Celebrating 15 Years Of Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo Invite

A little over 15 years ago, what was then a small Japanese studio (headed up by Kazunori Yamauchi) embarked upon on a journey that would enrich the lives of many millions of gamers. The journey that the team undertook set new benchmarks in graphics, game physics and sheer entertainment factor.

Gran TurismoGran Turismo 2

That studio eventually became known as Polyphony Digital, and the brand they created was — of course — Gran Turismo.

15 years after that seminal moment, and after who knows how many billions of miles driven collectively by Gran Turismo gamers all over the world, I am very pleased to announce a special Gran Turismo 15th Anniversary Event taking place May 15th at Silverstone Race Circuit, England.

The event will be a celebration of all that Gran Turismo has come to represent to a community of millions all over the world, and will involve many of the car manufacturers who have been part of that incredible 15 year journey.

At the event, Kazunori Yamauchi will also be making some exciting announcements about the future of the brand. Activities will be covered live right here on PlayStation.Blog, at gran-turismo.com, and on Twitter (#15YearsOfGT).

  • VITA, PS3 or PS4, don’t care. Buying!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Congratulations!, can’t wait. Unbeatable franchise.

  • No disrespect to the GT series, but, after so many titles, can’t polyphony D put out something else other than racing?

Oh here’s one – I know it was a side project for them back in PlayStation 1 days – but how about an HD version of Omega Boost or, gasp, a sequel! :D

  • Why dont you guys release GT1 and GT2 as digital copies on PSN??? I would love to have them!!

  • Awesome news waiting for GT6!!!

  • Please place Gran Turismo 2 on PSN.

  • its amazing its been that long. I still remember the 1st time GT came out for the PS2, and as everyone knows, if you wanted thee best graphic’d games, your only choice was GT. No other game even came close to what they were puting out in graphically. They were MILES ahead and better than anything else out in the market. It was mind boggling. The only drawback, if you can call it that, was as soon as you put another game in, onoce it loaded up and you saw the graphics for that game, you immediately look at the GT Disc/box and shake your head. And with each new version that cars look better and better.

  • It’s hard to believe that GT has been around for 15 years.

  • I hope it’s a psvita gran turismo game being announced and not just a ps4 early announcement that takes 4 years to come out ( remember gt5 was announced for the ps3 launch but had a lot of delays )
when the first gran turismo game released I owned the n64 and wasn’t planning on getting the playstation , gran turismo was the game that led to me owning evert playstation ever . ps1 ps2 , ps3, psp and psvita were all in my collection and ps4 will be too
thanks polyphony for that playstation love I’ve acquired but please make a psvita gran turismo

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

Another GT6 on PS3 is a waste of time and I won’t buy it. GT6 on PS4 in 2014 (to give DriveClub some room as a new launch IP) and GTV on PSV in 2013 to boost sales for the machine.

  • Congrats Polyphony Digital! Been with you since GT2 and don’t plan on stopping!

    Looking forward to exciting news!

  • GT6 on PS Vita, PS3 and PS4?

  • cool beans :)

    vroom, vroom

  • Im almost sure the car under that blue thing is the C7 Corvette, that would make one bad a$$ cover art imo.

  • Where are the promo videos that we are suppose to be able to download from PSN for the corvette and acura?

  • VITA please!

  • @11 That is moronic. Took FOREVER (and a day) for the PSP to get Gran Turismo. Yet it was announced way before that. Better to announce it when the time is right, rather than now and have people dangling around forever like with PSP… and PS3.

There’s no reason to doubt it will come to the PS Vita at some point. It’s been on every PlayStation platform thus far. So why wouldn’t it be on PS Vita?

  • GT5 was a huge disappointment.

Embarrassing “standard” cars, ugly clunky user interface, poorly thought out A Spec campaign, recycled tracks with 2D trees. The problem is PD are too insular, they have no community manager to show feedback is being considered, they don’t outsource to help with the massive undertaking they embark on and the result is a half baked game that requires countless updates to fix.

Not going to get sucked in with nice looking, expertly edited promo videos again. Thank the Lord Evolution are releasing DriveClub. A bit of competition might force PD to get with the times.

  • Some kind of collection would be awesome!
I missed out on a lot of GT games.

  • Dear Polyphony,

A certain competitor can churn out sequels on a competing console faster than you guys can yet the games they make have scored higher and have had the admiration of racing game fans. You guys still have the upper hand when it comes to the style but their product does not have silly limitations like Premium and Standard car models. I think you know where I’m coming from and I wish you guys can make your games faster. Focus on the thrill of driving race cars and cut out the fat like driving economical jalopies from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Gran Turismo 5 really came with so much delay and waiting only to still come out with shortcomings like upscaling PS2 car models, a half baked course designer, courses like Autumn Ring or Trial Mountain looked particularly bad and were just upscalled in HD, and this whole B Spec nonsense has got to go. Focus instead on content that gamers will find most fun with, the racing. This will sound rather blasphemous but if you guys are going to include Autumn Ring or Trial Mountain again for the next GT game, please make them look good. Though to be honest, not putting them back would be more ideal.

  • So……. we’ll have another racing game where all the AI opponents race in a “follow the leader” style, and have a selection of hundreds of cars that should never even be considered to be put on a track cuz they suck horribly with their 35hp motors… and to top it off, more boring license tests that no one can get golds on unless they spend months on it?? I’ll stick to Grid 2.

  • Nice. Hopefully something to PS3/PSV/PS4.

  • well they are making GT6 so i guess they gonna announce it that they are making with ps4 engine specs and they will downgrade to ps3… and videos and game play hopefully

  • In regards to releasing something/anything on the Vita, they/Sony/PD better at the very, VERY…. VERY least release an HD/remastered collection of all or some of the GT games throughout the series (sort of like how they’re doing with the Jak & Daxter collection and quite possibly a Sly collection)!!!

I know one of the posters above mentioned something about re-releasing any or all of the previous GT games being difficult due to having to obtain certain rights all over again, but surely there’s something that can be done or worked around so that fans who never played any of the previous entries can experience them for the first time (me). The reason why I say that they can/should find a work-around is because one would think that surely Sony has thought about one day releasing all or some of the GT games in the form of PSone classics/collection/etc. etc..

Anyways, here’s hoping something is announced for the Vita so that Sony’s best selling franchise can possibly help improve Vita sales from here on out (because increased sales would 100%, definitely follow a GT Vita release)!?!?!

  • Red Rock Valley Speedway!, it’s been ages since I last played my favorite GT race track :(

  • @49 agreed!

  • I loved the GT series but this gen has sucked for this franchise

  • that-acmilan-guy

    I agree with Mattsta001 completely.

  • Did the obvious pass? Silverstone is coming to GT. I’m not saying it is guaranteed, but hosting it at Silverstone, seeing the new Silverstone Wing complex and circuit in digital format can only mean that Silverstone will be released for GT5 as DL content (hopefully) and fully integrated into GT6.

  • Am I the only one who thinks there was game-like footage interspersed with live action footage in that, as a way to fool/test their graphics? Or do I just have funny eyes?

  • Definitely a mix of footage on Silverstone.

  • I would love a Vita Gran Turismo.

  • PS3: GT5 Spec 3.0
    PS4: GT6 Prologue in 2014
    PS4: GT6 in 2015

  • VITA!!!

  • I know the licensing must be a cluster @#%! but I would LOVE to be able to play ps1 / ps2 era GT’s on my Vita or PS3/4!!!!! PLEASE!!! :D

  • Cool.

  • I hope Gran Turismo on the powerfull PS Vita ! I remember the great ‘Gran Turismo’ in my PS1 on the year 1998 (very nice game) :)

    Thanks !!

  • close to 70% trophies GT5. Hardest platinum trophy ever created.

  • I need a GT on Vita (Natively) & PS4, Sony!

  • If there’s a Vita and PS3 version of the same iteration, I bet it’ll be to prototype various cross play options (second screen, simultaneous multiplayer, cross-controller, etc.) for a future PS4 iteration (as powerful as it is, the PS3 isn’t optimized for connecting to the Vita as a second screen and such). But we’ll see. Crossing my fingers for a Gran Turismo Vita that has full career mode, unlike the PSP version (which was fun nonetheless, just empty of progression).

  • I think poster 81 “Logan22” got it right. Sony has mixed live and game footage from GT6 on the PS4! If the use the PS4 as their lead development platform, converting GT6 down to the PS3 and Vita should be relatively easy.

I’m hoping for simultaneous release on all 3 platforms!

Check the video out for more info and a breakdown on the GT 15th Anniversary video above.

    http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O9Sq1cmgY3Q

  • The Video is for GT6 to be on PS3, but They might have a Vita & PS4 Game in the Near Future.
Look at GT PSP, which took a few years after the PSP Launched to Release, so while PSVita may get a GT Game in the near Future, but the Video above is not it. The Graphics look like GT5s competitor from the “Green Box that starts with X”, Forza Motorsport 4’s Autovista Mode, but unlike Forza 4, which only has GT6 Caliber Graphics in a mode that only has a few STATIC Cars, Gran Turismo 6 has Insanely detailed Graphics on everything in Race Mode as seen from the Preview Vids.
