Willem Dafoe, Ellen Page Star in BEYOND: Two Souls October 8th

Derek Osgood's Avatar Posted by on Mar 01, 2013 // Associate Product Marketing Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment America

Last year at E3 we announced the much anticipated title from Heavy Rain creators Quantic Dream and the mind of visionary director David Cage. BEYOND: Two Souls is a psychological action thriller starring Oscar nominee Ellen Page (Inception, Juno) in the lead role of Jodie Holmes and featuring Quantic Dream’s unique brand of gameplay.

BEYOND tells the story of Jodie, a young woman who’s known since birth that she is different from everyone else. She possesses supernatural powers through her psychic link to an invisible entity she calls Aiden, and this gift has changed her life forever. Playing through 15 years of Jodie’s life promises to deliver one of the most thrilling and powerfully emotional experiences on PS3.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that Ellen will be joined by another Oscar nominee in Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Spider-Man) who will star as Nathan Dawkins, a government scientist who works with Jodie to analyse her powers. At a later stage we’ll have lots more to reveal on the interplay between Nathan and Jodie in the game (no spoilers today!), but suffice to say they form a compelling bond and together deliver some of the most unique and powerful scenes yet seen in gaming.

We’ve got a gameplay trailer for you today showcasing an early scene from the game in which Nathan first meets a young Jodie (played by a child actress, not Ellen), and including some sneak peeks at other scenes from the game. Check it out at the top of the post, or right here.

And we’ve got an interview with Willem talking about his role in the game:

Willem’s exciting inclusion in the cast is just the tip of the iceberg for our announcements today though, as we are also pleased to announce that BEYOND will be coming to PS3 on October 8th, 2013.

Additionally, everyone who pre-orders BEYOND at GameStop (or EB games for our Canadian friends) will receive an exclusive 30-minute playable additional scene DLC. We’ll be announcing more details on what that scene entails in the coming months.

And while supplies last, everyone who pre-orders *at GameStop will also receive a free upgrade to the Special Edition of BEYOND, which includes:

  • Exclusive Steelbook Premium Packaging
  • Extensive Behind The Scenes Video Features
  • Soundtrack
  • PS3 Dynamic Theme
  • PSN Avatar Bundle

Beyond: Two Souls for PS3 Steelbook

*Steelbook art not final

Hopefully you’re as excited about BEYOND as we are, and remember to run out and pre-order early. We’ll have much, much more content coming down the line in the coming months, so stay tuned! Any questions, just add them below.

Nice. Dafoe is a great actor.

October 8th seems so far but I can’t wait!

meh…i wasn’t too impressed with the previous too games by Quantum Dream. Indigo Prophecy was a QTE nightmare and Heavy Rain’s story just got really bad the further along it went.

I love the high quality talent you managed to get involved in the project like Dafoe and Page, but i need to see hear more gameplay impressions. I don’t want another cutscene heavy game with annoying QTEs thrown in to make it feel like a game.

Keep following our news. As someone who’s played those games as well I can honestly say Beyond is an evolution in more than just the talent involved.

Great casting. Looking forward to this one after playing Heavy rain years ago. And whoever downvotes this needs some serious disciplinary action.

I hate when you do that! Now I got another dilemma: Do I keep my Future Shop pre-order (no bonus but priced at 45$!) or do I get that Gamestop offer??? Might go with Gamestop (well, you already made me change my GoW Ascension pre-order (same deal at Future Shop changed to Collector’s Edition at Gamestop with a bunch of bonus stuff)

+ dragonmagician on March 1st, 2013 at 8:37 am said:

Oh, I was hoping for a Collector’s Edition, but I guess the pre-order bonus is better than nothing.

+ Freshh23 on March 1st, 2013 at 8:44 am said:

Wow, just wow. Quantic Dream has to just go make a movie on this.

If the preorder DLC isn’t something important than it’s okay because that’s how preorder bonuses should be, just extras and all the content that is important should be included in the disc, not locked but included.

You have a purchase.

+ FearMonkey on March 1st, 2013 at 8:46 am said:

I agree with @19: Please stop with the GameStop exclusives. Their stores are terrible and the people who run those stores are the most incompetent people I’ve ever had the misfortune to deal with.

Will be getting day 1! Release day makes me wonder exactly when the PS4 is coming out though. Either way i’m still gonna get this and still get my PS4, im not bothered that it wont be backwards compatible though since i’ll still have my PS3, it’s a nice feature but it’s really not that hard to turn one off and turn the other on, “gamers” are just extremely lazy, it can be pretty disgusting sometimes.

Really wish Amazon got some love.
It’s certainly cheaper for me to pre-order and order from Amazon.
It seems like a majority of people would also like to see this on Amazon or at the very least just another retailer.

I love Ellen Page in the movie Inception and William Defoe has been in some great movies as well; Spider Man and Spider Man 2, The Boondock Saints, The English Patient, just to name a few.

David Cage’s games come off as movies and that is not a bad thing, I’m so happy that he is making games and not making movies, in the traditional sense. David has achieved a level of emotion in his games that doesn’t come along often in video games. I have enjoyed his past work, just like I have with every game, Sony’s First Party Studio has made. That is not to single out any second or third party Studios, I know they have brought something great/amazing to the table, but as time goes on, the Story means more to me than anything else a game might have on it’s disc.

Sony, I hope you keep a great relationship with David and his team, along with your great First Party Studios, The second and third party studios that help make your systems great and your ecosystem blossom.

Wow, this gave me goosebumps. Absolutely amazing as I really like Dafoe. AND THEN THE CRASH.

“pre order now for additional scene DLC”
“pre order now for some steel book case”

You guys are doing everything for someone like NOT to buy this game on release. You know, maybe this some kind of strange forceful push. You know consumers don’t like it, it does effect your sales, but you have someone in the background screaming “keep doing it!!!! It’ll become norm, and all of them will buy everything through microtransaction, and no one will question it”.

Wonder how David feels about this?

At least I’m voting with my wallet.

I stopped playing Heavy Rain about 3 hours in. The quick time events (QTE) just ruin the game. As interested as I am in the story the gameplay is beyond awful. It keeps company with the rubber-band physics of Motorstorm and the floaty jump of LBP.

If Beyond Two Souls has QTE I won’t touch it with a ten foot pole.

+ blakseed on March 1st, 2013 at 9:56 am said:

+ KidCommando on March 1st, 2013 at 9:57 am said:

I don’t get it. All these publishers and developers all complain about 2nd hand sales and that 2nd hand sales are ruining the industry.

THEN you go ahead and partner with the biggest reseller of video games on the planet to promote your games and get people in the doors of Gamestop with exclusive content.

Why would you encourage gamers to shop and Gamestop if they were such a detriment to the industry with their business practices?

Yes, these people will be buying a new game with their pre-order, but it still is a feather in Gamestop’s hat by getting people in their doors and getting people to shop there.

If 2nd hand sales were such an issue, wouldn’t you distance yourself far away from that kind of company if it hurts your bottom line so much?

I’m sure it is a corporate scratch my back and I’ll scratch your back kinda thing, but it is extremely silly to promote the supposed killer of the video game industry.

With that being said, Beyond looks awesome and it is cool that there is another big name actor in the mix. Very much looking forward to seeing how the game plays.

As much as I want the Special Edition, I can’t justify spending $10 more (shipping and tax cost) on the game than I would on Amazon.

Other than that, day one purchase for me. Heavy Rain was awesome.

So the steelbook is only for gamestop pre-orders? Because the playstation twitter post for this article makes it sound like it is for ALL pre-orders. Btw I’d rather have a regular case than a steelbook.

I’m really looking forward to the game. I was really impressed with Heavy Rain as a totally unique experience.

I also want to express thanks for the inclusion of the soundtrack with the pre-order. I really enjoy good game soundtracks so that’s a nice enticement to pre-order. TLOU is doing the same. Of course I don’t really mind paying for soundtracks since it’s an extra vote for the importance of good music in games and hopefully gives a little extra $ to the composers.
