PS3 System Software Update (v.4.50)

Eric Lempel's Avatar + Posted by Eric Lempel on Oct 01, 2013 // VP, Sony Network Entertainment

Later today, the next system software update for PlayStation 3 (version 4.50) will be available. We’ve added some features and improvements to make downloading system updates and Sony Entertainment Network online store purchases more convenient for all PSN users. In addition, we’ve made it easier to move games, movies and other content from your PS3 to PlayStation Vita with Wi-Fi data transfer.

Here are some of the new enhancements you’ll find when you update your PS3 to version 4.50:

  • Auto download of system software updates has been expanded to support all PSN users.
  • Auto download support of purchases made on the Sony Entertainment Network online store will be made available to all PSN users.
  • New options for Trophy privacy settings allow users to set which trophies are visible.

With the auto download features for system updates and SEN online store purchases, you can set a two hour time interval for your PS3 to turn on from standby mode and check for updates as well as content to be automatically downloaded. Any purchases made in the SEN online store before your designated time will automatically start downloading during that interval. For example, if your Automatic Update time is set for 10AM-12PM, and you purchase a game while you’re away from your PS3 via the SEN online store (at work or school via PC or maybe on your daily commute via iOS or Android) at 9:30AM, the content you purchased will start downloading while you’re away. This adds convenience and will help you get into your games quicker, so you can start playing when you return home. You can find the new settings on the XMB under  [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Automatic Update].

For additional information on PS3 system update v.4.50, including how to update your system, please click here when the update goes live.

Let us know what you think about these new features in the comments below.

Has anyone figured out how to transfer data between the PS3 and Vita over Wifi? I upgraded my PS3 to 4.50 and my Vita is on 2.61, but if I select Content Manager on the Vita and choose PS3, it tells me to connect via USB. I did that thinking maybe it needed to do that once, but there’s still no option for Wifi data transfer with PS3. It’s only there for PC.

With the PS4 coming out in just over a month its pretty safe to assume the a PSVITA update allowing Wi-Fi transfer to the PS3~PSVITA is coming sooner than later, along with whatever new and wonderful features are in store for the PS4… But with that said I feel a lot can be done with the PS3 before it makes it final swan song into obscurity. I agree with a lot of the comments here regarding the ability to remove 0% games from the trophies list it only makes sense. Now me as a consumer feel its only right to get your moneys worth out of any product you purchase, and I do just that. I put a 1TB HDD in my PS3 and I use it to its fullest potential, movies, music, photos and games bless my PS3 with a wealth of entertainment options, but with that much content a way to search it out would be an incredible convenience to those of us who have a large library of media whether it be games, music, or movies, some sort of search function integrated into the XMB would be amazing…

I can’t find any setting or anything at all on my PS3 that will allow me to transfer data from my PS3 to Vita using Wifi. Nothing in the forums. Nothing in the always updated after the fact manual. It’d be nice if they actually pointed you to instructions rather than just saying hey, you can do it. I mean one screen shot would be nice.

I hate how 4.50 is out and the website still only has 4.46 available for download!
the last 3 or 4 mandatory updates that i attempted to install via the psn network froze up my system for days.
it was some magical miracle each time for me to revive my system without loosing everything.
So last time i tried downloading the update to a USB and installed from there.
but i cant frigging do that right now which really sucks ass! so i finally bought grand theft auto 5 today since today the online servers should have been flipped on. and now this. I have to risk freezing my system and probably wont even get the chance to play this game as i battle recovering from the freeze up for several days again all because for some reason sony can release the update on psn but cant bother to update the download on their site. thanks sony…

Dear PlayStation Blog

I like the idea of the hiding trophies, but I think it needs a little work. Instead of having to click each individual list to know if it is hidden or not. Could you add a star or a red and green dot next to the game title? It would help minimize mistakes of clicking wrong lists. I checked mine three or four times so I would not make a mistake, but I am.still paranoid about it. Thanks.

+ Anton_Timo on October 1st, 2013 at 9:20 pm said:

you can arrange your game trophies by title but not games installed by title which is stupid and as for trophy hiding there is no option to hide trophies from yourself or non 100% ones, this is very misleading the hiding trophies hides trophies from others e.g. anyone, friends of friends or friends only. as for auto download we already have that if we are ps plus and i haven’t seen the option to auto download if im not ps plus -_-

these options Sony adds takes them months where we come up with them in minutes this shouldn’t take Sony months -_-
we need the option to sort a-z games sort order downloads DELETE trophies we dont want even if it affects our level and rename our ID

@118 Go to a trophy, press triangle and choose to hide it. You can also change overall trophy visibility to restrict it to yourself, friends, everyone, etc in the Account Settings Privacy screen.

Sony you have failed to address the “stuck at 99%” install for years now. Yet again my system is totally screwed, my data is lost, and none of these updates even apply to me. You need to start giving users the option to update or not to update. If a game doesn’t work because the user will need to update, fine, but imposing a forced update just to get on the Playstation Network is downright ridiculous.

Fix the 99% issue.

Please.. for once and for all. Just let us delete our trophies so many people wanna get rid of the trophies for games they don’t have anymore, it’d help and keep it much more cleaner and organized by heaps.

Xbox let you do it.

Oh and by the way,
Would love a new update for the PlayStation iPhone app. It’s a mess.

It’s dumb that your updates are focused on trophy’s really know one cares. Were gamers we want more ways to store memory why not make an update that allows us to use an external hard drive to store our extra content with out having to reinstal it on the HDD once we move it to the external HD. All the ps3 games that are coming out now want you to store like 6 to 8 gb on your system I have a 60GB so I can have playstation one and 2 backwards compatibility and I have like no more room for games sucks never had this problem with a wii. seriously fix your **** before you come out with new **** and rock star could use the same advice lol.

Hey Eric,

I’m glad to see that the PlayStation 3 is still being updated even though the PlayStation 4 is right around the corner. Although there are still some major things and some simple additions I’d like to see added to the ps3 through firmware updates. I hope that these suggestions will make it to the firmware team before they decide to stop updating the PlayStation 3.

- A shuffle option added under both the picture and video menus
- The ability to delete multiple messages at one time in the message box
- A search option in the download list
- The ability to group games and their corresponding DLC together in the download list
- Expand the amount of themes able to be put on the PlayStation 3 to over 100
- For true customization, create the ability to make a theme playlist and the ability to randomize it
- New visualizations for the music player

Sorry, but due to Sony’s european branch incompetence and ignorance, my only way is to ask here:

Why again isn’t in this FW delete option for insulting, forced, unremovable, undeletable Singstar in XMB for european users? Why it needs to be so aggressive so it shows everytime i change disc, everytime i switch on PS3, even if will never play it? Why do you persistently reject one simple solution? Even dumb person can understand, that delete option can solve all our complaints without harming customers who appreciate forced Singstar in their XMB.

Quote from another forum which nicely sums Sony arrogance:

- How do i remove this s&%t from XMB?
- You can’t, that’s the new Sony strategy of making customer satisfied.

Nice update for 4.50 firmware on PS3 system, however I been waiting for closed captions feature support to use when playing DVDs and blu-ray disc movies on PS3 system, but was hoping the firmware version 4.50 could be it for closed captioning feature support for dvds and blu-ray contents though. I also certainly hope Sony did a testing on the new firmware before releasing it to the public. I mean, remember about 4.45 version that caused PS3 systems bricked and everything? I’m just suggesting Sony would from now on to do a every future firmware test before releasing to the public. I’m also sure that Sony would want every single PS3 systems to be safe as of NOT bricked at all. Have a happy october.

Really good software update!
Thanks Sony to all your support.

But I’d like to be able to delete those games or trophies record with 5% completed or less that I will never play again. That’d be so cool if those data could disappear from the trophy list!

+ Hooligantuan on October 2nd, 2013 at 4:42 am said:

It would have been great if we could have hidden the trophies on a per game basis, instead of an All or None approach via the Privacy Settings.

I know I bought a few games that I didn’t like, and now I have them constantly hanging onto my profile with 0% Completion. I thought this update was going to make it so I could toss the dead weight out of my trophy case.

Please consider this for a future update. We should be able to choose which games show, not just whether they show or not and to whom.
