August 12th PlayStation Plus Update

Regular Price: $14.99, Free for PS Plus members

Runner 2
Runner2 is a rhythm-music, auto-running platformer. Players will run through fantastic environments, using brand new moves, to amazing new soundtracks as they run, jump, slide, kick, and soar toward the goal of tracking down the Nefarious Timbletot who has un-fused CommanderVideo’s reality. Runner2 features 5 exciting worlds, 125 tantalizing levels and 5 death defying BOSS battles! Play as 8 different characters and find secret areas to unlock new and zany costumes!
Tomb Raider Bundle (includes Quantum Conundrum)

Regular Price: $44.99; PS Store Sale Price: $22.49; PS Plus Price: $20.24

Tomb Raider
The Tomb Raider Digital Edition bundle includes:

  • The full Tomb Raider game.
  • 3-pack bundle of the weapons Agent 47 uses in Hitman: Absolution.
  • Shanty Town multiplayer map, which is a ramshackle area that features steep climbs, multiple ziplines for quick escapes, and deadly traps to set for your enemies.
  • Tomb Raider Outfit Pack (A 3-pack bundle of outfits for Lara — the Hunter, Aviatrix and Guerilla outfits.)
  • Quantum Conundrum Full Game
Runner2: Good Friends Character Pack

Regular Price: $2.99; PS Plus Price: $2.39

Runner 2 Good Friends
In most instances, “DLC” stands for “downloadable content.” With the Good Friends Character Pack, however, it stands for “downright lovable characters.” Featuring the likes of Josef (Machinarium), Spelunky Guy (Spelunky), Razputin (Psychonauts), Dr. Fetus (Super Meat Boy), Quote (Cave Story), and Invisible CommanderVideo (duh), it’s a virtual tour de force of indelible indie awesomeness. It’ll run you (pun intended) about as much as a cup of coffee, and is scientifically proven to give you an energy boost equivalent to about eight pounds of espresso beans. Your heart might start beating dangerously fast, but your eyes and ears (and maybe even your nose – why not?) will most definitely thank you.

  • You can’t be serious. How can you offer us Hitman Absolution, a game with technical issues that has left hundreds of people (at least) without the posibility of coming to an end, because the saved data gets lost randomly (the same for the Contracts Mode). At the same time, you are supporting the bad behavior of the company in charge of HA, because promissed on their official forum (forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?s=563c38ee688739184931ffe696d27f03&t=131742) to give us a solution but they have done nothing from the released date until now.
I consider this disrespectfull, specially coming from Sony…How is this possible?
I’m still waiting for an official answer.

  • You guys should consider giving the DLC’s for Gravity Rush free since that game was part of the free game collection a while back.

  • I hope you’re ready for the week Darkstalkers is added, Morgan. It will probably the most negative, disrespectful comments section ever. Which you certainly don’t deserve. But if PSP games are going to stay we need to get better games. On an older system we should not be getting really old, mediocre games. Please give us better games along the lines of GoW or Liberty City Stories. Please, please, please stop with the fighters. I hope you listen to us now. Fighters are not what we want. We’ve gotten like 10 in the last year.

  • As with many others, I’d also like to know about Spelunky’s status for the Vita. It released on Steam this week with a discount and I don’t often buy games on multiple platforms. I’d prefer the Vita version, but Steam is dangling this carrot in front of me!

  • Morgan can you please stop giving us the same generic answer week after week “we’re listening to your feedback” because it comes off insincere, all I have to say is actions speak louder then words.

  • Anymore AAA games coming out the mouth, Hit man is not a bad game, its just not my cup of tea( im more of a jump in guns blazing type of a person not a sneaking person).

  • @Morgan, FWIW Runner2 was announced as having a Vita port on this very blog: https://blog.playstation.com/2013/06/13/pickles-in-your-pocket-bringing-runner2-to-ps-vita/

  • While I am really happy to be getting Runner 2 this week, I have to say that I too have been underwhelmed by PS+ over the last few months. Here are my thoughts:

    1. I’d like to see a few more “family oriented” games become part of the IGC. I’m a long-term Playstation fan because of the variety of games that have always been available on the various consoles, not just M-rated shooters of various types. That’s not to say that I only want to see E-rated games or anything, just a bit more variety.

    2. I think its cool to get a few PSP games every now and then, but passing them off as Vita games is just plain silly. End of discussion.

    3. I also have to agree that getting the same game twice on different platforms, in this case Machinarium, is a little lazy too.

I still feel strongly that PS+ is a great service, it just needs a little bit more variety in the games offered.

P.S. I am among those who would LOOOOVE to get Need For Speed: MW as part of the IGC.

  • Just passing by to keep giving my OPINION of how awful is this month.

“What are your thoughts on this August’s PS Plus content? VERY dissastisfied for every single game this month”

  • You will loose sales on tom raider for 24 cents. And the price difference on plus is only 2 dls

  • Ahhh they listen! I’ve been praising their previous discounts and gushing to be honest. Then they go on and give me sfxt for 20 bucks, plus a Star Wars pinball add on for free this month hell katamari for four bucks! I will touch that katamari for that price and not feel dirty about it. Thanks Sony for listening keep me spending money!

  • Why must you update vita at the months end?

  • omg xD, yesterday i was thinking if i buy tomb rider or NFS the run and today we have a discount :D!!! so it will be Tomb rider yay xD

  • Yeah my math was wrong on the months. Hopefully they switch in November and only stay up a year like the others.

Still I think that needs to be fixed. There are 3 games “always there” on the Vita IGC and on the PS3 IGC. The difference is the PS3 IGC has 10 games where the Vita has 5. So at any given time 60% of the Vita list remains the same while the PS3 list is only 30%.

I think things would be better if you cut down the number of games “always on”* the Vita from 3 to 2. Then 40% of the games remain the same and there and 60% are rotating in and out more frequently. That would keep things more in like with the PS3 IGC.

*You see what I did there?

  • Looks like I will be buying Touch My Katamari, at that price it’s a no-brainer.

  • Awesome!! Runner2!!! Also the discounts are pretty good but… I already own Tomb Raider and I don’t have a PSVita!!

  • I’m rather excited for Runner2 and I like getting smaller PSN titles in the IGC, as long as they have trophies. What I’m not okay with are PSP games and retread PS3/Vita games like Machinarium. Those trends need to stop.

  • @Morgan

We understand plus regions are different for lots of reasons some. What we want to know is what are those differences and how the influence the games we get and the ones they get. Tell us how regions influence developers get specific on how certain laws may block releasing a game for free here or elsewhere. In essence breakdown for us in a separate blog post how plus works. If you can’t ok the decision to inform us on the ins and outs of plus who do we talk to we’ll write them e-mail them or do whatever it takes to let them know we’d like to be better informed. After all we do spend $50 on the service.

Secondly to those complaining about the criticsm being leveled against some posts I agree we should maybe tone it down some I’ve never called anyone a name or anything (at least that I can remember) but words do hurt so let’s watch what we say. Keep in mind however crticism is warranted go back an dread some of those store updates with bad pricing or some of Rey’s drop posts (see the last 2 weeks) with inaccurate information in them. Someone has to point out these glaring issues.

  • 116 continued

Just think in a few months thousands hopefully millions of 360 owners will be returning to Sony (YEAH!!!!!) but we can’t have them return to misspellings, inaccurate posts, or untimely store updates. Imagine a new ps4 owner who never heard of plus sees a different update for the EU and NA audiences they are going to wonder “What is up? Why the difference? Can I get that game instead of this one?” We have to have the full 5 star treatment ready for them and right now sadly we don’t.

  • aw comon!! i just bought tomb raider few weeks ago!! dam it should have waited for discount y u doo thisss ps plus gahhh

  • I have no problem with PS+ I think it’s great. Been a member for about 3 months now and just renewed my sub. Keep up the great work guys and I can’t wait till the next gen consoles come out. I know PS+ will be even bigger.

  • Spelunky?……..Bueller?……….Bueller?……….Bueller?…….

  • Getting a response was nice.

My suggestion is to perhaps not try so hard to push the indie genre. Yeah, this is the age of Kickstarter and $.99 apps, but inclusion of something new doesn’t mean exclusion of the classic.

Perhaps there could be a special indie subscription service, separate entirely from the IGC.

One of the things that strikes me, though, is that, as you said, you are working under constraints of licensing and marketing. The game selection is surely designed to ‘advertise’ and drum up more support for fledgling genres, like the more artistic games included recently, as well as give game companies a chance to vastly increase their audience, without taking too much of a hit in profits.

Yes, the companies whose games get included in the IGC are likely to make less profit from only getting a percentage of the money paid for subscriptions, but what better way for them to gain a huge following, almost instantly? Especially considering how powerful word-of-mouth is.

But, the danger in this, too, is that if enough games are included that are next to shovelware, it drags down the entire system with it. LEAD with your strongest, and everything else is a bonus.

  • Nice sales. Totally picking up Atelier Totori.

  • Since I am using my subscription more for discounts than anything, I’d imagine that that’s the main type of customer that you want. My PS+ subscription is the best incentive I’ve had to purchase games that I otherwise would not have, and that’s the hardest type of sale to make, in any business.

Most people budget for their entertainment, but when a deal comes up that is impossible to pass up, they’ll make allowances. That is what makes for a long-time customer, too: perceived value.

Not only do I like the games that I get a better deal on, I appreciate them more because I feel like it was a smart investment. If anything, that is what you should be highlighting about the PS+ service, itself. The IGC has become absolutely secondary.

  • Dammit. Bought Soul Sacrifice a couple of days before the discount. :(

Well, it is a great discount so shame on my for not being able to see the future. :P

  • Vita sale looks pretty solid, but I don’t have a vita and the PS3 offerings this month don’t do much for me (just like last month), so I’m going to try to wait patiently for next month and hope we get some cool stuff!

Any possibility that we can get some sort of Ps1 classic / Ps2 classic type sale within the next few months? I’ve been having more fun going back to old PS1/PS2 era games recently as opposed to games for the PS3 so it would be nice to open up some discounts on your back catalog for people like myself.

Oh and Divekick next week. Everyone rejoice.

  • 121: CraddaPoosta,

I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you on this. We need to keep indie games in Plus. Look, I agree that like all things, it must be balanced and agree about blockbusters needing to be there too. That being said, I don’t want a ‘separate’ service forcing me to subscribe to two. I want a balanced service, plain and simple. Besides, indie games introduce concepts that can be built on and establish a fan base so future sequels could be made on a larger scale.

Maybe the middle ground would be that instead of having this general 12 games they can balance it out and have 4 indie and 8 full games (with a balance of newer and older titles across multiple genres). They already have the majority of games being full games now.

  • 20.24 for Tomb Raider!? are you guys serious?! lol you couldnt make it just 20.00 …. >.> making people buy 2 $20 dollar cards because of that!!!

  • Absolutely fantastic discounts for the Vita. I honestly dont know how people can complain about any month of Plus. Every month is worth more than the $50 a year and gives at least one good free game and Massive discounts

  • I just bought Tomb Raider last week for 30$. It’s not fair!!!! Wahhhh!

  • @craddaPoosta I have to say, I was appalled by your initial comments on the blog post (anything from pages 1 and 2). But honestly, I really enjoyed your last couple posts (#121 &123). They were insightful without the tone of entitlement that turned me off to your first few comments. You acknowledged that region differences make NA and EU IGC’s different and still made your point that you wanted better parity between the services. I may not agree with all you said (I.e., NA IGC is “shovelware”; Sony not “leading with its best foot), but I understood and respected your points. And I also do agree in that I get Steam-like sales on great games thanks to Plus. Hope to continue this constructive dialogue, as I know it’s in all of our best interest for NA Plus to be as strong as possible.

  • @tgpumpkin Dude, I don’t know you, but I’ve said “Amen” to almost everything you’ve posted. I concur with your statement regarding the need for balance in the IGC. I love getting AAA games, but I also love getting PSN and indie games in the IGC. Personally, I’d much rather get good PSN/indie games like Machinarium or Runner 2 instead of mediocre AAA games like Mafia 2 or LBP Karting. When it comes to balance, I don’t want to sacrifice AAA quantity for overall quality. I want all good games in the IGC, regardless of its size or price.

  • I have made maybe three comments on this blog but im here alot. But I must say that the IGC is really lacking. Being someone who doesnt own a vita or psp I dread the last week of the month because I know Im getting nothing. We went from 2 AAA games, a few psn games, avatars, and backgrounds…… to this. Im not hating on the vita content at all but at least give us strictly PS# user a background or avatars or something. Sony can add 30 dollar vita games but we cant get some 49 cent avatars or something.

  • Considering the competition is giving away Dead Rising 2 this week, I thought PS+ would give us something good. I guess not. Nothing for me this week. :(

  • Any chance darkstalkers could still be replaced with a non-fighting game? I don’t care what it is, but, please, anything but another fighting game.

I, and I’m guessing many others, feel our feedback is being ignored with yet another fighting game making it onto Vita IGC. I just want diversity.

  • He we go again every week the same thing. Its like all feel better slamming Sony and Morgan. There are many indie gamers out there so for one please don’t speak for all of us. Second tell me where you are going to be able to get both the games, updates and discounts they offer every month. I give Morgan a lot of credit, you all sound like greedy 5 year olds. If you don’t like it dump it after your subscription is over. Or better yet tell me when Xbox or Nintendo is going to offer you anything close to this. I gather that the people behind this give you a chance to play something that you might not necessarily buy. And second off if you don’t like what they are offering how about hitting up your favorite game makers and let them know. but if you really look at all of this in the first year you got 64 games many of which were blockbusters and countless discounts for the price less than that of one of your blockbuster games. Hey Morgan if you read this your doing a hell of job and I appreciate everything you have given to us, enjoy your blog look forward to reading it every Monday. Love the indie games and love PS+.

  • I have games that i paid money for that don’t show up as purchased in the PS Store anymore or my download list. Can anyone please help me figure out who to talk to from sony so i can get them back. I was on the phone with sony 2 times…the first for 5 or 6 hours and the second for 3 or 4 hours. My wife and i are really upset and just want to figure out how to get what we paid for back.

  • Another update with Indie and vita games. I should really cancel my psn plus subscription.

  • That Vita sale……..

    Glad I’m a plus member : )

  • looking more forward to star wars pinball now will that be ps3 and vita or one or the other and is it gonna be the dlc pack for zen 2 or the standalone either way iim more excited for that….runner 2 may get some of my attention tho especially if its got trophies

  • I don’t think Morgan would specifically comment on lead time, but it seems that there is at least 6 months of lead times for a title to come to the IGC. We need to wait out a few more months before we could realize the benefits of polls and/or our feedback.

Also just because the vocal minority/majority on the blog wished it, doesn’t mean that Sony has sales/download data to show the opposite opinion. So despite the votes, we just might see more fighting and/or PSP games.

So far PS+ has been fine with me, there are quite a few games I would not have purchased, but ended up really enjoying. Sure some months have no interesting content, but sometimes the sales make the month work out.

  • morgan you guys did not reply to anyone on the agust ps plus update post so why did you post on the 1st page of this topic telling a guy you replied quit a bit?
there was a total of 5 replies and over 800+ user post.

you guys got the heck out of dodge that day lol

and stop giving vita owners psp games

  • Vita memory cards are too overpriced and not large enough, rendering the Vita sale useless for my 57 remaining MEGAbytes on my 16gig memory card. 32gig for $30 and 64gig for $60 would be the ultimate Vita-selling dream come true. I own physical forms of most of those titles thankfully, though. Same for Tomb Raider, and picked up Quantum Conundrum back when Plus had it for free, but that’s a good deal for the digital combo of both, I must say.

Poll – Needs an option “I own some of the content, not all, but still nothing for me this week”.

Typed out an essay and was informed to reduce it by 1,250 characters. Here you go, cliffs notes version!

  • Morgan what are the chances of us getting Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for free?

  • Nice! I was hoping this was going to be early in the month instead of later. Woohoo!

  • @25, I totally agree and Morgan’s answer is a big joke.

  • Aside from Hitman, this is one of the worst months in recent memory for the IGC.

  • they also put a poll up for this week and they should have had a poll for the full agust update post because the 1st post of the month for playstation + is when all the plus members are here.

but you do not need a poll if you read even 1/2 of the agust update post. so this poll will not reflect the truth. and besides they did not listen to anyone from the 1st poll results

  • btw way the only way to have a poll for vita owners is to send vita owners a email with the poll. fun fact most people who want psp games over full vita games he or she does not own a vita.
another fun fact people bought a vita to play vita games and if they wanted psp games they would have bought a psp. you guys really need to step it up a notch and give vita owners real games.

most guys here today are very happy because of the sale but why be happy if you have to spend money? 1st get ps+ better than this garbage that you call a service
