Willem Dafoe, Ellen Page Star in BEYOND: Two Souls October 8th

Last year at E3 we announced the much anticipated title from Heavy Rain creators Quantic Dream and the mind of visionary director David Cage. BEYOND: Two Souls is a psychological action thriller starring Oscar nominee Ellen Page (Inception, Juno) in the lead role of Jodie Holmes and featuring Quantic Dream’s unique brand of gameplay.

BEYOND tells the story of Jodie, a young woman who’s known since birth that she is different from everyone else. She possesses supernatural powers through her psychic link to an invisible entity she calls Aiden, and this gift has changed her life forever. Playing through 15 years of Jodie’s life promises to deliver one of the most thrilling and powerfully emotional experiences on PS3.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that Ellen will be joined by another Oscar nominee in Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Spider-Man) who will star as Nathan Dawkins, a government scientist who works with Jodie to analyse her powers. At a later stage we’ll have lots more to reveal on the interplay between Nathan and Jodie in the game (no spoilers today!), but suffice to say they form a compelling bond and together deliver some of the most unique and powerful scenes yet seen in gaming.

We’ve got a gameplay trailer for you today showcasing an early scene from the game in which Nathan first meets a young Jodie (played by a child actress, not Ellen), and including some sneak peeks at other scenes from the game. Check it out at the top of the post, or right here.

And we’ve got an interview with Willem talking about his role in the game:

Willem’s exciting inclusion in the cast is just the tip of the iceberg for our announcements today though, as we are also pleased to announce that BEYOND will be coming to PS3 on October 8th, 2013.

Additionally, everyone who pre-orders BEYOND at GameStop (or EB games for our Canadian friends) will receive an exclusive 30-minute playable additional scene DLC. We’ll be announcing more details on what that scene entails in the coming months.

And while supplies last, everyone who pre-orders *at GameStop will also receive a free upgrade to the Special Edition of BEYOND, which includes:

  • Exclusive Steelbook Premium Packaging
  • Extensive Behind The Scenes Video Features
  • Soundtrack
  • PS3 Dynamic Theme
  • PSN Avatar Bundle

Beyond: Two Souls for PS3 Steelbook

*Steelbook art not final

Hopefully you’re as excited about BEYOND as we are, and remember to run out and pre-order early. We’ll have much, much more content coming down the line in the coming months, so stay tuned! Any questions, just add them below.

  • Last major PS3 exclusive, before PS4 drops.
    Can’t wait.

  • Can’t wait, super excited for this game. I wish more developers created games like this. FRESH, UNIQUE.

Tired of all the silly Call of Duty games.

  • this game is very intriguing, and with an incredible cast I don’t doubt it will be epic, but sadly I’m going to pass on this one since the PS4 will be around the corner.

  • @2 I couldn’t disagree more about your take on Heavy Rain. Heavy Rain is one of the greatest games I have ever played and made me a huge fan of Quantic Dream

I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU GUYS GOT WILLEM DAFOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m pre-ordering this ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sony why not Amazon? Gamespot do not accept foreign cards, so people in other countries can’t buy it (there is some countries without official retailers and you must buy games with rip-off price). This is bad move. I always make pre-orders for good games (like “The Last of Us”), especially if they offer good freebies (like steelbooks and behind the scenes videos, because I work in game dev and I am want to know how it done in large, talented studios). And now I can’t get it because of gamestop exclusivity. This will not change my mind and I will buy that game to support Quantic Dream, but if there was more options that more friendly for foreign.

  • finnally i really want to play this game :) Gamestop in Germany will have the same offer with pre-order??

  • I order only from Amazon, no sales tax and gamestop screws over non rewards customers all the time. So throw the deal over there, or I’ll just wait for the black friday 20 dollar sale

  • I’ll cancel my Amazon pre-order and go to my local GameStop probably today. I can’t resist a steel case. I didn’t realize this game was coming by this fall. It better sell a lot, to pay for top notch movie stars. I really like this trend of having top actors in video games. Immersion is easier when you’re not laughing or groaning at bad line readings.

Unlike many, I love my local GameStop. They are always very helpful and they don’t get mad when I threaten to punch them or shoot up the place if I don’t get a steel case but so far I’ve always gotten one of the copies.

  • The Green Goblin! Can’t wait for October 8th!

  • This pre-order deal is such a shame! Freaking hate Gamestop, but I can’t pass on extra 30-min of content and the soundtrack. UGH!

  • Fantastic. I get tears in my eyes just looking at their performances. I can’t even begin to imagine how great the emotions will become when we actually play it. This is one of those times when I wish I can be involved in the development process, to make something so fresh, so creative, so stunning.

But I’d do one thing different though. The motion capture for the facial expression is great, but the one thing missing, the one thing that made Avatar what it is, is the performance capture of the actors’ eyes. There are just some things about the eyes that cannot be re-created by polygons alone: the soul. And since Beyond has Two Souls, it should incorporate that technology!

  • love that steel case but while supplies last. cries in the corner

  • Is it possible to preorder at a gamestop and change it to a different one later down the line? Because I may be moving in the fall but I don’t want to miss out on the preorder so I want to preorder ASAP.

  • Great actor – who’s kinda awkward, messed up and hilarious at the same time :) He also totally saved that otherwise lame suck@ss fist siderman movie.

  • *first

  • The Green Goblin is in Beyond??? BEYOND!!!!!

  • What you mean by while supplies last I can still go preorder tomorrow and get it LE right?

    @ 51 HorrorGod

No, not necessarily the last major PS3 exclusive. Far from it infact – There are rumors Gran Turismo 6 could be PS3 exclusive, and I think sony PR said recently that there are still other “Highly Significant” PS3 games still unannounced :)

  • William Dafoe is a awesome actor & great actor to be in the game.

  • @ 58 lisatsunami

Despite my excitement for the game, I think using well known actors in games is a slippery slope that doesn’t sit well with me. Actors and actresses bring so much baggage with them, that it gets harder and harder to watch a movie and let yourself go into the story because the whole time your are realizing that “that’s Anne Hathaway” or whoever.

Games have always created new wonderful characters that define themselves and are like a “living” creation of a character from a book. I don’t want “Brad Pitt starring as Nathan Drake”, I just want Nathan Drake. I understand actors are used for mo-cap etc, but utilizing big names like this scares me a little bit, especially as the characters have their likeness.

    ….

  • continued…

I like QD and trust Cage and the team to deliver a great, unique experience, but I do hope using actors like this is a rarity. One of the things I love about games is that I can sit back in wonder at the talented people who developed these characters and environments. I appreciate the work put into it and I don’t want all the appreciation to go to Hollywood actors because of their outstanding “performance”.

What if Arkham City starred Hathaway and Bale? Would it be the same? What if Asylum starred Val Kilmer??

  • Lastly… I like Dafoe and Page. I think they’ll do great and as a one off experience it should be pretty cool. I just don’t want games to be hijacked by Hollywood. :)

  • MP_is_for_Chumps

…..and don’t forget already announced games still missing in action like The Last Guardian and FF Versus XIII :)

  • Is there a possibility to include Beyond: Two souls demo with The Last of Us?? XD

  • @58 I hope not. Ive already made my “final PS# games” List

(which consist of dark souls 2, murdered soul suspect, dead pool, phantom pain, Metal gear ground zeroes), final fantasy 13-3 and final fantasy 14 and this game…

Id hate to have to add to itll so i hope anything else that magically gets announced will be on PS4 too

  • @51 dont listen to this guy….PS3 got 3 good years left. im sure you heard about the Gran Turismo 6 rumors…

  • @spaceboy21: you make very good points and I agree with you, especially about not wanting Brad Pitt, but I feel the same way about movies, that because of what I know about some actors I can’t suspend disbelief and immerse myself in that particular art piece. A great actor will transcend that, particularly if shepherded by a good director. I’m trusting David Cage, Ms. Page and Mr. Dafoe in this.

I’m not saying there aren’t great voice actors. I can’t imagine anybody but Nolan North as Drake and from what I’ve seen so far, Troy Baker as Joel is tremendous. The guy who does the Japanese VO for Ni No Kuni is hilarious and fantastic. I appreciate the devs who try to bring us the best, every time.

  • I was hoping that this game would be on the Playstation 4 honestly.

  • Whatttt, Willem Dafoe is pretty big news, suprised this wasn’t announced earlier.

Make the steelbook better looking and my money is yours!

  • Oh wow, at first I was like “Meh, I preferred the actor for Jayden from Heavy Rain”… Then after closer inspection, I realize this was the guy who played green goblin and was harry’s father in the original spider-man. That dude was so incredible!

I still gotta go back to heavy rain and do another playthrough just to save Norman Jayden. The guy was my favorite character and I blew it. Spent too much time in the ARI because I couldn’t figure out how to exit the ARI (turns out I had to swing the controller down, stupid six-axis) and [SPOILER ALERT] Jayden dies from a overdose….

And there went my favorite character in the entire game. Also the only character with any common sense in the game.

  • And the cast just keeps getting better and better. BEYOND!

  • @ lisatsunami

Thanks. I totally agree about good voice actors like North for Drake. Enslaved had incredible facial animation imo. Actually sometimes I find better immersion when you can wrap your own story around the characters, especially NPCs. My son and I have some good laughs projecting feelings and thoughts onto our pawns in Dragon’s Dogma or characters in Skyrim.

  • Big fan of Cage’s titles; great actors + great storytelling, I’m excited.

  • is the soundtrack on a physical CD? I would much prefer that over a download code for MP3s.

are the videos bluray-quality (1080p, high bitrate, etc)?

As an enormous fan of Heavy Rain (and Indigo Prophecy!), I felt like I got screwed when I pre-ordered Heavy Rain and then other versions with more and more extras were released later for less than half the price I paid. I was also expecting at least one more Heavy Rain “episode” in DLC with Jadyn, which never appeared. I’d like to know how we won’t be similarly taken advantage of, otherwise I’ll just wait for a PS4 native (or Greatest Hits/DIrector’s Cut) version.

PS: I”d really love to see a PS4-native version of Heavy Rain. and Indigo Prophecy. and Omikron :)

  • @ #7

Really? Because Willem Dafoe AND Pierce Brosnan both appeared in “Everything or Nothing” in the last generation.

  • AWESOME! I can’t explain how happpy I am with this. I bought my PS3 only for Heavy Rain. Now this… I love quanticdreams.

  • Will this game have Multiplayer or is it just the single player experience ? From what I have read so far it just seems like a single player game that is correct right ?

  • so stoked for this! Thanks, and please, please- I know it is BEYOND your control, but please, do not delay this!! Looking forward to this game and The Last of Us!

  • Kaneda_Neo-Tokyo

Heavy Rain is of the best experience I have ever lived in a video game along with FFVII, Mass Effect, StarCraft and others. Now you got Willem, great actor, this is just mega GENIUS. Quantic Dream 4 Ever. Sony buys the studio.

  • It looks amazing! I’m thrilled to see Dafoe on board. Heavy Rain was a fantastic and refreshing change from the generic game formula. I can’t wait to see what QD has done with BEYOND!

  • @ MP_is_for_Chumps @ 51 HorrorGod
“”No, not necessarily the last major PS3 exclusive. Far from it infact – There are rumors Gran Turismo 6 could be PS3 exclusive””

HorrorGod was saying this is the last big exclusive BEFORE the PS4 comes out. Not that it’s the last exclusive, full stop. Same thing happened with PS2…
But it is kinda special. This is the last BIG game we play before those of us who are planning to get a PS4 jump into the next generation. I’m excited.

@ the article: Willem Dafoe… seriously?! That’s freaking epic. Those videos send shivers up my spine. This game just keeps looking better and better. I’ve had it reserved since it was announced, haha, so I’m already set. Free LE upgrade is a nice gesture. October will be awesome.

  • Having a pre-order exclusively for a brick and mortar is a mistake. It’s GameStop attempt to stay competitive and gain sales. The ease, comfort, and security of using Amazon can’t be beat. Ultimately exclusive deals like this just hurt the customer experience. More options, more selections, to get the game you want where you want. There is very little that will make me stray away from purchasing my games on Amazon now. Analyze your metrics. Amazon brings over 200M customers to it’s site. That’s a lot of potential customers you are leaving out in the cold on steel case and DLC option.

  • What’s with all the GameStop Love? Why do you guys hate your Amazon Customers so much. This is the second pre-order bonus they are getting exclusively. Does GameStop have that large of a bag of Money to way Sony to be exclusive with its offers? GameStop is just an out of the way annoyance on my way home from work, amazon delivers my games right to me so I can spend that extra hour at home playing the game instead of screwing around with GameStops “would you like to preorder”, “hold on a minute while I try to find the game that is right in front of me”, and then the extra travel time I have to make….. I don’t care how down the road it is. Amazon makes life easier and convenient. Without all the noise of GameStop.

  • KazeEternal , i fully agree with you. GameStop Frustrates me.

  • Amazon is my number Choice

  • PS3 has the best cinematic acting with the Uncharted series, The Last of Us, and the two Quantic Dream games. That’s a pretty cool thing to have exclusively.

  • This game will be great, looks a lot more interactive than Heavy rain, which was a phenominal game in itself. That steel case looks cool.

  • Is this one of those preorder pick up steelbooks or does the game come inside the steelbook?

  • I wasn’t interested in this game but after seeing the little snippet with Dafoe I’ve changed my mind, this looks really great!

  • *gamestop pre order…check!* I’m a sucker for steel covers and exclsuive single player DLC! lol I can tell already, 2013 ia gonna be the Year of the Playstation! ^_^
