PlayStation 4

Millions of PlayStation fans around the world just watched our annual E3 press conference — marking the beginning to what will be an incredible week at E3 — and saw the amazing gaming and entertainment experiences coming to PlayStation in the near future. Above all else, what we showed tonight is our relentless focus on gamers and PlayStation’s long-standing legacy to building a gaming universe without boundaries.

One of the highlights of our event tonight was the official unveil of the PlayStation 4 system and price of $399. The PS4 design is sleek and functional, and contains a powerful system architecture that will enable the industry’s best developers to create amazing titles. Our Worldwide Studios team has more than 30 PS4 exclusive titles in development, 20 of which will launch during the first year of PS4. The PS4 games feature 12 completely new IPs, including a game we unveiled tonight… The Order: 1886 from Ready at Dawn. We also provided updates to other exciting PS4 titles #DRIVECLUB, inFAMOUS: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and Knack.

inFAMOUS: Second Son

PS4 has incredible strength among the development community, and some of the best teams in the world displayed their ground-breaking games. Bungie Studios showed, for the first-time ever, live gameplay of the highly anticipated Destiny; Ubisoft featured Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Watch_Dogs; Square Enix showed Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV; and Warner Bros. showed the world premiere for Mad Max. We also reinforced our support for independent and smaller developers with nine new titles that will debut exclusively on PlayStation 4.

It’s clear that you’ll have no shortage of games to play when PS4 launches. Globally there are more than 140 games in development for PS4 across our own Worldwide Studios and our development partners, including over 100 that will be available within the first year.

We also announced that PlayStation Plus memberships will carry over to PlayStation 4, so members will have access to all of the benefits across PS3, PS Vita and PS4 for one price. These benefits include online multiplayer access, exclusive discounts, cloud game saves, and Instant Game Collection, which gives members a selection of games to discover and enjoy with their friends. To celebrate the launch of PlayStation Plus on PS4, we will offer #DRIVECLUB PS Plus Edition in the Instant Game Collection.

Sony Pictures Entertainment joined us onstage to announce that it is working on new original programming and unique access to entertainment content on PSN and PS4. Sony Pictures Entertainment is one of the most powerful entertainment brands in the world and we look forward to bringing our fans curated content that they’ll love.

DriveClub on PS4

In just over a year since its launch, we’ve built a library of more than 125 PS Vita dedicated games and the platform will only get stronger in the coming year. More than 85 games will launch by the end of the year, including The Walking Dead, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, CounterSpy, Destiny of Spirits, Doki Doki, Killzone: Mercenary and Tearaway.

Tearaway on PS Vita

The PlayStation 3 is heading into its 7th holiday season and our commitment is stronger than ever. The PS3 game lineup today is huge, starting this Friday with Game of the Year candidate The Last of Us, which is now the highest rated game for all platforms for 2012 and 2013. We have more than 300 other titles that will launch before the end of the year, such as Beyond: Two Souls, Rain, Puppeteer, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Gran Turismo 6. In addition, we announced a PS3 bundle for Grand Theft Auto V and a new GTAV branded Pulse Elite headset that comes with an exclusive GTA soundscape.

It’s truly a remarkable time at PlayStation. We’re on the verge of launching the most powerful gaming system ever built with the PS4 and the entire PlayStation ecosystem is expanding with the continued growth and strength of PS Vita, PS3 and PlayStation Network. I want to thank PlayStation Nation for your passion and continued support. You’re the reason we continue to innovate, explore new entertainment possibilities and push the boundaries of play. I look forward to sharing more exciting details in the near future.

  • You guys are holding the ball but with this Pay to play crap you’re starting with is making you drop it, you shouldn’t mess with what made this amazing community so amazing in the first place, you guy really should consider making plus the same way with the PS3.

  • was i the only one that read that in a Jack Tretton voice??

  • it’s a shame people have to whine about paying to play online… if you don’t want to pay, go buy a Wii U or a PC… Most of those crying already seem to have a Plus membership, which, frankly, more than pays for itself with the discounts and free games… running the servers and stuff costs money, i am perfectly fine with the idea…

i think we need more RPGs though, Sony… PS3 was lacking in them, dont make the same mistake with PS4… indie devs need to step it up in that front since none of the big devs want to take those on….

  • Please Bring Back Free Online! Thats What Makes People Stay On PlayStation! :D

  • Why pay for online… You guys would have been pure perfection had you not done this…

  • Wow Sony has did themselves this time! The PlayStation4 Looks very unique then other gaming systems and I hope to enjoy buying this upcoming system!

  • Also Sony should think about making a MineCraft edition for PlayStation!

  • … the “best place to play” unless you’re in a multigamer household in which case it’s just confusing. XBox now has a gold “family plan” and apparently a game-sharing family plan.. but it’s not clear how this applies to multi-console households. Sony has yet to say how the PS4 will work in multi-console households. If I can’t share any of my digital games with my husband’s PS3 and we both have to pay for PSPlus to play online together in the evenings… then it might end up being a lot cheaper to switch to the XB1… depending on what they offer.

I do wish that Sony would clarify their PSPlus memberships and if there is a family plan of some sort available for multiple consoles, and I also wish they would clarify the sharing of digital games. Can I buy a copy of Borderlands and still download it to both consoles and play the game online with my husband as we currently do… or will there be new restrictions in place?

It all gets very confusing and I don’t want to end up in a situation where our family gaming costs are much more expensive than they had to be because I made the wrong console choice. :(

    Please clarify multi-console family gaming!

  • I think you’re awesome, Jack Tretton. Would leave to meet you one day!

  • When I was first faced with the question of weather to buy a “Ps3” or an “Xbox 360”, I was unsure. But after looking and researching, I found that the “Ps3” had free online play, and the “Xbox 360” did not. that was the clinching factor in my choice to buy a “Ps3”.

But now… now Sony, as we move into the next generation and the dawn of the “Ps4”, you are charging us to “Pay” for are online play. The biggest factor that got me on the PlayStation boat in the first place is now swept away! I really thought you hit the nail on the head when I saw the price for the “Ps4” at “399$”. I was sold! But pay for “online play”? when I saw that my heart dropped. I know you have the new cloud serves now, but it should still be free!

I know you people at Sony must have spent a great deal of time deciding weather or not to implement this fee, but I strongly urge that you revaluate it. as I know, that you will loos a great deal of your sails.

If you plan on implementing this, Sony, count on loosing “me” as a “customer” in your revenue loss…

  • Jack you’re my hero….thanks Sony for keeping supporting the PS3…thats all I want from you being a Loyal PS playa and costumer its been 14 years.

  • It’s a shame the mindless lunatic fringe have to defend the blatant cash grab pay for play as anything other than a blatant scam and then accuse gamers as “whiners”. Give your heads a shake.

  • Do you have to get ps plus to play online? Please tell me that is only for games that have online passes

  • Please allow us to play online for free. That was one big reason how the ps3 was better than the Xbox 360

  • Paying online wouldn’t really be such a problem for me because I pay for PlayStation Plus here and there, but it doesn’t matter if I don’t have the access to online play, I don’t play much of it anyway! Here I come PS4! c;

  • I’ll be getting a PS4 and Wii U.

  • Would like to see the Video Unlimited /Music Unlimited streaming service packaged with PS Plus in one ala kart price. Different packages/different prices for the individual needs of the gamer. I was surprised when I heard vagueness in this area.

Some of us on the Home forums are sincerely wanting to hear the fate of Home.

  • i reserved mine tuesday i was wandering if theres any confirmed release date ?

  • Any updates on the HDD size capacity ? Will it be the same 120, 160, 250, 320 GIGABYTES.

  • DEC 31, 2013

  • Guys, I don’t think it’s such a big deal to pay less than 5 bucks a month for something you want to do. I also understand that this defeated one of the big positives on the playstation but with a paid service they can offer more to the consumer than ever before. Not to mention they GIVE you free games if your a plus member. 50$ a year for a lot of games where new games cost 60$, in my opinion you’re saving money.

  • I love Sony, and I love my PS3 you are doing a great job

It was an excellent E3 presentation of PS4, I’m looking forward to buy it.

    Except for
-Requirement to have PS PLUS to play multiplayer online games
    -No retro-compatibility with PS3

My sub for PS PLUS expires until 2016, it’s a great service and I plan to keep it more time, so it doesn’t affect me that much, but it’s a question of principles, it’s for that same reason that I hate MS, everywhere (PC WIIU PS3) online multiplayer it’s free, so why change this?

I think PS PLUS sells has a service on their own, a lot of my friends that are heavy players have it, some friends that doesn’t play a lot don’t, but every once in a while I play some multiplayer games with them, now they would be limited to do so, because they won’t pay for a feature they don’t use much. Please think about it.

It would be better to limit some premium features like its done currently on PS3, than multiplayer online play.

About retro-compatibility with PS3, I think you should implement a special PS4 model with it, I wouldn’t mind to pay $100 or 150 dlls extra for a system with retro compatibility.

  • Wonderful conference guys! Gotta love Playstation!

However on a sadder note, PS Plus required to play PS4 games online : ( Don’t get me wrong, PS Plus is a great program but I still of course would rather have it free…

And I hope we continue to receive solid vita support into 2014 and beyond *still crosses fingers for Grand Theft Auto for vita*

  • Why would you charge for online multiplayer? That is something Xbox users would do.

  • The reason theyre doing this playstation plus thing is so our accounts tht have credit card info wont be stolen and another benifit is for all the people that play shooters if Playstation gets more money they can partner up with COD and we will get the maps the exact same day xbox gets them thts why were trying to do this and some playstation games can play free with out PS+

  • i cant wait for this to come out!! im excited for the campouts cause lets face it.. it’s almost inevitable.

  • I was/ or am hardcore Xbox but with all the restrictions they are implenting with the Xbox One, I think ill have to move to PS4 this winter. Thank you sony for not being a bunch of tard faces.

  • Put Minecraft in it! mostly every gamer will buy it!

  • Totally sold on the PS4. :) I own the PS3 and 360, with a slight preference to the PS3. I would be open and choose one system to buy this holiday season I told myself. With the lower price, more powerful hardware and lack of all the DRM Microsoft is trying to force upon people you made that choice real easy.

Even the Playstation Plus looks like a worthwhile investment, the free games totally make it worth the price.

  • this paying for online gameplay stinks . Xbox one is terrible too . Now for xbox one you have to be able to connect to the internet every 24 hrs. or you cant play any game and no backwards compatibility . You guys are making terrible decisions too paying for internet YOU GUYS LOST ME AS A COSTUMER AND SO DID MICROSOFT!!

  • If sony makes us pay for ps3 for online gaming im done with this video game thing !!!!!

  • PS4 looks great, but to play multiplayer online you wil need a PS Plus membership. I think if you had to add PS users to pay this is a great way because of free games and many discounts and things like that, and done in a good way that you dont have to pay for movies and tv only multiplayer online. I think this could have been done differently like maybe makeing PS4 cost more or PS4 controllers cost more or something like that. Some of my friends curently have xboxs and say that they are going to get the PS4 but now all but two of them are going to get the xbox one because of PS paying for online. I think you have done this in a good way and also a good way to earn money but in a way you have lost money and have lost something that PS was known for.
