Velocity 2X on PS4: Learning From Gamers Like You

Hey folks. We had such a good time showcasing Velocity 2X at the Eurogamer Expo, we’d like to share our experience with you!

First of all, we managed to find the courage to jump on stage to talk about Velocity 2X in a Developer Session. For those who missed it, we talked about how we’ve approached making a PS Minis game desirable for PS4.

Velocity 2X takes everything that worked in Velocity Ultra and applies it to a side-scrolling platformer. That’s right — in Velocity 2X you can get out of your ship to run around on foot. You can also teledash through obstacles and throw a personal teleporter to reach high ledges and solve puzzles.

We’ve also revealed the new enemy in the series: the evil Vokh. They’re massive, fast, and tricky to defeat because of their advanced shield technology. However, as you’ll see from the video below, Kai’s teledash creates a spacetime warp that disrupts their shield temporarily, allowing you to get some cheeky shots from behind! Watch some pre-alpha platforming gameplay here. Of course, once you’ve taken down the bad guys on foot, you can jump back in your Quarp Jet and continue your mission in flight.

Everything you see here is pre-alpha, which means there’s still a lot of work to do, but as you can see the game is shaping up nicely with a really fresh art style and some dazzling visual effects, like anamorphic lens flare, bloom, light refraction and dynamic environment lighting.

Our booth was busy throughout the show, which lasted four days. Lots of people came back each day to try and beat their scores, dragging their friends with them.

We also learned lots from watching people play, such as making the telepod throwing easier, and we’ve also decided to remove the lives system. Now you can squash your ship at the bottom of the screen or jump onto boiling hot heaters as many times as you like. You won’t get many gold medals though, and we think that’s punishment enough.

We also found that the game was a hit with male and female players, as well as young and old. Broad appeal for an indie game. Yay! We think part of the appeal is our awesome female character, Lt. Kai Tana.

We hope you like what you see folks, and until next time please follow us on Twitter and visit the official site for more information.

  • Ehh looks alright idk why I would buy this if resogun is coming out for free

  • This looks awesome!

  • Hey folks, for some reason the gameplay video wasn’t included in the post, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAjXlxX8htI :D

  • I can’t wait, I loved Velocity both as a Mini and on the Vita. 2X is still coming to the Vita as well, right? I’ll have a PS4, but this is more of a portable game for me. If so are you planning for Cross Buy/Save?

  • Love Velocity Ultra on Vita, even though I got lazy and never finished it. Still it’s fun and really looking forward to this one. The platforming part looks to be real awesome. Definitely can’t wait.

  • Definitely getting this on my Vita… Just platinumed Velocity Ultra! <3 That was… a very taxing task.

  • I’m very glad for you guys at Futurlab for real…seeing you guys starting with minis and now you’re going PS4….its a great time for you guys isnt it?….I’m rooting for you and Velocity is a great game…I had lots of fun with the mini and the Vita version Velocity Ultra…but I’m not interested in PS4 games thus not in a PS4 version as well.So I’m looking forward to play this baby on my Vita. You guys can count with my support.Cheers!!

    • It is a very exciting time! Also pretty stressful as we have a lot of work to do yet. We’re not out of the woods until the game is out and in your hands :D

  • So was that PS4 trophy icons that I saw pop up ?

  • Screw PS4; yay Vita!

  • You guys at FuturLab really are working your magic yet again!! This will no doubt be a day 1 (Vita) download for me!! One can only hope that other developers come along to make games for the Vita that have a fraction of the love/quality you guys put into your games.

I do have one question or concern though…
Seeing as how this game is also being made for the PS4, does that in any way mean that the PS4 ver will be better than the Vita ver from a visual standpoint and any other aspects of the game??

My hope is that the 2 versions will be the same and that those who don’t or won’t own a PS4 won’t be missing out on anything.

Thanx again for all of the Vita support thus far and thank you for your time.

    • Hiya,

That is a very valid question and concern. Velocity 2X is a PS Vita game that we are also publishing on PS4.

We are getting all the performance we can squeeze out of the PS Vita for 60fps, post processing effects, lighting, particles etc. It looks lovely on PS Vita now, and it will only get better for release.

What you see above is all PS Vita.

On PS4 we’ll be able to tweak things like the lifetime of the each individual particle, the number of particles, the number of lights we are able to have in the scene etc. Things that don’t make sense on the PS Vita screen as it would get too cluttered, but will make sense on the TV.

      Hope that makes sense!

  • Will the Vita version have 320kbps audio assets? Will the PS4 have 24-bit/lossless audio assets?

I know you guys can do great gameplay and graphics, but so far audio quality hasn’t been your strong suit.

Will the Vita and PS4 trophies be unified?

  • Just watched the presentation — really awesome of you to share the schema of your design spreadsheets and the “rhythm” concept. The “jump jump dash” musicality of control is one of the things I loved about the original Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

Will the character animations be improved once the game ships? It is *so* awesome to see the primary character being a female, and not be sexualized, but the animation seems a bit chunky. Some basic hair physics so the hair flows behind her while running, or flows upward while falling, would be a really nice touch.

I hope the platforming has more puzzles than the run+gun+coin collecting shown in the video. I don’t need another Guacamelee, even though I loved it.

  • @ 10 xClayMeow – I agree 100%.
