Octodad: Dadliest Catch Crashes, Stumbles, and Flops on to PS4

Have you ever felt out of place? Just don’t feel you’re good enough, no matter how hard you try? Maybe you’ve got something to hide from the world. Maybe you’re not really the perfect human husband and father of three, but actually an octopus. This is what Octodad: Dadliest Catch is all about. You have a loving wife. You have adorable kids. They, however, have no idea of your secret cephalopod nature.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch on PS4

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is the first slapstick fatherhood simulator, and we’re excited to say that we’ll be bringing it to the PlayStation 4 in 2014.

You may be asking yourself, “Well, what’s so difficult about being an octopus?”Well, first off, you’re an invertebrate, so you have no bones. Your body is gelatinous. As you can imagine, that makes it hard to simply move around outside of water. All those things we humans take for granted, like counteracting gravity, are a constant challenge. Oh, and you have eight arms you’ve managed to stuff into a fancy suit to form a human shape. There are hardships in Octodad’s life, to say the least.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch on PS4

The way Octodad: Dadliest Catch is played communicates this struggle through the control of Octodad’s body. Conquering the movement of this marionette made of jello is at the core of the game.

Each of Octodad’s limbs can be independently articulated in order to attempt to accomplish seemingly mundane tasks. Want to walk across the room? You get to control each wobbly step. Need to open a door? Navigate his tentacle…ahem…I mean arm to the knob and grab hold for dear life. It’s not easy to control a flopping ragdoll of a humanoid.

All of this comes together as an [in]elegant dance that often ends in the destruction of your surroundings. You’ll know when Octodad has been in a room: toppled bookshelves, broken dishes, flipped tables and every piece of furniture rearranged, as if by a bulldozer. All of this is accidental of course. You don’t like breaking things, do you?

While navigating the world, you must try not to be too conspicuous while others are watching, or do anything to draw suspicion from your family. If they find out that you’ve only been masquerading as a human, it’s game over. You love them, and it would be devastating to have them turn their backs on you for being the odd octopode out.

Octodad’s entire existence is a spectacle, and we hope that with the help of things like the sharing features of the PlayStation 4 you’ll be able to spread this insanity to your friends to brighten their day (or raise their awareness of the challenges of the octopus everyman).

If accidentally demolishing a kitchen while trying to grab a plate as a yellow flailing ragdoll makes you laugh as much as we still do after two years of development, we at Young Horses will have achieved all we’ve aspired to.

Make sure to leave any thoughts or questions below and we’ll answer them the best we can!

  • NO GIANT ENEMY CRABS

  • LOVE Octodad & can’t wait to play the new one on PS4!

Just a little suggestion: PLEASE give this game Move support. Hilarity shall ensue!

    • We’re definitely considering Move support! We haven’t gotten a chance to mess with it yet, but we’d love to.

  • Lol I really can imagine trying to simulate being normal with octopus arms xD funny game for sure :)

  • DePaul represent! :D Fellow DePaul student checking in. Congrats guys!!

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

This is a game for girls.

  • Honestly? This might be my favorite news from the briefing. This is incredible. Cannot wait. Any chance of somebody explaining the control scheme? I’m assuming it’s one analog stick per leg, hold a trigger to switch to arm control?

    • Sure thing.

      Legs Mode:

While in legs mode you use L2 and R2 to raise your Left and Right feet. In conjunction with this you use the Left and Right joysticks to move the leg while you’re holding down the trigger. Then you let go of the trigger to drop the foot. Repeat and swap to walk about.

      Mode Switching: Tap L1

      Arms Mode:

The Left joystick controls the horizontal or X and Z planes of movement for his arm. The Right joystick controls the lowering/raising of the arm on the Y axis by pushing forwards and backwards. You use these two together to wiggle about. Then to grab/release an object you just tap R1.

(Also if you hold down circle you can make Octodad’s entire body go limp.)

  • GOTY RIGHT HERE!

  • Looks amazing! Will play it at e3 tomorrow.

  • As someone who knew nothing about this prior to it’s showing at E3, I must say… this sounds amazing.

Just reading through the potential hilarity that can happen, when just trying to do something we can easily do confirms this as a buy for me.

    Laughs will be had.

  • Hahahahahahahahahhahahahah

I have to echo what #9 said. I had no idea about this game until the E3 demo last night, and this looks hilarious. Looking forward to it, and I’m really glad Sony is showing so much love to the indies.

  • Looks really funny. Hopefully the shipping game will have better maps/shaders on the rug and grass, and better tree models, though ;)

  • This looks hilarious, ItsNymo’s comment on adding Move support seems genius I could strap 1 to each of my kids legs and be entertained for hours!

Good work guys looks really fun!

  • Looks like a blast to play but if you’re going to have a lyric about a three-piece suit than maybe he should actually wear one in the game. Octodad deserves a vest!

  • This looks so amazing! Is that how the music will play throughout the game?

    • The music from the trailer does get used in the game, but we also have an entire score from our lead Audio guy Seth Parker that will accompany all the squishing sound effects.

  • Is there any technical reason that this needs to be on PS4? Because I sure don’t see it.

Never heard of this before, might be funny, different is good. But why not PS3?

    • You’d be surprised how much processing power is behind just making his body function while interacting with the world which is primarily made up of physics objects.

    • We’re also only an 8 person team and so we have to be especially careful about where and with what we spend our time working on. All of us work full-time jobs outside of working on Octodad, and so we can only do so much as this is our first commercial game.

  • Ps+gold coming soon , subscription is a deal breaker. Im going PC next gen

  • PS4 still has time to implement retrocompatibility with PS3 games, PS2 games and PSX digital games and decline Plus being mandatory to play online maintaining online playing free for everyone. If they don’t, I will give the thumbs down to PS4, use my PS Plus account to “buy” free PS4 games and only buy it after it has dropped it’s price dramatically or they add compatibility with PS3 in any way they want to. I encourage everyone that bought over 190 digital PS3 games supporting this company to do the same. RESPECT TO MY PS3 GAMES COLLECTION!

  • This game is really funny. Can’t wait. xD

  • This will be a querky title which is a good thing curious about this.

  • Will most def get this on my PS4 looks quite funny :)

and @ #5, what do you mean by that?? In what way?

  • I think I may have read about this in an issue of Playstation the Official Magazine a while back. This game does sound like ridiculous amounts of fun to play or just even watch. Can’t wait!
