How to Upgrade Select PS3 Games to Their PS4 Versions

Update: Watch_Dogs has a new release date in 2014. Due to this scheduling change, it will not be included in the upgrade program at this time.

As announced during PlayStation’s Gamescom press conference, there will be a simple way to upgrade to the PS4 digital version of four select games, for a low discounted price, when you buy the PS3 version of those games. Here are the full specifics so you’re set for November 15th — click here for full step-by-step instructions.

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, and Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition are the supported titles for this program. When you buy the Blu-ray Disc or digital version of these select PS3 games, for a limited time, you will receive an entitlement to download a PS4 digital copy of the same game from PlayStation Store when it becomes available, at the discounted price of $9.99.

Gamers who purchase a PS3 Blu-ray Disc of these four games will find a code packed into the PS3 version that they can redeem on PlayStation Store. To play the PS4 version of the game when it becomes available, you’ll need to insert the original PS3 disc in your PS4 to activate and play the PS4 version, so hang onto that PS3 disc!

Gamers who purchase the digital version of any of these four games will not need to redeem a code to receive their PS4 versions. When your PS4 arrives, just look for the PS4 version of the game on PlayStation Store – it will appear on PlayStation Store on your PS4 for the discounted price of $9.99. Just purchase it and start playing!

For those of you who purchase the PS3 disc version of the games, you do not need a PS4 system to redeem your code, so feel free to redeem it as soon as you pick up your PS3 copy — you can download your digital copy later when your PS4 arrives.

But don’t wait: This program lasts for a limited time. You’ll need to redeem your code and make the purchase before January 31st, 2014 (for Assassin’s Creed IV and Watch_Dogs), March 28th (for Battlefield 4), or March 31st (for Call of Duty: Ghosts) in order to participate.

  • This deal is awesome, people! Com’n!

Get PS3 copy, digital download. Get PS4 copy, digital download. $70 total.

No swapping discs and i can get my next gen fix while still being able to play with friends who are not upgrading to PS4 yet. Stats across both platforms…oh, yea!

Tired of hearing about not wanting to use up HDD space on a digital download on PS4. Because all games will require full install to hard drive. Disc or digital. So it doesn’t matter.

Second, download times aren’t as bad as you all want to make it seem. I downloaded GTA V at 1:00 am on the 17th and it took about 2 and half hours for 18 GBs. And that’s with regular broadband. Seriously, who is not using broadband on this forum? Game was ready for me when i woke up for work. No waiting in line at 12 am and no forms or codes to use.

This is the future, people. Embrace it! I have. Easier and less stressful.

    Peace out!

  • Is it downloading the entire game onto the PS4? or just “unlocking” the ability to use a PS3 disc on PS4….

…can’t decide if it’s a waste of space, or a way to make money since there’s no “backwards compatibility”

  • I would like FIFA to be included in this list

  • Considering how badly the GTAV digital game download worked on release and also considering that these games could be up to 50Gb to download – I’m going to order the physical PS4 discs for all my games for now. While I love the space on a 500GB harddrive, it will fill up pretty quickly with next-gen titles and next-gen DLC.

I think my Battlefield 3 premium DLC downloads are somewhere near 20+Gb and that isn’t including the actual game files – I can only imagine what it will be like for Battlefield 4.

  • @bcturns I have NEVER read anywhere that the PS4 has mandatory full disc installs, ever. I have however read in multiple places the PS4 has OPTIONAL installs to HDD if you want to.

The Xbox One, conversely, does have mandatory installs to the HDD.

    http://n4g.com/news/1344130/shuhei-yoshida-confirms-that-you-can-fully-install-disc-games-on-ps4-s-hd-shares-info-on-dualshock4

Plus – unless you have MONSTER internet, downloading a game off the disc is going to be much much much faster than over the internet.

  • So let me get this straight…some of you are angry that you can’t spend $70 to buy a game across two platforms and then turn around and sell the physical copy (probably for upwards of $45) while continuing to play the digital copy?

Are you out of your minds? You wouldn’t get to play the PS3 version if you sold the disc, so why the hell would you be able to play the digital version? Oh, because you paid $10 for? Sorry, you can’t even buy a PSN game for $10, nevermind a AAA title.

    Grow up.

  • Now, if you want a digital copy of the PS4

  • Boy, this comment system needs an edit button. Unintentional enter key ahoy.

Now, if you want a physical copy on the PS3 and a digital copy on the PS4 without the two being tied to the PS3 physical disc, my recommendation is to pony up the $120 for two separate copies. Or hold onto your game until you’re finished with it and just pay $10 for the digital.

Otherwise, stop complaining. This offer is not for you two have TWO DIFFERENT COPIES of the game. It’s for you to be able to play ONE COPY across two platforms. You don’t get to sell one copy or lend it out because, guess what, you only purchased one copy.

The only game to ever include a digital copy for free on a different platform, that I know of, was Portal 2. And that’s because Valve is boss.

  • All the games listed on this post sucks and looks like bulls**t. Nintendo and its games are better…….

  • It’d be nice if EBGames or any other store did something like this where you could trade in the PS3 copy and get the PS4 copy for 9.99 cause as much as this makes me tempted to just keep my PS3 preorder of AC3 it’d still be nice to have an actual physical disc and case seeing as how it’ll be the first game I get on PS4 and I wouldn’t be getting any others till I finish it. I don’t want to backlog with the PS4 like I have with all my other consoles (unless the preorder entices me)

  • This is a very interesting program. It`s a pretty nice deal. This does confirm one thing though. It confirms that the PS4 can recognize PS3 discs. Would it be possible to do something like this with Gaikai? Where we insert a PS3 disc inside the PS4 as proof of ownership and stream the PS3 game as long as the PS3 disc is in the PS4? That would be nice!

  • @estoc1 And you still haven’t answered my question yet. Explain to me why can’t the Wii U play Borderlands 2, DmC: Devil May Cry, Dead Space 3, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Remember Me, Metro: Last Light, and Saints Row IV. Until you answer it, I won’t leave you alone and will keep replying this question to you. If you aren’t replying, is it because you too scared to answer me?

  • Sony making it happen!!!!!! You guys keep impressing me every time! Keep it up Sony! BTW you gotta have GTA V in the program!

  • @Gamerzlimited

Because Nintendo favors quality, fun and gameplay. Not graphic interactive movie doo-doo. You see, Unlike Sony, Nintendo has taste. That’s why you don’t see your bulls**t games on the WII U.

Now answer me this, graphics wh0re, what does the booty of Sony taste like since you kiss sony’s @$$ so much?

  • Great new! Now I hope Diablo 3 will join the list :D!

  • I’m pretty confident that GTA V will do the same.

  • I keep reading NBA 2k14 will be available for upgrade. I don’t see it on here though..

  • What about GTA IV and V?!?

  • @ 155 Profane-lite

The reason why trade-in of the PS3 copy shouldn’t be an issue is because Activision got paid for their CoD on PS3 when retailers bought their inventory. Sony, got paid when we’ll purchase the PS4 version for $10. This is advertising at its best. They want us, as consumers, to buy their product, the PS4. They will give us incentives to do that. What’s a free game or two if it means they get the penetration of system units over their competition?

So now for me, I have to either:

    1) Find a friend who will buy my physical PS3 copy for $60 so I can buy the digital copy for PS4.
    2) Trade in my physical copy, only getting about $30-$40 depending on the trade-in promos GameStop will have at that time and use whatever balance left just to buy the digital copy for PS3 and pay the $10 upgrade for the PS4 version.

And you may be asking “Why do this?” Maybe because I paid for in full my Prestige Edition ($199.99) for the PS3 since the PS4 version only existed in super limited quantity that no one knew about. How is it far I have spend equally more money, almost the price of a full game now to get the game how I want it?

  • @157 Profane-lite

Sorry, but I got two words for you that debunks this. “CROSS-BUY”. Sorry, but Sony has completely messed up this transition from PS3/PS4. All they had to do was use the same system in place when we buy PS3/Vita games and it would’ve been fine.

There’s no justification for paying money so you can “rent” out the digital copy you should own in the first place. Plus it totally defeats the purpose of me wanting to play my PS4 version while I lend out my copy on PS3 to a friend, or was that joke video aimed at Xbox One now needing to be applied to themselves?

  • me and my friend have one account that is shared in my ps3 and his ps3. can we share account in our ps4 like our ps3? and then buy one of those 4 game and play in our ps4?

  • Can we transfer the saves and trophy information as well?

  • For Playstation Plus members, do we get any deduction on the discounted price that is given to PSN members that are not subscribed to Playstation Plus?

  • @GGCAN

Thanks. I’ve read those articles about bringing the PS3 library with GaiKai.

At this point what I suspect is that a disc version of the PS3 games will work the same way this posts announces for the PS4 version. You will have to pay an upgrade fee and have to have the disc in your drive. I’d be willing to bet that the digital versions work the same way $10 and it’s yours to GaiKai.

  • Yay I got all those games for PS3 this is great! Wasn’t planning to get PS4 until after New Years anyways.

Will the PS4 be able to play online with PS3 players? And to play the PS4 game does the disc always have to be in the console or could it be put in the first time you play and then its not needed after that?

  • So we’ll be able to get Trophies for both versions of the game on the PS4?

  • @estoc You also forgot boring, engaging story, and terrible 3rd party support. If Nintendo was so good, why is most 3rd party companies not making ports on the Wii U? Those what you call BS games can be just as much fun or even better than Nintendo’s junk. Your lucky to see ports of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Watch_Dogs, but that’s all you get on this list.

Sony tastes like fresh cookies baked from the oven and Microsoft tastes like a pie sitting near the window. Unlike Nintendo, I bet it tastes like a can of gasoline. If I can’t get a PS4 and have to choose a Wii U, I rather take the new Xbox. Take that, Nintendrone. As long as Nintendo gets destroyed by either Sony or Microsoft, I’ll be happy with it.

  • im just sad that sony seems to have adopted microsoft’s capitalist ideas. the ONLY reason i enjoyed playstation games/systems in the past is because MP was free and no premium membership was required. but now i dont want a ps4, cancelled my pre order too. i know i have ps plus but its optional and paying child support means instant game collection is pretty much how i get “new games” but unless your servers get an awesome bump up i dont see your justification for all these fees now. just make the damn thing 499.99 and keep it free yo lol
but if you think about it thjs kinda explains the backwards compatibility bs between the ps2 and ps3.

im just hoping theres at least a year or two left before you give the ps3/vita the same capitalist treatment….

As Wario has known his whole life, “Greed will get you everything!” lol

  • Im gonna have to agree with the other 20 thousand people who want FIFA on this!

  • Am I the only one who is just waiting for the PS4 version. I dont feel like buying any more games for my PS3.

  • If Diablo 3 was part of the program, I’d buy the PS3 version now. Otherwise, I’m going to wait for the PS4 version.

  • These programs are nice in theory, but they are so often filled with strict rules, a small number of titles that are included, and their version of “small fee” is anyone’s guess.

Do yourself a favor, and If you are buying a PS4 simply wait 2 months and buy the PS4 versions.

  • They still have given very little information on weather or not our PSOne / PS2 Classics, MINI’s will transfer over to the PS4. They’ve said they will be available for streaming on the PS Vita TV device, but no details on pricing or weather we will have to buy everything all over again.

I really hope they choose to be nice. Keeping in mind some of us have already bought these games twice already.

  • If we buy any DLC on the Ps3 versions of games, will it transfer to our Ps4 versions. Like a season passes or preorder bonuses. And if we buy the Ps4 versions of the DLC, can we download it to our PS3?

  • So if I download the digital version of COD ghosts “hardened edition” on PS3 will I be able to still get the game all the map packs and extras on ps4 by paying the 10$ or do I have to pay more? Will the digital hardened edition transfer at all to the ps4?

  • I heard with FFXIV we will get the PS4 version for free. How will that work? Digital download?

  • So does this means that if I buy cod ghost or any other game digitally I’ll have the ps3 version and the ps4 version of the games without losing the ps3 rights

  • What I haven’t seen yet is are you able to transfer Grand Theft Auto 5(GTA5) to the PS4

  • This is a cool program and I would maybe use this for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag but I am assuming that save games are not transferable. Maybe the Multiplayer progress would carry over since that is stored on Ubisoft’s servers but I’m going to assume the single player progress is not and a big huge open world game is not something I would want to start over 3 weeks later. I’ll probably just wait for the PS4 version.

  • Yeah, what about the same deal for Diablo III? The only reason I jumped the gun and purchased it on PS3 was because I was under the impression I’d be able to upgrade to PS4 for $10…

  • I read something about, that upgrading FIFA 14 from Xbox360 to Xbox One would give you 60 dollar credit I think. Read it on EA’s website. Search “FIFA 14 60 dollar credit Xbox” or something on Google.

  • @ 159 estoc1 – I swear to God you’re one of the greatest trolls ever….did you really came to this post only to say that?…..really?….knowing its not true…ha any multiplatform game is better than nintendo exclusives….so there you have it.

  • @ 188 TheAGEoftheRKO – OMG I dont want to be rude but…dont you know how to read?…….”their PS4 versions” meaning games that will be available on PS4 as well….are you seeing any version of GTA 5 announced for PS4?…guess not.

  • I’m definitely getting BF4 and Watch Dogs on Ps3 so I can get that deal. Out does Microsoft’s deal.

  • This is kind of messed up, you all have a game for the shooters, the RPGers/Actioners…. but what about the sportsters..!!! On the European blog they are also getting NBA 2K14, whats the hang up for the U.S. WHERE IS NBA 2K14..???

  • so i can buy the ps3 version and upgrade it on my ps4 and ill still be able to use the game on both consoles?

  • ehh kinda hectic to be honest.

and why not just the digital version? why the hell do you have to put the PS3 disc there for checking?

  • So if i upgrade my games to PS4 (i want the collectors editions for Watchdogs, Assassins Creed, and possibly COD) do i only need the disc in once, or at all times when playing the digital version on PS4?

  • What about Dragon Age Inquisition?
does anyone know a specific detail?
I know the game isn’t coming soon, but if someone purchases a PS3 version, can he upgarde it as well for limited time?
