Knack – A Brand New Platformer for PlayStation 4

It was a great pleasure to be able to introduce the title at the PlayStation Meeting in New York. With our new project, Knack, we are really trying to take advantage of everything that the PlayStation 4 supports, from the graphics capabilities of the platform to the physics simulation necessary to handle our very unique hero. Over the years I’ve been involved in a number of character-based action titles – Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank – and with the gameplay of Knack, we’re trying to focus on the essential fun behind the action/platform gameplay. I’m hoping that we can make something that excites those that played the classic games back in the day, as well as something that attracts new fans to the genre.

Knack

I’m sure you saw a lot of things in the trailer and might be wondering what exactly the game is all about.

The Doctor (a not-so-mad scientist) studied ancient relics from a long lost civilization for many years, and finally found a way to bind them together and give them consciousness. The result is Knack, a creature with mysterious powers – for one, he can incorporate more relics into his body as he finds them, which allows him to transform from a three-foot tall creature into a gigantic wrecking machine.

Knack

During the game Knack also discovers that he has a skill (in other words, a knack!) that allows him to incorporate ice, metal and other substances into his body, giving him new abilities from level to level. The result is gameplay which is a little bit like Crash Bandicoot, and a little bit like Katamari Damacy, in that the Knack can get quite large indeed. There’s also a touch of God of War in there, in that there is an epic feel to the game in places.

Knack

As for the story, mankind is threatened by a resurgent goblin army and Knack steps forward to protect them – until it becomes clear that an even greater danger is posed by elements of the human community.

Knack

Right now we’re hard at work on the game and developing for PlayStation 4. It has been an incredible opportunity to contribute this early on to what’s shaping up to be a very interesting year for the industry. This is just a small taste of what’s in store and you’ll be hearing more about Knack and how it plays on PS4 very soon.

  • Being an SCEJ game, I hope it’s marketed towards the Japanese market. Sony only has GT game in its 1st party portfolio that’s a system seller in Japan and they need more. SCEJ needs to start producing like SCEA and SCEE.

  • Thanks for sharing, Mr. Cerny. Your game looks awesome and the little boy inside this 26 y.o. gamer greatly appreciates it. Looking forward to it. It’s undeniably charming and gorgeous.

  • Knack will be my next hero platformer Character, Jack, Ratchet, Sly have a new buddy, welcome to the playstation platformer characters family Knack.

  • Thank you so much, Mr. Cerny, for coming up with another PlayStation exclusive platformer. I’ve been a huge fan of your work since the Crash and Spyro days, and Knack looks really promising! I wish you the best of luck working on this new project and leading the PS4’s development.

  • Oh, and Knack’s face kinda reminds me of Crash. Was this done on purpose? :D

  • Mr. Cerny, your intro music was perfect. I’m a real fan of your work and I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

  • As a huge fan of whimsical action platformers, I was ecstatic to see something like Knack still being developed for the PS4. I can’t wait to learn more about the characters particle physics, gameplay, and how the two intertwine.

  • Looks really great, hopefully it’ll be a launch title!

  • Looks awesome! Seems to have that fun R&C, Spryo, Sly and Jak vibe.
Glad to see you are lead architect on the PS4! Really hope there is a big focus on developers. Hopefully lessons have been learned from Steam and iOS, in terms of ease of publishing, low costs, direct connections to customers and ease of updating.
Please have a variable pricing structure. Lets have games from FTP all the way to $60.

  • I am buying Knack just because it was the first game announced and shown for the ps4.

  • If I could trade in my PS3 to get this new system, I would do it.

  • This is probably my favorite thing shown for PS4. This and what Media Molecule is working on.

Looks amazing, and I hope that Sony and Insomniac eventually get another Ratchet and Clank trilogy on PS4, because this game looks amazing visually and R&C looked amazing on PS3. I can’t imagine how incredible it would be on PS4.

  • Will there be a true Vita version or can we only play it thru Remote Play with a PS4? I really hope it’s the former!

  • Really looking forward to this title. It’s nice to see new IPs!

  • Anyone else notice the Dead Space helmet on an enemy ?

  • This is the game I’m most looking forward to. But that gameplay on the Vita was uuuuugh.. :( :( It was partly the low frame rate and small screen though probably from the game streaming. The gameplay didn’t look entirely inspired either but I have no doubt it will be a good game.. however will it be an outstanding game?.. Can’t tell yet. I need to see more innovative gameplay to start to get really excited for this.
Also were those cutscenes in real time?? They were gorgeous!

  • What a great mix of PS4 games shown at Playstation Meeting 2013. Great presentation, Knack looks like it will be a lot of fun!

  • I’m always in for new platformers! Although this being a PS4 game, doesn’t really look graphically different than Ratchet & Clank or Puppeteer. I’m interested though!

    Great job presenting/designing the PS4!

  • YES! A new platformer, I will defo get this.

  • Mark Cerny also worked on Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sonic.

Knack reminds me of those 90’s mascot platformers. I hope Sony can turn the Knack franchise into a big hit like they did with those games. With all the FPS and racing games out these days, gaming could use some diversity.

  • Looks very interesting, cant wait to see more! XD

  • cant wait for ps4!!!!!

  • Only PS4 game I’m interested in right now. Won’t make me buy this on launch, though. I want a Naughty Dog title.

  • Great presentation.. I was glad you went into specs. And so glad you guys made this easy to develop for. This conference had a feel to of a new gen of gaming and I am so glad of that.

As for Knack… it looks great. As a 34 year old it still holds my attention like crash and ratchet , sly and jak have before. Thats saying something for games made that appeal to all ages. Its good to have variety! Keep up the good work..

  • Mr. Cerny,

I just wanted to say I was not only very impressed by your portion of the show but I was also very very happy to see you on stage for the first time. I’m an older gamer, I’ve been playing games you have had a hand in crafting over the last 29 years. Couldn’t tell you how much time I burnt playing Marble Madness or Missile Defense back in the day!

Great seeing ya up there, and I’m looking to rocking out playing Knack with my son!

  • It had to be Japan studio of course…the creativity of you guys knows no bounds…this game looks fantastic…looks like a 3D animation from DreamWorks…I’m against PS4 launch but I’m looking forward to this game.

  • This does look really cool, and the number of polys+particles really shows off the hardware capabilities. I just hope there’s a story with an emotional pull underneath the glitz and fun.

I could never get into Ratchet & Clank, as “coin collecting” and hidden collectible mechanics just aren’t intrinsically fun for me. I like the idea of collecting things that become part of you, a la Noby Noby Boy.

I especially liked the brief puzzles shown where you need to shrink as well as grow. Some sixaxis gestures, like slamming the controller downward to “go flat” or turning it sideways to “go vertical” would be neat things for puzzles/boss fights as well.

  • Finally, a new platformer! I think Platformers need to make a come back on the PS4. Will we ever get a new Jak an d Daxter game?

  • Looks great, can’t wait to see more.

  • Reviews are really going to make or break this game. Look at what all the good reviews for LBP did for it’s sales. If this game comes out and gets scores in the 9+ range, I could see it becoming pretty popular

  • Just to let you know that NeoGaf is in love with Knack! I can’t wait to play this on my new shiny PS4. Thank you Mark for this awesome looking game. And thank you for helping to create the PS4 I love it. Also Sony should let you do more presentation, you were great at the event! ^.^

  • The more I see this game the more I want it. Can’t wait for this!

  • @30: reviews will probably be stupid for a lot of early next gen games. I predict a lot of “Why is this “next gen” hurr durr 3/10″ reviews.

  • @27: wut… R&C isn’t coin collecting and it does have some hidden collectibles, which are completely optional. The stories are fantastic, so I don’t know what you’re on. And the Future trilogy has the best story of the series, particularly A Crack in Time. Total emotional pull in the trilogy when you’ve been with the two for so long.

  • Will we still have free online for ps4? Some say we wont, please tell me it untrue.

  • I will buy this game day one.
