Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII on PS3

Have you been counting down the minutes until Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII? If so, you’re definitely in luck as we have a slew of updates for you.

If you’ve been asleep since last September when we unveiled the game, here’s the gist of it: The world of Gran Pulse is sinking into the sea and what remains is Nova Chrysalia. With only thirteen days remaining until the end of the world, you have full control of Lightning and it is your mission to save as many souls as possible. Along the journey, you will encounter familiar faces and engage new foes in all new lands. Now that you’re caught up, you’re ready to watch the Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII trailer — right here!

A couple things to note: First is the return of Snow Villiers, with a completely new look. He’s got new hair, and equal if not more abundant amounts of swagger. Why are Snow and Lightning at odds now? What has transpired over the time between these two former allies? Sorry, but you’ll just have to wait a bit to find out these secrets.

If that wasn’t the first thing you noticed, then it’s probably the area that looks nothing like from either Final Fantasy XIII or Final Fantasy XIII-2. This is Yusnaan, one of the four vast lands that compose Nova Chrysalia. Yusnaan is a bustling land bathed in pure entertainment, bright lights, and non-stop awesomeness.

In typical Final Fantasy fashion, Lightning Returns features insane monsters, abilities, and spells. We’ll be revealing much more in the coming months, so stay tuned!

We’re also unveiling our final box art for North America!

Lastly, the biggest question we’ve received everywhere we go is “When is it coming out?” Finally, we’re confirming that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will hit PlayStation 3 in North America on February 11th, 2014!

I’m just hoping to see versus Xlll on E3 this year or in TGS.

+ FearMonkey on June 6th, 2013 at 8:43 am said:

Yes. can’t wait! I loved FFXIII and XIII-2 and Platinum’d them both, really looking forward to this. :)

Any chance we’ll be getting the Japanese audio track this time? I swear I don’t know how much more of Troy Baker as Snow I can take. Seriously. His voice grates on my ears. Thanks! ^_^

“In typical Final Fantasy fashion,”

Dear Square,

Final Fantasy jumped the shark in Final Fantasy X. It’s a good game, but nothing close to the epic game that FF IV and FF VI are. FF 13 is terrible, it has destroyed the brand so badly for me that I’m not interested in buying anything from SE that has the words “Final Fantasy” in them ever. E.V.E.R.

I’m currently on DQ 6 on the NDS. So I would like to thank you for your past work.

LOL at the line “Have you been counting down the minutes until Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII?”.

Yeah, if so, you’ve only got 360,000 left!

+ Gadirok on June 6th, 2013 at 9:15 am said:

This is not the Final Fantasy I was looking for.

Hopefully versus makes a show at E3.

I noticed Chantal Strand! Recognized her voice as Lacus Clyne from Gundam Seed!

Will having a save data from the previous game(s) give us something like it did with ffxiii-2?

Yeahh!! can’t wait!!

+ Apeman24 on June 6th, 2013 at 9:55 am said:

Cool, a release date. I will pick it up day one. I hope XV AKA versus XIII, will be at E3, and be available as promised, ONLY FOR PLAYSTATION NATION!

I have a question and I know this is kind of dumb, but, how will this go on my trophy list? Will it look nice next to my other FF titles or will it go to the L section?

+ DirjelJunshin on June 6th, 2013 at 10:26 am said:

It’s so frustrating that we are getting PS3 games after the non-backwards-compatible PS4 is launched.

It’s a terrible decision by Sony, and really makes me not want to buy a PS4.

+ Ryumoau on June 6th, 2013 at 10:30 am said:

sorry no way am i spending full price on another FF13 spin off. I’ll rent this from gamefly next year.

+ CommandingTiger on June 6th, 2013 at 10:44 am said:

Meh, not remotely interested.
Love the characters in the first XIII, played XIII-2, the ending kinda sucked… and only having 2 characters too.
Now Lighting fights Noel and Snow?? Yuck. Why Snow of all character? I’ll just be buying The Last of Us… it’s the same voice actor.
It’s no longer a 1st day purchase, maybe at 20$. I got mostly all final fantasies, (except 9)

What I would want would be Final Fantasy Type-0 on Vita or PSP. That one looks Badass.
Haven’t heard of Versus in a Long Time…

+ Genduke on June 6th, 2013 at 11:04 am said:

Will definitely have to pick this up. FFXIII-2 was great, will be interesting to see how the story works together.

I wish you guys would release Star Ocean: Second Story either as a PS One Classic or the PSP Version on the PSN. One of my favorite games, but I can’t play it on my PSP-GO :(

Also eagerly awaiting the FFXIV Reboot. Hope that my PC can handle it, but otherwise will get the PS3 version.

+ MushThePainter on June 6th, 2013 at 11:14 am said:

I loved 13(platinumed it), but I couldn’t get into 13-2.. I think I’ll pick it up again soon (13 bucks at GameStop). I would love to see FF15 at E3

verry good! It look like a winner

+ DarkOne_PR on June 6th, 2013 at 11:44 am said:

Square enix i agree with everyone here… Why didnt u let FF13 with just one installment? Everyone hate it except for FF newcomers (who are a little few) who dont know how really awesome a real FF game is.

For real with the development time on this crap games u should have invested in KH3, FFvs13 and FF7 remake.

U should have left Lighting with FF13 and the rest should of been hentai XD

+ D-Squad3 on June 6th, 2013 at 11:58 am said:

Dear Square Enix,

Nobody cares about Final Fantasy XIII, the fans only care about Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Kingdom Hearts III, you know the games that you guys aren’t making? The one that will sell millions and millions of copies, the smart move that you guys don’t want to take.

7 years, we’ve been waiting for Versus XIII, it’s absurd how long we’ve been waiting for that game and if there’s nothing about it at E3, well then you guys may consider yourself as the worst company this generation.

By the way, the cover art is lacking, I mean the logo doesn’t even have an iconic symbol, it’s just letters which is lame.

+ saintaqua on June 6th, 2013 at 12:14 pm said:

That’s great Lightning, and I’m gonna let you finish, but…we still want news about Versus, KH3 and Type Zero more than this.

Don’t get me wrong, this looks way better than I’d originally imagined, and I will be buying it unless PS4 is so loaded with RPGs early on there’s no time…
I’m glad we’ll finally get to end this series. XIII and it’s sequel have been the two FF games I’ve cared least about doing everything in…partially because they feel so disconnected and there are no real collectibles past the trophies.

+ Welmosca on June 6th, 2013 at 12:35 pm said:

Hoou Lightning looks badass and as always Square your CGIs are top notch…but I have a question about the game….does it include any type of lighting effects or is it like the 1st screens released where there was no lighting effects in the game at all?

+ Welmosca on June 6th, 2013 at 12:44 pm said:

Ah I forgot to mention the box art looks simple but beautiful as well.

Also lots of people criticizing FFXIII and its quality….when the motive for that is very obvious….FF turned into a multiplat game and you cant expect good things from a game that was exclusive before and afterwards needs to deal with the limitations of 360.

+ AizawaYuuichi on June 6th, 2013 at 1:01 pm said:

Just like the majority of the other posters here, I cannot begin to describe my complete and utter lack of interest in this game. 9 chapters into FFXIII and I gave up on it. Could not stand anymore of its BS. Now we’re getting a second sequel to that horrible mess, that absolutely NO ONE I’ve ever talked to has asked for. All the while complaining that games you only publish, not develop, aren’t selling as well as you’d like… guess why? People are trying to send you a message, and you seem to have your hands covering your ears, going “LA LA LA LA” as loud as you can. Start giving us what we want… you know, good games? And maybe you’ll see your fortunes turn around.

You know I’m looking forward to this. I actually really liked a good amount from XIII, XIII-2 was not loved as much but still has a little bit of love from me.
Now I do like the classic ATB system but hey if you want to experiment with stuff why not use a different name for it? Or not :P as it’s your IP and people need to understand that :)
Either way you’re getting my money on KH HD, X/X-2 HD, maybe Final Fantasy XI: Seekers, plus possibly Final Fantasy XIV: Realm Reborn CE (Not sure if I’ll get the PS3 or PC probably PS3… but who knows), but for sure getting Lightning Returns.
Although hoping for a Collector’s Edition for this :D

I hate to break this to every but at the beginning Square Enix announced they were working on Three games in the Final Fantasy 13 series. 13, 13- Agito, and 13- Versus. Agito and Versus were both codenames.

We got 13, 13-2 and now 13- Lightning returns. Sorry this game you are looking at is Final Fantasy 13 Versus.

+ OneMoreVillain on June 6th, 2013 at 4:41 pm said:

Also if you have not played 13-2 and only played 13. You are missing out. Yes 13 was a big slap in Fans faces but 13-2 had many redeemable qualities that and everything I have seen so far is making me actually thrilled for this one.

+ GEMINIVice on June 6th, 2013 at 6:05 pm said:

Really not sure about this game….

I mean, I’ve liked all the main Final Fantasy games that I’ve had a chance to play (VII, VIII, X, XII, and even XIII).

But I passed on XIII-2, because I was honestly satisfied with how things ended in XIII. That and I really didn’t take the care for playing as Lightning’s little sister and some new fella named Noel. I did like the original cast (for the most part) in XIII, so that’s the only reason I’m considering this…because Claire is back in the driver seat.

But FFX is getting an HD remaster later this year and I already know that’s a day 1 for me (gotta see Lulu again). And I’m still hoping that FFXII will get the HD remaster treatment as well (this is the game that should be bundled with FFXHD anyway instead on FFX-2). May not even have time for this game.

*May not have time for this game….being Lightning Returns*

I think it’s enough for FFXIII.
I think you should try a new one or at least continue a better one like FFVI or VII.

really love how you break down all the goodies we need to know :D

also the JPN edition has a “Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Ultimate Box”

will the US also have a similar style of box?

nice work!

There’s an elephant in da room that yall seem to have forgot about………………………………………………NEW DISSIDIA FOR VITA AND/OR HOME CONSOLE!!!!!!!!

With that said, I’m a little bit tired of the XIII hate. IMO XII and XIII were about on par with each other. I was one of the many who DELUDED themselves into believing XII was GREAT cause Square was still at it’s prime (X-2 was squareenix first ff train-wreck-money-milking idea produced). But upon a second play through you realize the game has nothing to offer because somewhere midway through the story gets rushed and before u knows it ur whoopin da crap out a whatz-his-name (final boss) who’s story was barely fleshed out. Not to mention there was no romance between Vaan and Ash like some pictures from the Limited edition guided hinted at, and if the characters don’t interact on a more person and human level, their all largely forgettable for me. VII, VIII, IX, and X all had the romance element and their all largely beloved.

+ brawlbull on June 7th, 2013 at 2:13 am said:

Needless to say, XIII suffers from the same pitfalls as XII, but that doesn’t make either one “Bad Games”. Personally I heard the negative feedback and decided to hold off on XIII, got it for $20 ish bucks on an Amazon “Lightning deal” believe it or not lol and for that price its more than worth it as will be XIII-3. I Platnumed both XIII and XIII-2 (bought ltd edition day 1 with all DLC, most not worth it) and XIII-2 is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than XIII. I was one of the biggest sceptics, but trust me YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH SERAH AND NOEL, the soundtracks for XIII and XIII-2 are PHENOMENAL and if thats not good enough, they added an addictive Pokemon element to da dang thang lol.

+ HyperModexMonsta on June 7th, 2013 at 11:15 am said:

Awesome, Snow looks awesome. I can’t wait to see why Lightning and Snow are going at it. Even though, i only played FFXIII (didn’t beat the whole thing), i am looking towards this.

+ MrDaBucket on June 7th, 2013 at 12:25 pm said:

Oh Japan…taking 5 years to make a game, not making enough money back, and then proceeding to release what’s on a technical level similar to the original game 2 more times to save money.
Just show us FF15 already, because we stopped caring.

Seriously, originality used to be what made the FF series.
Sad state of things in that part of the industry. Naughty Dog cranks out an amazing hit every 2 years, and Squeenix takes forever to make an engine, and then is forced to beat a dead horse with it.
