New PS All-Stars: Zeus & Isaac, MediEvil + The Unfinished Swan Level

Seth Killian's Avatar + Posted by Seth Killian on Feb 27, 2013 // Lead Game Designer, Sony Santa Monica Studio

Hi guys,

Happy to be back to tell you about some new surprises from PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. More costumes? More minions? Well, okay, yes. But also more new characters!

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale: Zeus

Our newest challengers are Isaac Clarke from Electronic Arts’ Dead Space, and Zeus from… well, from some of the foundational myths of Western society, but also from a little PlayStation game you might know called God of War by SCEA Santa Monica Studio.

How did these two emerge as All-Stars from the vast PlayStation multiverse? Synchronicity. We were talking with some friends over at EA who were hard at work on Dead Space 3, and with a lot of Dead Space fans on our team and all the cool tools at Isaac’s disposal, some quick concepts emerged and we knew he’d be a great addition. We’ve also wanted to add another “heavy,” hard-hitting character into All-Stars (Big Daddy was getting lonely), and with all the work on God of War: Ascension around Sony Santa Monica, Zeus emerged as a perfect fit.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale DLC 2PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale DLC 2

As you might remember, Zeus is kind of an arrogant jerk, but one thing you can say for him is that he does not mess around. As King of the Gods, he’s a big guy, used to getting his way, and he hits HARD. Of course he’s got some cool combos, but his primary offense is centered around fewer, but more powerful strikes that generate a ton of AP and send enemies flying. He can power up virtually all of his attacks into a “charged” version with all kinds of new effects, giving him one of the biggest move lists in the game. Super-armored rushing punches, a clone move, teleports, and lightning bolts–lots and lots of lightning bolts. Your best bet against Zeus is to stay on his good side (aka behind him), or far away.

His level 1 is a giant Lightning Clap that lacks range but has a great area of effect. Level 2 lets Zeus take to the skies and fly anywhere before exploding in a deadly lightning storm. His level 3 “Wrath of Zeus” takes you to Olympus to fight a godlike 100-foot tall Zeus, and in true boss-fight form, he can wipe out half the screen with a single strike.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale: Isaac

Through a combination of playtesting and staying true to his original series, Isaac emerged over the course of development as a strong mid-range fighter using the unique weapons and Kinesis/Stasis abilities you’ll recognize from the Dead Space series (think somewhere between Drake and Jak, with a lot of twists). He has some very interesting long-range options (the Bouncing Bola acts like sniper rifle that bounces off of walls, getting more powerful with each bounce) and he’s got some great moves up close, but just as in Dead Space, he’s at his best keeping foes safely out of his face. He can advance or retreat while firing his trusty Plasma Cutter, toss proximity mines, use Stasis attacks to freeze opponents, or spin slowly moving Ripper blades at enemies with a blast of Kinesis torque.

His level 1 super fires a supercharged stasis burst and then overloads his Plasma Cutter, which can be aimed anywhere, even at very long range. His level 2 super overloads his Kinesis module creating a bubble that launches nearby enemies away at “terminal” velocity, and Isaac’s level 3 takes you into space where he blows the airlock, sucking everyone into space for a quick game of something like “Asteroids” where Isaac flies around blasting opponents and space debris into dust.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale DLC 2PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale DLC 2

Finally, what better to welcome new characters than with a new stage? The new “Graveyard” level mashes up MediEvil‘s Graveyard opening with… The Unfinished Swan. While we start in recognizable MediEvil territory (complete with pop-up zombies and a wisecracking gargoyle), the “Swan” elements are shown off with a mid-match whiteout and ink splatters that slowly reveal the emerging structures. There are lots of little Swan touches throughout the stage, from the hidden labyrinth, to a balloon, the King, and of course the Unfinished Swan itself makes a cameo.

So how do All-Stars fans get their hands on the new stuff? The new DLC pack hits the PlayStation Store on March 19th. As before with the recently released “Fearless” stage, the new “Graveyard” stage will be free in online ranked matches and $1.99 if you want to own it. As for Zeus and Isaac, I’m very happy to announce they will come to North America FREE as a redeemable downloadable voucher code packed in with the new God of War: Ascension, which launches on March 12th. When Zeus and Isaac Clarke go live in All-Stars on March 19th (one week later), you can use your code to redeem them any time after they are live. For anybody who doesn’t pick up God of War: Ascension (but of course that’s only crazy people–it’s got what I think is the most epic final battle in the series’ history), the characters will also be for sale in the PSN Store for $4.99 each.

I’ll have some more details coming on the new challengers in the coming weeks — until then, see you online!

Hey Seth,

Always nice to see you on the blog, supporting the game, which I think is amazing. Any plans yet for DLC characters Joel from the Last of Us, and Delsin Rowe from the new inFAMOUS: Second Son? I would like to see what you guys come up with if you guys plan on implementing them into the game. I know these games haven’t come out yet, but could you maybe tell me a little info? Thanks, appreciate it. :)

I don’t know why people complain so much I think Isaac Clarke is a great choice from a great series, Zeus is odd but his moves look really cool. And the unfinished swan and medieval stage is awesome, I’m very excited. I hope we see alot more DLC please. And more than that I hope this games sold well, I really want a sequel that goes all out.

I have only one question, the Brazilian edition of GoW: Ascension will have the vouchers for those characters? If not I’ll just stick to a digital copy of the game when it launches.

While the characters might not have been what was expected I still look forward to downloading and playing with them. Zeus looks to be one of my new faves.

The stage meanwhile just looks fantastic and it’s great seeing a more niche title getting recognition.

While these two charcters aren’t the most exiting for me personally, I think overall they’re both good choices. I think it’s great that an already represented franchise is getting an additional character because it seemed kinda odd that inFamous was the only one to do so thus far (even though inFamous is probably my favorite franchise in the lineup). I’m also glad to know that third party franchises aren’t completely out of the question when it comes to DLC characters. Thanks for the update! :D

Since these characters aren’t going to be free you guys should do like a 2 for 1 deal the first week to help those of us who want to keep playing and enjoying these games but don’t have a lot of money after spending too much on all those great deals you guys have had recently

@Seth
Ill be honest I really didnt like PS All-Stars, there just seemed to be a certain charm missing from the game that I hoping it would have. Although Im looking at this game in a similar light as Smash Bros 1, there’s a foundation, but not much else.
hopefully All Stars 2 manages to do what the first didnt.
Also I personally find that you can only kill with supers stupid.

I REALLY like PASBR. That said: from the start, the game has felt to me INCOMPLETE. From the roster of characters to the selection of levels… I continue to remain struck by the empty space. The additions of Kat and Emmett and Fearless—and the way that they were released—were very welcome and held promise that more DLC would follow. Now, we learn that it is. But $4.99/character is, quite frankly, ABSURD—and INSULTING to those of us who paid full retail for the game. Just 10 characters at $4.99 each and a handful of new levels (at…?) would cost us more than what we paid for the game itself! I agree that $4.99 seems a pretty good price point for a PAIR of characters AND a level. At $4.99 EACH, there is NO WAY that I’ll be picking up Isaac OR Zeus. If the Graveyard level is similarly priced, I WON’T be picking up it either. Right now, I’m not even interested in picking up my controller. The reason that PASBR hasn’t been wholly embraced by the Playstation community isn’t its similarities to Smash Bros. Or its mechanics. Or its inclusion of some less-than-”iconic” characters. It’s that it was HALF-RELEASED. I didn’t pay for half of a game and I’m growing impatient and angry with how the other half is being released.

Honestly I’m surprised with the amount of hate for these new characters. I personally think they’re great. Sure Isaac is a third party character but since when has a third party character been a bad thing (specifically talking about Brawl)? I’m actually really excited for Isaac, his moves look phenomenal. Zeus also looks really fun to play as. When a person complains about getting to play as the king of the Greek gods, there’s something wrong with them. I never even played Gravity Rush or Starhawk but regardless I found myself enjoying the characters immensely. Judging a character without playing as him/her is like judging a food before tasting it. Not only is it foolish, but you could be missing out on something you would actually love.

221

+ Freshh23 on March 1st, 2013 at 8:40 am said:

As expected from the biggest disappointment of 2012 and one of the biggest disappointments in years, PSASBR, the next characters are being charged for even though they should be free and if for whatever reason Isaac couldn’t be free, okay, charge for him then but $5? for a freaking character? GTFO! The video game industry is so greedy and anti consumer and probably care less about their consumers than other industries and take more advantage of us and rip us off more. Charging for content that should be free and worse, charge so much for that content. Or if a post launch content can’t be free, they overcharge. Charging for a freaking character, skin or stage? GTFO! Charging for 3rd party is fair if it cost you too much and it can’t be made free but there is no excuse for charging for Sony content.

222

+ Freshh23 on March 1st, 2013 at 8:40 am said:

Also, another huge fail, this game is suppose to be about PlayStation icons, celebrating PS history and yet this game sold out and it’s the complete opposite and just about current popular IPs and marketing for future games. Where are the PlayStation icons? Not getting 3rd party icons is one thing, but there’s ZERO excuse to not include Sony icons. Where’s:

Legend of Dragoon? Jumping Flash? Alundra? Wild Arms? Dark Cloud? Gran Turismo? Blasto? Team Ico? Socom? Syphonn Filter? The Getaway? Arc the Lad? Quantic Dream? Flow/Flower/Journey? Siren? Tomba? Should I go on?

223

+ Freshh23 on March 1st, 2013 at 8:42 am said:

Lastly, I won’t get this game until the Super Edition comes out with all the DLC included, you must be crazy if you think I’m a stupid consumer and is going to pay for content that should be free or overpriced content. You give me the middle finger, I give it right back, and you guys suffer more than me because gaming is just a hobby, selling games is your job.

+ InfiniteILM on March 1st, 2013 at 5:40 pm said:

New Dante – He was in the game even before his game was released
Raiden – Snake? Nope, we Get Raiden because of MGR.

You guys are terrible. $2 for Alternate costumes. Wow.
You guys set out to make a SSB style game that PLaystation fans could enjoy, but you messed u real bad.
The game is filled with bugs and glitches but do you guys care? Nope. You’re busy trying to milk out the game as much as you can from it because it flopped. You want to know why it flopped? It was because the roster is a joke. Where’s Crash,Spyro,Cloud, etc? Instead we Have New Dante,Raiden,Big Daddy,Isaac, etc.
Online is unplayable thanks to the HOst D/c in every match becasue there is no host migration. No 1vs1 Ranked.
Parrappa’s Boom Box AP glitch, Sir Dan + Spike’s Stun glitch, and no to mention how broken KAt is thanks to her Down Circle attack.
Money grubbing pigs. I’m not supporting this game any longer, not buying anymore DLC either.

5$ for each characters? Ahahahaha. No.

Seriously, stick to the model you had with Kat and Emmete. Honestly, I think all characters should be free, and only stages be paid DLC. Can you imagine how bad it will be for newcomers a year from now (if this game even survives that long)? Paying for the game + extra for all the characters released within that time…..terrible and greedy business model that only hurts the game in the end.

Also, I’m fine with the extra costumes being paid DLC, since that’s purely cosmetic. But having actual content that drastically changes the gameplay and meta i.e. new characters being paid for is BAD!

Hey Seth. I love this game & I don’t understand why so many people complain about it. My “main character” is Jak, so I was wondering if he would get any more costumes or something? I would love to see an Erol costume for Jak, or at least a minion of Erol. I’d buy that. Oh and I think this game has a lack of villains, that’s really the only “issue” I can think of, not enough bad guys to create balance. I pre-ordered GoWA CE a long time ago, so I’m glad that I get these new characters for free. You guys are doing great, keep up the good work!

First thing first:
Shut up and quit complaining. Do something productive like filling out bug reports and being patient. You I’m sure you’ve no experience with coding, programming, Licensing, or anything in the development community. I do. And I’m ok with progression over time.

Game’s System:
This is not SSB, it does not play like it in any way. System for killing is completely different and acts like most other fighting games, if anythings comparable its Dissidia’s system of HP attacks vs Bravery.

Bugs/Etc:
Yes there are bugs in the game and they’re slowly fixing them, if you were a programmer yourself you’d know what you’d have to go through to find and fix a problem inside of a game.
As for the server issue, the company needs to gain more servers on their end to fix the matchmaking sequence. Which I’m sure will be fixed in the future. But thus far I found that its more likely on the User’s side considering my router has never had a problem connecting when I’m not on the internet

+ Sojyne on March 3rd, 2013 at 7:03 pm said:

@BkUzi Continued

Characters:
Any character that’s been with Sony for a majority of the share including advertisement and games has a chance of being on the roster. This however all has to do with licensing. For the rest of your rant about certain characters you should consider this.

New Dante:
Old DMC is gone and dead. Get over it. Capcom made that decision.

Raiden:
MGR has been in development since before MGS4′s Release. has nothing to do with it being released now. It’s always been there and I’m pretty sure that since Nintendo already has Snake and has had that entire thing planned out since the first game was on Nintendo. Again. Licensing.

Big Daddy:
BioShock was released on the Xbox and PC before Ps3 because Ps3 wasn’t released yet. But it already had a spot in its Development and was made to cope with a different processor when it was released.

Isaac:
Sony is the only system that gets Exclusives for Dead Space and again with Licensing for that has a right to be added to the list.

Zeus:
Yes the new GoW is coming out and yes its advertisement but that’s not anything negative.

FF/KH:
SquareEnix has final say on who will be added so who knows when.

+ Sojyne on March 3rd, 2013 at 7:03 pm said:

@BkUzi Continued

Marketing:
DLC for most games have always been above 1$USD, don’t expect everything to be given to you for free for they have to keep things on their end up like hosting. I do however agree that for the first few days to a week they should keep the characters free or at least half price. Costume packs take care of all that stuff for the price of 14.99$ Hell for the entire pack of costumes you pay less than you would normally. This , again, is like most games out on the market.

My own two cents:
I hope things will continue to progress and upgrade with more characters, stages, gameplay modes, and other things in the future. Especially considering that since Zeus is the first character to have the same game as one in the roster, we’ll be seeing more of this. Like Vergil with Dante, Sora and Rikku, Raven and Kat, Old Snake and Raiden, Ratchet&Clank and Alister Azimuth, or any other combination of characters and rivals.

that’s 1/4 of what i paid for this game.
that seems a little steep, and with the way you guys set up the character select screen it looks like A LOT more characters are coming soon. that’s too much money.

moral of the story:
i don’t want to pay $40 for a game then play another $40 on dlc so i can have the complete game
