PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • @546 Wow, I didn’t even think of that! I’m really not sure if Sony would be able to add something like that or not. I would pay the extra $200-$400 for that easy. I agree with you on the video games, I’m hyped up for Battlefield 4

  • lol if you worried your game camera is on when you arn’t using it then just cover it with something black, problem solved.

  • I’m off to bed, add me online if you guys want. Keep rockin! Peace.

  • Yeah i really cant wait to actually get that back boy home and see how those graphics look, I have a Hd 3d smart tv i got on shobnbc it certainly wasn’t the most expensive on the market at its size and it most likely isn’t the best, so i hope it wont disappoint. If everything is to be believed about the ps4 one thing is certain, and that is that developers will have a lot of expectations to live up too, as we are going to be expecting mind blowing quality graphics which will hopefully be a part of awesome game play.

  • @550, Jays_Pet- It’s confirmed that these are the same Move controllers. Again, those are just my guesses on the bundle costs. It’s logical that within or during the launch month, the PS3 should have a perm. price drop. Possibly $200-$250 depending if they’re core systems or systems packaged w/ games.

The HD capacities for the PS4 bundles should be like that of the PS3s: 120 Gig & 300 Gig versions.

  • Are you going to give all the 2006 “Boat Anchors” with the “blinking red light of death” at least a substantial discount??? My 2006 PS3 has been sitting there doing nothing for the past six months. Glad i waited to buy a new one though…c’om help us out!!!!!

  • cant wait til the ps4 comes out

  • I have to ask: as a Battlefield 3 player (having earned game upgrades), will I be able to transfer my upgrades to the new console without having to start all over?

  • Wow O_O So… How much you hiking this monstrosity up to? :P

  • Really hope the price is right. The AMD processor will need adequate cooling. AMDs are known to melt down without proper cooling. Even still, the 8 core is a hyper thread 8 core. 4x dual core. Not as quick as a real 8 core processor that you can buy from AMD for $200. You can buy a graphics card with 3g or more DDR5 ram. The announcement of using OnLive is rather disturbing. You can already get games for your PC there. Same with Origin (EA). These games should be cheaper because you cut out a lot of the production costs. Although I doubt they will lower the prices. In my opinion, this announcement is actually pushing me more to a gaming PC than another Playstation. You can build a comparable PC for $600.

  • can ur old ps3 mic work on the ps4

  • got to say im not to impressed. looks like a bulked up ps3 tbh and the games dont look much different gon take a couple years to really see a huge change n them able to take advantage of the capabilities. I dont know i dont get all the hype i guess if ur a fan boy theres reason to be hype but im a gamer and cant really see whats so amazing about it. the social features is absurd its supposed gto be about gaming and yet here another console is(like xbox) that focuses more on interactivity instead of gameplay. come on sony

  • Wow… can’t wait!

  • how much is it?

  • I imagine myself dying when I first touch the ps4…… then coming back to life of course :3

  • You would think they learned the first time that the simple design of the dual shock controller has survived 3 console generations, this is the same situation that happened with the unveiling of the PS3 boomerang controller and yet the dual shock came back. I will not be surprised if the dualshock comes back again.

  • yeah, that touchpad on the controller seem like a major gimmick but the sound port makes me think that they plan on introducing crossgame chat like the 360 has. I don’t care about either feature, would just be happy with the traditional “Shock” controller

  • can`t wait

  • The controller looks odd~ but cool

  • Not that i don’t want to see the new system come out i’m looking forward to it either way but i’m hoping its compatible with the ps, ps2, and ps3 games the ps3 and ps vita was a bit of an aggravation when it turned out that ps vita could not play the psp games and the ps3 could not play the ps2 games

  • I cant wait honestly. Im both an old school gamer and new school.
I have a friend who told me bout the new PS. and im stoked!

  • BADASS!!!!!

  • sucks you cant play ps3 games on this thats just so stupid cause gta 5 comes out in fall

  • Aeeesomeee! Can’t wait to own one :D

  • Sony better learn from it’s past failures and keep the pricetag within $300. Otherwise, shame on them.

  • If this system is not backwards compatable, then calling it a playstation #anything just isn’t right.
If it is, I will gladly pay for it, if not,… well I am happy enough with my backwards compatable Playstation 3, thank you very much.

    =p Thanks for reading.

  • The PlayStation 4 is going to be the best gaming system on planet Earth!

  • Is the PS4 going to be way more expensive than the PS3 was or is the starting price going to be within the same range?

  • WOOOOWWWWW !!! when would this be out ?? Im dying for it now !!!

  • @586 Around November:)

  • I don’t sony has done all their homework here. It seems there could be more here. The blueray ? did you give up on it? the spec’s ? My laptop is faster…. also when you guys praised it this is really for the gamerz. I’m a gamer and quite fond of C.O.D. not mentioned. I’ll wait to see how things are going you have always had great support. I believe you are showing us a nice cover but whats inside side is what were paying for. I feel that you should think outside the box and if there are plans for a ps5 sometime down the road give us that product now. Don’t hold back. With todays computers and graphic’s this is your BEST?

  • So I heard a rumor that the playstation network won’t be free when you release the ps4. You better fix the lagg before you screw up and start charging cause you’ll lose a lot of players to the xbox.

  • I just want to say this system looks promising. I hope that it is backwards compatible. When the PS3 came out we were promised a system that would work with all playstation games, however, that promise fell through. I look forward to seeing what this new system can do.

  • Amazing conference! That being said, I’m not buying any more PSN games or digital PS3 titles. If they can’t be transferred to the PS4, then what is the point? I will keep my PS3. That’s fine. When will Sony shut down the PS3’s store though? Two years? Five years? Ten years? I want to make sure my kids will be able to experience games like Journey or even something as simple as Super Rub A Dub. (I love that game, by the way.) How does Sony plan to fix that?!? I really want an answer. I hope I get one at E3. This could be a big deal breaker for me.

  • When will the PS3 be getting a price drop?

  • Okay SONY….I hope someone up there is reading all of this…..I have already started saving for my husband’s Christmas present…PS4…..I am ready to purchase when it is available…..IF AND ONLY IF his PS3 games can be played on his new PS4…if not it is a 100% deal breaker on my part…..we have WAY TOO MUCH MONEY invested in PS3 games to make them coasters….oh and by the way no kids here just me and him and we have purchased 4 did you read this right 4 PS3 consoles….1 was stolen 1 for a kid we call our own (that lives with his real parents) 1 for me and 1 for the hubby (who of course got his first) so with that being said PLEASE listen to your loyal customers….btw we stilll own 2 PS2 and 1 PS!

  • haha, I’ve been a fan since the 1st PS one. For the Playstation 4 I love the idea of downloading when the system is off, and pressing the ps button where last left off and the app for Apples Ipad and Android devices great idea! hope to see all these features and more! I am very curious to how much its going to cost and if they are going to continue Modern Warefare and Black Ops titles?! Good luck on preparing for hopefully this holiday season. there is probably going to be a delay but no complaints their! might as well make PS better! <3

  • i have been a long time playstation fan, and i have to say, honestly i think the ps4 is being rushed, i understand microsoft is coming out with the xbox 720 but come on guys, people are still into the PS3, and i dont think it lacks in anyway the ability to play current state software, there is still software i want to aquire that would be imports for me, and as i have seen from other posts it looks like the biggest concern is backwards compatibility.

ill tell you sony the first big infact biggest mistake you guys did with the ps3 is remove it with the newer models. i proudly still have my first ps3 and it has full backwards compatability. i play ps1,2,3. if the 4 comes out and it cant play all those versions. it will be no sale.

  • Yes the playstaion 4 its gonna be better then the xbox 720 if they make one

  • i wanna see the concel the system

  • I wish there would be PS3 BC as much as a lot of people here. But obviously enough people can do without it and the fact that putting in a Cell chip would raise the price a whopping $5 (I’m guessing) gives Sony all the justification it needs to keep it out.

As far as repurchasing games you already own to play them on a new system, Sony is a business. The whole purpose of business is to make a profit. It makes no sense (to them) tolet you play those old games without making money on it. Believe me, I’m sore about it. I really am, but Sony is going to do what Sony wants to do. As long as the money flows in, that’s all that matters.

  • @598 ( SeraphAnubis)

I honestly would not mind paying extra for a backwards compatible PS4 SKU. I bought the 60 GB PS3 for like $500 dollars because backwards compatibility is an important feature. I can understand if some people don’t want to pay extra for it because they don’t want it but some of us do which is why I think Sony should offer 2 SKU’s: a cheaper PS4 SKU with no backwards compatibly for those who don’t want it and a backwards compatible PS4 that has PS2, PS3 and PS4 backwards compatibility. I can’t see why they can’t do this.

  • I CANT WAIT!!!!! OHEMGEEE
