Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus Coming to PS3 This Holiday

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus on PS3

Since completing the Ratchet & Clank Future saga (Tools of Destruction, Quest For Booty, and A Crack in Time) we’ve had a really amazing time expanding the universe of our intergalactic heroes. From creating the first four-player co-op Ratchet & Clank experience for the whole family to enjoy with All 4 One, to returning with the first all-new R&C competitive mode in Full Frontal Assault, we’ve challenged ourselves to bring new types of play to the Ratchet series.

At the same time, we love single-player Ratchet adventures. We’ve continued to generate new ideas for weapons, gadgets, and planets. It feels like the time is right to revisit Ratchet’s personal story arc.

We’re excited to announce that Ratchet and Clank are returning this year with an all new original single-player epilogue to the Future games. Under the creative direction of Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time creative director Brian Allgeier, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus is a story-driven platform adventure, with the humor and heart that make the franchise so beloved.

As you can see from the trailer, Into the Nexus has a bunch of crazy new weapons and gadgets. Gravity is one of the themes of Into the Nexus: you’ll experience zero-g space, you’ll use gravity-defying new gadgets, and you’ll manipulate gravity to solve brand new Clank puzzles.

The game will be available exclusively on PS3 this holiday, in stores and on PlayStation Network for an MSRP of $29.99. It’s our biggest downloadable Ratchet & Clank game yet, dwarfing the size of both Quest For Booty and Full Frontal Assault. We’ll be bringing you more news soon – and for exclusive preview coverage of the game be sure to check out IGN’s preview and initial thoughts.

As always, for all the latest, stay tuned to the Insomniac Twitter and Facebook page. I’ll try to answer whatever questions I can in the comments below.

  • I can’t say how glad I am that Insomniac are going back to th original single player campaign style. The most memorable and nostalgic series in my childhood was the original trilogy, 1,2 and 3, and TOD and CIT was an awesome move for the series. Although I was dissapointed with All 4 One, it’s nice to see that you are experimenting with new ideas. Looking forward to Into The Nexus, but wondering whether the original character models will be used again. Also is there consideraation of an R&C for next gen? It’s good to see this franchise is still progressing.

    Thanks for your time!

  • AMAZING!!! I love R&C all the way since the beginning. Was a bit disappointed with Q-Force and hated the online. Was very boring. All4One was a nice wee game and wouldn’t mind playing another like that someday. But this one looks WOW! A Crack in Time was pure amazing and was also a funny game. I’m glad this is a single player only game as it makes all feel like old times again. Those where the best!

  • If this is the epilogue you it would last or prepares us for another great story?

  • Awesome!
o release BTW, when are going to release Ratchet Deadlocked in Europe ?

    • not sure. it’s been hung up in SCEE QA for a while. Not really sure what the status is or will be

  • Sounds cool! i will buy it! :)

  • 1) Will there be a RYNO VII?

    2) Will the Groovitron make a return?

    3) Will there be any kid of collectors edition?

    4) Will this game feature Gold Bolts and Skill Points?

    5) WHY THE F**K ISN´T THIS A FULL LENGHT PS4 GAME?!?

  • Will there be a Challenge Mode? I hated that about Quest for Booty. You get to the end, and that’s it. Bleh. FFA didn’t need one, since you replayed missions.

    Hope so.

Platinum trophy? I’d assume yes, since FFA managed to get one and this is supposed to be bigger.

  • I really can’t wait to play this :D. I had a ton of fun playing through All 4 One, and Full Frontal Assault with my girlfriend, but it’s going to be nice to get back to the epic Ratchet & Clank story.

The price is fantastic too. Kudos to Insomniac and Sony. I’ll be buying this day one.

  • Hi!

First of all, excuse me if i ask some stuff that has been asked.

Here are a few questions. Answer as many or few as you feel comfortable with:

1 Why you guys waited until now instead of showing off the game at E3?

2 Is it safe to say that this will be the last single player R&C game for the PS3, or even the last R&C game at all?

3 What about Europe? Can we expect this game in december (latest) or will it slip into 2014 for us (I am Swedish)?

4 How big is the team that is working of this? How long has the development cycle been?

5 You say that the game will be smaller than A Crack in Time, but huge compared to Quest for Booty. Can you say anything yet about number of hours expected to finish it? How big percentage of the game are volountary side quests and how much is straight forward gameplay missions that you need to finish in order to advance? Can you say anything about that balance? :)

    • 1. Because we couldn’t have shown as much at E3, and it probably would’ve gotten lost against all the other noise.

      2. Never safe to say anything! Never say never!

      3. We’re aiming for simultaneous launch in Europe and US

      4. Can’t get super specific here.

      5. You can infer some rough guesses on hours based on that original comment, but even we don’t know what the hours will be because we’re still working on it. There’s definitely some non-essential areas in the game though

  • Hey James! Can you tell me who is the composer of this game please?

  • i dont think it has anything on the original 3 for ps2 , i dont know whether its because ive got older or they are thinking about it to much o_O

  • The one complaint I have about this game though.

It uses the Ratchet from A4O and FFA/Q-Force. And I really just don’t care for it. The Future Trilogy Ratchet is so much better.

It’s the perfect blend of “Bad arse” and “adorable!”

A4O/FFA Ratchet is actually really bland. I was disappointed the Movie was using that style of Ratchet as well. Sure he’s cute, but he doesn’t look bad arse anymore.

  • I understand you cut ‘Future’ from the title to keep consistency with Europe’s name, but it’s still not consistent.

North America – Ratchet and Clank Into the Nexus
Europe – Ratchet and Clank Nexus

That’s still inconsistent. I would change the North American name to Ratchet and Clank Future Nexus. That way it makes more sense to American games that it is a sequel to Crack in Time and it’s simplified by cutting out ‘Into the’.
Unless, of course, Into the Nexus is the 400 Days of Ratchet and Clank, where it is the ‘branch’ between the Future trilogy and the PS4 saga, where ‘Future’ would make a bit less sense.

Also, this is a bit more of a abstract fan request, but regions outside of Australia and Europe never got a physical copy of Quest for Booty. Since it’s only 2.3GB(3.2GB if you include other language packs), could it possibly be releasing on disc with Into the Nexus? Or limited physical copies? I already have the game, but I really want a physical copy. I’ve been on the edge of buying an import from Europe for years now, but it irks me that it doesn’t have Future in the title. I don’t like inconsistency.

    • There are always various legal, marketing, and localization regions on the titles. Sorry if that annoys you. Titling games is hard.

there may eventually be some form of physical Q4B release. we actually did get the disc certified in the US back in 2008 when we made the game for that purpose. Hopefully it’ll be available some how, some day. :-)

  • Sweet. You guys do amazing work on PS3 and I’ll be looking forward to this. Always room for more charming R&C.

Hope you guys do something on PS4 too. I’ll be looking forward to that too.

  • yeah! i knew that was the tease from facebook. I just started playing R&C HD (played on ps2 back in the day too) and it was easy to tell byt the art that it was a R&C game

  • Hello,

I prefer to have these “classics” as physical disc media.
Will this be a disc-based title?

    Thanks,

    -Liquizon

  • Sony should let us pre order all first party games on psn, i dont understand why they dont do that. And i want a psvita version, sly4 is superb on the vita, im pretty sure Into the Nexus will be great as well.

  • Wow, this just made my day when I found out about it yesterday. No offense to the team, I’ve always loved Insomniac, I just wasn’t a huge fan of those two most recent R&C games. A Crack in Time, however, is one of my favorite games ever, one I will never get rid of. I think it’s great that you branched out to experiment, but I’m really excited to see my favorite franchise return to what I once loved about it. Absolutely pre-ordering this.

  • This game is going to be so epic!!!! My son and I are big R&C fans. Please forgive my ingorance as this is my first time hearing about this game, but please Mr. Stevenson tell me you are giving us co-op. Sadly in today’s gaming seen it is so hard to find fun games my 7 year old can play with me.

  • Can’t wait!! Going to pre-order this game for sure!
The movie trailer makes me want to replay all the ratchet & clank games I have!

  • I’m so excited for this game! Even though I’ll be enjoying my PS4 this holiday season, you can bet I’m going back to the PS3 to play some of this!

I’m a little worried though. I know the Ratchet and Clank movie is coming out in a couple years, but I’ve been concerned that Ratchet and Clank might not show up in any significant way on PS4 at all. I agree with you guys getting the chance to experiment with Ratchet and Clank, but as happy as I am to see it, even this isn’t a “full” disc-based game like you guys usually release. Is there a chance Ratchet and Clank won’t make it to PS4? :(

  • @ 20 (Seeing_Red_Again) Insomniac is an indie company. They can “side” with whoever they want to, lol. Besides, you’re forgetting that they’re also still Sony-friendly, and there’s a chance Sunset Overdrive is a timed exclusive that could end up on PS4 eventually. Don’t take everything so personally! :(

  • @ 165 LiQuiZoN It’ll be in stores on a disc on the PSN as a digital copy.

Awesome to see a new R&C that goes back to the traditional ways. Love ACIT and ToD, so I’m happy to see the Future come to a close for a new age for the PS4. =)

  • If I2N[or however we abbreviate Into The Nexus] is both a decent length, and has a traditional weapons system, I may have to buy a PS3 just to play it. If it has the next leg in Ratchet’s epic [if not lonely] tale, I’m definitely buying a PS3 for it. ….although, if it’s on PSN, won’t it carry over to PS4? I thought Sony promised all prior PSN purchases will be available on the PS4?

Here’s to hoping Lombaxes avoid extinction <3

  • On a different note: I know the multiplayer experience that deadlocked had was poorly received, but I feel it’s partly the “arena only” style of that game, alongside the co-operative actions that required one player to complete tedious tasks[hacker ray anyone?] while the other enjoyed that game, that truly put a sour taste in people’s mouth’s. And A40 was even more poorly received, and although I’ve never played it myself, would it be safe to say it’s because it’s build specifically around having multiple players? Would it be too difficult to re-implement co-op play without having to tie in specific co-op tasks or story events? Possibly something similar to how the halo or gears series does it [you’re just an inexplicable copy of the main character, and the story pretends P2/P3/P4 doesn’t exist]. That’s the best of both worlds in my opinion. Just a thought for future games.

    • Co-op is a lot more than just dumping extra characters into the game world. So much has to be set-up for two characters.

A4O has been really well-received in my opinion. The amount of fan mail we get from families for that game is really amazing.

  • Haven’t seen this question answered –

I’m glad it’s single player but will there be anything like an arena area or other mini-games like the Quark arcade game to make me go back to this after playing thru the story? Quest for Booty was very straigth forward and done but the other 2 Future games always had other stuff to do. I’ll still pay $30 for a 6 hour R&C story but I like to mess around w/ different weapons in arena challenges.

  • Why do I get the feeling this game is running at 30fps or less?

    Pretty sure TOD was 60FPS.

Unless the motion artifacts in the video are from your recording device?

I remember showing TOD to friends as a graphical example of what the PS3 can do.

The insomniac decided making higher quality games didnt effect their bottom line enough so they said “screw it 30FPS is good enough”

Such a shame, a gaming shame at that.

Who wants to bet PS4/Xbone get the same treatment?

  • @174

Thats the way to do it correctly, why game developers have so much trouble understanding is a mystery.

It also allows drop in/ drop out game play so someone can join your game at any time.

To compensate on the difficulty end you just use the number of players as a multiplier for either enemy HP or # of enemies, or a combination of the two.

Then use an adaptive split screen so when both players are together facing the same way, such as linear coridors the screens merge.

Then I could maybe live without 60FPS, I just used to love that you guys were willing to push boundaries, make games others werent, you used to be kings of this thing.

    Its like this:

1st- Make beautiful, colorful games at 60FPS, and/or games with seamless coop.

    2nd- ?

    3rd- Profit.

    Your welcome.

  • I kinda liked the old R&C more like deadlock because that was just plain fun the new R&C just i don’t think are as violent as the old ones. They should make the games more violent like deadlock.

  • No that I mind but why’d you give some of the bad guys Russian accents?

Oh and I can’t wait to try the Jack in the Box weapon, that looks fun.

  • SonicTheNanobot2

Really excited for this game, especially the story of it. I loved crack in time’s ending, but it was a bit of a downer, and I hoped that something else would come after it, more about the other lombaxes. This seems to be just right, and the presentation looks like it’s back to crack in time (While I liked the stories of the two side games, they were more fun, and didn’t have the same level of emotional resonance) . Also really hoping for the cragmites to return, especially Percival, considering the location of the game. Also hoping for Angela Cross to see a return and for that to be cleared up a bit.

Any how, really glad to see this get a physical copy! I still need to get a European copy of quest for booty to finish my collection ;)

I like the graphics, but as this seems to more be running on crack in time’s engine, will it still have 3D? Just curious.

Looking forward to the end of the Future arc, and hoping for more ratchet and clank in the future (well not future ha ha). And I’d also love to see something like size matters! Whatever happened to high impact games anyway? I’d love to see them make a vita ratchet and clank as fun as size matters again.

  • I am thrilled!!! This feels like it goes back to the original.

  • 1. Why isn’t the T-Rex or Sheepinator mod available in A4O?
    2. Is it true that Ratchet has a sister?(optional to answer or ignore)

  • Yes, a thousand times, yes!!!!!

Yes, I’ll have a PS4, but i think it’s a great move with this being a PS3 games. Mind blowing price and it’s on disc too. Now I need to discuss with the wife if it should be digital or disc for her. We are both fans of R&C.

I personally liked all of the R&C titles up to date. Even the newer ones, they all have their own personality that makes them fun.

  • This is a day 1 buy for me.

Will this be available in a physical box?

  • Nevermind, I see a physical box will be available. Great to hear.

One question: Why not a “full” game like aCiT or ToD ? Why again a 3/4th of a game? I know the price is great for such a game but do you think people will no longer buy a 60 dollar game as good as aCiT ?

ToD and aCIT was the best games in the series by far! I hope this game lives up to that standard!

    • We set out to make the biggest and best single-player Ratchet & Clank game we could with the time and resources we were allowed, and then we wanted to price it competitively.

  • Wow thank you Insomniac! I had lost faith in you guys when I saw Insomniac at microsft this E3, but you got me now back on board! The preview shown for Into the Nexus is Epic and beautiful!

I understand this won’t be on PS4, but hey why not then make a PS4 Ratchet and Clank?

Also, since you guys are returning to ps2 epic gameplay, why not also use Ratchet’s character model from ps2, or the HD ones from future series on PS3?

Anyhow, it’s a day one purchase for me!

    • Ratchet’s current design is Ratchet’s design. We continue to evolve that as we go, and going back would be changing for little reason. :-)

  • I think All4One and FFA get a bad rap (except for the Vita version of FFA; come on, guys), but I cannot wait for Into the Nexus. I’ve been itching for a traditional R&C since the superb ACIT. I also can’t wait to see R&C on the PS4 (hint)!

  • All I have to say is thank you very much for more Ratchet & Clank. I know we will love it. And if you ever wanted to put together a retail box set of all 4 Future games I would buy it in an instant.

  • Very exciting news! As an SP type of gamer, I’m so glad to hear there will be another Ratchet & Clank SP focused game! Though I haven’t played FFA yet, I did really enjoy All4One, even as an SP experience.

Though Nexus sounds like it will be shorter than the full-fledged AAA releases of the past, I just hope it offers replayability in the form of a full set of skill points and trophies, including a platinum, and even alternate skins and other tweaks.

    • You shoudl check out FFA. It’s still a lot of fun even in single-player and is action packed. Also a great competitive game.

There is a full set of skill points and trophies as well as a challenge mode in Into the Nexus. Lots of replayability for those that like that sort of thing

  • OH DEAR another PS3 game to add to my ‘MUST HAVE’ games this year :P I am not sure i will have time to play PS4 with all these games coming out for the PS3(i am not complaining tho) :D
    + Like others have said(so sorry for saying it again) – PLZ do a R&C game for PS4 in the future! ! ! :P :P :P

  • BTW, the trailer looks AWESOME!

  • Absolutely buying this. I was hoping for a PS4 R&C, but given how fantastic this looks… I want! Oh and that price is also just fantastic. I hope other developers follow suite with current generation games (when winter comes, of course).

  • <—- my avatar picture is pretty old! :P Amazing! One of my favorite series since its inception! Glad you are not making the jump to PS4 so soon, R&C graphics are still top notch.

  • I will be getting this for sure, love the Ratchet & Clank games.

  • Good stuff.

I’ve got all the R&C games for the PS3 so far (physical copies of all possible titles + downloads) and I’ll definitely be getting this when it comes out!

  • Oh yeah! Thats amazing! Really good news from our beloved Insomniac after that depressing FUSE game.

  • This game looks awesome. I love the ratchet & clank series. I hope this game is as epic as crack in time

  • Looks awesome! :D I do, however, wonder why Insomniac haven’t taken advantage of the PS4’s improved computer power?
But I don’t complain, it means that I can save some money, in not buying a PS4 (Yet..)

  • Can. Not. Wait. -Bounces-

I didn’t care for FFA and A4O, but I -love- all the other games.
