PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Knack

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • @VVaspInatoR ahhhh i seee….. Yeah it would have to cloud saved for the stats and trophies to stay separate on each PSN acct. I don’t know how many people play on the PS3 with someone at their home so I can see where you can see it as kind of useless. I have brothers that i play Call of Duty with when i’m at my parents house and i thought it would cool if I could keep all my stats separate from theirs and being able to have separate screen names instead of (Ja1015) and (Ja1015-2). You know what I mean?

  • TOMBA 3

  • Geez, you guys need to moderate these damn comments.

Bridges must be collapsing worldwide, because the trolls are roaming about.

  • Infamous 3 !!!!, AND Final Fantasy on ps4 this year for sure

  • @ Ja1015 Ahhh i gotcha yeah COD makes seperate profiles for spec ops and survival for other players but yea i seen people online like that tho … i have never tried it before but if you have a 2nd account on your system its worth a try but doubtful.

  • @ Elvick LoL’d

  • fell asleep, what they say about games.. are there gonna be discs, can you buy pre-owned

  • Nice reveal. You did not say all but, the information is there. Will still wait for the complete revelation on E3 and if it will stream all games to vita. I’m looking at buying both vita and ps4 at the same time. Also, I want to know more on what will happen on my games purchased physically and digitally on my PS3. But, in any case, I will buy the PS4. When? Not sure yet, depending on the complete package they will offer.

  • @ JohtoDreamer151 I totally agree with you on transferring data especially. there have been many themes i’ve had that were taken off my download list when i had to have my Ps3 serviced. but there is the PS plus option which lets you transfer your games saves…

@ TripG Everything you said, I absolutely agree with you 100%. As for myself, i don’t completely trust data solely on the fact that it can get corrupted or something just happens. As for multiplayer games, i love to play online, but I do enjoy the regular campaign modes on games immensely (especially for God of War.

  • @Elvick lol i agree, but i didn’t see an option to get a separate private convo so i did what needed to be done.

  • Anywhos Thanks!!!! PlayStation for the reveal and the voucher and again keep sharing the knowledge and support of new developers and studios! Cheers Buzz!

  • wow I am so happy I have been waiting to see this day is my dream thank you SONY as a gamer always been playing on play station since ps1 then ps2, ps3 and my dream ps4 with everything I dream about wow I really want to play 300 years video games but I can be happy with only 100 years enjoying the best technology JAPAN has been offering year after year so happy SONY has a new BABY hahahahoihihihihohohoho yes.

  • So, this seems awesome. Instant loading, no more loading screens? Maybe? And the play digital titles as you download is awesome! But one of my biggest questions. How much internal storage will it have? This thing seems to be doing ALOT at once. Its going to need to break new ground into the terabyte threshold to be affective.

Im loving this SHARE concept. There are so many times (most all of us im sure) that i do some really cool, near impossible to repeat thing. And can not get to a recording device quick enough. This will be epic.

Glad its coming out so soon too. But still a little upset at the lack of longevity of my ps3. Another concern…in the early years anyway of the ps4. Will we be on the same network? Like, can a ps3 player play online with ps4 with the same game? I know eventually it will be negated, but at first…

Also…backwards compatible? At least backwards to ps3. AT LEAST!.

To much to comment on….terabytes of memory, backwards compatibility and ps3/ps4 connectivity?

  • Oh! I also want to know what would PS Plus looks like on PS4.

I am wishfully thinking that on the PS4 Launch we would see like “All PS Plus users would receive all launch games for free” hahahah.

  • Yea-haw. Can’t wait . ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

  • GIVE ME THAT CONSOLE! I WANT IT RIGHT NOW!

  • By the way, thanks for the $5 voucher Sony. Not sure, why it is not $10

  • i think this is a digital only system..

  • @ neuropunk

Where did I say or even “act” like JRPGs were a “niche” genre? You’re hallucinating – I hope – because otherwise you’d be flat-out lying. Please, don’t be like that one guy… you know who… the little lost hare from Wonderland with the square and compass following me everywhere I go (somehow he became separated from Alice, poor guy). I can see that you’re not intentionally weaving back-masking witchcraft into your posts like he does, so I know you’re not inherently malicious, but c’mon, pay more attention.

By the way, you have more shooters on your trophy list than I do. I have… NONE. You’ve got a few. Do you really hate them as much as you claim? Pew! Pew!

  • Loving the social integration and some of the other features you announced. What I’m NOT loving is your approach to backwards compatibility. Not everyone wants to stream their older games anytime they want to play them. That isn’t true BC anyway. Isn’t the point of BC is so you can play the games that you ALREADY OWN on a disk to play in their new next-gen console? Not every country has the infrastructure either to handle this always on streaming content. Did you people not hear the uproar when you took out PS2 compatibility in the Playstation 3? While I think streaming older games can be useful it’s not a GOOD alternative to real backwards compatibility. I hope it isn’t too late and you’ll find a way to put it back in. Because not having it there is a stupid decision

  • @ Shadow_Dancer

Putting the Cell processor (and a Blu-Ray drive IF it doesn’t have one) in the PS4 would increase the cost significantly. Just keep your PS3.

  • Thank you sony!

this is just amazing… i can’t wait until the end of the year!

  • When Grand Theft Auto comes out for PS4, I’ll consider it. I’ve already bought 4 PS3s as try get a lot of long term use. Until I’m sure it can take the heat, And Rockstar says its time, Then I will buy. Unless it won’t play the Hundreds of titles I already have. If thats the case, I’ll rent one from Rentacenter for a week and play through GTA VI, or VII! I’m old and I have an NHRA B/Fuel Funy Car that is starting to seem inexpensive!

  • epic, but I want to know when it comes out and what the system looks like?

  • I just want to say thank you guys for putting on a killer show. You showed what was important: the games and the developers behind them supporting the system. That goes MUCH further with building goodwill with your customers than paying celebrities to get on stage to sing, dance, lie, and generally be irrelevant to the product itself. Never go that route Sony, never go that route.

Bought on launch by the way.

  • I honestly think the BEST part was the complete and utter lack of JRPGs. That stuff is nonsensical emo weeaboo trash. I could’ve done without Squeenix there, but I was hoping for either Just Cause 3, or maybe a very slim chance of a new Parasite Eve. Thank god there was no Kingdom Hearts. Hands down the worst games I have ever played in my life.

That said, I loved the whole thing. I am primarily a PC gamer who uses Steam, so I guess the whole “downloadable games only” argument doesn’t bother me. I would really prefer disc based though.

The social aspect is great, and I wish people would stop whining about it. It’s pretty clear from the whole conference that you CAN shut it all off if you want to, but it’s there if you choose to use it. I love using Twitch, so I’m going to be all about streaming my gameplay and sharing with friends.

The games…mever played a Killzone, but that looked okay. Watchdogs and InFamous: Second Son got me really excited. Knack looks cute, but not really my thing. I don’t do racing games, so Driving Club had zero appeal to me as a game, but visually? WOW. Just blew me away.

  • @PrimeroIncognito

Oh I intend to keep my PS3 either way ;) I just think it’s alittle more convienent when wanting to load up an old game, I don’t have to drag out another console. I alsolike how BC allows the library of games to build creating a “Playstation legacy” of sorts. I’m not really convinced that the Cell processor would be that expensive to implement anyway.

According to specs listed by Gamesradar it does have blu-ray:

    Main Processor: Single-chip custom processor
    CPU : x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, 8 cores
GPU : 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD next-generation Radeon™ based graphics engine
    Memory: GDDR5 8GB
    Hard Disk: Drive Built-in
    Optical Drive (read only):
    BD 6xCAV
    DVD 8xCAV
    I/O: Super-Speed USB (USB 3.0) 、AUX
    Communication: Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T)
    IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
    Bluetooth® 2.1 (EDR)
    AV output: HDMI
    Analog-AV out
    Digital Output (optical)

  • As much as I am excited for the PS4 I still think the PS3 has MANY years left in it. Out of all the consoles out there this gen, I still think the PS3 is the best.

  • how cost ps4? please answer

  • Is PS4 going to be compatible with PS3 disks?

  • Nice, a post from Jack Tretton himself. I was wondering where he was during the Playstation Meeting, he and Kaz are, in my opinion, the best speakers I’ve ever seen for the Playstation brand and it felt a little empty without them. Still, the new guys did a great job(especially when Mark Cerny was surprised to play Knack through Remote Play and gave such an intelligent response, that was hilarious).

I’m definitely excited for the future of the best brand in gaming, hopefully the Vita will take off and dominate the market when it gets a worldwide price drop and titles like Killzone: Mercenary and Tearaway. It’s the best portable system ever, why shouldn’t it succeed on a massive scale? Same to the PS4, so glad used games are supported(I like truly owning my games, after all).

  • can’t wait to try then new features and the live stream is amazing.

    keep it up PlayStation

  • PS4 looks amazing but I was hoping for at least a little time to be spent on talking about the future of the Vita.

  • wake me up when Bethesda have got a PS4 game going ;)

  • They were able to fit the PS4 into a controller! I can’t wait………. Seriously thought, it looks like Sony is on the right track.. I just don’t think i will be using the share button too much, no one wants to watch me fall off a legde 300 times.

  • Hi Jack –

Please offer a hardware option for backwards compatibility at launch – either as higher-priced SKU or as an add-on (ala the old ColecoVision Expansion Module – LOL). I’m sure that I and many others would pay for the option now that we’ve amassed such large collections on the PSN ecosystem.

Going forward I could see this being removed as Gaikai advances, but I think this is critical at launch for a lot of folks.

If we have the option, I’ll be a day one buyer.

    Thanks for listening.

  • We should be able to add our friends from PS3 and still play with them, also idk if they mention it, but did they say the ps4 will be backward compatibility.

  • As most people are i am so looking forward to this but i would like to know more about the graphics ,processor and hard drive capabilities !

  • @Feisar
Your pc must not have good graphics, because every new game that i have played.
Looks as good if not better on my A10 gaming rig..
I also have 8gb’s of ddr3 ram, and a ati 6750 HD Gpu too with dx11 enabled constantly….

  • it looks proper smart the controller can not wait

  • ma i giochi che ho per PS3 mica finiscono nel cesso possono essere riutilizzati anche per PS4

  • I just have one question, does our old PS3 games should work?
And what about the ones that have PS+, will work too?

  • Missed you at the show Jack :(

  • WAITING FOR IT BUT I ALREADY HAVE PS3 !!! :( CHAL KOI NA !!

  • You can not call it a “reveal” but not show the system. This was an announcement. Ok you revealed a controller and some huge Kinnect looking thing, and promised remote play again… I’m not impressed. Ok I’m a little impressed. ;-)

  • muito bom !

  • I have not been this excited for a video game console in a long time. It brings me back a couple decades to when I was a boy. Best of all, it comes out this holiday season, so only 9-10 months to go! Great job guys, very excited for this.

  • when it com out i want to know

  • ANOTHER epic disappointment in the video game industry. This trend lately of extra features, useless crap and flashy plastic are going to be the downfall of console gaming. Sony has no idea how close they are to alienating what little hardcore fan base they have left. Good one Sony, I officially couldn’t care less about the PS4. Maybe I’ll get myself a new graphics card or two instead.
