Sportsfriends E3 Update

Hello PlayStation.Blog readers!

I’m here to give you an update on our coming PSN game, Sportsfriends. Here’s a new teaser:

Last time I posted here, we were still finishing up our Sportsfriends Kickstarter drive. Thanks to some of you, we were successfully funded, and since then we’ve been working on the games!

We’re at E3 this week showing some of the games, directly on PS3 hardware. As part of the E3 fanfare, we want to talk about some of the new features we’ve been working on.

To start with, let’s talk about Super Pole Riders, which has seen a radical overhaul since the free browser version. Below you can see one of the new arenas, illustrated by Bennett himself.

Super Pole Riders

You’ll note that there are four players there. The game now supports 1v1 and 2v2. Two-on-two is especially crazy, with poles flying everywhere. We’re also thrilled with the new control scheme. It feels nicely direct to rotate your pole using the analog stick.

Hokra, too, will feature some graphical updates and a bunch of new features and arenas. The new arena layouts – which feature walls, different numbers of goals, and “nets” that slow down the players – make the game even more replayable. Here’s a sneak peek at one of our favorite new arenas, Tokyo:

Ramiro is also working on an arena builder that lets you make and save your own custom arenas. Part of the idea is that we want players to be able to design their own “home court.”

Johann Sebastian Joust has also seen a graphical overhaul. Er, well, I’m not sure that “overhaul” is even the right word, since the alpha prototype doesn’t even have graphics! But we’re thrilled to announce that Montreal-based artist Dominique “Dom2D” Ferland is doing the visuals.

Johann Sebastian Joust

You might be asking yourself, “Why does J.S. Joust need graphics at all?” After all, it’s a game that’s about looking at each other, in the space in front of the screen. That’s true, but we wanted to frame the game in the right way and set the right mood. Dom’s animated baroque characters perfectly complement the Bach music, and we think they’ll provide a nice “entrance” into the game.

I’ve also been adding a slew of new gameplay features, including choose-your-own-music, a traitor mode, sudden death, freeze directives, and a resurrection power that allows dead players to bring themselves back to life if they remain still enough – that is, if the other players don’t interfere! Of course, you can still play the original game without any of the optional modes, but I wanted to allow players to tweak the base system. Oh, and there are some hidden “taunts,” but you’ll have to find them on your own…

Finally, the BaraBariBall team has been hard at work on the core game system, trying to make the combat as dynamic and replayable as possible. Read up on the new clashing system here in the online manual.

BaraBariBall

Noah has continued to show the game at exhibitions and tournaments around the world (including UFGT in Chicago), gathering valuable playtest data. In case you’re looking for some high-level tournament action, we’re planning to bring BaraBariBall to EVO this year – stay tuned.

That about does it for this update. We’re still hoping for a Fall release, and can’t wait to share these games with all of you!

  • PS4 still has time to implement retrocompatibility with PS3 games, PS2 games and PSX digital games and decline Plus being mandatory to play online maintaining online playing free for everyone. If they don’t, I will give the thumbs down to PS4, use my PS Plus account to “buy” free PS4 games and only buy it after it has dropped it’s price dramatically or they add compatibility with PS3 in any way they want to. I encourage everyone that bought over 190 digital PS3 games supporting this company to do the same. RESPECT TO MY PS3 GAMES COLLECTION!

  • @1

Blah blah blah…just keep your PS3 genius, or wait for Gaikai. It’s a new world, get with the times.

  • Yeah even though I’d rather play free online multiplayer, I honestly don’t have a problem using ps+ to play online, besides it feels like a win to me cause ps+ always give us great stuff and it’s just multiplayer, at least it’s not like we have to use ps+ to do everything online like the xbox

  • What’s with those thankfully small number of BC whiners? This is just a gamer thing, which is also the biggest whiners. When I replaced my old car’s A/C, I didn’t whine when I got a new car “why can’t my new car use my old air conditioning unit?” Go ahead and have your boycott of a few malcontents. I already pre-ordered the PS4. And I’m keeping 2 of my PS3’s while I work down my enormous backlog.

  • STFU and talk about this great collection of multiplayer gems!

  • LMAO @1, get with the times buddy, keep your ps3, wait for Gaikai or dont get a ps4 simple as that.

  • very excited about this one. thanks for the update!

@pablofsi08, I think you are posting in the wrong forum. But I think sony may surprise you. I bought limbo on PS3 when it came out, and was wishing I had waited till it came out on VIta (love indie platformers on vita)…but, what do you know? I already own Limbo on vita (b/c of PS3 purchase). Point? It is in their best interest to allow as much cross PSN compatibility as possible, but it makes sense not to promise it till they know it will work (and how).

    anyway – sportsfriends yay!

  • I played BariBariBall at the Two5Six Conference. Really fun!

  • @ pablofsi08

Aww come on! ban this guy already. He keeps posting the same sh’ t in every thread. :(

  • I agree, the first post guy is a MS troll and paid by them. and this old man hates trolls. I’ve seen him on other PS sites and forums.

Anyway, after reading about this game and watching the preview…I am thoroughly confused.

  • honestly i wont mind, UNLESS its like xbox, on xbox if someone on your xbox has gold, the other accounts still cant play online, IF all the accounts on my ps4 require ps plus each, i will stick with ps3 for a few more years and not bother, my little brother plays on my system too, and other family when they visit, i dont want to have to have ps plus on every single damn account for them to play MP on my system when my account already has it, it better stay like the ps3 where content on all accounts are useable, idc if they make it where all your stuff can only be on ps4 system aslong as all the accounts on my ps4 will be able to use it, and requiring ps plus is kinda dumb, most of us already have it lol, the only people who dont just cant afford it basically, shouldnt punish them, just make more features ps plus only

  • @1, I’dbe willing to pay 500$ for a PS4 with PS3.

Will we be able to transfer our classic PS1 games to PS4?
    Like with the Vita/PSP/PS3?

  • @12, Xbox One announced at e3 that if you have 1 paying Gold member, the other users can use it as well now.
So Sony needs to promise us the same. but with 2 PS4 that can be saved at once instead of just 1 like Xbox.
If both PS4 can play online at the same time, it would give huge avantage over the Xbox One, not so much for thoses on PC. (But PCs are expensive if you want a good one that’ll last a max of 3-4 years.)

  • All of you are ranting over bs.
I’m here for Sports Friends. It looks fantastic. I’ve needed a Move game for the longest time. This is it. :)

  • @13: Unfortunately no, the PS4 won’t support PS1 or PS2 Classics.

Potential for it through Gaikai in the future, but that’s it.

  • I tried this at PAX East and again at E3 with some other Playstation MVPs It’s hell of a fun game to play with a groupe of friends.
