IGN’s Top 25 PSN Games of All Time

Holy crap, I’m posting on the PlayStation.Blog. I’ve been reading this thing for years and saying “Shut up, Jeff and Sid; I can write that better than you!” And here I am. I’ve made it. Beyond.

Anyway, IGN.com is this website I work for, and it’s the Internet’s No. 1 source for video game news, previews, reviews and videos. My Podcast Beyond cohost Colin Moriarty and I sat down not too long ago, and hashed out the 25 PSN games we’d recommend to folks with a PS3. Gameplay, graphics, story – it all factored in here. But there’s something different about this iteration of the list.

IGN’s Top 25 PSN Games of All Time

Namely: this is the last year we’re going to make it.

We’re not done covering PlayStation Network, we’re not saying nothing’s coming out this year – we’re saying that PSN games are so good that there’s no point in treating them differently. There’s no point in not letting them compete with the biggest boxed games. Journey was IGN’s 2012 Game of the Year; clearly, these titles are good enough to just be considered “PlayStation 3 games.” Plus, it goes the other way; PS3 games are available digitally now on PSN, so what’s the point in differentiating? Great games are great games.

So, this list is it. The best PSN games you can possibly buy. Did your favorites make the cut? Click on over, read the article, and leave an insightful comment. If you do, you’re entered to win a PSN voucher code that will get you all 25 games. That’s right: go comment on the IGN article and you have a chance at walking away with all 25 PSN games.

I am also told that leaving a comment on this here PlayStation.Blog post before 11:59pm Pacific Time tonight will enter you in a random drawing to score the same 25 PSN games. Not bad, right? The giveaway has ended and the winner has been contacted!

Also, u should give me that voucher. There are a few games I’ve wanted to try but didn’t want to pay for on there. PLEASE!?

Beyonder! This is the most replies i”ve ever seen on here. That’s commitment to the fullest.Great work.

  • Here is me leaving a comment, I have most of these games already. I don’t need to win anything, I think all these games are just superb.

  • How cool is it to see Greg on the PS blog?! And how cool is it that Greg replies to every single comment? I wonder, will he reply to my comment?

  • The PS4 will we BEYOND our expectations

  • those games are awsome!

  • Great seeing The awesome Greg Miller on PS Blog. BEYOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BEYOND!!! My favorite game on the psn would have to be Super Star dust which I got with my vita and play for hours

  • The PS4 will be BEYOND our expectations

  • IGN/ Greg Miller posting on the PS Blog? Nice. But for a list on Top 25 PSN Games of All Time, is bit too early I think, especially if its all time. Hopefully, even after the PS4, PSN on PS3 will still receive the same amount of support its always been receiving as I probably won’t be able to pick up a PS4 at launch, so I’ll be sticking with my PS3 for a while.

  • Many of those I only played due to getting them through PS+. The rest looked interesting but I don’t get many chances to put cash in my wallet so I never really tried them.

  • Great list! All of them deserved to be on there!

  • These selections are BEYOND perfect.

  • Omg Greg is responding to everyone. im glad you made it to your “journey” fighting cancer. Hopefully you will do something big on the playstation blog starting today. But please don’t leave ign. You are like lengendary ign staff.

  • It’s an exciting time to be a member of the Playstation family. I can’t wait for the incredible digital offerings coming for PS4.

  • That Greg is a pretty cool guy

  • BEYOND!

  • I HAVE THE RANDOM POWER!!

I am destined to win, you shall bear witness to my randomness.

Thank you Playstation and IGN, catch you on the flipside!

  • BEYOND!

  • I played alot of Super Statdust HD, Dead Nation and Battlefield 1943. BEYOND!

  • I’ve only played one of the games on the list.

  • Glad to hear you’re treating PSN games and bluray games equally — totally agreed, it’s time for that!

  • Last time for this list makes me sad. I haven’t played Journey yet though it seems I’m missing out

  • My rundown…

    Purchased: 25, 23, 21, 20, 19, 17, 14, 13, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2**, 1

    From PS+: 18, 13*, 12, 10, 5

    On PC: 15, 11

    Nope: 24, 22, 16

*Purchased the Full Game Unlock, got the self-contained game from Plus (for PixelJunk Eden, I have Unlock+Demo, my sister has Game)
**I think I purchased this; regardless, have obtained the soundtrack several times over, including on PSN with art and a theme!

There’s so much positive to comment on, I just want to make one little rant: Screw the physics in Closure. Went back for the earliest secret collectible I could find (the slope where the barrel unlock the door’s pit), and it was INFURIATING trying to maneuver right. Either that barrel barely wiggles or it’s full speed ahead. Blegh.

  • I’ve spent way more money on PSN games than PS3 games, and that’s because I’ve always loved playing indie games much more than most triple A games (with some awesome exceptions like Ni No Kuni). IMO digital games are the perfect platform for independent developers, and its because of services like PSN that I intend to be a indie developer once I finish university. Thank you Sony for providing an awesome platform for developers to be able to create and express themselves however they choose!

  • Oh, I do hope to see the recent Retro/Grade show up somewhere (if it was mentioned, my apologies; tinkering with TF2 on Ubuntu). For as much as I avoid Guitar Hero, I had a kick blasting through Beginner with our Les Paul(?). It’s ’cause it starts with two lanes; Guitar Hero either has one-button or three lanes, which is a bit much for my senses.

  • Very nice list. With so many great games on PSN, it must have been difficult to choose a list of 25. And they are all of very different genres as well. Just goes to show you how varied gaming experiences can be nowadays.

  • According to Wikipedia, The Beyonder (from Marvel Comic’s “Secret Wars” series) returned in a 2006 series named after him. This series was called “Beyond!”. BEEEEEYOOOOOONNNND I TELL YOU!

  • Great List of Games, It’s funny because you can see how far the playstation network has come along. From Shatter to Journey, it has really been a great console generation. Hope they continue to own the competition with great exclusives.

  • No “Pixel Junk Shooter” (1 or 2)? No “Pain”? Well the top 25 listed are good games but maybe there should be a top 50 list instead with all the other great games left out.

  • I wonder if I could find time to play all these games (minus what I’ve already played) if I won the voucher code; hmmm…

  • I hope there’s still time left to be elligible for the contest. I’m a fairly new ps3 owner and getting 25 games would be insane. As Greg Miller says, PSN games are so damned good they deserve to be rated right along with all other retail releases.

  • Hey Greg,

Could you give me a follow? I write for PSVitaHub. I’d appreciate the support!

    Handle: @dLeted416

Always following your great work! Cheers!

  • Greg! Nice to see you over here. Really nice list, but I really disagree with one game; Bloodrayne Betrayal. I didn’t find it to be like an old Castlevania game at all, outside of the fighting zombies, monsters, and vampires. The scoring system felt weird and out of place, the fighting was very strange (At least in my opinion), and I really didn’t like the “stage” setup.

I’ve heard from so many people that it was like a Castlevania game of old, but when I finally played it, it just wasn’t. It feels like its own game, which isn’t too bad, but it definitely doesn’t feel like the brilliant GBA/DS Castlevanias.

Other than that, I thought your list was spot on. I would only replace Bloodrayne Betrayal with something like Quantum Conundrum. That would be a nice replacement. :)

    Oh, also, BEYOND!!

  • Sad to hear about Clements — the best to him and all his future endeavors! BEYOND!
