A Leap Beyond

Velocity 2X on PS4 and PS Vita
Hi everyone, we are so excited and proud to announce Velocity 2X; the highly requested sequel to Velocity Ultra!

Story Teaser

Gameplay Teaser (Pre-Alpha Footage)

This video shows pre-alpha gameplay footage, which means it’s nowhere near what we’re aiming for visually. In fact, our technical director Hussain Sheikh was the lead visual effects programmer on Split/Second, so you can trust that he and the art team won’t stop until Velocity 2X looks spectacular.

What the dock?!

When PlayStation asked if we’d like Velocity 2X announced during its Gamescom press conference, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. But the game just isn’t ready for a full reveal yet, so we’ve only let you glimpse the platforming gameplay. You can rest assured that the game features great mechanics that bridge the two formats perfectly; this isn’t just Velocity with a platformer bolted on, it’s a new game designed to use two gameplay formats. You won’t have to wait long for the full reveal – we’ll be at the Eurogamer Expo in September!

In the meantime, sign up to the Velocity website for updates and then read some more info below…

What’s new, then?

Weaving together two classic game formats into one seamless experience, Velocity 2X features platforming action alongside the award-winning top-down shoot ‘em-up gameplay! We can’t reveal everything yet, but we can confirm the following:

Gameplay

  • Dual format gameplay:
    • Top-down shoot ‘em-up
    • Side-scrolling platformer
  •

  • Dual format bosses =)
  • Speed boost pads
  • Special weapon attacks

Velocity 2X on PS4 and PS Vita

Graphics & Tech

  • 960×544 native on PS Vita
  • 1080p on PS4
  • 60fps on PS4 and PS Vita
  • 3D camera zoom
  • Dynamic lighting
  • Particle system
  • Post processing VFX
  • Multiple layers of parallax

Velocity 2X is a huge step up from Velocity Ultra. We threw out the old code and started again from scratch targeting next generation hardware. We hired AAA engine and visual effects programmers to bring a highly polished modern feel to a classic genre, and we’ve pushed our house art style to the next level.

Music

Joris de Man is back on board to provide audio and music, and whereas Velocity Ultra had a handful of music tracks, Velocity 2X features a full soundtrack. It’s a leap forward in production value whilst keeping one foot firmly in our retro roots.

Just turn the volume up and listen to the story teaser above to hear exactly what we mean.

Story

Velocity 2X features a much richer story, and whilst we can’t reveal much about it yet, you can get a taste from the Apex Predator prologue below…

Apex Predator Prologue

Velocity 2X on PS4 and PS Vita

“Now I remember.

“As the ship hull screeched and ruptured under ferocious pressure, I watched in detached wonder as automated cabling tore into my wrist and snaked inside my arm.

“Overstressed medical tech must have fought to keep me alive, desperate for raw materials, and did the only thing it could – it fused us together.

“The ship had me on direct life support, feeding oxygen into my veins, recycling my blood. The ship and I were united for the journey, but now someone has crudely separated us.

“Do they mean to heal me, or finish what they started? I should be horrified by what has happened to me but I’m strangely calm, and I have hope to cling to.”

We are all very excited about Velocity 2X, and we’re confident that fans of Velocity Ultra will absolutely love it. We can’t wait for you to play it!

Sweet! Makes me want to pick up the original… well, the Vita remake. :P

But I’m worried it’d be too hard.

Full native res on both Vita and PS4 @ 60fps? I bought but still haven’t played Velocity Ultra yet, darn backlog. Guess I should get on that. Excited to learn more about this game.

Day One purchase for me. If it is half as good as the original was it’ll be well worth the money…and I don’t even know how much it costs yet!

Loved Velocity Ultra. The only thing it lacked was presentation in its story.

James:
I know this has a better story, but will u make us care for it this time? Will there be voice acting?

This was a nice surprise. Please tell me this is a cross buy!

I’ve been very happy with Velocity Ultra I just started it this past week (thank you for the touch teleport on Vita it helped enhance the experience), from what I’ve played I’m looking forward to what you guys have to show with this new title.

Best news of the day, even if it was expected.

Glad to see there will be boss fights. I know I wanted and recommended them. On the other hand, I didn’t recommend or expect 2D platforming, so please excuse me while I pick my jaw back up off the ground.

Also, I’m really digging the new title screen font.

I enjoyed Velocity Ultra in the Vita, but adding platforming sections could make it even better; i hope the art style in the levels is more varied this time around.

Awesome to see a prominent female protagonist!

The look always reminded me of Tyrian, and the gameplay even on the mini was great.

With a focus on story, will there be branching storylines/multiple endings like Tyrian and Privateer had?

Will the new soundtrack be 320kbps Ogg on Vita and 24-bit/lossless on PS4?
