This is Chris from Ragtag Studio, a small indie game developer out of Chicago. We are giving life to a new game called Ray’s the Dead! Ray’s the Dead is an action adventure game where you are the leader of a zombie army. We are excited to announce that Ray’s the Dead will be available as a downloadable title on PlayStation 4!

Ray’s the Dead stars Raymond La Morte, a newly resurrected zombie on a quest to find out how he was killed, who killed him, and most curiously, why is there a strange light bulb sticking out of his head? In this ‘80s-inspired romp, you’ll get to experience the two unique stories of Ray intertwined by fate. As you terrorize American suburbia with your zombie army, you’ll also uncover playable memories from Ray’s life. You’ll be able to experience the events that led to his untimely demise first hand!

Sounds cool, but how does it play? A bolt of lightning activates the bulb lodged into Ray’s brain, giving him the power to convert and command the recently deceased into zombie minions! One by one you add to your numbers by pulling zombies out of their graves, or converting fallen foes. You can then use your new buddies to accomplish a variety of different goals, including overcoming obstacles, navigating the environment, and solving puzzles. If you’re a fan of Pikmin or Overlord, you will feel right at home.

The land of the living is a tough place to be if you’re a zombie. It’s full of angry people that just want to make you more dead. They’re armed and dangerous, so you’ll have to use your zombies to do what zombies do best: command them to jump out from the dark forest, crash through windows, and come streaming out of buildings to surprise and overwhelm the enemy. On your quest you’ll meet new types of zombies with the unique abilities you’ll need to accomplish your goals. For every human type you meet, there is a corresponding zombie waiting to be added to your army. You’ll have to use all of your brains to figure out which zombie is right for each challenge that Ray will face on his epic journey!

Ray's the Dead on PS4

Ray’s the Dead has been a labor of love for the three of us at Ragtag, and we are thrilled out of our brains to be bringing it to PS4. With Sony’s focus on releasing games that deliver unique and refreshing experiences, PS4 became the natural choice for our game.

We hope you are as excited about Ray’s the Dead coming to life as we are! Please stay tuned over the coming months as we reveal more exciting information about the game. For now, I’ll see you in the comments!

  • Gotta give these guys some love. Was one of the better games at the Indie Megabooth at PAX East, despite the bugs in the build they had, and the premise is golden. Much love from me.

    • Thanks Triscy! Thanks for checking out the game at the MEGABOOTH, and for being tolerant of our early build hiccups! Appreciate the love!

  • Game looks great.

I have a question that’s been on my mind since the press conference though. How did it feel when Sony returned your phone calls? ^_^

    • Thanks FearMonkey,

Our experience with Sony has been amazing so far. As soon as we showed them the game, they ‘got’ it right away, and things have been going swimmingly ever since! They have a great team, and are doing great things.

  • I like those type of games, definitely gonna try it on PS4
    also nice music :)

    • Thanks GeoDarky! The music in the trailer is composed by Jake Kaufman. He’s a great guy that’s done music for many games like the recent Double Dragon, and the forthcoming Shovel Knight. We are excited to be working with him on Ray’s the Dead! We have a super cool line up of musicians helping us out with the project. Stay ‘TUNEd’ for more info on our soundtrack in the coming months! (couldn’t resist!)

  • This looks great! Any word on multiplayer or anything? Can’t wait to see more.

    • Hey Lemondish! We have a million ideas for things we’d love to do with multiplayer, but as we are only a team of 3, all of our resources have us focusing on our elaborate single player campaign for now. But we would love to get that going down the road!

  • PS4 still has time to implement retrocompatibility with PS3 games, PS2 games and PSX digital games and decline Plus being mandatory to play online maintaining online playing free for everyone. If they don’t, I will give the thumbs down to PS4, use my PS Plus account to “buy” free PS4 games and only buy it after it has dropped it’s price dramatically or they add compatibility with PS3 in any way they want to. I encourage everyone that bought over 190 digital PS3 games supporting this company to do the same. RESPECT TO MY PS3 GAMES COLLECTION!

  • love the artwork, the game looks great! : )

  • PS4 HAS GAMES

    xD

I prefer Plus to play online because we can get a better online service like Xbox Live Gold.
As that old proverb sayd “If you want a good service you need to pay for it”.

Also, PS+ has a lot of subscriptions. (yes this acc of mine dont have, but we play with my brother’s acc).
I think almost all americans have PS+

  • Oh man the art style reminds me of VanillaWares games I’m in.

  • Day 1, really glad this is coming to PSN , been wanting to know more ever since it was shown on PAX

  • Wow I really want to play this, looks fantastic! Loving the soundtrack too! lol

    • Thanks very much Wolfie-san! I left a bit more info on our soundtrack in a comment above. Please check it out!

  • Not planning on getting a PS4 any time soon, but I did upvote this on Steam Greenlight!

  • while you’re so nice in relpying to our comments, do you mind me asking the experience working with the ps4 dev kits?

  • This game looks amazing and really fun. I’m just curious, since I’ve never played Pikmin or Overlord… would New Little King’s Story on the Vita also be another game in this genre? Because if so, then my plan to buy this Day One on the PS4 have just been fortified with awesome (and vitamin C). Absolutely love all of the indie goodness that will be coming to Sony’s consoles in the future, and this was one of the more unique looking games.
Also, I agree with RWBRT, the graphic stylings do somewhat remind me of a Vanillaware title. Very, very well done, crisp and detailed, hand-drawn assets. Can’t wait to play this on my brand new PS4!

    • Ray’s the Dead definitely has a lot in common with Little Kings Story, particularly with the control mechanic. Our similarity to Pikmin is largely how we let the player run around the screen with a single avatar, but that avatar is followed by his little army. You can then be precise with sending your little troops out to fight, destroy barriers, move objects, etc.

Ray’s the Dead, Pikmin, and Little Kings Story are all similar in this way. Thanks for your enthusiasm!

  • This game has a quirky appeal to it which has piqued my interest!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Played this at day 3 ofE3 and I am glad I did. The independent section at E3 for the PS4 was awesome! I am happy a big corp. like Sony is supporting the smaller developers. Loved the art, and it was funny. I’m looking forward to the post for Secret Panchos.

Like Sony says Sony <3 Devs,
    and in turn….
    so do I.

  • PS3 and PS4 are completely different architectures.

It’s like asking to play Mac games on PC, it’s not easy especially with how powerful the PS3 was.

Now to talk to the devs… I’d really like to know if there’s a Vita version, if there’s a PS3 version coming later, and how many copies you have to buy to get all the versions. I love Cross-Buy.

    • Hey MakaiOokami!

Right now we have no plans for a PS3 version. As you mention, the architecture is so different it would be far more work than a small three man time like us could handle.

However, we are very interested in bringing this to the Vita! Nothing is set in stone yet, but we are looking into it to see what it takes to make that a reality. We love cross by too! We are doing our best to make it happen.

  • Looks awesome it’s just so hard waiting for an awesome game.

  • I love it when a small, low bugget teams, can manage to make games that are not less fun than other high budget 10000 people team’s games.

  • At this point, there are wayyyy more indie games I’m looking forward to play on PS4 than full-priced retail games. You guys just got added to my list! Thanks a LOT for getting me excited about the next generation of games guys! I was worried it was just going to continue on the path of more and more redundant FPSs but I’m happy to see that the ease of development on PS4 is allowing really small teams to create awesome and unique titles for it!
