I think it should have the ability to play all the PlayStation games from the PlayStation 1 games to the PlayStation 4 games
@#1 i have been sony/ps gamer longer than you and while i dont agree with alot of things sony playstation do. One they are doing right is protecting their investments and gamers. For you to sit and say B/c is only aspect of purchase.. little do you know the president of sony is on record saying alot of ps3 and ps2 and psp will be easy to access day one to purchase online. if you already have them online, no need to worry you willbe able to play them.
I find what you say laughable at best becuase you cant buy loyalty, my pruchases to them dont.they should be loyal to me or vise versa.. this is buisness.. if understand wha tbuisness is about then understand pc nevr gave you any saving. when last time they gave you a free update of your hardware for 16yrs to play a certain game? it will nevr happen, you willspend 500$ just toplay a new game. I have been playing offline games for over 40 yrs my friend and Im older than 40, online is bonus to me. It wont hinder my purchase of ps4.

I don’t understand people talking about the backwards compatibility. As far as I know their PS3s are not going to vanish the instant they buy a PS4, are they?
I personally don’t care about backwards compatibility at all. IMO, all the effort that Sony could spend on backwards compatibility should be used to improve the next-gen experience. And if demand for PS3’s keeps up, well, then, just keep producing and selling PS3s for as long as its profitable.
I have no problem at all with keeping my PS3 connected to my TV if I decide to play old games.
Day one buy for me. The PS4 blew my expectations so far, and most likely to do so at E3. For me backwards compatibility doesn’t matter, as I’m gonna buy the PS4 to play PS4 games. When I have the urge to play PS3/PS1, I’ll just plug in the PS3, and I’ll just plug in the PS2 when I want to play PS2 games. I say just keep your systems, simple as that. Sony, keep up the good work :).

@52 mcbuttz78, Mr. Shuhei Yoshida (the guy that posted this article) has gone on record saying everything you bought on PSN will NOT work on PS4. Meaning You bought content? Oh well if you want to use it on PS4 you have to buy it again. Have all the DLC for the games you will be “streaming”? Nope sorry.

The one part of the entire presentation that bother me and gave me shivers is the usage of your real name on the PSN. Why? I like to keep my anonymity to the highest level possible. There are plenty of scoundrels out there looking at a way to steal people’s identities.I also try to limit the amount of pictures and info of myself online.
I might sound a bit paranoid but, these days you have to protect your identity and Sony has to be committed to protect their customers identity as well. We all know what happened to the PSN. Unfortunately, one of the side effects that social networks have opened, is a huge black market of committed to steal your identity and commit fraud in your name. If Sony lets people select a level of anonymity they wish from none to full then, I’m OK If you guys want to broadcast to everyone when they out of the house playing on your Vita then go ahead. I would like it not to do so. If not, then I will probably have to pass on PS4. It is a big deal breaker.
what I want to know is A. if it will be backwards compatable?, B. Will it have the audio/video chat like ps3 does? C. Would my controllers at least be compatable with it? and D. How much will it cost?
Sony really needs to let us bring our PSN purchases over. They said in the past they want us to feel about DLC games as we do physical retail releases. To have all of our past purchases be unplayable on the PS4 will make a lost of players regret investing so much into DLC.
Weather it be by cloud streaming or actual B/C via emulation I hope they understand how much it means to players.
From what I can tell true PS3 emulation is for the most part impossible with the PS4 utilizing the X86 platform.
PSX, PS2, and some PSN, MINI’s should be emulated pretty easily though, and the rest could be made available via Gaikai streaming.

Day one purchase, and #32 is spot on. Glad someone know what the hell they’re talking about, unlike all you agreeing with #1 who are judging the capability of a system based on a low definition internet stream.
Most games now are 720p @ 30FPS if we’re lucky, and full of jaggies. Sometimes even lower than 720p. You don’t think true 1080p @ 60FPS and 8X AA will be revolutionary? Not to mention the 3D enhancements after 7 years of 3D chip improvements. Jeezus, do you guys even have HDTVs?
The no PS3 backwards-compatibility especially with all the PSN downloads I’ve purchase over the years may be an early deal breaker for me. I’m going to have to buy up and keep a personal stock of PS3s in preparation for its discontinuation in a few years.
I’ll wait for the second or third round of price drops and when I get faster FIOS Internet for streaming games to jump into the next gen. At this rate, it probably won’t be until they announce the PS5.
If the ps4 doesn’t read my ps3 games. I guess this is going to be a low percent on me buying it. Im really dissapointed with Sony.
God damn you sony! Make cloud gaming an option not everyone likes digital.. I prefer physical copys its bad enough the system isnt backwards compatible but unless your putting at least a 500gb hd stock then this is going to be bull.. I can see it now all digital titles means longer weekly updates, scarce price drops, huge files to download.. your making it hard for me to want to be an early adapter for this system. Then what games will probably be 80 bucks a pop. And early adapters will be punched in the balls when they release a new improved ps4 model much like how you will be releasing a new vita with an hdmi output. This system was built with money in mind not gamers or your loyal customers. Not happy
This looks amazing. I love the PS3 and will likely get the PS4 but not on launch day. Sorry Sony but I’m waiting for the bugs to be fixed while sticking to my PS3/PC setup. I hope that you understand but even if I can afford something, I don’t want to jump into buying something that hasn’t been tested by my peers if I don’t have to.
This can’t be said about many others, but Backwards Compatibility has never been an important issue for me. I purchased this new console to play new games, if I wanted to play old games I’d boot up the console I purchased it for, but to many it’s nice to have this feature so they don’t have to go back and forth between consoles I suppose *shrugs*. Ohh well, I’m keeping my PS3, and saving up to buy a PS4 this year.
Lol @ SpyStation 4 comments. The option to turn off these so called “Spy” features I’m sure exists. Plus they stated during the event that you can use your real name IF you allow it in which case only your friends would see, if not then you’ll be using your username, notice during the presentation, it showed the guys actual name and below it, his username “DayZ100”.
The only thing I want to carry over from PS3 is… My trophies.
It’d be cool to let PS4 users see what trophies I earned during my time with the PS3.
Backwards compatibility hits you later down the road when they discontinue the old hardware you’re using and replacements become hard to find. There’s always ebay but I’ve been scammed by used system sellers there before too, and they’ll no doubt jack the price up when demand is higher than supply.
It’s just nice not having to buy the same games over again with BC. If they want to turn games into some type of disposable commodity then at least lower their prices.
@67 You do realize that Sony posted up the specs of the PS4 and it was said that it supports both digital and physical disc games.

Also if all of you are still wondering about the whole “used games” fiasco, you can put yourselves at ease. Sony Worlwide Studious Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer that the PS4 will NOT block used games, so that means you can still borrow, lend, rent, etc. with games on the next generation console.
As for Backwards Compatibility, Sony plans to use the Gaikai service as a means to access PS3 games. (It may even be possible that they might be able to put all your PSN digital downloads such as add-ons, full games, and more on a Gaikai server for the PS4 to access the content.)
Since the PS3’s PS Plus service allows you upload your savedata on a cloud service, it might even be possible to carry over PS3 savedata over to the Gaikai servers that will be loading up your PS3 games.
They have the tech to make backwards compatibility a reality (via Gaikai), but really, they will make more money
by trying to sell us the same games we already own. Sad, but true.
I will not be buying the PS4 right away. I’ll wait to see if they support the $1000 worth of PSN releases I just bought and my 4 years Plus account.
the ps4 might be good but it may stell fail if but if thay make it able to play ps3 a lot well not by it thay can make it like $150 to make it play ps3 game as well thay well make more people happy
I’m not buying a PS4 to play PS3 games, but it still would be nice if it was possible. Not worth $200, but if it’s possible, I’d like it to be able to read your old trophy collection and offer you the old games for free if you choose.
Almost all of the people complaining that the PS4 is no large step like to forget the way upgraded specs. Those new graphics seen shmexy, and all that RAM… if you dont want to share things, dont, but thats no reason to skip it all.
im highly upset. im totally ready for the new PS4 but as we all know the firs-gen consoles always have some issues, so the first wave is just a test run yes its gonnabe fun an exciting but know theres gonna be that one thing that messes up and i dont want to waste my money so i’d wish they would tell us everything about it not just how good it is, and dress it up and make it look pretty I WANNA KNOW MORE… but i definitely gettin one i guess ill just wait for the sec-gen
Does this PS4 play my PS3 Games? If not then umm No I will not be purchasing this new one. Theres no since in it. Ohhh yay only thing new is u can take pics of your game play & share to your facebook. If my PS3 games dont play on it then I WILL BE STICKING TO MY PS3.
Wow really disappointed and I have Sony everything TV, ps3, vita and even a brand new laptop. I mean really who cares about the social bull crap or the dumb little 2cd screen on your controller that’s so stupid. I have always been in it for the graphics and the exclusive game content I really think they are just rushing into this for the money and I’m not buying this crap. seriously we have 3D TV’s now lets take it up a notch I really don’t give a s**t about the social networking hello I have a laptop for that and a phone I can take anywhere. I just think that they should do something more with the actual game play make it better, I want to be in the game more 3D and improve on the motion sensor stuff they need to take their time and really set a HUGE difference from the ps3 in order for them to even call it a ps4. If they are smart about this they should really take a second and listen to what we are saying forget what they want out of it and what their goals are for the ps4 we are the ones buying it LISTEN to your customers and find out what satisfies us as community then and only then you could build the next ultimate gamming device!
Man PS4 is so gonna kick xbox 720’s A. though i wish we could import some of our game data from PS3 to PS4.
I am interested, but have a couple of concerns:
1) Having to reposition the PS Eye while playing games (especially exercise games that have push-ups, crunches, etc) is extremely irritating — I hope the PS4 Eye can change its tilt via a simple (hopefully quiet) motor.
2) The sensor noise in the PS Eye was insane, making games like Wonderbook and EyePet which do digital zooming look absolutely terrible. Has sensor noise been improved dramatically at the higher frame rates?
3) The camera resolution not being 1080p like the display will mean interpolation/aliasing (or letterboxing) that will dilute the 1:1 augmented reality presentation. are both cameras 800p, or will one of them be 1080p?
4) With a sub-HD resolution camera, zooming may be necessary to fill the screen in some games. Digital zooming will exacerbate the previous issues, leading to similar interpolation/aliasing. Will the PS4 Eye have a physical zoom that games can control to mitigate some of these problems?
I am excited for the PS4 and the new Eye, but I’ll need to know that these root problems that conflict with the promise of ARG games are resolved by more than just spec upgrades.
sounds great but i hope socom gets to be on there along with kingdom hearts 3
