PS4 System Software Update 1.50 Details

We wanted to shed some light on system software update version 1.50 for PS4, which will launch simultaneously with the system’s official North American launch on November 15th, 2013. By updating to system software version 1.50, you’ll be able to experience a variety of new features in addition to the basic functions of PS4.

The system software update 1.50 is approximately 300 MB, and will include the following features:

    • Remote Play
Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networks by using PS4 Link (Depending on network environment or titles, remote play performance may vary outside of the home). We anticipate that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play. The latest PS Vita system software version, to be released soon, will be required to use PS4 Link.

    • Second Screen
Users can use the PS4 Link application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation App for iPhone, iPad, and Android-based smartphones and tablets, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on The Playroom, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

    • Record, take screenshots, and upload gameplay effortlessly
The PS4 system provides dedicated, “always on” video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the Share button on DualShock 4, take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game—the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system’s launch in North America, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter, though users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Facebook and Twitter.

    • Broadcast and spectate gameplay
The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch live internet streaming services (users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Ustream and Twitch). There are two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation users. Second, users can spectate friends’ PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

    • Play as you download
This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. The time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments, and not all titles will support this feature When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

    • Multi log-in
A maximum of four users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multiplayer game together on a single PS4 system.

    • Party (Voice chat)
By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

    • Face recognition and voice commands
Users with PlayStation Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DualShock 4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DualShock 4, or PlayStation Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features; please refer to PS4’s online manual for recognizable voice commands.

    • Background music player
Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music. Learn more about Music Unlimited here.

    • Online Multiplayer
PlayStation Plus members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

  • Blu-ray Disc and DVD player
Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents. When using for the first time, users must connect to the internet to activate this feature.

Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game. We will provide additional information about system software update version 1.50 and features available at the PS4 system’s North America launch, and features that will be available after launch, in the near future.

  • I am VERY disappointed that the pause and resume function is not ready nor has a release date. This was one of the primary reasons I was immediately getting a next gen console, and pre-ordered (and paid) for a PS4. If Microsoft confirms that this function will be ready by their launch date, I am going to cancel the PS4, 2nd controller, PS4 eye, charger, and games that I have pre-ordered and fully paid for, and move it all over to XBox One. They really should not have talked about features (and games) that will be part of their system right away, when they really don’t plan on having it at launch (because if it was within the “launch window” of the next three months, they would of published that these things are still part of the launch window).

  • Thanks for all the info. I’m exciting about the launch, although it looks like I won’t have any games I want to play on Day 1.

  • What’s with the first update being 1.50? Normally a number like that would take at least a year to get to. Wouldn’t 1.10 be the right number to go with or did they have a lot of internal updates before the final version was put on the PS4?

  • Would love Youtube upload support and save to HDD so you can upload later or export to computer. Please tell me these are here.

  • @ FarscapeBebop

I can’t believe that your sole preocupation with PS4 is the suspend/resume fonction…
Cancel your PS4 and have fun with your featureless X1 (that btw will require a MANDATORY 1GB patch to even play games offline)

  • Please please, please allow us to play our music from the hard drive in the background!

  • A firmware update same day at ps4 launch? Is there a reason why it’s not on the ps4 already?

  • What? No suspend/resume like vita at launch??? :((

  • So, the Background music player can’t play music off HDD or DLNA media servers?

  • So I guess half of the system don’t work with out update?

  • Hopefully it won’t take too long for the missing features to be patched in. At least most of the big ones made it for launch :)

  • I’m really upset that is only limited to share video and pictures over Facebook and Twitter. I really wish they add some YouTube or Google+ support.

  • Will Bluetooth headsets be supported? Can we listen to our own music on the HDD while we play or just with MU?

  • I LOVE this FW update, It’ll be the best one in a LONG time.. the PS3 was cool, but the limited RAM killed Any chances of Real Multi-tasking, I hope my Local Music will work in games too, having MU in all games will be sweet, as for the Live streaming stuff, that will eat up my bandwidth in no time flat, but it’ll be worth it. I’ve been a Sony fan for 19+ Years, and I’ll never go to Xbone ever.. It’s just too cumbersome, and the GUI looks Awful. I’m no Windows 8 fan, so I’ll never go with the Xbox in any form as long as that GUI is the same.

I am a DAY ONE PS4 Owner, so please send me friend requests on 11/15, I need KZ: SF Friends.

  • @StealthBlade98

They’ve been boxing up PS4s for months and are still working on the operating system. If they waited until they finished the OS to start boxing them up for shipping, we would never get a PS4.

  • Why the hell doesn’t it ship with a functioning DVD player? People who don’t have access to the internet are just out of luck and get to stare at a $400 brick? What moron thought of that? (And yes I do know a handful of people who still don’t have web access at home. Many people even in the US do not.) You do realize this is what XBO was getting flack for when it was debuted right?

Poor decisions Sony. Very poor decisions

  • WHOA WHOA WHOA… TIME OUT STOP THE PRESSES… JUST STOP!

If I read this right, my blood is beginning to BOIL and I know I WILL BE 1 OF THE THOUSANDS WHO ARE GOING TO BE FUMING. YOU posted above that for BACKGROUND MUSIC…

Are you TELLING us, that THEE ONLY WAY TO LISTEN too BACKGROUND MUSIC, while we are playing Games, on the NEW PS4, is ONLY THROUGH, THE “MUSIC UNLIMITED?

IF TRUE, AND GOD, I HOPE IT’S NOT. UNLESS YOU MAKE MUSIC UNLIMITED 100% FREE, FOR THE FULL SERVICE, THE ONLY WAY WE CAN LISTEN TO MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND, WHILE PLAYING GAMES ON THE PS4 IS BY MAKING US, “PAY” FOR THAT MUSIC UNLIMITED SUBSCRIPTION?

IF TRUE…THAT IS 1,000,000,000% B.S!! TALK ABOUT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF US…UNREAL….

I SURE HOPE IT’S FALSE BECAUSE THAT’S BEEN IMPORTANT TO A LARGE % OF FOR FOR YEARS!!

  • Seems like this will be the first console launch for a lot of people in the comments.

  • Hello, Any word on when the PlayStation App for iPhone is going to be release in Canadian iTunes market ?

  • Sweet!! Now I can listen to music in the background while playing Infamous or Killzone.

  • I just noticed it says you can play games while they’re downloading. But it says supported titles. Isn’t that a feature all new games should support?

  • Background music player is STILL NOT WORKING on the majority of games for Vita.

  • FYI.

I chose Playstation over Xbox because……

#1 reason – was not having to pay for Xbox live.
#2 reason – I have liked Sony for its quality (although overpriced).

    #3 reason – Final Fantasy 7

You guys really need to start stepping up the patches needed to various discrepancies , and better price assessments to used copy listing prices.

Love Battlefield 4, but to shell out another 500+ dollars to play a game???

  • @ 122 – Rezolution.

Not sure about your comment for background music on the Vita.

    Mine works just fine.

Remember, it’s Music Unlimited background music in Offline mode they’re talking about.

  • CCCCCAAAAAANNNNNNTTTTTT WWWWWAAIIITTTTTTTT to have my baby in my room when it comes out! SO EXCITED!

  • @6, why do you assume that? That is already a part of the console at launch, these other features with the patch are being added. Not everything is coming with the patch, the console comes with features besides LMAO.

  • Is youtube still supported for video uploads becase facebook is useless to me

  • When will Sony’s flagship Pulse head set work with PS4? This needs to be added pronto.

  • Why is everyone saying suspend/resume should be in??? Who said it isn’t? The console comes with features that won’t need a patch ROFL. Most likely a power feature like suspend/resume is built into the system already. Geez.

  • @ 122 Rezolution77.

When you’re on the Vita and in Music Unlimited, click the Home feature, then settings…that’s where you can set it up.

As per the documentation on Music Unlimited on the Vita:

‘Background playback is a feature so you can play music in the background while using other applications. For example, you can enjoy games while listening to your favorite songs.’

For the Vita on Music Unlimited:

In Online Mode, tap “Home” located in the top left
    Tap Settings
    Tap Offline Settings
    Tap Offline Playback

  • I want to do LP youtube videos Direct from My PS4.. Make it Happen Sony :-)

I am glad we can get more friends than the Xbone. I just hope we can not only do Voice chat but Text chat and send messages to other people’s inbox.. I don’t want to be held back by this ps4.. Ps3 is great, but definitely could have benefited from 4+ GB of RAM..

I will get a PS4 Camera, eventually, but KillZone SF is too D*** important.. If GTA 5 looks really good on PS3/Xbox, Can’t wait to see what GTA 6 looks like, and where the heck it’ll be.. a MMO based on GTA’s universe would be nice, not this 16 Campy Kids crap we have now. This is a MATURE GAME, someone Stop buying Kids These Bloody games.. They have no Code of Honor or anything, nice to know that after my generation our nations will be screwed.

  • SO EXCITED

  • No ingame music without paying for the unlimited service?

  • I’m guessing most of things weren’t added doing the built time of PS4 so system update is needed to add them. :)

Overall PS4 is awesome and i can’t wait until i get my system this November 15.

  • I can’t wait to get my PS4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @131, Until YouTube Support, just Upload to facebook, then download it from facebook to a computer then upload it to YouTube until the update. It’s just a idea, I wanna do the same thing too, hopefully the update comes soon

  • Please tell me we if can play music we already have instead of paying for music unlimited to be able to play music in the background?

  • if* we

  • @ 137 – Beyond_Flight.

    Good question.

I think Sid or someone at Sony has to answer that.

I know on the PS3 it’s available, but only if the dev had it as a feature of the game…you could play your own music in game from the PS3 harddrive.

  • Cool update. Bad for people without internet. :S

  • NOv 15 cannot come soon enough!

  • why is there no suspend and resume mode that was a great feature the x1 has it,how long will we have to wait for it,when will ps3 headsets work on ps4 how many things have you pushed back now gaiaki(i know its not pushed back but they wont show it even works or what it is) ,headsets, games(not that we have many to begin with we only have one aaa killzone),os features suspend and resume,no western ps vita tv and why are people saying music can only be played in background with music unlimited the 360 can do that ffs,you would want to get a start on these features you said would be there

  • I’m so excited!! High hopes!!

  • 1) Where is the Google+ / YouTube support?!

    2) Are you serious… why is it necessary to go online to activate years old dvd and blu-ray support?!

    3) Resume / suspend functionality unavailable at launch is a major FAIL!

  • Well i found info here about the PlayStation app release http://kotaku.com/the-playstation-app-coming-november-13-to-enhance-your-1452149288 if anyone is interested

i find it odd that play station blog has not done a write up about this yet ?

  • Dear Sony,

Your customer support on the phone a moment ago, regarding the PS+ trial with my new PS3 GTA V Bundle not working, is garbage! They could not help me with my issue… You do not care about me as customer and I hate you and your products now. You no longer have my dedication or support. I am mad and irritated, that a simple problem of my code not working due to the fact that I’m already a Plus member, could not be fixed once they logged into my account and have seen the thousands of purchases I’ve made. I get it, apparently it’s a trial, but no where on the description does it state that it is solely for new customers. Part of the allure of the purchase was that I’d be getting an extra month of Plus.

Again, any manager at any store would have taken care of this issue in 5 seconds… It’s called customer service!

    -Unhappy Customer

  • That’s interesting that they only talk about Music Unlimited playing in the background of games. Maybe it’s just the update that allows this, and installed music can still be played the same way.

It would be nice to get a confirmation.

  • So not along we have delayed ps4 games until 2014 we actually have features promised at launch not even on the system itself and needs this patch to put them on there but not all features promised is in this update for ps4. The suspend mode not ready for launch but a future update which as we all know, could be delayed again. The new name delaystation 4 is a known reality now. I’m waiting for a ps4 and will stick with my ps3 for a while now. I’ll buy a straight talk iPhone 5 64 gig cell phone for 650 bucks instead of this ps4 next month. Thanks for making my decision for me Sony.

  • So is it possible to earn trophies while playing a game like Knack in co-op ( I’m in my own account on the PS4, while my brother is signed into his on the Vita?) through remote play on PS4?

  • @Haskell420…I CONCUR…
