DRIVECLUB at Gamescom: The “Social Network” of Racers
Update: We know many of you were looking forward to playing the promised PS Plus Edition and we are truly sorry for the delay. Our first priority is to provide you with the best possible experience while playing DRIVECLUB. With the high volume of new players and additional server load the PS Plus Edition is anticipated to bring, we are currently not confident that we can guarantee the best online experience. Until we can ensure that everyone can enjoy the full social connected online experience, we will be postponing the release of the PS Plus Edition until further notice.

Guten tag from Gamescom! I hope you got a chance to see yesterday’s press conference, where we saw a glut of new games announced (and finally found out when we can get our own PS4s!).

Sid and I are in Germany, tracking down new info for the latest games. Yesterday, I sat in on a presentation by Col Rodgers, the game director on PS4’s upcoming launch exclusive, Driveclub. He went into detail about Driveclub’s social features, the PS Plus Edition of the game, and showed us how Remote Play on PS Vita works.

Rodgers described Driveclub as the “social network for racing games,” and this is exemplified by the game’s Challenge system. If you feel especially confident about a run on a certain track, with a certain car, even at a certain time of day, you can issue a challenge to your club, sending a notification to their PS4s or to their mobile phones (courtesy of the Driveclub Mobile app). As they play and try to beat your challenge, they’ll rack up points for the club.

Things get interesting when you elect to challenge your other friends, who might not be part of your club. If they like a challenge that you’ve sent them, they can redistribute it to their club or friends, who can then redistribute to their club or friends, and so on. A friendly challenge can turn into a worldwide phenomenon, literally overnight.

More details about the PlayStation Plus Edition were divulged, as well. Gamers can play Driveclub on PS4 three ways when it launches: the full retail version on Blu-ray, the full version digitally, or gamers will have access to a free version of the game with their PlayStation Plus subscription as part of the Instant Game Collection. The PS Plus edition of the game is the full, complete experience, differing only in the amount of content included with a selection of cars, tracks and locations from the full version. PS Plus members can pick up the game for free initially, then buy more cars and tracks, or upgrade to the full version of the game if they choose.

Driveclub keeps looking and sounding better and better as we get closer to launch. Between the intimately detailed car models, the real-time shadow rendering, the Hybrid-created soundtrack — “Remixed by the best in the biz,” says Rodgers — and the directly recorded roars of each car’s engine, every inch of this game is permeated by passion and the desire to create the best racing game possible. Oh, and yes: it runs at 1080p.

Remote Play on PS Vita looked easy, beautiful and responsive — three very welcome qualities for this new technology. When a challenge arrives on the Driveclub Mobile app or on your PS4, you can start up the game and hit the track, or switch over to your Vita to take it off the big screen.

Afterwards, Jamie Brayshaw caught up with us to pass along some info about a challenge taking place at Gamescom this week.

Two clubs from developer Evolution Studios, LIKE A BOSS and LUCKY 7 LEGENDS, face-off in the #GC2013 Challenge, and the rivalry is captured in the new Driveclub trailer — which debuted at the show.

Everything you do in Driveclub earns fame points for you and your Clubmates, and there’s plenty of ways you can earn fame with Overdrives and Face-offs. These allow you to compete against friends and rivals across the world in every section of every track; whether it’s maintaining incredible speed through a section of track, drifting with skill around a bend, or taking specific corners with the perfect racing line, there’s always something to play for, no matter how far ahead or behind the pack you may be. At Gamescom, Evolution is inviting the fans to be a part of these clubs. Who wins the #GC2013 Challenge will be determined over the course of the show!

After watching the trailer, vote on Facebook, or if you’re at the show, stop by the show floor and play the demo to help contribute to the overall success of both clubs. The ending of the trailer will play out the final result of your votes next week!

  • First rule of driveclub, never talk about the driveclub XD

  • Love this game. Now I won’t have to worry about getting my drive on without the gas waste. Thanks~

  • THE racing game :) Just amazing…

  • LOL at the first comment! Question: What exactly does Driveclub “PS Plus Edition” actually mean? I’m assuming a dumbed down version with only a select amount of cars, tracks, modes etc? If that’s the case, will we have to spend $60 on the PS Store to unlock the entire game or will it be cheaper like say $40 type thing?

The game looks amazing though and I’m glad as a PS+ subscriber I’ll get to at least sample it on day one of owning my PS4 for free! Good job!

The PS Plus edition is the full experience, just doesn’t include all of the cars and tracks. You can buy them to add to the game, or upgrade to the full version of the game outright. I don’t have any pricing details, unfortunately.

  • “PS Plus members can pick up the game for free initially, then buy more cars and tracks, or upgrade to the full version of the game if they choose.”

What will the cost be to upgrade?

  • I’m not a fan of racing games at all, but i’ll try the free version for PS Plus just for the trophies.

  • So do the Developers of this game and looking to things like remote play and the games social aspect…. do they think Digital would be the way to go here or will a user be just as happy with the disc?

    • Justin Massongill

They mentioned that the digital version of the game is identical to the Blu-ray version… I don’t think they mind which version you get as long as you pick up the game. :)

  • Sweet day on buy for me i just hope later in the game history we can get a 3rd person view.

  • Can we get any details on what upgrades (and pricing) will be available for the PS Plus edition? Obviously an upgrade will not be as much as buying the full game since we will already have the game, but it would be nice to know ahead of time what kind of discount to expect.

  • Finally a game with 1st person view. With recent games such as Need for Speed Most Wanted and Grid 2 i was afraid that this would no longer be a viable option for future games. Out of curiosity since i have playstation plus right now will i be able to use my current subscription with the ps4. Or will i have to buy another year for the ps4?

  • @6 Playing a game you don’t even like just for trophies?! Is someone paying you to earn trophies? I hope there’s no trophies in this game just to keep people like you out, that’s the most pathetic thing I’ve ever heard of..

  • Well im not that excited about the game but i will get the ps plus version, Almost everyone at Evolution Studios know what i want: Gimme the most brutal off road racing game ever created on the ps4, thanks.

  • Hopefully it will be better or just as good as Gran Turismo.

  • I know this may not be any developers main concern as this feature has gone mostly unnoticed in the past(I.E the original Playstation Portable era) but will #DRIVECLUB be Remoteplay compatible (I don’t expect a port to the vita of any sort considering the shear amount of work that must have went into this game, but Remoteplay would be nice)?

  • Ignore my previous post

  • @ Ryumoau

Oh my God that’s so stupid.

But I’m not surprised. After all, it is you.

  • This game looks rad, by the way. Can’t wait to jump in and leave the jokers in the dust!

  • one thing i have to know… is there a gran turismo style “normal” racing game (by normal i dont necessarily mean “simulation” like GT) or will there be street racing, upgrading and tweaking cars and being chased by cops?

  • oh and will there be split screen

  • I can’ wait to play this! Without a doubt going to purchase the full game come nov 15th

  • i’m no pro in racing, but i’ll buy this game, because the graphics is ultra nice is wow wow is awesome PS4 the best

  • Please tell me that there will be real races vs 7 or 15 opponents on the same track and not only time trials, drift and 1vs1…

  • @ PYROMANIAC: Exactly what I would like to know. It seems like in all the videos, the competition is just like you stated: trials, drift, etc.

I would like to know if there will be actual, organized races that we can compete in.

But, it really doesn’t matter. I’ll try the free version and if it isn’t what I like or expect, then I didn’t lose anything.

  • Day one purchase.

    Very excited for this game.

  • I have my answer by searching on youtube:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lPixRQ5xqs

  • I may buy my PS4 at December or January. Will it be possible to pick the PS Plus version with th PS3 and download it at the PS4 when I get it?

  • How many vitas can remote play @ one time. Just one ? Or multiple

  • Except for the firt video (what I consider just a concept of what the game was prettending to be) none have shown real time multiplayer. I mean, the stadard competition, car against car (not car against ghost).

Will we have the standard realtime races? If yes, when its gameplay will be revelead to us?

I was very interested about the game, but without the real time (car vs car) standard races, it will be a big let down for me.

  • videos look Awsome pictures look amazing I am dieing to try it. Greatness Awaits.

  • What I really want to know is when will GT6 be coming to PS4. Not just PS3.
