Surge Deluxe on PS Vita

Hello, PlayStation.Blog readers! I’m delighted to announce Surge Deluxe for PS Vita!

Surge was originally released on PlayStation Mobile and was well received by press and gamers, who took to the leaderboards (and NeoGAF) to show off their skills.

Surge Deluxe is FuturLab’s response to feedback received from top players on those leaderboards (and from the NeoGAF community). They demonstrated a deep understanding and appreciation for Surge that was way beyond anything we could have anticipated!

If you’re new to Surge, check out this trailer for the original game. The simple, block-chaining and screen clearing mechanics gradually reveal their tactical depth as special blocks get added to the mix. Advanced players won’t just vent pressure to stay in the game, they’ll utilize the vents at critical times to multiply their scores and create massive clearance combos.

So what can you expect from Surge Deluxe?

Surge Deluxe on PS Vita

New Combiner Block

Our research has shown that Multiplier blocks are the most sought after for achieving big scores, but they rarely dropped in the right color or at the right time. We’ve removed the color requirement on the Multiplier block now and added a new Combiner block that allows players to create their own Multipliers. If you’re quick and careful enough you can create 5x, 6x, 7x and higher multipliers for use in strategic play!

New Chain Linker Block

The Chain Linker block allows you to connect different colored chains together. Simply connect a chain of blocks to the Chain Linker, and then connect to any other colored block to create a bridge between colors!

The whole chain is converted to the same color so you can use as many of these blocks as you can find to create MASSIVE chains!

Surge Deluxe 100% Color Blind Friendly

I’m color blind and acutely aware of the frustration that comes from trying to discern and match colors in games like Surge. FuturLab received a whole host of requests for a color blind-friendly version of the game, and with Surge Deluxe we’ll deliver just that.

Now each color is represented by a shape, and we’ve made sure that you only have to glance at two blocks to know whether they are a match or not. I’ll have to find another excuse for being beaten on the leaderboards…

Scoring System Reworked

When Surge was created, a score of around 4 million points was the highest FuturLab had achieved internally. When released to the public, the 10 million mark was broken within days.

The posts on NeoGAF from players competing for the top spot changed from talk about tactics and maximizing scores, to discussing the restrictive scoring system. Their feedback was enormously helpful, and we’ve used it to improve gameplay. The scoring system in Surge Deluxe has been redesigned to reward better players, increase the score spread, and remove any grinding. So thanks NeoGAF, this one is for you!

PSN Trophies and Leaderboards

Of course!

We are aiming to launch Surge Deluxe in 2014. You can keep up to date with FuturLab by signing up to the website newsletter, or by following @FuturLab on Twitter.

Thanks!

Hi folks!

Does the game have a rough size estimate? Like…
10mb, 100mb, or 1000mb?

Guys it looks great! I’m excited and scared at the same time because my wife wouldn’t give my Vita back once she got her hands on the PSM Surge. Now I’m not sure I’ll ever get it back!!

My PSPMinis review of Surge is one of my favourites.

Hopefully this is the version that turns Surge from the great game it already is to the classic it deserves to be.

I saw this got a lot of steam back when it first came out, especially with the LBP version. The LBP version was… alright. You can’t expect much more. :P

After playing a lot of the demo of Velocity Ultra (and loving it, but haven’t purchased it yet… might wait on a sale) and now seeing this, I think you guys are going to tear a hole in my wallet. :P

Any word on a pricing model or a file size on Surge Deluxe? I know you guys are still at least a couple of months out, but an estimate would be highly appreciated.

Keep up the amazing work, FuturLab! :D *rocking out to Pressure Playa*

It’s very sad that the PS Vita only gets mobile releases and small indie games. We all have a phone for those games and it is a total waste of the PS Vita’s potential. I am really skeptical about the priority that Sony is giving to indie developers. While it is an excellent way to have variety of games, what will happen to the big, AAA, games? and if the focus will be on small indie games (since that’s all that has been talked for the PS4), then what is the reason to own a dedicated console or handheld for gaming, if I can get most of those games on iPhone or Android?

If most of Sony’s developers have several teams, they should just at least one to focus on the PS Vita instead of having all making PS4 games. Why releasing a PS Vita if none of the first party developers are making games for it?

Speak for yourself. WE don’t all have phones for those games. I still have an old, boring cell phone. If you don’t like the mobile games on the Vita don’t buy them but some of us want them.

@9: I like having OPTIONS.

Indie developers like this aren’t going to be making GTA: PS Vita. We’re losing nothing by having indies. We’re just gaining a bunch of indie games that are awesome.

And first party developers are making games for PS Vita, and they have 2nd party games coming too. Now shoo.

@12: Just buy the current model. OLED or bust.

By this point Furturlab is quickly becoming one of my absolute favorite Vita developers. I hope you guys end up tying the knot with Sony sooner rather than later. I would love to see what you could do with a big budget!

Thanks FuturLab, I will definitely buy this and Velocity 2X next year. Velocity is one of my favorite Vita games, except the minesweeper game which I can’t beat. >:( But it’s still a good game.

This is great news, I have not tired this game, but I really like what I see. I am extremely proud of you guys. You broke onto the scene with a couple of great minis and continued to step you game up. In my opinion you have a great future ahead of you, and I am really glad you have chosen to develop you great games for the vita, please continue you hard work. I will be eagerly anticipating this game, Velocity Ultra 2, and whatever you do after that. Please the great games coming.

My first comment on this type of ports is does it support Vita native controls, as I’m not much of a fan of touch controls which is why I purchased a Vita event though I already have iphone and ipad. However, looking at the game which does look fun, it seems like touch controls are better suited to it. So I will simply say that the Vita is not suited to playing touch-only games as it designed to be held in two hands and it is uncomfortable to hold it for any length of time in one hand which make touch intensive like this games a poor fit. I much rather play something like this on my iphone.
