PlayStation Plus: October Preview

I’m a sucker for fantasy. If a game allows it, I’ll create an elf mage because magic is awesome. This month I can do just that as Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is entering the Instant Game Collection. With a tale crafted by NY Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, stunning visuals from Todd McFarlane, and a customizable combat system, Reckoning has a lot to offer RPG fans. The mix-and-match combat means I can get my magic fix while also smashing things in the face with a hammer, or stabbing them with a sword and other various pointy weapons, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

Sine Mora on PS VitaKingdoms of Amalur Reckoning on PS3Poker Night 2 on PS3Shadow of the Colossus on PS3Hotline Miami on PS Vita

You may remember that last month we added Team Ico’s original cult classic ICO to the IGC, so their equally beloved sequel Shadow of the Colossus seemed like a natural follow-up. Slaying the majestic Colossi should make you feel something (read: incredibly guilty), but hey, you gotta save your #1 girl, right? In a completely different vein, Plus members will also receive Poker Night 2, which is an amusing twist on the classic card game. With GLaDOS as the dealer and opponents like Claptrap from Borderlands and Ash from Army of Darkness you can sit back, have a laugh and bet all your fake money away.

PS Vita owners are in for a couple treats – both the gorgeous shmup Sine Mora and the critically acclaimed top-down shooter Hotline Miami are joining the Instant Game Collection later this month. Sine Mora boasts stunning backdrops and cinematics as well as a slightly different shoot-em-up mechanic – you are in a constant race against the clock and the only way to get more time is to kill enemies. Hotline Miami embraces hardcore twitch-based play, which means you may need to repeat levels multiple times, but once you get through it it’s incredibly satisfying. Since Hotline Miami is a Cross-Buy title, you’ll be able to download it for both PS Vita and PS3.

These games will hit the Instant Game Collection at various times throughout the month, so check back with us every Monday morning for that week’s update.

  • @Ryumoau Hey Ryumoaner, that “Poker” game can help you unlock exclusive items for Borderlands 2. You won’t be able to anywhere else. Love that you still enjoy being a troll as usual.

@PainOfSarrow As always, you’re being such a pain. Soon he’ll just bite you too.

@hazelcabug Why don’t you be shy and show to your true feelings to your mother as your wife? She does pay for your games after all. It’s your fault that you got yourself ripped off, don’t blame anyone else.

  • Neither happy nor upset with the selections this month. Could have been better, and judging by last month, could have been a lot worse. I got a good price on a few years of plus, though, so I’m paying very little for these…basically–anything other than a running head start kick to the walnuts would illicit the same response.

  • kingdoms of amalur is great!! those who haven’t played it should have a blast..
but i guess most people will be playing GTA V multiplayer hahaa

  • I’m gonna need a larger HD, stat! Any suggestion, as far as external HD’s?

  • Bought Hotline Miami last week.

    Seriously. :|

  • Having read that Eu and NA use different strategies, I am curious if the NA strategy is to follow the distant footsteps of PS+Eu. Can we then safely predict Far Cry 3, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, and ACIII by 2014 (but obviously no 2 retail games in one month, that would be just plain ridiculous and this is PS+ NA of course). SotC is amazing, but I think it is pretty weak to have distributed it separately from Ico just to stretch things out another week. Just my two cents.

  • Finally Great month!!
    Thanks Sony!

  • Finally, an RPG for the IGC! Crying shame I already platted KoA while I was waiting, though.

Win some, lose some, I guess. *shrug* Otherwise, great lineup for Oct.!

  • So… you’re telling me that past month we got Ico HD and this one Shadow of the Colossus separately? wtf? they come in bundle!

  • not bad

  • @ carlpeon

Who are you? I should shut up because… you said so?

Listen, junior, I wasn’t even saying all that stuff for your benefit. I was talking to Funky0ne who brought up his life story first and I was sharing my own experiences in return. Is there a problem with that?

  • Alamur is a great example of a game I’ve always wanted to try but never wanted to risk a purchase with. I don’t pirate games, but this is exactly how a service can win out against piracy. Perhaps in the future the game selection can open up and help nullify piracy all together the way Hulu and Netflix do for video.

  • @ Gamerzlimited

I wouldn’t worry about that little Sesame Street thug if I were you. The guy is such a loser he can’t even take the time to spell simple words correctly. I scrolled through the comments and saw that he posted something but I didn’t even take the time to read it. If it hurts your brain to read it, it isn’t worth the time. Obviously he was too busy being a “G” on da streetz that he didn’t have time for school. Oh wait, no, he just stays inside all day playing games and surfing the web. Oh well. I’m sure he’s fooling someone out there with his wankster tales.

I already know what his post says anyway:

“yo dawggggg sdats da wuttttt i’mmmm beeeee talkinnnnnn boutttttttttttttttttttttt mayne i hate prime he is aa foollll cuz im realyy jelus of himm but dont tell no one okkkk and yo mannnn i luv carlpeon hes myyyy mancrush dawg yo mannn lets meet sumwere homieeee and feel eachuther upppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp my dawggggg yo dawg im realyyy smart an stuffff cant u tell????? i be bangin on da internettt like a tru gangstaaaa back too my gamesss now dawgggg”

“Sony should start banning people from posting when all the do is beg for AAA games. Its FREE; take whatever the give you and be happy. You ungrateful kids need to put down the ps3 controller that your parents bought you and go play in traffic.”

    Now you’re talkin’!

  • I’m so excited for this months plus update because all the games, minus the Sine Mora I’m totally looking forward to getting. This is why I love playstation and this why I love you guys. Please continue these awesome games!

  • poker night for sure when will it be out in October

  • October sounds amazing :D

never played Kingdoms of Amalur, but have been wanting to, maybe this will quell those “we want RPGs!” people.

Shadow of the Colossus…why it could not have been released with ICO a couple of weeks ago still confuses me, but whatever, we still get it :D I bought it on PS2 used a little bit before the HD collection released, now I kinda regret it.

Poker Night 2: I have this on PC, and it is freaking hilarious listening to the characters banter (plus the elimination with the borderlands set (cards, chips, and table) made me bust out laughing), it’s a really nice addition, and shall be getting a download when it comes out.

Hotline Miami: another game I have on PC, really a blast, but it is god-awful hard, like Demon’s souls…almost, and it was just released 2 months ago, maybe that will quell the “we want new games!” people

Sine Mora: never heard of it, but after looking it up, a 2.5D bullet hell game? yes please :D

I love this month, and I THINK you guys have appealed to those people complaining every month, of course there will be more complainers, still, nice work as always :D

  • RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE POST:
How can you offer us Hitman Absolution, a game with technical issues that has left hundreds of people (at least) without the posibility of coming to an end, because the saved data gets lost randomly (the same for the Contracts Mode). At the same time, you are supporting the bad behavior of the company in charge of HA, because promissed on their official forum (forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?s=563c38ee688739184931ffe696d27f03&t=131742) to give us a solution but they have done nothing from the released date until now.
I consider this disrespectful, specially coming from Sony…How is this possible?
I’m STILL waiting for an official answer…

  • Europe gets much better games than us… Lame.

  • I was just looking a getting Kingdoms of Amalur. Wil there be any discounts to purchase it or its dlc?

  • Awesome month for PS+!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually had to buy a Vita because I have such a great library of Vita games thanks to PS+ (of course with the 32gb card). This variety this month is among the best! Seriously, well done Sony, well done!

    – a proud PS+ member

  • Sweet, been waiting for Hotline Miami. Wish my PS3 was still working, SotC was one of the best games I’ve played.

  • WTF? SotC now? separate game of collection like ICO? Kingdom, Hotline and Sine Mora? These games were a long time in Plus Euro, except Poker…. best gifting something original that has not been in the other Plus,
    Bad update

  • im actualy surprised there isint any horror games on this
although i really am happy about kingdoms of amalur:D been waiting for that game for a while:D

  • i have to say this is the first ps plus update that i actually jumped cuz im excited for all the games. keep em coming.

  • This looks like crap. Nintendo is still better than you.

  • OH YES I have always wanted Kingdoms of Amalour but its been a tough two years and still hard that I have had to cut back on buying games and rely mostly on plus :(. Thanks for making this happen.

Question, I haven’t seen a racing game on plus for a while, maybe a bit of most wanted or burnout or something as a suggestion for next month maybe?

I can’t wait to see what you will release to celebrate the coming of Playstation 4 :)

  • Great month! ( I like last month too )

P.S. Bring the 64gb card to the U.S. I need more room.

  • Amalur is a fantastic, underrated game. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn’t played it yet.

  • Decent month from my view, I’ll give Kingdoms of Amalur & Hotline Miami a go before my + sub expires.

  • Very excited about this month! Awesome variety, I look forward to trying the ones I have never played, and I’m very glad to see variety in both ps3 and the vita.
Poker game got me very excited for some reason, probably because I’ll get to play a goofy game that is easy and relaxing.
SOTC is one of my all time favorites, if you haven’t played it give it a go and don’t give up untl at least 6 bosses =)
Nice to have some more vita games, I just need to make my son sleep so that’s have time to play.

Thank you for early update also! This is a good month, keep ps3 and vita content coming when the ps4 launches! I want PS+ to retain its place as the best value, you blow away Xbox Gold =) <3

  • I am very happy with the October update! Here are some titles I would love to see in the future.

    PS3

    Dantes Inferno
Call of Duty(Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 1)
    Red Dead Redemption
    Pain
    Hoard

    Vita

    Ragnarok Odyssey
    Unit 13
    Metal Gear Solid Collection

Maybe these comments help, 2 games I suggested previously are on this time. #ILovePSPlus

  • I took a look at his profile and he doesn’t have any trophies on his games, not even Hitman: Absolution. More less to take this guy seriously. This guy is nothing more of a troll trying to scam Sony:
@maxideaccion I’m an Hitman owner, I find this comment disrespectful and it offends me.

@estoc1 Stop ignoring me. You still haven’t answered my questions. Explain to me why Nintendo still has region lock and terrible 3rd party support. And why don’t you tell me if they are better than Microsoft? Admit it, Sony and Microsoft will destroy them in 2 months.

@fresno75 Do you know what’s even more sad about those two? They don’t even have an avatar and not bothering to use the default ones. They’re too poor to even use a “free” avatar.

  • @PrimeroIncognito You mean PainOfSarrow? Yeah, I agree with you. He’s nothing more but a tool. I don’t know why people like him saying crap about both of us. The only thing we have in common is that we hate idiots. But what I hate even more is those two guys I’m directing my comment to on my previous post (Not fresno75).

  • Good month but any chance we could get far cry 3 soon?

  • prime once said he will never acknowledge me again but once again he cant help himself but to attempt to mock me. so predictible as i said. everything he says sounds the same. i swear he is just copy and pasting the same crap he repeated the last time. watch him respond even though he claims not to read my post haha gullable tool… hey gamer limited are you done swallowing his sack yet ? sure dont sound like it.

  • This is probably the best Plus update in… well, ever!

I already own Amalur, but more people need to see how awesome the game is.

Now all of these little crybabies on the Blog can shut their whiny little yaps about never getting any RPGs through Plus.

  • My question.
1: Can I upgrade/purchase my psn+ membership/buy games from sony website from PC? If Yes, Please mention website.
    2. My PS3 HDD is almost full, its 320gb, Full with games most of them I play, Can I buy games and store on USB HDD? I plan to buy 1 year membership, there are lot of games on the way I would like to download more digital games in my library,
Replacing HDD formatting backup consume lot of time, I would like this issue to be resolved by enabling user to download games on usb HDD, If possible can you add feature enabling PSN+ Users to download digital ps3 games from PC and play on PS3 via USB HDD (why because I notice PS3 download from PSN server is so slow, PC can be faster as we can explore more reliable network options).
I understand security policy concerns bla bla bla… there are ways to deal with this concern, (look at apple inc)
I got many suggestions and recommendations that need to be discussed and plan.

  • @PainOfSarrow I don’t know if Primero really does copy and paste his posts over and over, but I’ll see it when I see it. Right now, I don’t. So butt off. And stop forgetting the z in the middle my name.

I PMed maxideaccion and estoc1. I can’t wait until they replied back to me and I’ll post their replies here or on Monday’s PS+ update. That will show them how stupid they look right now.

  • Great month, IMHO. I was really hoping they would put SotC on the list. The other games look like fun, too.

  • Kristine, you truly are the best! :). Shadow of the colossus, Hotline Miami and Kingdoms Of Amalur Reckoning are all games ive wanted fo play for a while, SO happy to get them soon!

  • no psp games. Thanks you

  • Yay more ps vita luv!

  • Looks like a decent month ahead.

Wouldn’t be opposed to an extra slot on the PS+ roster for PS classics though, just to keep those who keep this service mainly for the vita a little more invested. I do like the use of cross buy though, although I wish it took up on of those PS3 slots not a vita one, but then with a small library on vita it’d most likely be hard add to many extra…

Anyway, more cross buy, classics and vita! Although never opposed to any PSP RPGs.

  • Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning…kick ass!!!! As always PlayStation Plus NEVER disappoints :-) still playing GTA V but I’ll be adding even more games to my download list …got enough now for like a whole year lol thanks so much PlayStation team :-)

  • The IGC program is a pure game giveaway. Period. For those of you who complain every week, did you know that the IGC didn’t always exist? Before that, we were lucky to get a free game. It’s true we got better discounts back then, but the IGC was added at no extra charge to a service we were already paying for. So it really is a bonus; it really is free.

That doesn’t mean constructive commentary needs to be abolished. Ask for what you would have liked instead. Don’t just whine about what’s being offered.

I swear many of the comments on here read like this: “omg yurrup pluss bettur, na plus sux. fale.”

  • great! dont have any of this games :D

  • Best month in a long time!

I’d say PlayStation is finally listening!

PLEASE KEEP UP THE NO PSP GAMES, ALL PS VITA GAMES! PLEASE
