GungHo Spring Classics: Six More PSone Imports

GungHo Online Entertainment America has got six more Japanese PSOne import Classics coming your way this spring! I’d like to discuss the three titles we’re releasing today, and also get you pumped for the three we will unleash on May 7th, 2013.

4/9/13 Releases

Evergreen Avenue

Evergreen1Evergreen2

A unique blend of visual novel, schedule management, and puzzle, this game will have you competing with your rival for the coveted slot of emissary to the great spirits from beyond. Evergreen Avenue takes place in a world that was once governed by magic – where spirits and men once peacefully coexisted. The spirits eventually lost their influence over the realm and left humanity to its own devices. The king of the spirits has recently decided to return to this plane and bond with the common folk once more.

Players will choose between a male or female protagonist, each with their own unique backstory and traits, as they set out to impress the seven spirits who have come to judge them. The unselected character will become your rival, and you will have to outperform him/her to win! It’s crucial to manage each day carefully as you only have so much time to meet with the spirits and perform various tasks to gain their favor. At the end of each period, your success will be weighed against that of your rival to determine which of you will have the honor of ushering in the new age of spirits.

The story and event scenes are quite text heavy, but the menus and mini-games are relatively simple.

Favorite Dear ~Jyunpaku no Yogensha~

FavoriteJ1 FavoriteJ2

While not a direct story sequel, ~Jyunpaku no Yogensha~ is the next game in the Favorite Dear series that was discussed last time we spoke. The game continues with the hybrid RPG/dating simulation gameplay, but this time allows players to choose between a male or female angel as they raise and train the Braves and Faeries that defend the realm.

As with any RPG, a great deal of reading will be required to enjoy the story. Surprisingly enough, a lot of the menus and character stats are actually displayed in English. The battle system is relatively straightforward, and players shouldn’t have too much difficulty unleashing their attacks.

Zero Kara no Mahjong ~Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi~

Mahjong1_1Mahjong1_2

While our last Mahjong game was for more experienced players looking for the chance to compete against adorable opponents and have their fortunes told, this one is geared toward easing beginners into the game. Zero Kara no Mahjong ~Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi~ features an extensive “Tamago Class” mode which includes numerous Mahjong tutorials. These lessons are all in Japanese, so English-speaking players may want to skip them and opt to find the rules online.

Filled with cute cartoonish graphics and sound, this Mahjong game is oozing with undeniable charm!

5/7/13 Releases

While March and April had their share of RPGs and dating sims, May will be all about the traditional board/card game experience.

Motto Trump Shiyouyo!

MottoTrump1 MottoTrump2

Motto Trump Shiyouyo! is the sequel to the previously released Trump Shiyouyo!, but this time around there are even motto (more) games! These include the following: Daifugo, Shichinarabe, Seven Bridge, Dobon, Page One, Shinkeisuijyaku, Poker, Blackjack, Napoleon, Klondike, Free Cell, and Speed.

Once again, these games are relatively text-light, and players shouldn’t have too much difficulty finding the rules online. If you feel lucky, it’s time to put your skills to the test against a bevy of sassy cartoon animals!

Zero Kara no Shogi ~Shogi Youchien Ayumi-gumi~

Shogi1Shogi2

From the makers of the Zero Kara no Mahjong, this game eases players into the fascinating world of Shogi. Take lessons, read classic motivational proverbs, and take on all crazy cartoon challengers as you become the ultimate Shogi master!

While the lessons are all in Japanese, the game itself is relatively text light. Like the other traditional games, it would likely be easier to find the rules online and jump directly into a match.

Zero Kara no Mahjong ~Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi 2~

Mahjong2_1 Mahjong2_2

The sequel to Zero Kara no Mahjong ~Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi~ (see above), this game has players facing colorful cartoon characters in no-holds-barred Mahjong! The lessons that help ease players into the game are still around, but this time they go even further to help teach players proper Mahjong manners that can be applied in real-life situations.

Like last time, if you can’t read Japanese, I suggest you seek out Mahjong tutorials online so you can beat the pants off your challengers!

We hope you enjoy this month’s selection and invite you to come back in May for the rest. While our variety of imports may seem odd, it’s our goal to please those fans who have been hoping for eclectic titles that otherwise have no chance for a western release!

Like our other Classics, these are priced at $5.99 each. We are also working on brief walkthrough videos to help players navigate the Japanese menus and better understand these games. Our first one has already been posted on our Facebook page, and the rest are on the way!

  • Any chance of posting the videos outside of Facebook? Namely, YouTube?

    • We will definitely post these to YouTube as well!

By noon today both Favorite Dear: Jyunpaku no Yogensha and Zero Kara no Mahjong: Mahjong Yochien Tamago-Gumi will have videos go live.

By mid May, we hope to have videos for all of our PSone classics – including the 9 previously released ones.

    • Ah correction, I meant the 12 previously released ones!

My math has failed me once again…

  • Favorite Dear ~Jyunpaku no Yogensha~ looks fun but to much text that’s not in English so I will have to pass on it.

    • That’s definitely understandable.

If you are still curious about the game, I’d invite you to check out the walkthrough video that will go live a little bit later today. You can find it on our Facebook page or by searching the following title on YouTube:

GungHo Classics Series – Favorite Dear: Jyunpaku no Yogensha

  • Any chance of psone games receive trophy support ?

    • That’s certainly a cool idea, but we wouldn’t be able to guarantee anything like that.

Trophy support would have to be somehow added to the PSone emulation, and all of the publishers/developers for all of the PSone classics would have to go back into these games and get trophies implemented.

I think it’s more of a possibility when a game is completely remade or remastered rather than simply released in the native PSone Classics format.

That being said, it would be pretty neat!

  • Every time I see these posts I become happier with my decision to own playstation hardware!

Are there any plans for PSN text only localizations of PSP VNs like Clannad? One of my favorite PSP games is Disgaea Infinite and I, in my wishful thinking, thought that we would see more VN titles hit.

Either way, thanks for bringing the games you already are!

    • Thanks for the encouraging words!

Clannad still fills my heart with feels every time I think of it O_o

We don’t have any plans for that particular title, but I would personally like to see a lot more visual novels as well – in any language!

  • When are we going to be able to play ps2 classics and all ps1 classics on vita? I want to play Alone in the Dark on vita.

    • While we have no control over a feature like that being added to the Vita, I agree it would definitely be a nice addition to the already delightful handheld device!

  • I love that you guys are doing this, I need to pick up one of these at some point.

  • TALLglassofWATER

SO, seriously guys. What would have to happen to get all these text heavy japanese import rpgs that’ve been tossed into the US PSN translated. Even one at a time, what would it theoretically take to get the ball rolling? I just want to know, only asking.

    • It would basically take the same amount of time and energy to localize these games as it would any current generation JRPG/visual novel. It’s tough to justify that for a game that’s over a decade old when there are so many great games that continue to be released in Japan.

These particular titles were never given a western localization during the PSone generation, but with the opportunity to release them as imported Classics in their native language, they received the chance to come overseas rather than being lost to the ages.

  • TALLglassofWATER

I want to play favorite dear. If it is vita compatible I will get it soon. Is it vita compatible?

    • I have confirmed that the previous Favorite Dear title, Enkan no Monogatari, is compatible with the PS Vita, and Sony has informed us that Jyunpaku no Yogensha should be as well.

While Favorite Dear Enkan no Monogatari does not have a guide video posted just yet, we invite you to check out the one for Jyunpaku no Yogensha as they have similar play styles. By mid May, we hope to have videos for all of our Classics available on both YouTube and our official GungHo Facebook page.

  • Japan has a lot of classic Gundam games. I would love to buy some of those. Please do think about bringing some of those over. Gundam still has a following in the states. :)

    • We always appreciate suggestions, but keep in mind internationally licensed products tied to big IPs like that are tricky. You may want to try reaching out to the original publishers for those particular games.

  • Doesn’t matter if something is lost in the ages if nobody can even play it.

Hurry up and put Tomba 2 and Musashi on the damn PSN already, you’re taking too long.

  • What about Final Fantasy IV?

    Please :)

    • You may want to reach out to the original publisher for that particular title. Right now, we are focused on PSone import Classics that GungHo Japan has released.

  • I would like to see english language ps1 games plz and i doubt many people want these games so why even put them out no one wants them take a poll find out what your customers want and put those games out dont give us this kindof crap.
and while i am aloyal sony fan and am preordering the ps4 i would appreciate you guys try to make these games playable on ps4 from the news i got it wont and that sucks in a major way.

    • We don’t have any control over the PS4’s capabilities, but I hope these games will eventually be compatible as well.

We’ve gotten a lot of feedback regarding our import Classics. We understand many users will be hesitant to play a Japanese language game, but since we had the chance to make these available for the hardcore fans who were interested, we took it. We’ve already gotten a lot of positive feedback about them, but we understand these game aren’t for everyone.

  • There really needs to be much clearer indicators in the Store that these games are not translated into English. Most people who do not read the blog would not expect that the North American store sells games that require the ability to read Japanese.

    • That’s definitely something to consider in our future releases.

The old PSN storefront had a dedicated section for imports, but since that’s been removed, I understand your concern.

  • Gun to your head: which Favorite Dear would you say is the better game, taking artwork/characters/story/battle systems into account? I’ve still been tempted to buy the first that was released a couple weeks ago as Japanese practice, but now that this one is also out, I would like to know which is considered the “better” game.

    • First, let’s put the gun down and discuss this reasonably O_o

It’s a tough choice! You may as well be asking me to choose which finger to have removed or which child to sacrifice to the volcano… (the correct answers of course being left pinkie and the ugly one respectively)

The games are definitely different…but similar… like any series I suppose ^_^

If hard pressed, I really do enjoy the character portraits, sprites and world map of Jyunpaku no Yogensha. If you enjoy the overall experience of one, I still say get both ;)

I’d also recommend checking out our Facebook/YouTube video walkthrough to see Jyunpaku no Yogensha for yourself.

Enkan no Monogatari will be added some time in the near future.

  • Favorite Dear ~Jyunpaku no Yogensha~ and Evergreen Avenue… I will probably buy these and stumble my way through them. xD

    • I thank you and wish you much luck in your stumblings.

Our Favorite Dear ~Jyunpaku no Yogensha~ video is live both on YouTube and Facebook, so it may help guide you along!

  • Is there any chance for you guys to release hiragana only text games, it would really help with my studying of the japanese language. I could translate it as i play!

    • We can keep an eye out for them, and I’ll make sure to mention if a game is more Hiragana/Katakana heavy in future blogs.

Last month’s Oz no Mahoutsukai ~Another World~ RungRung has a ton of Hiragana.

Children learn that alphabet first, so games/books/etc. that are geared toward them will naturally be easier to read. Be warned though, there is still Kanji wherever you may turn.

  • More recent Japanese games to get import releases would be awesome. In fact… I wish PSN had something like a Universal side where one account can access all PSN regions. I love me some Visual Novels on my Vita.

    • I am a fan of that genre as well.

      *cough*

*hint hint* : Sentimental Graffiti (also works on the Vita – just sayin’)

  • Hi, any chance Umihare Kawase (the platformer with the school girl and fishing rod) could be released on US PSN as well?
Furthermore, any chance you could provide assistance in release PSX classics for other companies like Capcom?

    • Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely look into that one.

We don’t plan to offer any domestic publishers (or Japanese publishers with an established US presence) assistance in releasing their PSone Classics, but at a recent panel, I did learn that the aforementioned company already has plans to release a great deal of classics by this summer.

If you are interested in specific titles, I recommend you seek out the original publishers.

  • Firepro Wrestling please

    • A popular suggestion – for sure!

As always, we will look into this title, but we can’t make any guarantees.

      Thanks for your comment ^_^

  • Can you guys PLEASE bring ape escape to psone classics?

I mean, WHY is it not already available? Its first party, sold perfect, and was reviewed high.

    • We are not the publisher for that particular title. You may want to try contacting the company that originally released it.

  • As someone who was a massive import hound during the Saturn days, seeing these available on PSN is kinda mind blowing.
    Good work, GungHo.

  • So I have an Idea the only thing stopping me from purchasing these games is the language barrier, but what if, they came with a translated script that could be accessed anytime, like the same way the vita games and psone classics have the digital manual only now an extra option for translated script and you can access them anytime. It would be a HUGE improvement and something to really consider!

    • While we don’t have anything as fully comprehensive, our walkthrough videos for Favorite Dear ~Jyunpaku no Yogensha~ and Zero Kara no Mahjong ~Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi~ may be helpful for any who might be interested. They are currently available via the company Facebook and YouTube.

      Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Some of these RPGS I would easily pay $20 for translated, but with the language barrier for me there isn’t much point. So, more games like Zanac x Zanac please!

    • Shmups and brawlers are definitely popular suggestions for us to consider, and we will keep an eye out for them in the future!

  • I know it was released last month but I assume no one is watching that blog, is there a lot of text to have to skip and get to the battles in First Queen IV? Also wonder if buying correct parts and stuff for Vehicle Cavalier is essential because that looks doable as well except for those shop screenshots! Thanks in advance if I get a reply!

    • Hey now – 99/99 comments/replies, I’d say that blog was pretty well-watched ;)

First Queen IV, like many RPGs will have a lot of text during the story introduction, but it’s not too terribly long before battle is joined.

As for Vehicle Cavalier, we will be making a helpful menu walkthrough video for it soon. It should hopefully be available some time in May.

I was personally able to navigate the shop menus well enough, but there is definitely a bit of text to get through while customizing your load out. The general idea that, “higher numbers = better,” will serve you well there.

  • Glad to see some more Mahjong games making it to the US PSN. This one is for PS Blog staff: since you’re bringing over these PSOne imports, would you also consider bringing some PS Vita imports as well? There’s a great Mahjong game out now (Mahjong Fight Club) for PS Vita, I imported a copy of it already, but it would be nice to be able to buy the DLC (since it’s on the Japanese store, my US PS Vita isn’t able to purchase the DLC).

    • I see you directed a comment at the PS Blog staff, so I won’t touch on that topic…

Since I like to answer all the comments I see though, I will say this:

We are glad you appreciate the availability of delightful Mahjong games!

I also like your avatar pic.

  • One thing I would be interested in knowing with some of these games is whether or not the text ever advances automatically, both in gameplay and if there are any cutscenes; my Japanese is well below the point that I could call myself literate, but I do have a dictionary, but that only works if the game will wait patiently for me to look things up.

    • With the exception of the cutscenes, nearly all of these games will give you the chance to catch up. If you are playing on a PS Vita, I’d also recommend you take advantage of the screenshot function by holding down on the Touch Screen.

  • who do i talk to about getting okage shadow king released on psn as a ps2 classic? it was produced and published by sony.

    • I would suggest contacting the original publisher. Right now, we are focusing on titles that GungHo Japan has already released on their end.

  • @Antonio I meant I’m sure it’s not still being watched now since there’s a new import blog, lol.

Thanks for the reply, I think I’ll pick one of those two up today with Guacamelee with my $20 PSN card and get the other when the $10 per $50 credit from the promo comes in.

  • re:14 Haha, okay, Antonio. I realize that asking someone in the industry which game of theirs is “better” is always a very tough choice. I’m just really hard on money and try to make sure what I’m buying will be appealing to me. I think I will definitely go with Jyunpaku no Yogensha after looking at some screenshots though, as I like the visuals of it more. Thanks for your information.

  • breath of fire 3 nuff said

  • @Antonio RE: PSN Avatar Thanks! I’m holding out hope for the latest Yakuza to make it over here!

I am planning on picking up Zero Kara no Mahjong ~Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi~, and possibly the second one too, so thanks for making them available to us! BTW, Yakuza 4 is where I learned how to play Riichi style Mahjong (already knew how to play Chinese and Taiwanese Mahjong). It’s quite different and a lot of fun.

    • I love hearing how people get into hobbies, it can often be such a random set of circumstances…

We hope you enjoy the games!

  • Hmm…not really doing anything for me since I’m an idiot and don’t know any language other than English.

I presume you don’t know anything on if we’re going to get two certain oft-requested PSone franchises on the Vita any time soon?

    • Unfortunately I do not, but as I recommend to everyone, you may want to contact the publisher that originally released the game to see if they have plans to re-release it soon.

As for Vita compatibility, Sony has informed me that it’s all part of an ongoing QA process. I know they have already released a couple of updates that increased the Vita’s PSone compatibility, so it may well happen again in the future.

  • These are definately the hiddems gems, being able to play these imports on my PS Vita is priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Spelling errror, These are definately the hidden gems being able to play these imports on my PS Vita is priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don’t mean to beg but pleeeeeeeeeeeeease would there be any way to get Ore no Ryouri on the NA PSN???? I think it’s already on the PS1 classics on the JPN store. I got to play the little bit of it that was on an old demo disk and even though I can’t read Japanese it was still crazy and fun to play. Ore no Ryouri Ore no Ryouri Ore no Ryouri Ore no Ryouri pleeease :)

    • We will look into this particular title. From what I’ve seen it looks like crazy fun :)

Keep in mind, there are no guarantees.

  • TALLglassofWATER

@ 26, the vita screenshot is holding down the ps button AND the start button. NOT the touch screen.

    • For Vita games, that’s normally the case. It’s different when it comes to PSone Classics.

The normal PS Button and Start will not work. Holding down on the Touch Screen will bring up a menu that lets you adjust various settings and take a screenshot.

  • I lack the permissions required to delete this post.

I highly advise everyone disregard this spam message.

    • As you may or may not have noticed, the original spam message I warned about has been deleted.

Justice was served thanks to the PS Blog staff!

  • Cool!

Also, OBLIGATORY REQUEST FOR PSN IMPORTS RELEASE OF PANEKIT, BECAUSE BUILDING YOUR OWN TOYS IS FUN AND AWESOME, PEOPLE.

Please? It has the line “infinite crafting toy kit” in the title for a reason!

  • Oh trust me Antonio, I know the pain of knowing there are no guarantees of getting some of the great games from Japan over here but thank you for the response! Really appreciate it!

  • hey GungHo, if you guys are releasing PSone games from Japan on the US Playstation Store. is it possible to release Japan-only PS2 games on the US Playstation Store, considering that there are PS2 downloadable games on there. I’m not saying to do this ASAP, but something to consider in the future.

    • I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible. At the moment, we don’t have any specific ones in the works, but we will keep everyone informed if this changes.

  • A bit of topic, (i have asked this a million times already, but no one has replied). You guys know what’s up with Haunting Ground release on PS2 Classics. It was suposed to come out a long time ago.

    • I’ve not heard anything about that myself, but perhaps the original publisher could shed some light on the situation.

  • Any chance any of these games will be available in the EU?
    I’m interested in getting the Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi 1 & 2.

    • We don’t have any particular dates yet, but we are in the process of getting our Classics out in the EU as well.

  • Is there any chance of any of the Langrisser games coming to PSN via Gung Ho?

  • “Unfortunately I do not, but as I recommend to everyone, you may want to contact the publisher that originally released the game to see if they have plans to re-release it soon.”

Considering Naughty Dog no longer owns Crash Bandicoot, and Insomniac no longer owns Spyro the Dragon, and considering their new owner, Activision, seems to have no plans for them, this may very well mean we won’t get to see them on the Vita :(

  • Hey I don’t know how possible this is, but since you guys released Ragnarok Odyssey, have you guys ever heard of Ragnarok Battle Offline? And would it be possible to put that on XBLA/PSN? It’s a great game that I think a lot more people would enjoy if it was released on there & more Ragnarok lore for everybody to go around.
