Square Enix: A Year in Review

Unless you live in a dungeon, it’s probably been impossible to miss all the awesome Square Enix Japan titles we’ve enjoyed talking to you guys about here on PlayStation.Blog. As the new year is almost upon us, who’s up for a quick stroll down the 2013 memory lane?

Earlier this year, we brought you Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, which was in and of itself a walk down memory lane as you relived the story of Sora and his friends. Our launch event drew some incredibly passionate fans to Anaheim, California, to check out the new HD look, take pictures holding the official keyblade, and get the game in their hands for the first time.

We were thrilled to see some of you there, but if you couldn’t make it, you can still check out the video. For those experiencing the game for the first time, or those who have supported Kingdom Hearts ever since the original launch: we hope you enjoyed this compilation.

We also got to talk to you about some exciting new stuff coming out at the beginning of 2014, including Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Did you catch the news of the Collector’s Edition we announced right here on the blog? This is the grand finale of the Lightning saga, and we’re pulling out all the stops for it, so look for it to hit shelves on February 11th, 2014.

Lightning Returns, Gamescom, 04Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII on PS3

Do you think you can get through Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII in about a month? Good, because on March 18th, 2014, we’re bringing you another 200+ hours of Final Fantasy in the form of Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster. Get ready to set out on the summoner’s journey to defeat Sin, and then figure out how to deal with the world Sin leaves behind in the first sequel ever to grace the Final Fantasy mainstays. That reminds me, we broke the news about that Collector’s Edition on the blog, too… Tet oui lralg dryd uid?

What’s that? You want MORE amazing, JRPG goodness? Well, allow us to oblige. In 2014, we’ve got Drakengard 3 coming your way, a prequel to the entire series that’s as dark and twisted a fantasy as you’d expect from the creators of NIER. That includes Keiichi Okabe, the composer of that game’s beautiful and haunting soundtrack who returns for Drakengard 3. Prepare to wreak havoc, ride aboard your dragon, and hold onto your hats, because we’ve got some cool announcements coming soon.

Which leads us right into some stuff that’s further down the line, but trust us when we tell you: we can hardly contain ourselves. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, a compilation that includes Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts II, and cinematic cutscenes from Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded, will answer all the questions that left you scratching your head from Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX. That’s on its way. Excited yet? Did you watch the new trailer?

And you DID see everything we announced at E3, right? Were you crying? …Oh, that was just me? Well, that’s awkward. But come on — Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV are officially in development for PS4, and while we can’t say much more just yet, saying we’re excited is the last understatement I’ll make for 2013.

There you have it. 2014 and on are going to be amazing years from Square Enix, and we’re so glad we have you along for the ride. As the venerable Barret Wallace once said: there ain’t no getting off of this train we on!

Merry Christmas, everyone!

  • Can’t wait for KH and FF going forward

  • Merry Christmas

  • Let’s be real here, KH3 and FFXV aren’t coming out in 2014 in North America. Both probably won’t even hit Japan that year.

I do hope 2014 sees Square Enix realize that the PlayStation Vita exists. There’s a certain Type 0f Final Fantasy one would expect that’s been MIA for a while.

  • Merry Christmas!

  • Yes please only announce games with actual release dates. Just about ever game says it’s in development for PS4.

  • Merry Christmas All!

  • @3 please dont remind the fans of the patience given for that to be localized i gave up and naturally bought the japanese version

  • While I can care less about FF13 I can’t wait for the other games. Can you guys please for the love of God remake FF7, 8 & 9. Cronos Trigger and Cronos Cross should be remade also. I would love to see those games in HD with full trophy support. Hope you guys have a Merry Christmas and a safe New Years.

  • “Square Enix: A Year in Review”

Next year I want to see… “Square Enix: A YEAR WE LISTENED YOU”

    – PS VITA GAMES;
    – Kingdom Hearts FULL VERSIONS (not BBS and yes Final Mix) for Vita;
    – DIGITAL GAMES too. Stop this stupid “games only in disc”…. A lot of people prefers digital versions).

After this, I can say happy new year for you!

  • port KH Remix to Vita.
    port bravery default to vita
port final fantasy thearhtym to vita

and discount on classic FF titles on PSN XD

  • E lyh’d fyed vun Vehym Vyhdyco Q/Q-2 RT!

Yht oac bmayca kad Doba-0 dnyhcmydat yht bundat du Jedy!

  • Somebody call C3-P0 here, because Jabba the Hut wants to understand what a hell @djsaiyan spoke!

    =p

  • Final Fantasy XV better be the greatest game ever, unreal how long we have to wait for this and it’s probably not even coming out in 2014 since there’s been no info on it at all since e3

  • @12

It’s Al Bhed. Just google Al Bhed to English translator, no prissy protocol droid required. ;)

  • This is the year Square Enix went whole hog on mobile and nearly ignored PlayStation platforms completely. Dragon Quest on mobile, Final Fantasy on mobile. You released an HD remake and re-announced games you started the PlayStation 3 generation with on PlayStation 4. That’s it.

It’s sad that I’m not expecting much next year either.

  • final fantasy died for me when squaresoft merged with enix to become square enix… this sucks. FF was my fav eries, FF X was the last good game

  • I’m way excited for FFXV and KHIII. But also, I’m really excited for Drakengard 3. I rented the original Drakengard when it first came out and I loved it. So I’m really excited for D3! I hope you announced a collector’s edition for that too! Also FFX/X-2 is going to be great… again! Thanks SE!

  • Final Fantasy is my favourite series (along with Devil May Cry). I put all my faith into Square Enix to deliver with FF XV, KH 3 & hopefully Type-0!

  • I already have the LE pre ordered for LR and cant wait for it.I also picked up FF14 RRB for 10 bones and will play it once I can upgrade to ps4.All I want is a vita port of type-0.I played the japan psp demo and im said it never came over.

  • Announce that final fantasy type-0 is coming to the west and it would be the best new year’s gift

  • I love Square Enix. I can’t wait to get my hands on some new Final Fantasy’s next year. Lightning Returns, X-X2 HD, hopefully we will get some news on Final Fantasy XV. I’m looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 3. Ita gonna be a good year for Square :)

  • At this point you may as well upgrade Type 0 to an HD version and put it out on the Vita, ps3, and ps4. You guys do like money right? I did read somewhere that there would be an announcement regarding this game is some form. Fire your entire marketing department. :D

  • Thanks Square! I just wish you’d support current gen systems with your 2014 releases as well…

  • Barret Wallace also once said, “If you guys are going to continue to use us as dlc or reference us every time you want people to spend money then remake our game, give us more movies, and some sequels would be fine to. We are the best thing you do Square Enix…whoever that is! I am Barret and you better listen to me!!! Where you at Tifa?

  • You forgot to mention FFXIV ARR for PS4! Easily one of the games I’m looking forward to the most

  • I already imported Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD and Lightning Returns FFXIII from Japan. I will still get the US versions, but you expect me to wait 3 months for that?..tsk..no.

  • Playstation continues to be the best platform for Square Enix, bar none. The 3DS has some contenders (I’m excited to try Bravely Default!), but the PS3/PS4 and the Vita are really the definitive experience right now for many Square Enix titles.

I’d like to join the chorus of folks who:

    A) Wish our friends at Square Enix Japan a Merry Christmas!
    B) Would love to see Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 ported to Vita (or, as a consolation prize, Birth By Sleep available on PSN)
    C) Would buy Final Fantasy Type 0 the day it became available on Vita
    D) Would love to see Crisis Core and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth make their way over to the Vita

And hey, while we’re at it, a few other games we’d love to see ported to the PS3/PS4/Vita library include:
    -Dragon Quest 8
    -Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria
    -Grandia II and III
    -Nier
-The World Ends With You (to Vita/Playstation mobile)

These don’t even have to be HD remakes — Odin Sphere was released as a PS2 game on the PS3 and it looks amazing. But having these games available digitally would be excellent given their quality and difficulty to find in hard copy.

    Keep up the great game-making!

  • You know, when I saw “A Year in Review” , I expected them to talk about what they did in 2013. Granted, that really doesn’t amount to much.

So instead, we get “A Year in Preview” since none of this has happened yet. A couple of fixed dates for next year is more than what Square accomplished in 2013. Of course, the big titles with no dates yet won’t be until 2015 so when they “review 2014” it will be interesting to see what their releases were and how it jibes with this. My guess is they won’t have any releases past X/X-2 HD, Drakengard maybe as that series has a history of coming out unfinished anyway.

  • I hope see a Final Fantasy XII HD and Dragon Quest VIII HD too.

  • I’ll get my ps4 as soon as KH3 and FF XV get released, so looking forward to it :D

  • I really hope you guys show something new at E3 for KH 3.. I’m sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited for KH 2.5!! can’t wait! :D

  • Final Fantasy X/X-2 is mine for the Vita.

I’d like to have FFVII Crisis Core on the PSN and Kingdom Hearts BBS on the PSN too.

  • Considering Bravely Default is released less than a week before Lightning Returns there is kind of a crazy amount of Square Enix coming out early in 2014.

  • Please consider releasing Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD and lightning Returns for the PS4. :)

  • Super stoked for KH 2.5 HD. :D

  • Square Enix, ganbare!

  • Oh Kingdom Hearts…

    Kingdom Hearts 1
    Final Fantasy X
    (and The Last Of Us)

are the ONLY GAMES MADE ME CRY

  • As much as I am excited about FF15, I think I’m done with JRPGs as a whole. Maybe Bioware spoiled me with Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but nowadays I’m looking for deeper character-driven games instead of beautiful but utterly nonsensical ones. I was watching the latest Lightning Returns trailer today and the art design is gorgeous and it has production values coming out of the wazoo but there’s just no part of me that wants to play it. And trying to keep the story/timeline straight in that series gives me a headache. Don’t even get me started on KH.

  • ff type – 0 ! us version plz! vita plz. screw remakes want good new stuff plz not stuff iv already played before pppppllllzzzzz

  • Go away Square-Enix, you are killing yourself and customers interest with your sloooooooow translations, lack of being able to handle the HD generation and multiple systems to launch on. Your slow translations. the NA branch not being able to do anything in a timely fashion since it seems they are unaware of anything the Japan side does/plans.
Learn to translate a unfinished game while you’re doing it dam it!

  • Too many Nomura’s games coming. We, the true FF fans want more Toriyama’s games.

  • not really i love nomura’s art from FFV and above he brought that kind of spark we dont have now in these dark days of squenix

  • sorry disregard my last comment i was sidetracked by art :(

  • The one KH-related issue I’m most interested in is how you plan to tie up the story for PS-only gamers? After 2.5 HD comes out, we will have gotten every single KH game, or at least the cutscenes, on the PS3 with the exception of Dream Drop Distance. And according to the interview in the Jan. issue of GameInformer with Nomura, KH3 takes place directly after the events of Dream Drop Distance. Maybe you’re planning to make a crazy, cross-series combo pack with FF Type-0 and KH:3D for the Vita? I’d buy that. Then just make a FFXV and KH3 combo pack for PS4 and we’d be all set. Seriously, make it happen.

Alternately, I guess you could just include the cutscenes from 3D as a “story intro” in an Extras menu on the KH3 blu-ray? So those who are interested can watch it before playing the game?

  • No, all we need is FFX-3, FFXII-3, FFXIII-4, and FFXVI. all direct by Toriyama-san.

SE please make games for the fans, not for the ex-fans and people who keep bashing the series for the last 10 years, no matter what you do they’ll hate it anyway. So SE needs to focus on making games for their true fans and don’t listen to the haters.

  • @41 & @45

“True fans”? Say whatever you please, but please have the respect to speak for yourself alone

  • happy new year to you too.i’m excited for drakengard, ffx ps3/vita editions and even braverly default :0

  • Please bring Final Fantasy XIII Type-O to the US. Bring it on the PSP (PSN) and Vita.
Also bring Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core to the PSN PSP.

  • True fans are true fans. Those who keep bashing the game and say they’ll get the games when the price dropped to $10 are not so great fans. And why are these kind of fans always have the loudest opinions? SE needs to listen to the true fans, not those kind of unpleasable fans.

  • FFX wasn’t really one of my favorites, but Yuna was one of the best female character of all Final Fantasy.
Still not sure on which version to get (Vita or PS3) can’t it be a cross-buy?
