  • I hope this is just like a prototype, dualshock is the best thing ever!

  • Thank You for the awesome conference. Im already saving for the ps4 and the vita. PlayStation

  • Love the new triggers, thanks for listening!! And please make the headset like the old Xbox 1 headset, that was the best EVER and a big reason Xbox Live took off like it did on Xbox 1.

  • around how much is it gonna be?

  • the biggest problem i can see with the controller is that once again the entire weight of the controller rests on the r2 and l2 buttons which means faster breakdown of the sensitivity of those buttons from constantly being pressed also am i the only one who hates setting the controller down and throwing a grenade because the r2 button got pressed because it rests on the r2 button?

  • Ps4 is going to be bonerific

  • @inuyasha_523 Haha funny you say that because every time my dog squeezes between me and the coffee table i throw a grenade XD

  • this looks sweet, I just wonder how much the PS4 is gonna cost when it comes out lol. XD

  • “…DUALSHOCK 4 combined with DUALSHOCK 4 will help us achieve the future of gaming…”
    LOL

  • To whom it may concern:

I’m a little confused by the announcement Is the Ps4 going to be able to use Ps3 format games and accessories? If so will it only be digital downloads or both? I’m extremely excited about the announcement
but very curious as to what will happen with my collection of games and accessories. Sony I can’t wait for pre-orders for the console to begin, can’t wait on a reply.

    Thank you.

  • I am really excited about new DUALSHOCK 4 and GAIKAI technology

  • Everyone complaining about the share button saying “I just want to play games”: You don’t have to use the share button. You CAN just play your games.

On topic: Love the new controller, can’t wait to see what the touchscreen will be used for.

  • How do I highlight enemies on Battlefield now without a select button?
I’m all for the pad…but some games do make use of said missing buttons~

  • They didn’t show the PS4 in the even because it is not done being designed. Just be patient people. & I really can’t wait for the PS4! The controller features are incredibly amazing! I just don’t like the touch pad in the center. I basically don’t like the layout of the controller. I think they should re-design the controller. Keep all the features it has but get rid of the touch pad & re-design it. Other than that, the PS4 is must buy for me! Can’t wait! :)

  • This looks like rubbish with another form of kinect. I hate how gimmicks like this get people excited for nothing open your eyes people.

  • The controller is hot, I’m in love. I now can’t wait til the PS4 comes out.

  • and one more thing I don’t need Smart Glass again either. It seems like the same bull these Sony heads talk about M$ conference Sony just did it to you guys just now. Also Sony thanks for giving me the Wii U approach and just showing the controller.

  • Love the controller. You just can’t beat the Dualshock design. This is exactly what I wanted in a controller for PS4 just some refinement

  • sexy

  • (1) the ps4 release is more than 9 months away, why would you show all your cards this early. Create buzz and continue to release little chunks of info until the release date.
    (2) we still have E3 + TGS & CES. So my my guess is, we will see the new Playstation 4 design at E3.
    (3) The big boys will come out and play at E3. Playable Demos of Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Killzone, New Jak & Daxter, The Last Guardian, New Ratchet & Clank game and a hefty playable demo of Drive Club.
    (4) TGS will see a massive Metal Gear Solid reveal and possible demo.
    As always, Keep on Gaming.

  • The share button was the best idea since sliced bread! I can’t wait!

The touch pad will most likely be for things like moving your head in a cut scene, picking up weapons, bringing up a map, or something simple.

I wonder what the “Options” button is for? Well, really, that was a rhetorical question!

  • Also, for games like Battlefield, maybe the touch pad could be used for better targeting/commands like the ones on PC.

  • I really like the new look of the controller it looks more stylish and it looks like it is easier to hold in your hands. Also the joystick’s looks like they are better designed lets hope to see more in the coming months.

  • im wondering about the camera with the controller will this new playstation eye have voice recognation or gesture function?

  • I don’t like the controller, to much going on. I like the dualshock 3 controllers.
